(00:00):
Hi, everybody, This is BobGail, co creator Back to the Future,
and you're listening to Brad Gilmore.Stop stop, Okay, it's great
Marten. You can't be such abat to the future. Oh. I
know you did send me back tothe future, but I'm back. I'm
back from the future. Right.Wait a minute, Wait, gosh,
(00:27):
are you telling me that you builtthe time machine the way I see it?
If you're gonna build a time machine, why not doing some style?
And we're so excited to have themjoining us on the show today. We're
talking about the brand new show Obliterated. It's going to be debuting tomorrow on
(00:49):
Netflix, and the creators of theshow are here with me, Josh,
John and Hayden. Guys, howy'all doing. We're great. Well,
hey, look, congratulations on thatyet another show. I know the people
really got to love this one, just from looking at some of the materials
and and what there's been online andthe synopsis sounds like a show that you's
ride up my alley. But Josh, why do you give people kind of
(01:10):
the elevator pitch if you will. What's the premise of the show Obliterated?
Premise of the pitch is basically you'relaunched right into the third act of what
would be the action movie about abomb that's going to annihilate Las Vegas,
and we meet the special forces teamthat's gone undercover at day clubs nightclubs in
Vegas to find, you know, the arms traffickers who are going to sell
(01:32):
this saying to the highest bidder. They crash through windows, they kill every
bad guy, they bring in theirbomb, the activator, and with second
left he actually clips the wires andsaves Vegas from obliteration. So, because
this is a clandestine operation and noone can know what this was, they
throw themselves the ultimate party in Vegas, you know, with camels and drugs
(01:53):
and booze and sex and people tellingeach other off. It's it's the office
Christmas party, you know, onsteroids and LC And at the height of
the debauchery, the phones ring andthey learned that the bomb they deactivated with
a decoy, the real one isgoing to go off in seven hours if
they don't release the bad guys.So they basically have the next seven hours
(02:16):
and the next seven episodes to findthis bomb deactivated or Vegas will be obliterated.
Unfortunately, now they're obliterated and allof their dysfunction you know, is
going to kind of, you know, chase them around the whole the whole.
Oh man, just sounds like ashow that's right up my alley,
Hayden, Like when when y'all,I guess the better question is and excuse
(02:37):
me, this is mundane, buthow does like a concept like this come
up? Was this inspired by anotherstory that y'all liked, or is this
something y'all would just spit balling toeach other? You know, when when
you finished making a movie, youknow, we tend to film on location,
so you know, you're with acrew and it's almost like a camp
for like a couple of months. And at the end of the you know,
(02:57):
the shoots, usually you throw abig wrap party and a lot of
the crew and cast are not goingto see each other again because you know,
you're only together for that one movie, and so that party, a
lot of things happen, and we'velearned, you know, from our experiences
from that that, like, youknow, people will tell each other off
for all of a sudden you'll learnthat people have been hooking up and all
(03:17):
these these things that have been percolatingthe entire shoot. Suddenly like all come
to you know, fruition at thisat this wild party, and you see
people drunk in ways that you haven'tseen before. And we just thought like,
oh, wouldn't it be funny iflike, oh my god, wait,
there was a problem with the filmstock and you know, we need
to do reshoots and we actually allhave to be together again, just when
(03:38):
you thought you'd never see these peopleagain. So it was taking that kind
of concept and putting it in anaction setting. We we love old school
action, you know, we fromyou know, working on Cobra Kai.
We we love movies of the eightiesand nineties, and we feel like,
you know, we wanted to bringback that old school action vibe. So
it's that genre with that concept inJohn. When you get this concept and
(04:00):
you think, okay, maybe wegot something here, what's what's the immediate
next step? So people mind notknow, do y'all go straight to Netflix
and say we got an idea.Do y'all go in a room and write
a few episodes and then pitch it, Like, what's the next step there?
I mean, we've put together apitch you know it is, you
know about a twenty to thirty minutepitch, and we did a sizzle reel
(04:21):
where we did like a fake trailerfor what this thing could be, and
then we went around town and wepitched it to all the different platforms,
and you know, the goal wasthis was always something that we thought would
be perfect on Netflix at the endof the day, you know, because
it's it's uncensored, it's unrated,it's you know, a throwback to the
kinds of movies that the guys andI made before we did Cobra Kai,
(04:43):
We did the Herold and Kumar movies, an American Pie Movie, Hot Tub
Time Machine, the movie Blockers, those big r rated comedies that people loved
in the movie theaters. We lovethe idea of, you know, bringing
that kind of energy kind of backin a big way and bringing it in
a streaming series like you've never seenat before. Now, Josh, one
of my favorite movies of all timeis actually it is my favorite movie of
(05:05):
all time is Back to the Future. When you look at how they write
the film, they use this BobGail describes this note card method where they
would kind of plot everything out onnote cards before putting it on the page.
