(00:00):
Welcome to Banta with Tony. Join me as I share stories about
motherhood, faith, life, love, and everything else in between.
I promise we'll also have some fun along the way, and I hope
that the time we spend together will end up being some of the
highlights of your week. Thank you for coming along well.
(00:20):
Hello. Hello my humble listener.
I hope everybody is having a great week and I hope that we
are ready to welcome the weekend'cause I sure AM.
And as I'm recording this episode, I am like in the
beginning of the week. So I am looking forward to this
episode coming out on Friday andfor it to signify the start of
my enjoyments because I must enjoy it.
(00:42):
Why do we work? We work so we can take care of
our loved ones. We work so we can provide for
our family. But most importantly, we work so
we can live. So if we are doing all this
stuff and we look around and like I'm not living, OK, we need
to rearrange some things becauseI must enjoy it.
And if you're not enjoying, please make sure you enjoy it
because it's life. So many things will come your
(01:03):
way that will try to steal your joy, that will try to make sure
you don't enjoy it. But you only have one life to
live. Don't be going out here making
stupid decisions now come on, we're too grown for that.
But we must enjoy it. When you see me and you see me
dancing at the party and you don't know mind your business.
I need you to heavily mind your business.
So I hope everybody is going to have a great start to their
(01:24):
weekend. We are just going to jump right
into it today. You guys always know I bring you
guys with the pop culture 1st and then we take it from there.
So a lot has been popping, a lothas been popping.
So first story, Super Bowl, halftime show.
I know I'm going to be behind once this comes out, but it
needs its moment. Like it was actually good that
(01:45):
I've taken a little bit of time before I recorded this.
So that way I get to see other people's reactions and
everything. But that halftime show was
something choreography. I think a lot of people forget
that, you know, based on the criticisms that I hear, Like
Kendrick, he is a rapper, he's MC like, so if you've ever been
to a rap concert, I remember thevery first time I went to see
(02:06):
Jay-Z in concert, like that's what you're going to get.
He's going to move around through the stage and he's going
to have a hype man. And with rap concerts, it's all
about the music. Like, you know, other concerts
you could probably go and you might not know the lyrics and
you can survive and you can makeit.
But when you go to like a hip hop or rap concert, however you
want to call the genre, wheneveryou go to like a hip hop
(02:27):
concert, like you need to know those lyrics because there's no
dancing. There's no fireworks to distract
you. It's just them there.
So the fact that there was choreography, there was
movement, there was, you know, breath control.
He went from this side of the stadium to that side like he
carried himself. And I think about other Super
Bowl performances that I've seenbecause literally I cannot even
tell you who has won the last two 345, 6 Super Bowls.
(02:51):
Like I've watched them, but I watched them for the halftime
show. You know, OK, I watched them for
the halftime show. So over the years, I've seen
other great acts. And when they do their thing,
they're always going to bring other people along.
And he did. He brought Scissor to the stage
and Serena surprised. But for the most part, he
carried. He did a lot of the heavy
lifting, and I think that's commendable for a rapper to be
(03:13):
able to do. I think what he did, you know,
with Samuel L Jackson coming in there with his uncle, Uncle Sam,
Uncle Sam, Uncle Tom, Uncle Sam,that was brilliant, by the way.
It caught me off guard. I was like, huh, Django
unchanged. But everything about it was
thoughtful. There was artistry, you know?
And then he had to let people know, like, didn't I let you
(03:36):
know that I'm a Rottweiler? So still don't play with me.
So all those rumors talking about I could not perform the
song Watch, you know, media is just so fascinating to me.
So at this point, I don't even know, like maybe Drake did try
to stop him from performing or maybe they just put it out there
to, you know, create. I don't know.
But either way, he said, forget what you heard, Bam like.
(03:58):
And this man is like, I hope thelesson that people take away
from here, well, multiple lessons first, don't talk about
anybody's family. Don't talk about anybody's wife
because that person if they truly love their family and they
truly love their spouse, they will take you to the down below
below the down below. They will nama nama you.
(04:21):
There's no other way to say, like for those who are not
African that are listening, theywill rumble you, they will
destroy you. So that's the first thing.
And then the second lesson you must learn is the power of a
short man. OK, short man.
I don't know what it is like. All the short man that I've
known in my life, I'm like they own 59,000 when the rest of us
(04:42):
are barely like existing at 75%.These people, short people in
general, all like on 250%, you mess with a short person like
all their pride, all that they got to prove.
So now all you did was say helloand now they must take you to
hell. Short people are not the people
(05:04):
to play with. And I don't know what it is.
That man said. Hey, Drake.
It looks straight at the camera on a Super Bowl stage, and I've
seen different interpretations even of his necklace.
Apparently it's a company that he has.
But like, there's so many layersto that whole performance that
there's no way that one explanation is there for
everything because that's just not how Kendrick works.
(05:26):
I know he says FA double entendre, you know, but that's
just not how his brain works. Of course he's going to kill two
birds with one stone. It is possible with the whole
Serena thing that you know, whenshe did the Crip Walker at
Wimbledon and that was so controversial and it was made
for it to look like it was crassbehavior.
It was not acceptable. It's possible and I think it is,
(05:46):
you know, absolutely right that that is part of why he wanted to
have her on stage. Like come on my stage and crip
walk. But it can serve 2 purposes.
So don't play with us. Don't come back out here and be
like, well, this is the only reason.
No, it's not. We know what we know.
We can see what we see. I mean, that's the most
effective existence. Like why are we doing just one
thing to just do one thing? If we do 1 action and should
(06:08):
serve 2 purposes, better have even 3.
So we're killing two birds with one stone.
You give Serena a chance to say I'm putting our culture on this.
That she did. It wasn't classless.
It was a representation of her culture.
