Journaling Recommendation

1. List the top 10 things you love and adore your parents for? What does it feel like to think about each of those things?

2. Now the toughie: What are the 3-4 things for which you have the strongest negative feelings toward your parents (or the one parent you venerate most)? Describe those things, events, or memories in complete detail.

3. And slightly tougher: Let it all flow; describe in the strongest language the truest, realest, and most powerful feelings you have toward your parents for each of the memories in #2. If you were to be completely honest, what is it you really feel?

4. If you have no strong negative feelings toward a parent(s), is it possible you're lying to yourself? Is it possible you're denying the truth? Is it possible your instinct to protect your parent, or the memory of your parent (and the guilt of betrayal from doing the opposite), is so great that you'd rather deny and avoid than face it?

5. What are you honestly feeling, right this moment? What does that particular feeling tell us about the weight of this particular conversation to you?

Song Recommendation

I remember this song so vividly from my childhood. I remember it striking me, even as a kid, as perhaps the single most depressing song ever, with such an incredibly powerful message. Yes, it's a song about regrets. But it is so fitting for this discussion of even great parents well-meaning parents - making colossal mistakes and the reality that bad habits get transferred, quite unthinkingly from one generation to the next. Daughters raise their daughters often in the same mistaken system of beliefs and actions in which they themselves were raised, despite their efforts to do just the opposite of how they were raised; same with sons and their sons. Download the song and give a good long meditation on its words and meaning. Cat's in the Cradle, by Harry Chapin.
