How does one transform profound loss into a journey of self-discovery? Inspired by the courage of my late grandpa and a poignant quote from "Eat Pray Love," I embarked on a solo travel adventure that took me across Hawaii, LA, and beyond. From the initial hesitant steps in Maui to a fearless seven-week backpacking expedition through 14 cities in three countries, these experiences not only ignited my passion for travel but also illuminated the joy and freedom of living life on my own terms. Along this journey, I found solace in the kindness of strangers and the unexpected appearance of ladybugs, which affirmed I was on the right path.

Reflecting on these transformative travels, I delve into the profound lessons learned and the beauty encountered at every turn. With each new city and encounter, I was reminded of the importance of seizing the moment and prioritizing personal happiness. As I recount these adventures, I encourage you to overcome fear and hesitation, to take that leap, and embrace your own path to joy and fulfillment. Join me next Wednesday for the season finale as we continue to foster a community of beautiful souls, ready to uplift and inspire each other. Harkaren (00:03):
Hello everyone and welcome to Balance Baby, the
podcast designed to help youconsistently show up as the best
version of yourself.
My name is Harkaren and I'll beyour host.
I'll be here every week sharingstories and teaching you
techniques to prioritize theonly thing we have any control

(00:25):
over in this world ourselves.
If you're brave enough to leavebehind everything familiar and
comforting and set out on atruth-seeking journey, either
internally or externally, and ifyou're willing to regard
everything that happens to youon that journey as a clue, and

(00:49):
if you accept everyone you meetalong the way as a teacher, and
if you're prepared, most of all,to face and forgive some of the
most difficult realities aboutyourself most difficult
realities about yourself thenthe truth will not be withheld
from you.
I love this quote from Eat PrayLove.

(01:16):
It resonates deeply with mebecause it captures the essence
of what solo traveling has meantin my life.
It's about stepping into theunknown, leaving behind comfort
zones and embracing the journeyof self-discovery and healing.
For most of my life, I believedthat solo adventures were out of
my reach.
I was with the same partner forall of my 20s and I had decided

(01:41):
to marry him, so I thought Ihad closed the door on
experiencing things like livingalone or traveling by myself.
I'm not the type to regretthings, but I had always admired
women who lived alone ortraveled alone, and thought that
was no longer an option for me.
However, life works inmysterious ways.

(02:04):
My divorce offered me theopportunity to discover these
parts of myself, a silver lining.
In previous episodes, I'vediscussed how living alone was
essential for my soul'sevolution, and I feel the same
way about solo traveling.
And I feel the same way aboutsolo traveling.

(02:25):
I didn't travel at all when Iwas younger.
My first time on a plane waswhen I was 14, on the way to the
UK to visit my dad's family, and that was the only
international flight I ever tookwith my parents.
For most of my teens and early20s, I would get homesick even

(02:46):
if I was within a few hours ofmy house.
It wasn't until 2014, when Iwent to Maui for the first time,
that I truly got to experienceand understand the joy of
traveling, and I've been hookedever since.
Since then, I've been to Hawaiia few times, miami, new York,

(03:09):
la, japan, singapore, bali, italy, maldives, thailand,
malaysia and Australia.
I honestly might have missed afew, but you get the point, my
love for travel becameinsatiable.
Last year I was chatting with mygood friend and I was saying

(03:32):
how 2023 was going to be atransformative year for me, no
matter what I had no say in it.
I lost my grandpa, and then, three months later, I lost my
dad, but I was determined to endmy year on a positive note and
I did exactly that when I lostmy grandpa.

(03:59):
It made me reflect on hisjourney to Canada.
What a step outside of hiscomfort zone it must have been
to uproot his life and move to aforeign country where he didn't
know anyone and didn't know thelanguage.
Keep in mind, this was allbefore the internet.
There was no way of knowingwhat to expect other than
hearing it from other people orexperiencing it for yourself.

(04:22):
I knew he hadn't taken such abold step, only for me to feel
unfulfilled in my life.
As I processed his passing, Irealized that my grandpa's
courage had set a powerfulexample for me.
Inspired by his journey, Idecided it was time to step

(04:46):
further outside of my comfortzone and started playing with
the idea of leaving Canada foran extended period of time.
Whenever I would considertaking this hypothetical trip, I
would light up inside.
I could feel all the energyswirling within me and it felt
like I was glowing from theinside out.