And Oh yeah. Hey, Drake, you remember when
you were talking all that crap about her husband, about her and
you were going on a tyrant? I think everybody has forgotten
that part because I've seen so many reactions of people like,
(06:30):
well, if I'm that hung up over her ex, my husband should be
worried. Well, again, there are
boundaries when it comes to men and their women, like, and I
don't understand why Mr. Aubrey Graham did not understand these
things. And I feel like it really
highlights the fact that he really is missing, which is at
the core of everything that thishas turned into, like the
(06:51):
culture that he has benefited from, the culture that he tries
to emulate in his music. At the core of him, he has not
truly understood it. I will sit here and I'm an
African, and I can tell you thatAfrican American culture is
something that I have consumed, something that I have studied,
something that I've tried to truly understand.
And even as I sit here today where I feel like I do have a
(07:12):
grasp of it to a certain level, I'll be the first to say there
are still nuances that I don't fully understand.
And there are things that I willnot get because at the end of
the day, it is a culture that I am a part of because of living
in America. But it was not a culture that
was necessarily mine, right? It's a culture that I've
adopted. It's a culture that I love.
It's a culture that I love. Like all different aspects of
(07:34):
it. And I've tried to fully
understand it because to say I appreciate something, it just
can't be because of music. But like, truly understand the
plight of black people in this country, the things that they
have done to pave the way for Tony to come into this country
and to be able to succeed. I know I'm going off in a little
bit of a tangent here, but it's something that I think every
African live in, whether you're living here, whether you're
(07:55):
living in the UK, understanding the plight of the people that
are right there before you got there.
So if you move to Norway and there are black people that have
lived there longer than you understanding their history, why
did they even move here? What is the story?
Because I think, you know, it's just common sense for one.
But to truly say you're going tobe part of a culture, first you
need to just study it. And I think that's highlighted
with this whole Drake thing because there are parts of
(08:17):
African American culture, like the nuances of it.
One of them is like, you know, when you talk about life in the
streets, I am nowhere from the streets.
I don't know anything about the streets.
But, you know, respect, even with the whole Jay-Z case that's
happening, part of what the things that he's saying is like,
that's just not the code of how we move like in the streets, how
we are as people. So there are things there to
(08:38):
study. And I think what is being
highlighted for him is that he has missed the mark.
He has pursued something, gottena lot of benefit from it, but at
the core of it, he truly does not understand the essence of a
people. And when you do it in that way,
you form like a caricature. So it almost becomes like a
joke. It's not something serious
(08:58):
because you're taking aspects ofit that you truly don't even
understand. You don't even know placement of
it, but all you're doing is justregurgitating it back in hopes
that you can at the end of the day, make a mighty dollar.
It's not necessarily because youeven value that culture or value
what the people have to bring isthis idea Like, you know what?
I can come in here and I can emulate these things and I can
(09:21):
do these things. It's for me to take, and it's
not necessarily for me to give. I just saw that he came out with
an album. And again, I haven't listened to
it, but I'm just like, OK, so now you did an album with
somebody else. Again, why can't you stand on
your own and why can't you just bring out stuff on your own?
I don't know what it is for Mr. Aubrey.
(09:41):
I don't know what it is that he needs to like just search within
himself because he has had some great hits.
But if you're saying like you can't come out with anything
that's just like you, then maybesome work needs to be done.
I'm sure the album is great, butI'm like, didn't you come out
with album of 21 Savage? Didn't you do like?
And aren't people always talkingabout how you have Ghost Riders
and everything? So it's time.
(10:03):
And it's just unfortunate because there are so many people
out there that will put in the work, that will try to make it
in the music industry that will never get a chance that a Drake
has gotten. And I think at the core of it,
like that is what Kendrick is trying to say.
Like you actually irritate me because this is something that I
breathe, I live, I walk out of my house.
There are people like there are things around my life that
reinforces it. And here you are at the core of
(10:25):
you, you don't even get it, but you are benefiting from it.
And that can irritate somebody. And I truly get it.
So same thing with the whole Serena thing, like if you did
not violate her by talking abouther husband talking like you
would not be put in that situation.
So did Serena get a chance to creep walk again because
somebody had told her that was crass behavior and does not
belong on the tennis court? Absolutely.
(10:46):
But was it also a message to Drake?
I absolutely believe it. And I know like, you know, for
PR purposes she has to come backand be like, oh, it's not
because of that because it makesher look petty.
But he can serve 2 purposes. Like honey, we get it.
We already told you we were riding at dawn with you, so
we're still riding. We see both.
OK, you did it for two things. We got it, we got it.
So that's my little spiel on thehalftime show.
It was a great show. I've seen so many different
(11:08):
videos of people, like doing hisdance moves and I have seen, I
wish I remember her name now, but there's a young lady, young
African American lady that actually did the choreography
for that show as far as producing the whole thing.
So I have been seeing things online, kind of giving her her
kudos and her flowers. And that's what I always love.
Like that's how my brain always works.
And I've talked about it before.Your light will shine bright.
(11:29):
You'll still be who you are. It did not take anything away
from Kendrick's performance to give, you know, that young lady
her kudos for choreographing that whole thing.
Like she got to shine and he gotto shine and nobody's light was
any dimmer. So that is that.
Next up, Rihanna has been serving us looks as she's going
out with her BAE to the courthouse.
She said life is my runway. I'm going to give you these
(11:51):
snakeskin boots. Oh, Lord, I cannot talk the
snakeskin boots. I'm going to give you these
snakeskin boots. OK.
And then she gave you the trash.I've seen like all the different
looks and everything that she's been bringing and in just true
Rihanna fashion and I love it. And I saw their post that she
made for Valentine's Day and it was so cheeky and cute.
(12:13):
I haven't really been following the court case.
I don't want to speak on the case because I have not been
following it. Like I said, I don't know all
the intricacies of it. All I know is that he could face
up to 20 years in jail. Apparently he was given an
opportunity to take a plea deal that was going to be 6 months,
but he did not do it. So he must have confidence in
his representation that they're going to handle things and that
(12:33):
a result will come out for him That's favourable.
Yeah. I can't imagine, like, her being
in this position that she's in today in this country that we're
in the climate that we're in. I just hope that for more of our
African American brothers and sisters, that we will just be
more cautious about the things that we do.
