Speaker 1 (00:30):
Thank you.
Hey, it's Dr Kate Walker and Iam actually on grandma duty
today and so you can see in mybackground there's a stroller.
So I am in Conroe, texas.
So for all of my Conroe people, houston area folks, I'm in your
neck of the woods this week butI'm not getting in your traffic
.
I'm going to stay in the Conroearea and play with my grandbaby
(00:54):
and my daughter and her lovelyhusband.
But we do need to talk about thetopic today because it's pretty
important.
We've seen some major shifts.
Today is May 27, 2025.
And so there are some marketingchanges and I don't want to go
(01:16):
too far down the rabbit holetoday because, yeah, the title
of this is like start yourpractice in one day, and I want
to stick to that.
But I am going to give you somecontext about why we're we're
talking this way, because I'mnot the only one.
I stay in some circles withlots of therapists who who focus
(01:39):
on marketing.
They make their living withtherapy and marketing and, plus,
I have a circle of folks whoaren't therapists.
They are just keeping theirfinger on the pulse of what
works with marketing.
And the biggest shift, in caseyou couldn't guess actually two
shifts.
I've talked about this before.
One is AI and the way that itnow affects Google searches and,
(02:05):
of course, the advent of bigcompanies big corporations,
national corporations coming inand offering therapy nationwide,
and it does a couple of things.
Yeah, it messes with the searchengines, but it also kind of
messes with your head a littlebit, because I think a lot of us
(02:26):
feel like, oh, it's too muchcompetition, there's just
nothing I can do about this, andyou know what's the point of
even trying, and I really hopethat what I talk about today is
a springboard.
This is the end of May, so nextweek I've got a four-day smart
practice sprint.
(02:46):
These are little 30-minutesnippets where I take you
through more specifics withhandouts, like you're going to
leave with things you candownload that will help you with
your marketing and willidentify mistakes you're making,
et cetera, et cetera.
And then Step it Up, members.
Just for you guys, we arehaving two-hour intensive
(03:08):
seminars this summer.
So a two-hour seminar you knowI'm offering CEs on marketing a
two-hour seminar on HIPAAcompliance, a two-hour seminar
on gosh it's slipping my mindright now, but it will come back
to me but these, oh, I know howto be a CE provider, but not
(03:30):
just how to be a CE provider, how to find a platform to host
the things, sell the things andprovide the good customer
service.
So Step it Up, members.
That's all for you.
It's included in yourmembership.
Everybody else has to pay, soit is open to the public, but
(03:51):
they're going to have to pay.
Step it up members, not you.
So I want you to really usethis summer 2025 to get your
practices in a space whereyou're just not freaking out and
stressing out about it.
So you got to start somewhereand that's what today is all
about.
If you are listening to me forthe first time, you're a brand
new member, you're a brand newlistener and you are a grad
(04:13):
student or you're somebody whohas never been in private
practice, thinking about doingprivate practice, and you're
like, okay, I don't know what todo.
First, because you know, when Isay one day to starting your
private practice, I'm not being, you know, exaggerating.
That's not good grammar, butyou guys get what I mean.
(04:33):
We are in a business withextremely low overhead and we're
able to reach people fairlyeasily.
So that's where I'm leaningtoday.
I want you to understand how tostart and do your practice.
But my other agenda is to helpyou stop doing things that are
(04:58):
wasting your time because theyare based on outmoded, outdated.
When I say outdated, I meanlike six months ago.
I'm not talking 10 years ago.
I'm not talking about those ofyou who are still putting flyers
on cars and paying a hundredbucks to get your name on a
t-shirt that's gonna get shotout of a t-shirt cannon at a
football game I'm talking about.
(05:20):
This is new stuff.
And if you are stillover-focusing, over focusing on
any social media at all, oryou're spending lots and lots of
money for SEO, optimization orGod forbid Google ads sorry,
google, I feel like I got to becareful with the Google but if
(05:41):
you're spending money and timein places in your business that
just won't impact your bottomline, I mean that's time, that's
money that leads to burnout.
I mean I know, for mepersonally, you know, when I
find out, I used to say everymistake is expensive and time
consuming, and I still say it.
(06:02):
I don't, it's no use to aboutit and I have made some very
expensive mistakes when it comesto SEO and blogging and Google
ads and all of those things.
And so it's okay If you'redoing the things that are
wasting time and money.
Please understand, this isnever, ever going to be a shame
(06:24):
conversation.
We have all been there and youneed to know what you can do
today to either get yourpractice off the ground or just
get it into shape.