When y'all are getting into a roomto write something, you know what
is, or create something or plotout the story. What is the method
do you use? Do you usea trodden true note card method? Do
(05:25):
you have something else that kind ofworks for y'all's triumphant? Well, I
could say, first of all,Back to the Future is probably our collective
favorite movie other than The Karate Kids, so we share that in common.
Yet John and I are sitting undera commissioned painting of Doc Brown from Back
to the Future too right now.But we actually do go old school during
(05:47):
during COVID, briefly we had tomove to a virtual writer's room and you
know, kind of have note cardsthat were on computer screens, which does
work. But we're very tactile, very analoged guys, and there's just a
tremendous benefit to putting things on thecards. If you saw the writer's room
we're in right now for the finalseason of Cobra Kai, you know,
(06:09):
the giant wall space is just coveredand probably you know, one hundreds,
if not a thousand note cards becausewe get really specific, you know,
by the season, we get reallyspecific by the character, We get really
specific by the episode by the act, by the moment, and it's it's
enormously helpful to have something in yourhand that you can move around, and
(06:30):
it's a nice puzzle. We'll puttogether Josh John and Hater joining us right
now we're talking about Obliterate. It'sgoing to be on Netflix starting tomorrow.
That's November thirtieth, depending on whenyou're hearing this now, Hayden, you
mentioned Cobra Kai, which everybody loves. I can't wait to see the next
season of it, obviously, Butwhen I watch it, not only am
I big Back to the Future fan, I'm a hilacious pro wrestling fan,
(06:51):
and I see a lot of prowrestling in the storytelling, And I say
it in this way, there's Babyface, the guy who's good, and then
he turns, and then he comesback, and there's all these kinds of
twist and turns. Did pro wrestling, especially eighties pro wrestling, have any
inspiration on how y'all tell these CobraKa stories? Or is that just me
worsing? It's funny, you know, it wasn't a conscious effort to do
(07:13):
that. But we grew up inthat height of that era as w w
F days and beyond and I thinkthat you know, you know, when
we write for Cobra Kairi, wewrite for the kid in us, and
I think that, like we rememberthose types of twists and turns, and
you know, we always joked thatlike this the genre, Like you know,
(07:35):
when we took Karate Kid and turnedit into a series, we kind
of made it a soap opera, like it's its own karate drama that we
did, And in a lot ofways, wrestling has its own soap opera
story that you're following. And soI think that there's just an overlap when
you're following characters that are quote unquotebad or the heel like that you want
(07:56):
to see, like, you know, they can't just be the same all
the time. You love them becausethey're bad, but you like to see
twist and turns, and I thinkthat there is an overlap, So you're
not crazy. Okay. Now,now, speaking of Cobra Kai John,
there was the video that came out. I'm sure people have already asked you
about this last week with Macho andJackie Chan talking about a new Karate Kid
(08:16):
movie. I don't know if youcan say any of this or if you
all have any connection. I'm notexactly sure, but is that going to
be an offshoot of Cobra Kai.Is there going to be involvement from you
all, or is this something completelyseparate. It's something that's completely separate.
You know, we are in theloop. You know, Ralph sar guy,
so you know, we're big supportersof him and always rooting for him.
(08:37):
So you know, as scripts havecome in on that, on that
movie, you know, we've takena look at those things, given our
thoughts here and there. You know, we talked to the director a little
bit and he's a great guy. He's a big Karate Kid fan and Cobra
Kai fan. But when it comesdown to the creative on that, we
really have no connection to it.It's really outside of the Cobra Kai story.
(08:58):
You know, Daniel Daniel Russo isthere. I'm not going to spoil
you know, the ways that he'sinvolved, but it really has no bearing
on what's going on in the comverTise series now Obliterated. It will debut
tomorrow on Netflix. We're all excitedto see it. Now, Josh,
just to go back to one morething about back to the Future. I
know that y'all big back to theFuture guys. I remember y'all were throwing
on an idea of even doing aBack to the Future style series. I
(09:20):
asked Bob Gail about it myself ifthat was something he would give his blessing
to, but you know he's veryprotective with the franchise. Was that a
real idea that y'all have or sketchedout in your office somewhere of an idea
of a Back to the Future series, I'll say on equivocally, yes,
we have. We have what wethink is just a fan favorite idea that
(09:41):
we've never seen circulated out there thatwe, you know, based on our
instincts and our love of that franchiseand the fandom, I think would really
thing. We know that Bob andother Bob as the Magis have said for
years they have no interest in retouchingthis. You know, I'm actually friendly
with Michael Klaster and who worked onthe original and you know, wrote some
books about it as well, whosaid the same thing. Uh, you
(10:03):
know, no pressure from us.But if that door ever opened even a
crack, so people were curious, they know where to find us. Well,
I'm definitely curious and Michael's a greatguy. Well, guys, I
really appreciate you all joining us onthe show today again. Obliterated is tomorrow.
Josh, Hayden and John really appreciateyour time. Gentlemen, Thank you,
thank you so much.