Just like what I was saying lastweek.
(12:53):
Like once you come from that place where you're operating,
like, OK, everything I do has aneffect not only on my life but
on people around me and for eventhose that are far reaching from
me. So that is what we all have to
work to make sure we unveil ourselves from.
That's that. Next story is Miss Chloe Bailey
and Mr. Berna. OK Chloe said she's staying in
(13:13):
Lagos. OK Chloe said America where
Chloe said America is giving me Boo Boo right now.
Chloe said I'd rather be a queen.
Chloe said I'm sticking with him.
Chloe's parents and family said he's a Goodman Savannah, Chloe
said. I'd rather take Pam.
Nadia, Chloe said, Oh my goodness, like when I saw that
(13:35):
little clip, I was like, okay, dirty December has turned into
dirty January, Dirty February. I mean, we don't know how long
this is going to keep going on, but I mean, he pulled out the
little watch and they're when they walk into the car, he opens
the car for I said, OK, pure romance.
Look at that. It's just giving pure romance,
just romanticizing romantically romance.
(13:56):
I mean, I was not expecting thatbecause I literally thought like
they had their little fling and she flew back home.
Chloe said no, I'm going to be on Real Housewives of Lagos.
Chloe said. My next album is going to be
Afro Beats. What Chloe said.
That's going to be my new What Chloe's Chloe said.
I'm staying in Africa, OK, I'm like, Mama, are you coming back
(14:17):
home? Is you American or is you
Nigerian? Chloe said I want to be
Nigerian. Oh my gosh.
So they are an item, OK, They they have let you know.
We have heard it. Thank you, Chloe.
OK. And 1st, I'm like, OK, maybe
they're just kind of like, you know, feeling each other or
whatever, but they look like they're genuinely in the
relationship. So going forth, honey, it looks
(14:41):
like you want to be Mrs. Udogu and we support you.
You know, we always like a good diaspora collaboration.
Look at you going back. And honey, let me tell you, make
sure you have your antennas or pool.
I want these romance to be good for you.
But also know that let me tell you something.
African women, we are forced to be strong just as much as
(15:02):
African American women are forced to be strong.
It's just a different way of being strong, just so you know
that, But the same requirement of strength, you know, that even
me at this age I'm trying to work back from, I said I do not
want to be strong no more. But I'm letting you know that
strong African American woman that you have seen, that the
strong African woman is there too.
So enjoy your romance. Enjoy the budding part of it,
(15:23):
the beautiful part of it. Because, yeah, some shenanigans
are going to come your way. Be on alert, be smart.
You know, I cannot believe that she's just rainbows and
chocolates and, you know, 4 babies, cats and dogs and cutesy
and all that. That stuff is there.
But ma'am, when you need to put foot on necks, I need you to
(15:44):
strut, I need you to make sure you have on your 8 inch heels
because there will be situationsthat will come up, honey, that
you will need to put your foot on some necks.
And do not hesitate. But always keep it classy.
Always do it, you know, composed.
Do not let anybody take you out of your womanhood, OK?
But let them know I'm not the one.
(16:05):
Try somebody else because let metell you, it will be tried.
So I wish you and Oluwaboda goodluck.
Maybe we'll see, you know, lead to something coming from all of
that. You never know.
But no genuinely wish them well. They truly look like they're in
love and I hope it pans out for them.
But if it doesn't, that's something that this experience
that this relationship was meantto teach her and to foster in
(16:28):
her and it's beautiful in its own right.
I hope that when these relationships happen with, you
know, people on the continent and then people in diaspora and
people that maybe at the time they really didn't know much
about African culture, and they get to have that exposure that
whatever pans out, however the relationship turns out, you
know, it's going to be what it is.
We pray it works out for you. We pray that you go off into
(16:48):
bliss. But even if you don't, I hope
that the connection you make with the continent of Africa,
with a particular country, with a particular people, that that
part is not lost because that isa beautiful thing and that is a
big part of your identity. So that's my little advice
there. And the last story, Hey, God,
God, God Chloe, you will see what I just said about there
(17:10):
will be people who want to put foot on your neck. 2 faced Adiva
has already collected a new fiance.
Hey, you know when you see online a lot of times when
people are like they would describe a certain man and they
would like God please let him pass me by.
What? When I saw this story, I was
like the devil is a lie. Excuse me, Sir, your ex-wife is
(17:33):
still, from what we've heard, you know, through the streets.
Because I don't know, Annie, what we heard through the
streets, still getting treatment, still working through
the mental torture that you havetortured her and you are over
here leaving La Vida loca 2 minutes later, engaging somebody
else. And then the engagement.
What kind of. Yeah.
Yeah. Engagement.
What is happening here? I'm sorry.
(17:56):
I'm two moments like this is what made me realize like I'm
getting older and I'm OK with itbecause I'm like the devil is a
lie. That's how you going to propose
to me is going to be a no for medog in the words of a great
Randy Jackson is going to be a no for me dog because you are
not going to waste my time with an engagement and proposal like
that. So first of all, that girl, I
(18:16):
don't even know her name and I don't even care to know her
name, but the only thing I can say is, girl, anything that you
have that that woman did not have, okay, We all have the same
things, it's just packaged differently.
You know when you order package from Amazon, some of them come
in short box, some of them come in medium box, other ones they
come in big box. But honey, we still get it
delivered to the same house. It's still the same package.
So there's nothing that you havethat that woman did not have.
(18:38):
I know when you're with that mannow, he's singing sweet nothings
to you. He's telling you, making you
feel like it was her. She was a problem.
I'm never going to be that. I'm going to.
OK. There's nothing you have that
that Lady did not have. So you saw you have seen how
this person has disgraced the person that they were with for a
long time. And then you said, that's the
(18:59):
place I want to rest my head. You know, let's just call it for
whatever it is. Just say, you know, he has a
certain status. There's money attached to it.
Because a lot of times if there's no money involved, we
wouldn't even have these storiesthe way we have it.