All right, I know.
So here's number one.
Actually, I was goingno-transcript, I was going to
start somewhere else, but thiscame to my mind and so I'm going
to do it right now.
(06:46):
I see so many people on socialmedia worried about do I form an
LLC?
Do I form an LLC?
Folks, in Texas, you can open alemonade stand without an LLC.
Okay.
Limited liability corporationis just that.
(07:07):
It's designed to help you limitliability.
Now the question is to what?
What are you trying to keepsafe?
Well, obviously, that would beyour assets, right.
Your home, your auto, thingsthat you own, if you have an
inheritance or land or thingslike that.
So, yes, if you are going tolimit the liability from your
(07:30):
company to the things that youown, well, that's a good thing,
right.
But your malpractice insurancedoes that as well, right.
And LLC, more specifically andeven more efficiently, is
designed to protect yourbusinesses from each other.
So, if you are just stayingawake at night because you're
(07:53):
not sure what to do and how toget that, how to organize what
to do and how to get that.
Whether to how to organize Atthe beginning, you're going to
be taking in a very little money, right?
And so at that point theliability is probably the
primary issue, not the taxbenefit, right?
You really don't see a taxbenefit until you do an S-Corp.
(08:14):
So when you're thinking aboutorganization and I just can't do
this until I get the rightorganization, dba, just a doing
business as Go down to yourcounty courthouse, your county
clerk, get a piece of paper, pay$10, get your name and go to
your bank, open a bank account.
(08:36):
One day, that's all you need todo.
A DBA and a bank account.
All right, you can do that inone day.
Then, down the road, when youtalk to your partner, talk to
your accountant, think of thetax benefits, the advantages.
Then you can start diggingdeeper into organization.
(08:57):
But if you're really worriedabout liability, call your
liability insurance, work withthem, right?
Because I'm not going to tellyou to get liability insurance
on day one.
You should have gottenliability insurance, malpractice
insurance, back when you were agrad student.
So, yeah, if you haven't donethat yet, absolutely so.
(09:18):
Day one get your malpracticeinsurance and your DBA.
All right, we good.
Next thing get your domain.
Go, get your domain, get yourdomain name.
That's your electronic versionof your DBA, your DBA, your DBA,
your bank account.
All right, easy.
(09:40):
Now website.
Let's talk about that a second, because a lot of folks think,
well, I'll just I'll be onpsychology today, I don't need a
website.
Wrong Over reliance onpsychology today.
(10:02):
That's, that's a mistake.
Right, definitely do that, butmake that day two or day 10 or
day 50.
You need a website and I'mgoing to.
This is where I knoweverybody's like duh, okay, well
, of course we.
You know this isn't thenineties.
Yes, we know everybody needs awebsite, but if you're just
going to do day one, I see somany people going down the
rabbit hole of content.
If you listen to me, you knowthat I talk about content.
(10:23):
You know copy, copy, copy.
We've got to have everythingoptimized for the search engines
.
Not on day one, you don't Onday one.
You need simply a one page, abrochure.
You need your and a phonenumber.
People need to be able tocontact you and I'll tell you
why in just a minute.
(10:43):
They need to be able to put aface and a name together because
there's an emotional connectionthere and there needs to be a
contact way to contact you abovethe fold.
So that's an old print term, right?
If I opened a brochure, we'dsay above the fold.
Right, that's, when I open thebrochure, I see it the first
thing.
I don't have to unwind thebrochure to see more information
(11:04):
.
So, with your website, think interms of your phone as well,
right, because everything ifit's not optimized for the phone
, forget about it.
Right, very few people aregoing to be looking you up on
their laptop, so on the phonethey have to be able to have
that contact information in thatfirst glance.
We call that above the fold, all right.
(11:26):
So if you're freaking outbecause of a website and colors
and designs and fonts and copyand you're booked out, you know,
do you want?
You're not going to do awebsite until you get, you know,
the perfect headshot.
Take a picture with your phone.
You've got a domain name, putit on a website.
Make sure you have contactinformation, make sure it works.
(11:48):
Whatever you choose, you knowI'm a big fan of the phone and
really that's.
That's your day one.
Start your practice.
Yes, you're going to need acamera, unless you have an
office, which I was going totalk about.
That but I thought, no, no,this is about starting your
practice in one day.
So if you're going to look foran office, that's going to be a
(12:12):
couple of weeks because you gotto do some shopping.
