The recent tragic deaths of two young children, ages 9 and 2, who were reportedly found frozen inside a van lastweek in a Detroit casino parking garage, continued to weigh heavily on the conscience of city leaders.
In this episode, journalist Bankole Thompson speaks withDr. Chad Audi, the President and CEO of the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, is providing a new home this week for Tateona Williams, the 29-year-old mother of the deceased children. Audi wants Williams and her surviving childrento finally have a place they can call home. However, Audi argues that the crisis facing Williams and her children is systemic, and urgent action is needed to revamp the Coordinated Assessment Model (CAM), the referral systemfor those experiencing homelessness that is intended to facilitate assistance. Since Williams reportedly contacted CAM numerous times in the past but received no help, Audi insists that it is time to not only tackle the severe issue of income inequality, with more than 43% of children living in live in poverty but also place the searchlight on the system that doesn’t seem to be working for many who need shelter in the city.