Like he's still out there embarrassing his wife.
And then you say, oh, my fiance.Wow, wow.
(19:21):
Oh, Lord, that story. I was like, stop it.
This scrumped that. I scrumped in my head when I saw
Annie. You have so far though.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no wherever Annie is.
Because I did read stories aboutlike how I think it said Token
Mackinwa and Tia Savage at the time.
I don't know how true that is, are the ones that kind of like
(19:41):
have rallied around her and helpher.
I hope her friends continue to show up like that for her.
I know there was like 2 episodesago where I talked about the
relationship with Swanky and that's his own thing.
It's going to stand there, it's going to be there, but you don't
kick somebody when they're down.So I hope that never gave that
impression. Like that was what I was doing.
I was just talking at the time and actually when that episode
came out, a lot of the things that I know now, I didn't even
know then. That I hope she's going to have
(20:04):
the support system around her. People are going to be around
her, that care for her and love her and wherever she's at, I
hope she knows that it's going to get better.
And I hope when she comes out ofthis like she has a better sense
of who she is, that Annie 2.0 isgoing to be like, you know what?
If I even get a whiff of the rubbish nonsense that I had had
to put up, if I haven't get a whiff of it from anybody is
(20:26):
going to be asta la vie. I'm going to peace out.
I hope that's one of the biggestlessons she learned.
Like at this stage of your life, once you get over this, because
I do believe you'll get over it.You're stronger than you know,
even despite everything else that you had going on, you still
found a way to like get on a show and make a a name for
yourself and try to reach out and just be a human being that
was in some way capacity, like detached from this man that all
(20:48):
your identity was tied around him.
And that's commendable. So I hope she knows like she's
going to make it through this. And clearly, it seems like she
has at least some form of support system around her.
But when she does, I need Annie 2.0 to come out and be that bad
that she is OK. All right, I need you to come
out. I need you to be at peace.
You know, even the relationship we were talking about last time
(21:08):
was swanky. I hope that there will be some
reconciliation there because sometimes when somebody's going
through stuff, you're even fighting with like your friends
or fighting with people, but it's not even them you're
fighting. It's the person and the fact
that you can't fight that person.
So then you're fighting Mary andJohn and Cindy and Loretta and
not me naming all, I'm just naming random names.
(21:29):
So those names don't mean anything.
You're fighting everybody. You're just fighting everybody
everywhere you're going. But you know it's because of
what the individual is going through.
So hopefully your friends will give you grace.
But once your head is on straight, I feel like those
other things will come naturallytoo.
And so I pray you find peace, Miss Annie Macaulay.
And I hope wherever you are thatyou know that you are strong,
(21:53):
that even in this time, like it might feel like it's so bleak
that you, you don't know where you're going and how you're
going to get out of this, but you will because you're built
and you're made for this. And be at the place where you're
not even seeking revenge for somebody like get to that point
of healing. Like however he has hurt you,
whatever pain he has caused you, that you get to the point where
it's like, you know what? I don't even need to harm you.
(22:15):
I don't even need to hurt you because I am freeing myself from
that because you don't even wantno parts to do with it.
Everything by yourself moving forward as you heal, let it just
be about positivity. All the pain and the hurt there.
Acknowledge it, work through it.Talk to yourself about, you
know, why did I allow these things?
How can I then show up for myself next time as a better
human being? And once you have worked on
that, you let God handle the rest.
(22:36):
All I know is that my God has never failed me in this life,
okay? Anything that somebody thinks
they're doing to me, you're not doing to me or you're doing it
to yourself because I'm just going to work on me.
I'm going to stay in my lane trying to be the best me that I
can be. And I let go handle the rest.
And all the times in my life, I've always said, God, you
handle it. His handling has been better
(22:58):
than mine because when I'm handling it, there's stress
there. For me to go after you and to
try to make your life as miserable as you have made mine,
that's going to require energy out of me.
That's going to take things out of me.
That's quite honestly that man, Miss Annie, He does not deserve
anything else. And more energy.
No, nothing else from you. So even to even go after him or
to try to, that's you also giving him something.
(23:20):
Don't give him anything else. Like when you wipe your hand,
you wipe your hand and you leavehim at the dos bin.
You leave him there and he'll bethe one to because it's also
another form of control because that's when you will see him Now
he'll be well. Let me do this.
Let me let me see if I can do this.
And then not one ounce of energy, not a Dang nothing.
You will not get nothing. OK, So I hope you find your
(23:43):
peace. So today's episode, I wanted to
talk about a topic that I feel like will be beneficial for us.
You know, I do look at the demographic of who's listening
to the podcast and you know, it just so happened that a lot of
the listeners happened to be around my age.
So women in our 30s, and I've just been easing into the new
year. Last episode I was about how I
use like ashwagandha and stuff. So that's really what kind of
(24:06):
made me want to do this episode, just talking about health and
the things that we can do to have optimal health for us in
our 30s, living as millennial women, trying to survive and
make it and be the best that we can be.
OK, So this episode is going to be about us.
What are the things that we can do to maintain optimal health
for us being in the stages that we're in?
And what has the research shown?Right?
(24:26):
So I'm talking about essential supplements and essential things
that we can incorporate into ourlives.
Some of these things I've tried, some of them there's research
out there and I'm going to try, like I say all the time on this
podcast, I don't come here pretending to be an expert.
Like I'm going through life withyou.
We are literally going through life together.
So the ones that I've tried thatI can tell you, OK, this and
this and this, and then they're ones I haven't tried and we're
(24:49):
going to do it together. But based on the research, I
just wanted to come on and I just wanted to share.
So just remembering like as we enter into our 30s, our bodies
are changing, our nutritional needs are changing.
I've always been the girl that Ieat one thing and I gained 5
lbs. I breathe air and I gained 10.
