Rev. Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III serves as the senior pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. Yet, much like theologian John Wesley's view that "the world is my parish," Haynes' ministry reaches far beyond the walls of his church in the South. He is widely regarded as a prophetic pastor and a passionate social gospel advocate.
In this interview with Bankole Thompson, Haynes reflects on the historical role of the Black Church and its pressing responsibility to act decisively in the face of the challenges expected to arise with the reelection of former Republican President Donald Trump in January. He emphasizes the Black Church's duty to its community and the need to urgently address a host of issues that will affect Black America starting in 2025.
The outspoken pastor also examines the dynamics of the 2024 presidential election, including differences in voting patterns between Black and White women and other factors that shaped the election's outcome.