If you're going to start yourpractice in one day, a camera
and HIPAA compliant software todo meetings, and guess what?
Zoom offers HIPAA compliantadd-on, they'll sign a business
agreement with you and it's free.
So, yes, zoom, hipaa compliantZoom, and it may not be free
(12:36):
anymore.
So check me on that.
It's super cheap, all right.
So are you with me?
Here we are.
You got your DBA, you got yourbank account, you got your
domain name, you got your onepage website with the way to
contact you above the fold, andthen you have a way for it to
(12:56):
actually deliver services in aHIPAA compliant fashion.
All right.
Now that you're going to seepeople, you need a HIPAA
compliant record storage.
Again, I see people spending somuch money on robust software,
electronic health record systems, when, if you're just starting
(13:16):
out, you really just need aHIPAA compliant folder.
Right?
Because when we say folder.
We're really talking filecabinet, right?
So when you have your HIPAAcompliant folder or file cabinet
think Google Workspaces GoogleWorkspaces, for about $12 a
(13:37):
month or less, will sign a BAAwith you.
They're HIPAA compliant and fora small practice that's
starting in one day that cantake care of all of your
electronic health records, yourPHI that can take care of all of
your electronic health records, your PHI for the clients that
you will have All right.
(14:01):
Now, here's where I'm going withthis.
We are moving away from the oldsystem, which is attraction
marketing.
All right, and I know this iskind of tacky, but I'm going to
refer to it like fishing Becauseit is.
I mean, it's a good metaphor.
So you think about in terms ofwe talked about attraction
marketing in terms of a lureright.
(14:23):
You think of one of those luresthat's super shiny and the fish
sees it from way far away andit's attracted to the lure right
.
Or if it's at night and youshine a light in the water so
that the fish would come to thelight.
Well, now, because of all of thesearch engine optimization kind
(14:43):
of a mess that it's in rightnow and I will talk about this
more in the Smart PracticeSprint.
I will talk about it a lot morein the webinar that's happening
in June the two-hour webinar, because SEO isn't doing what it
used to do for us.
We have to have a way to keeppeople in our circle longer.
(15:06):
So I'm almost thinking, like interms of the lobster fishermen
right, if you ever seen alobster trap.
Right, it gets the animal intothe box and it stays there.
That's where I really don't likethe metaphor anymore, because I
don't like to think we'retrapping people.
We're not trapping people, butyou are creating a system so
(15:29):
that people are able to haveaccess to you multiple times.
All right, so old still works, but it's really changed.
That's the attraction, right?
The lure New is we are going toget them into your circle and
(15:50):
we are going to help them stayin your circle through things
like resources on your website, email newsletters I know nobody
wants to hear that, I know youdon't and ways to contact you
that work to get them into yourcircle and stay in your circle.
(16:10):
And that's really hitting someof y'all's sweet spots.
I know, if you're listening tome, a lot of you like to do
retreats, you like to do publicspeaking, you like to get out
into the community.
Introverts, don't turn away.
I want you to listen too.
There's a space here for you aswell.
It's just changing, but I don'twant to go down that rabbit
(16:31):
hole today.
You guys have a lot of stuffcoming up this summer and we are
going to really focus on thisthe alternative to SEO, the
alternative to search engineoptimization, or probably, if I
a better way of putting it, is away to complement what you're
already doing with SEO.
(16:52):
Alright, right, so I'm going torecap.
So today was starting yourpractice in one day.
Really, what this is about isnot going down those rabbit
holes that we all tend to godown, which is just keeping you
up at night as far as how tostructure and what to say and
the perfect headshot and all ofthose things.
So, number one DBA.
(17:15):
You can start your businesswith the DBA County Courthouse
10 bucks lasts for 10 years.
Use it to get your businessbank account.
Don't worry about the perfectheadshot.
Just get something to go on aone-page website with a good
enough headshot and contactinformation above the fold.
(17:38):
Get your camera, get your Zoomthat is HIPAA compliant.
Get your $12 a month GoogleWorkspaces how do you know
something's HIPAA compliant, they will sign a BAA with you, a
literal business associateagreement that you can download.
You can put in a file, electronic or otherwise that
(18:00):
shows that they will shareliability with you.
Am I going to talk about thismore this summer?
Absolutely, I am Step it Up,members.
We're going to have a two-hourHIPAA self-audit intensive in
August.
All right, we are going todouble down on how to make sure
our practices are going strong, going into the fall.
(18:23):
All right, I am going to openit up for questions and I will
hit pause to do that.