But, you know, I've been around the girls who, you know, can eat
a whole mountain of food and they come back and they have
(25:10):
hits back, you know, But then asyou get older, your body
changes. Like, it just comes with a
territory. Even me that's here, like, I
used to run track when I was younger and my body looked a
certain way. And after childbirth and
whatever, there are things aboutmy body that has never gone back
to how it was. So like, our body is going to
change. Our nutritional needs are going
to change based on how our society is, what we need to
(25:32):
survive and make it is going to change.
I feel like we are living more stressful lives now than the
generations that came before us.They had their stresses, but we
have so much more. Like everything that they have,
the oath we have, the things that we are dealing with now
that they have never been able to understand.
So what are the best supplementsthat we can have for memory?
Because I think at this age we have to start talking about
(25:53):
memory. I know it's crazy.
Like we always joke about it as women.
I say it all the time, like eversince I had kids, I can't
remember the Dang thing. But I think this is the time for
us to start thinking about that stuff.
Like how can we safeguard it? What are the things that we can
look for? What are the supplements we can
take so that we can put our bestfoot forward?
Because dementia is real. If you're in healthcare, you're
going to know it. It is there.
(26:15):
So what are the things that we can feed our brains to make sure
that we are in tip top shape with our memory?
Stress. Like I said, our lives are now
more stressful than ever. For women, bone health is very
important as we're getting older.
So we're going to talk about that a little bit.
And I don't know about you, but I'm at a season at the time of
my life where I want my skin to be glowing when I go out, even
if it's my makeup. But, you know, the skin care on
(26:37):
that, the makeup will show up through the makeup.
Yeah. I just give you guys a gem, but
I want my skin to be glowing. I want my skin to be healthy.
So what are the things that I'm trying, What are the things that
I've read about that I'm going to try that I'm going to
incorporate to kind of help me to be the best?
Because, you know, we want to glow from within and we
(26:57):
sometimes we need to help ourselves to glow from within.
And then reproductive health. And this one is the one that's
dear and close to my heart. I have known too many women that
are out there, myself included, that are suffering from fibroids
and cysts and PCOS and all thesehormonal things.
And it's a struggle for us. And sometimes I do feel
disheartened because I feel likeif there is the research, I feel
(27:19):
like there's not enough focusingon.
Sometimes there's even us as African American women and we
don't talk about it enough. So I decided that I'm going to
use my platforms every now and then to kind of shed light on
that issue and, you know, bring up new research that might be
out there, new things that I'm trying to kind of help to heal
myself from within. I know there are lots of natural
remedies and that's one of the things I told myself this year
(27:42):
was like, I'm going to try some of these like natural remedies
for curing myself of my fibroidsand CIS and all the hormonal
issues that I have. So hopefully it won't be a too
long of an episode and we can cover some ground.
So the first one, memory and cognition.
This matters because as we get older, we're going to have brain
fog. We're going to have lapses in
(28:02):
our memory. We're not as sharp as we once
used to be. Before, I could go to a grocery
store, I can remember everythingI need to go.
Now when I enter the groceries, I'm like, why am I here?
Like, you know how many times that happens to me?
I'm like, I came to this room for something.
I know why I came here. OK, let me retrace my step.
Let me walk back. And maybe by the time I enter
back, I will remember why I'm here.
(28:24):
So if that happens to you often, like it happens to me, OK, these
are the things that we can take.I used to be better at this.
And fish oil is always tricky for me because sometimes like I
don't like the after taste of itand I need to look to see if
they have like fish oil that's maybe gummies or something.
But I know like the best and potent ones are going to be like
the capsules that have like the oil inside, but taking like your
(28:45):
fish oil, so your omega-3 fatty acids.
So you know, you take your fish oil supplements, but you can
have like flax seeds, chia seeds, algae based supplements.
So maybe that's something I can look into.
There is this YouTube that I love watching her videos.
Her channel is called Tish Cooksand I just love her videos.
Like everything she's making is fresh and wholesome and good for
(29:05):
you. So I've been trying to like copy
some of her recipes and incorporate them into my lives.
And she uses like a lot of the flax seed and chia seeds.
So I actually did order some last time I did groceries, but I
haven't got around yet to like making like the oatmeal where I
kind of sprinkled that on the top.
So I've taken fish oil on and off throughout the years and
that's something I will continueto do.
So I recommend you to do that aswell to get your fatty acids.
(29:27):
But with the chia seeds, flax seeds, maybe that's something
that you can try. This is another one that I've
read about ginkgo biloba, but I have never taken ginkgo, so I
don't know. But I remember from nursing
school, I feel like ginkgo interacts a lot with
medications. So that's just a disclaimer
before I even get any further here.
(29:48):
I am not your nurse, I'm not your doctor.
So anything that I'm bringing uphere, if you take meds or just
anything, always go back with your practitioner because when
you go in and say, OK, I want tostart this supplement, they are
supposed to look at all the medsthat you're taking and what
could interact with what. So you know, that's the crazy
thing. Like when you're a nurse or
you're somebody in healthcare field, people walk up to you and
(30:09):
they expect you to just know everything.
Like at the back of the end, they're like, why am I hurt?
My stomach hurts. Do you think why that could be?
And I'm like, I don't know what you eat.
You pooped lately, like my second sister last removed her
big toe be hurting every time itrains.
You know why that is? No, ma'am, I don't.
You're not my patient. I don't know your history.
(30:29):
No. So like people just be thinking
that you're just an expert that should just know everything.
Everybody gets specialized. And actually, as I go more and
more into the healthcare field, I appreciate the specialization.
Like pick your lane and then youjust know the heck out of that
lane because I'm not going to know everything.
So all I know is ginkgo effects some of the meds just like
(30:50):
grapefruit. So if you like have a lot of
meds that you're taking, they recommend that you don't drink
grapefruit juice because it slows your gastric emptying.
So then the meds will stay in your system longer.
So it interferes with the efficacy of a lot of
medications. That's that's a lot of mouthful
to get out of my mouth. And why is this important?
Because the research has shown that Omega threes are essential
(31:12):
for our cognitive health, especially DHA that's included
in them. And then that is great for
memory retention. It doesn't always have to be in
a pill form. I think that's why I'm giving
you the option to say, OK, chia seeds, flax seeds, because I am
one of them. There are lots of people out
there who are like moving towards OK, what are more
natural ways that I can still get the supplements that I need?