(05:08):
Just the thought of this tripwas activating the joy within me
and I intuitively knew I neededto make it happen.
As exciting as the idea was, Icouldn't commit to a place or a
timeline.
Something was causing me tohesitate.
But a few weeks later, when Ilost my dad, I realized that

(05:34):
there was no time to wait.
Tomorrow is not promised and weneed to experience all that we
can while we're able to.
To experience all that we canwhile we're able to.
My dad's death reminded me thatour time on this earth is
limited and we should spend asmuch of it as possible pursuing
the things that light us upinside.

(05:56):
So I started planning andembracing this new chapter of my
life.
My main criteria was that Iwanted to feel safe alone, I
wanted to extend my summer and Iwanted to jam-pack as many new
experiences as possible.
I built an itinerary consistingof 14 cities in 3 countries,

(06:22):
traveling for a total of sevenweeks.
I wanted to challenge myself,so I decided I was only going to
take a backpack and I decidedthat I was going to try to stay
in hostels for the first timeever.
Since I was already going to bestepping outside of my comfort
zone, I thought I should diveright in rather than just

(06:47):
dipping my toes.
I spent a total of four weeksalone and three weeks with one
of my friends.
The trip itself turned out tobe a thousand times better than
I could have ever expected.
Instead of eat, pray, love, mytrip turned out to be more eat,

(07:07):
party, meditate.
Think about the person you arewhen you're on vacation Relaxed,
laid back, joyful, confident.
Now imagine what life would belike if you felt like that all
the time.
This is the goal.

(07:28):
This is what I'm workingtowards.
I embrace my aloneness ascomplete freedom For many of us.
There are very few periods inour life where we are truly
alone and can prioritizeourselves.
If you're in a relationship, that will take some priority.

(07:51):
If you're married, that willtake more, and if you have kids,
that will take even more.
Solo travel isn't just aboutseeing new places.
It's a journey inwards.
It's about connecting deeplywith yourself, understanding

(08:12):
your desires, with yourself.
Understanding your desires andfacing your fears.
The benefits extend beyond thetravel itself, impacting your
overall well-being and personaldevelopment.
This journey was more than justa series of destinations.
It was an exploration of my ownresilience.

(08:34):
It was an exploration of my ownresilience, my self-reliance
and my capacity for joy.
Before leaving, I had peopleasking me if I was scared or
nervous to go alone, but Itrusted myself and I trusted the

(08:54):
divine timing of all that wasunfolding for me.
Staying and missing out on thisopportunity scared me way more
than going.
When you're in a foreign countrywithout the safety net of
friends and family, you learn torely on your own instincts and
resourcefulness.
Traveling solo forces you toembrace the unknown with an open

(09:17):
heart.
It taught me the power oftrusting myself and my intuition
and the importance of seekingout experiences that nourish my
soul.
As I overcame each newchallenge, I boosted my
self-confidence and reinforcedmy belief in my own capabilities

(09:40):
.
Without the influences ofothers, we can tune into our own
desires and preferences andconnect deeply with our inner
selves deeply with our innerselves.
It's a chance to step back fromthe roles and expectations that
define us in our everyday livesand to rediscover who we are at

(10:04):
our core.
You get to experience versionsof yourself that you may have
never met before.
You learn to release baggagethat was never meant to be yours
to carry in the first place.
I had never planned a trip thislong before, so I had to spend
time figuring out the logisticsof where to stay, which

(10:28):
transportation to take and whatthings needed to be pre-booked
and what things needed to bepre-booked.
I had mapped out an itineraryof where I was going to go, but
I left it completely openregarding what I was going to do
when I got to each destination.
I would decide what to doeither when I got there or a few

(10:49):
days before arriving in eachnew city.
I wanted to feel a sense ofease and flow.
There was nothing I was deadset on seeing or doing.
I was just open to whateverexperiences presented themselves
to me, and I was so thankful.

(11:10):
I took this approach because itallowed for beautiful
synchronicities and unexpectedadventures that I could never
have planned and, truthfully, strangely, even when I was
physically alone, I never trulyfelt alone.
Throughout my trip, there werecountless moments where I could

(11:35):
sense my dad and grandpawatching over me.
I remember strolling throughthe streets of Portugal and
thinking we get to experiencethis together.
In reality, the possibility ofwalking through Portugal with my
dad and grandpa had neverexisted, but in this way I felt

(11:59):
they were there with me, seeingthe world through my eyes.
They were living vicariouslythrough me, sharing in the
adventures and the beauty ofeach place I visited, the things
they never got to experience Iwas now experiencing for us all.
And, of course, the universesent me signs to confirm that I