So Omega threes are really, really good as we're being moms
(31:36):
and people are asking us 55 things and we can't remember
where we put our keys, and we can't remember sometimes our own
children's names. Yeah, that has happened to me.
I'm looking at my child and I'm like you.
What's your name? I know I gave you a name.
There's a name that I named you,but I cannot remember it right
now. But you child, come here.
All right, the next one is stress.
(31:58):
And like I said, stress and mental well-being.
If you have listened to this podcast long enough, you know, I
am an advocate for getting therapy, taking care of your
mental health. So that is no different.
You need to take care of it in our 30s, you know, it's one of
the most stressful times of our lives because I was just talking
about this with somebody like it's that transition period.
Like we are now bonafide parents.
People are truly like depending on us for their livelihood.
(32:20):
Their everything and just even wrapping your brain around all
the things that people are depending on you for can make
you stay up all night. OK, so you have that with like
your kids and then your parents are like in that transition
phase because most likely like they are getting ready to retire
or they are already retired. So you are at the stage like
where it's starting already where you're going to be taking
(32:42):
care of your parents. And then you are still growing
because even though we're in our30s, like there's still things
that we're trying to work through, especially if you're
going through therapy, you're trying to work through your
traumas of things. You're still trying to be a
better human being. So you're growing yourself.
You are responsible for the people that you have birthed and
brought into this earth. And then now your parents, it's
(33:02):
starting that process of like the reversal where you become
the parent to them. That's a lot.
And then you want to add that towork stress and financial and
depending on what career you pick, you know, social stresses
and like it's a lot. It is a lot.
The way our lives are set up, weare stressed.
So what are the ways that we canhelp with stress?
(33:25):
I have told you guys about AshwaGandha last time and I'll keep
talking about the Ashwa and the Gandha.
OK. It is good for me.
I have loved it. I use it when I'm trying to
sleep, but you can drink it any time of the day.
I just used to drink it before Isleep because I just find like I
have much more restful sleep. Maybe I'll try incorporating it
through different times of the day and see what the result is.
(33:45):
As far as with that, that's where I'm at.
The next one, I haven't tried this one.
It is called Rhodiola rosia. I looked it up.
I hope I'm pronouncing it right, but it's spelled RHODIOLA and
that one also helps to fight fatigue and helps with balancing
your energy. So I already use ashwagandha,
going to do more research on therosea and see if I can
(34:08):
incorporate that as well. But why is this stuff important?
Because the research does show that ashwagandha helps.
Like I said last time, it's an adapt to nogen.
So it helps to lower your cortisol level, helps you to
manage stress, and it reduces your anxiety levels as well.
So we need that. So get therapy and take some
Ashwagandha. OK, next one, bone health, it's
(34:32):
so important. Now, if you're not doing any
kind of weight lifting in your exercise regimen or you know,
just even if it's body weights, I recommend for you to do it.
Even if you're doing a lot of cardio, put in at least one or
two workouts in there where you're doing push ups, you know,
doing even if it's light weights.
But weight lifting is great for us as women as we are getting
older to maintain that bone health and strength.
(34:54):
OK Strength training helps us with maintaining our bone
health. So later on, you know, you lose
density as you're in your 30s, and then it keeps increasing as
you get older. You've heard of osteoporosis
before. So these are the supplements
that you can take. You can take calcium with
vitamin D, and those two together are good for your bone
health. And then you can take magnesium.
(35:15):
And the magnesium helps you to absorb the calcium properly.
And magnesium also helps you to like sleep better and helps you
to like poop. OK, I said what I said.
You heard what? You heard the P word.
OK, I'm going to be classier than that.
It helps you to have proper bowel movement.
So the mag really does help. I wish I was more consistent
(35:37):
with my magnesium, I'm not goingto lie.
Because like, I know that I should be taking it.
And then when I take it, I'll belike, oh, yeah, this needs to be
part of my regimen. And then over like six months
and I haven't taken that mug. So I am going to work on making
sure like I have my little pill containers together with these
things. There are certain ones that I, I
take to work with me so I can always take them, but I'm going
to make it like part of my routine, like even before I go
to work. So that way I'm having all my
(35:58):
bases covered. So if you don't get enough
sunlight, you definitely need vitamin D3 because I know I
mentioned like calcium and vitamin D, but especially D3.
And there has been research in the past that even shows the
combination of vitamin D3 and fish oil.
Like sometimes, you know, when you're starting out, you're
like, I cannot take 55 of these. If it's just those two, please
(36:18):
put those two into your regimen. That fish oil and that vitamin
D3, put it into your regimen. Like those two, they are needed
for this face that we are in. All right.
The next part is your beautiful skin and anti age.
And because we're going to be doing it, you know, if you're
able to and you're one of those women who aspire to that
lifestyle, you can go and get you some fillers and Botox.
(36:39):
I don't do it myself, but I willgive you a Botox shot.
I will put fillers in for you. You know what it is you want to
do. Just don't overdo it.
Like everything is just good in moderation.
Because I've seen like the girlswho are 14 and they're getting
these fillers and I'm like, why?You don't need it.
I feel like now in our 30s, likewhen you might start seeing
(37:00):
little things here and there. You can start a little bit, but
don't overdo it. Like don't get too caught up in
the sales of people just sellingyou all this stuff and you're
just overdoing it. But if you don't want to go that
route, which I don't blame you, if you want to go another route,
you can do collagen. So I have done collagen before
and I've tried so many. I've tried that.
The cow one, what is it that will have like a little brown
(37:22):
Ting to it when you put it in the water?
And I've tried the ones that dissolve into things.
I've tried the flavored ones. Just find the one that works
well for you. But find collagen that you can
put into your smoothies or your water or your juice to help with
elasticity for your skin. Vitamin CI cannot say that
enough. And for me, I'm like, get me the
highest potency of vitamin C, Give it to me.
(37:43):
I take it. And hyalonic acid.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That hyalonic acid, I've been
using Corsair X's moisturizer and it's a hyalonic acid 1.
And when I first started using Everybody Black, Oh, my God,
your skin looks so different. What's going on?
And it was because of the hyalonic acid like that.
And I've been working on drinking more water.
(38:03):
So again, there are things that I've tried and there are things
I've not tried. Especially when you're working
as a healthcare person, you feellike you don't have time.
But I started carrying Stanley Cup.
Now I even have a different cup that I'm carrying right now, but
it's the same 40 oz. So my goal, every day I tell
myself I should drink at least two of those 40 oz.
So I'm getting at least 80. Some days I'm doing so great.
I'm on my third cup. But either way, get enough
(38:25):
water, get enough hydration intoyour system that's going to show
up in your skin. And then hyaluronic acid, you
can, you know, use a moisturizerthat has that, your vitamin C,
take it, drink it and put it on the skin.
OK. Yeah.
So those are the things that we're going to do to make sure
that our skin is glowing, we're feeling good, we look good.
(38:47):
And if you do these things and your skin is still not acting
the way you want it to, go and see a professional.
I wish I'd done that earlier. Go and see a dermatologist.
It's going to be worth your while.
When I finally saw the dermatologist based on the needs
of my skin, because I already have skin issues, then they're
able to do compounded medications.
I never even knew this, OK, I'lljust be like, OK, I need this.
(39:07):
Let me go to the store and buy that.
That addresses that. But your dermatologist can come
up with medications, compounded medications that are specific to
your needs and what you're trying to achieve with your
skin. And I promise you, you will see
results. Chef's kiss like no other.
And retinol. I'm a big fan of retinol.
I've been using it now for at least like five years.
(39:28):
There are times when I've used it on and off, but I've been
consistent like in this past year and I would say I'm using
retinol like at least every other day.
I love it. So take care of your skin.
It will thank you for it later on the body.
Hey, put your lotion, get you somebody oil.
Just the other day I made a big order from ancient cosmetics and
they have these beautiful body butters that smell so good.
(39:48):
And then you pair it with a niceoil.
Always moisturize, get you a good nice thick lotion that you
can put on. This is for winter time.
Don't be out here in this Texas heat putting on all that lotion
during the summertime. You oil your body and that's it.
Nobody wants you to be sweating up and all like this.
All right, So the last part, like I promise, is our
reproductive health. And a lot of us suffer from
(40:08):
these things. And I'm still trying to figure
it out. It's been a point of contention
for me in my life. I have suffered a lot in
silence. I have screamed at the top of my
lungs and other parts and I am still trying to figure some of
this stuff out. So I've heard of inositol and
that's supposed to help with like insulin sensitivity and
supporting like your ovarian health if you have PCOS.
(40:32):
I think I've mentioned before that I feel like I have, but
I've never been like fully diagnosed with it.
I'm going to do more research into it because now when I'm
dealing with like hormonal stuff, I'm treading lightly
because I do not want to do anything that's going to throw
me so off balance that I end up taking 10 steps back.
And one of the ways that catering shows up for me is
always with my skin. So whenever I'm doing things
that are hormonal, I'm always weary of making sure that my
(40:56):
skin on my face does not suffer as a result of that.
Because a lot of times if I havehormonal issues going on that
are very huge is going to show up as like hyperpigmentation on
my skin is going to show up for me as cystic acne.
It like my skin on my face will let me know everything that's
happening within my body. Like, that's how I know, OK, my
hormones are out of whack right now, you know, if I have
excessive dryness and all these things like.
(41:18):
So, yeah, there's turmeric extract.
I've taken turmeric here and there, but I've not consistently
done it. But apparently it's the circumen
in the turmeric that helps with inflammation, and that has been
linked to reducing the internal inflammation, which, you know,
is there with fibroids and cysts.
I mean, that's part of like why so painful for us during that
(41:39):
time of the month when we're, you know, riding ourselves of,
you know, the good old lining ofthe uterus.
Coenzyme 10. I've heard of this growing up,
but I've never taken it. It's like one of those
supplements that like I heard like on infomercials growing up,
but I've never actually taken coenzyme 10 before.
But it's supposed to support like the quality of your eggs
(42:02):
and supposed to like help you with your metabolic health.
So I'm going to look into that to see if I can add it.
And again, vitamin D, that's whyI said, if you're going to take
two things out of all these supplements that I'm mentioning,
your vitamin DD3 and your Omega fatty acids, so your fish oil
and all of that, those two, if you're going to start and you
(42:24):
say, let me just start with two, please let it be those two
because they're so essential that vitamin D has shown up what
now in three things that we havetalked about.
It is essential for women in ourage group, women in our 30s to
take those two supplements. I want to end it with this.
Whenever you're looking for brands, you know, there might be
other things out there that you might know of that you want to
(42:45):
try. And I think just seeking just
better health. Just don't overdo it.
Don't just don't be out here taking like 30 supplements
because then what are we doing? But just always look for
supplements that are clean, thatare vegan.
That is one place I do not care about spending my extra money
in. And then find ones that you can
stick to. So I do not look down at anybody
that wants to take the gummy versions of things.
(43:07):
Just get your supplements in Mary Ruth, that brand.
I know when you go to the story, like, why the heck are you
asking me for $36, ma'am, for this damn vitamin?
Why? But you're going to pay it
because it's vegan and organic and good for you and it's
liquid. And I love that part of her
vitamins. I'm not even going to lie.
Like the multivitamins are liquid.
(43:27):
Sometimes it's just better for me because when I see those
pills, as I see the pill and thepill sees me and we see each
other, it's enough for me. No, it's not going to happen.
So Mary Ruth Organics, please help me so that I don't have to
spend $36. Help me, Mary Ruth Organics, by
sponsoring one of my episodes sothat I can now take my vitamins
(43:50):
for free. And I've heard of Rituals and
for them, like their stuff is solike aesthetically pleasing to
look at, but I've heard of theirbrand and I've seen people take
their stuff. So I think I'm going to dive
into the Rituals supplements pretty soon.