(12:26):
was in fact walking a path ofalignment with my higher self.
Not only had I felt myintuition when I initially had
the idea of taking the trip Tellme how I planned this trip from
scratch, adjusted it as neededand somehow, in every single

(12:48):
city I visited, I encountered aladybug, whether it was
souvenirs, a commercial, awindow display or a real live
ladybug.
What are the chances of that?
As you know from my previousepisodes, ladybugs are my symbol

(13:10):
of alignment, a sign from theuniverse that I am on the right
path.
Seeing them in such diverse andunexpected places reinforces
that I was exactly where Ineeded to be.
So what are some of thehighlights from this epic trip?
Seeing pods of wild dolphins onmy way to snorkel in a volcanic

(13:36):
crater in São Miguel, which ispart of the Azores Islands, off
the coast of Portugal.
Living out a vision I had bybiking the coast in Kashkai and
having a huge beach all tomyself and having a huge beach
all to myself, literallyeverything about Madeira, from

(14:04):
the black sand beach to thePorto Maniz natural pools, to
completing the most difficultpeak-to-peak hike on the island.
Or when my friend joined me andwe had our first wild night out
in Albufeira, a beach townwhich is part of the Algarve
region in southern Portugal.
Or when we stumbled across abrand new bar that had only been

(14:28):
open for one hour on our way toa flamenco show in Seville.
Or segwaying our way throughGranada, being in awe of the
beauty of Mallorca and theperfectly powdery sandy beaches
dancing under rainbow archwaysin Valencia, taking in the

(14:54):
architectural brilliance ofAntony Gaudi in Barcelona,
seeing the planets and starsfrom one of the top three
stargazing destinations in theworld.
And my confidence-boostingnudist experience in Tenerife.
And every moment of my time inAmsterdam, which I shared with a

(15:19):
special guest.
I cannot stress enough howimportant it is to solo travel,
but if you are truly scared orunsure, just take somebody with
you.
Just travel.
The experiences you gain fromexploring the world are

(15:40):
invaluable and transformative.
Instead of spending money onmore clothes or eating out,
invest in experiences thatexpand your horizons and enrich
your soul.
Traveling allows you to immerseyourself in different cultures
and traditions.
It broadens your perspective, showing you the beautiful

(16:05):
diversity of the world we livein.
Every place you visit has itsown unique way of life, its own
stories and customs, and eachone has something to teach you.
When you travel, especially toplaces that are different from
what you know, you gain a deeperunderstanding of humanity.

(16:28):
You connect with people who maylive very different lives from
you, yet you find common groundin shared smiles, stories and
kindness.
These connections remind you ofthe universal bonds we all
share, no matter where we comefrom.

(16:49):
Stepping out of your comfortzone and into the unknown,
whether alone or with company, challenges you in ways that
staying home simply can't.
It pushes you to be resourceful, adaptable and open-minded.

(17:12):
Each journey is an opportunityfor personal growth, for
discovering new versions ofyourself and for creating
memories that last a lifetime.
When you subject yourself todifferent cultures and
traditions, you develop empathyand a broader worldview.
You learn to appreciate thebeauty in diversity and

(17:35):
understand the common threadsthat weave through all of human
experiences.
Traveling, especially solo, also brings a profound sense of
freedom and self-reliance.
You navigate new environments, make decisions on the fly and

(17:56):
trust your instincts.
This builds a deeper sense ofconfidence and resilience that
impacts all of your life.
Thank you so much for tuning into my 11th episode of season
two.
Solo travel isn't just aboutvisiting new places.

(18:20):
It's also about discovering newparts of yourself.
It's about finding courage inthe face of the unknown and
embracing the adventures thatlife presents.
Reflecting on my journey, Irealized that it was as much
about internal exploration as itwas about external adventures.

(18:44):
The loss of my grandpa and dadwere catalysts pushing me to
re-evaluate my life and to seekdeeper meaning and fulfillment
In honoring their legacies.
I stepped out of my comfortzone and embarked on a journey
that transformed me in ways Icould have never anticipated,

(19:15):
anticipated.
Every city I visited, every newface I encountered, every
unexpected twist and turn alongthe way was a lesson and a gift.
It showed me the beauty of theworld and the kindness of
strangers.
It reinforced the importance ofliving fully and authentically,
pursuing what lights you upfrom inside.

(19:37):
Seeing ladybugs in every citywas a powerful reminder that I
was exactly where I needed to be.
They were a confirmation fromthe universe that I was aligned
with my higher self, following apath that was meant for me.
Don't let fear or hesitationhold you back from experiencing
it.