So that's another brand I haven't tried but I've heard
good things about. Just do your research.
(44:10):
Always make sure like you're going for the organic things,
the vegan things that don't havea lot of fillers because you
don't want all that excess stuffinto your body anyways, check
out Tish Cooks. I love her videos to death.
I wish I could create every single thing that she does, but
I think for me, it's the mindsetof where she comes from when
she's making her recipes. Like I'm going to keep it as
(44:30):
close to its natural form as possible.
And she has such diversity in recipes that you never feel like
you're missing out. So I have been loving her
channel and that's why I'm goingto leave you guys today because
I feel like we've had a very long episode, but I just wanted
to let you guys know, like your investment right now, and that's
really what it is. It's like an investment into
your body, into your future. That's why I said for let's just
(44:52):
start taking care of our memory. For us to address the stress
that we're feeling at this time is because we're trying to do
preventative care already beforethings get out of control, out
of hand. If you're not exercising
already, start. One of the things I incorporated
this year is trying to do 10,000steps a day.
For the most part, I'm averaginglike 3-4 days out of the week
that I'm getting those 10,000 steps done.
(45:12):
And we underestimate the importance of walking.
So even if you cannot go there and run 55 miles, try to
accomplish your 10,000 steps a day.
And I promise you, even if that's all you do, you will see
a difference. Don't complicate the process
uncomplicated as much as possible.
Keep it as simple as possible because that's what's going to
help you to stick to these new routines and these new things
(45:33):
that you're trying. So I want to encourage you to
also make sure you go to your practitioner.
Like I said before, don't be outhere trying stuff.
And then be like, well, Tony said, because that's happened to
me in the past. I'm like, I'm out here trying
just as much as you. And then he come back and like,
well, I threw up. Well, you took that and maybe
you threw up. Maybe it's the brand that you
have or maybe your body just didnot take to this supplement.
But how's that not my fault? So please do it's not me.
(45:56):
You are going out there, you're buying.
I'm recommending to you when youbuy, you take responsibility or
you go and you talk to your doctor.
So please see a practitioner, consult with somebody that knows
your healthcare. Make sure the things that you're
going to supplement do not interfere with any of your
medications that you might be taking.
Just do your homework on your health.
So I hope this episode you find it to be helpful.
(46:18):
I hope it's something you can come to time and time again.
And as I'm trying some of this stuff throughout this year, I'll
be sharing with you guys as I try new brands and as I try new
things and let you know how it'spanning out for me.
If you want to share it with a friend, go ahead and do that.
But like I talked about in the other episodes, part of my
healing, part of my journey is learning how to show up here
(46:39):
every week despite what's going on.
So if you go on Instagram right now, I haven't posted in a
while. I'm trying to get to the point
where I'm planning my posts likea week, two weeks, 3 weeks.
Hopefully we even get to a placewhere it's like a month ahead of
time. So I do apologize.
There will be more consistency with me posting on there.
You know, that is my hope and dream is for me to have better
engagement there. But there are things happening
(47:00):
in my life. There are things calling my
attention that sometimes all I can give is me just showing up
and recording an episode. But let it not come off as like,
oh, Tony is half a in something.I am not half a in anything out
here. I cannot talk about certain
things because I choose to have my privacy, but just know me
even showing up sometimes and recording these episodes, it
(47:23):
takes a lot out of me. So if you can just share with
anybody, leave me a review, leave a comment, show support in
any kind of way. I appreciate it from the bottom
of my heart and I am going to keep showing up here and I'm
going to keep recording episodesand I am doing the best that I
can. There are things that I want to
achieve and grow with this brandof what I'm trying to create
here and let it not come off in any kind of way, shape or form
(47:47):
that I don't take this seriouslybecause I do.
From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate you listening.
I hope this episode does something great for you.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend and I will catch you on
the next one. And anybody that shows up to you
this week talking crazy, want todo things that I want to take
you out of alignment, bring you out of your piece.
I need you to tell them it's a no for me, dog.
(48:08):
OK, I almost left you guys without giving you my
recommendation for the week as far as with our music.
So my first selection is going to be Onome by Odeal.
If you know Odeal, he's one thatdid the song.
So, so, so, so, so that was the song of the summer.
So his new song that I'm liking is called Onome.
(48:30):
It's spelled ONOME. And then my gospel selection of
the week is a song called Elohimby Sunday.
So the name of the artist is SUNDAE and the song is called
Elohim. So ELOHIM.
As far as books, I'm still reading The Secret Life of Baba
(48:51):
Shaggy's Wives. That book is entertaining.
Oh my gosh. Oh Lord, I feel like that book
will be like a great movie. So I want to research to see if
anybody has tried to like by therights to be able to make it
into a movie because I think it'll make a very entertaining
movie actually. And at first I was kind of
skeptical when I started readingit, but now I'm really getting
into it. And it's the same three things
(49:11):
that I mentioned to you guys last week.
I'm still reading the, you know, self compassion and I'm still
doing my pivot book on a daily basis.
So that's where we're still at with that.
And I hope that maybe you are reading those with me or maybe
you're not. Either way, that you're doing
something for your mind, body, spirit, soul, and now you have
some supplements to add to it. All right, I'll catch you guys
(49:33):
on the next one. Bye, guys, love you.
You just finished an episode of Banta with Tony.
Did you like it? I hope you had a great time and
that you have some takeaways from this episode.
But before you go, I want to askyou one thing and that is to
share this episode or this entire podcast with a friend,
(49:53):
family member, or acquaintance. Because remember, when you have
something good, you need to talkabout it.
You need to share it and you need to shout it from the
rooftops. So go on and let people know in
your life that you have this wonderful podcast that you would
like to share with them. I appreciate you.
I appreciate your time, your support, and everything else in
between. And remember, if you do it, I
(50:15):
have to talk about it. Have a great week.
