Tom Anderson (00:00):
This is a dork party.
The more, the merrier, and justlike that we're back.
It is a new episode of Basic AF.
Tom and Jeff back at it again.
Jeff West coasting it again.

Jeff Battersby (00:20):
Here I am on the West coast in another Dahmer
basement, the brother of JeffreyDahmer it's a family tradition,
it seems it really is.
And the bodies underneath theconcrete are in a family
tradition.
Actually, truth be told, thisis legit.
So sad story.

(00:42):
My niece is one of her bunnieshad to be euthanized.
This week.

Tom Anderson (00:47):
I know we're starting off on a solid moment.

Jeff Battersby (00:50):
Yeah, yeah, welcome.
Welcome to the Basic AF show.
But we were going through, like, how many animals are buried in
the back yard?
This is like dude, somearchaeologist is going to come
here and think it was a cemetery, or or the family home is going
to be writing a new novel.

(01:11):
Yeah, this is that I moved here,I think about when I was five.
It was shortly after my nextbrother was born.
My parents had a house acrossthe back fence.
They were renting a houseacross the back fence and Mr
Hugley I think that was theguy's name sold us, sold my
parents this house and sold me atree in the back yard for $1.

(01:33):
So I owned a tree, kind ofsweet.
Yeah, gave me a little deedwritten on a piece of paper.
It was pretty cool.
But yeah, I've lived here.
I'd lived here for a you know, until I left home Nice.
This is, this is the place.
This basement didn't exist atthat time.
Right, you know, jeffrey Dahmerhas to.

Tom Anderson (01:54):
And you said that your brother studio now.
Is that right?

Jeff Battersby (01:57):
It is my brother studio so he does, you know,
some voiceover stuff here andsome music and stuff like that.

Tom Anderson (02:02):
Nice.

Jeff Battersby (02:03):
He was kind enough to share, share his space
with me, and here I am.
It's actually pretty cool.
You know, he's got a bunch ofmusic stuff around.
It's way more decorated than ismy spot at home, which I have
to change.
Yeah, well up, surrounded byclothes.

Tom Anderson (02:21):
So it's better than that.

Jeff Battersby (02:25):
Cool, and that dress looks great on you.
You're looking so hot.

Tom Anderson (02:29):
Doll up for you a little bit I appreciate it.
Real quick.
You know we're on the shorterformat.
We did the last show came in atabout 30 minutes care for take
and we did get some goodfeedback on that.
And so yeah, we were excitedabout that.
We felt like that show turnedout pretty well and I think a
few people did get in touch withthis and they like the shorter

(02:50):
format, so we're going to stickwith that.
I think it helps us stay morelocked in, more on focus.

Jeff Battersby (02:56):
Yeah, I struggle with that anyway.
So anything to help is good.
Yeah, we got some.
We got an email this weekactually about the subscription
stuff which and actually thecost of subscriptions going up.
So thank you to a Mr Abe Frenesfor sending us a little note.
We appreciate that.

(03:17):
So there's your, there's your.
Shout out, pal.
Send us another, we'll do itagain yeah pretend that you like
us and we'll pretend that welike you back, right yeah?

Tom Anderson (03:27):
Easy peasy.
So also, as we released thatshow a couple of weeks ago, that
was the same day that Apple hadscheduled their scary fast
events.
So they did have that event.
Nice, I thought the event was.
It was kind of cool.
It was a different take forthem with the Halloween theming
and the dark backgrounds andsome of the effects and things.
They had strictly a Mac event, which everyone kind of expected.

(03:50):
But we did get the M3 chip andthree and three, three flavors
and three flavors, and threeflavors, yeah, and the M3 Macs
on the MacBook Pros.
Which thing?

Jeff Battersby (04:05):
I.
You know I'm not in the marketat the moment, although I'm back
in the Bay Area.

Tom Anderson (04:10):
So we can run that stuff for the 5000.

Jeff Battersby (04:16):
But I like it, I .
What's pretty interesting isthese computers are getting so
juicy.
Now for the average person youknow, like Joe me, who sits here
and types words and sits doinga podcast, it's, it's a lot of
bang.
It's a lot of bang for the buck.
So I like them all.
I'm not in the market for anyof them, so there's nothing

(04:37):
about it that gets me that way.
The one complaint that a lot ofpeople have had is go for it,
tom.
What is it?

Tom Anderson (04:45):
8 gigs of RAM on the entry model.

Jeff Battersby (04:48):
Feels like we've had 8 gigs of RAM for a long
time.
Yeah, and you know Apple's lineis which I'm not going to argue
with this honestly is that 8gigs of Ram with that Ram on
board the main chip, like 16gigs, they say, of regular RAM.

(05:08):
I know there's a lot that youcan wrangle about.
You know you can get a $200.

Tom Anderson (05:14):
You'd like me to do that a little bit, or are we
going to try to stay positivetoday?

Jeff Battersby (05:18):
No, no.
What would the show be withoutyou Bitching little bits?

Tom Anderson (05:22):
Well, no, I was going to say so when we started
testing the MacBook Air as itworked, the first model we got
was an 8G model.
No, I'm sorry, that's incorrect.
It was the M1, 13 inch MacBookPro.
It was an 8G model and for whatI do, it really was fine.
So I don't think, performancewise, if you know like us and

(05:44):
you're gonna just do emails, webbrowsing, things like that, I
think yeah, okay.
I think the biggest issue Ihave with it really is this is a
$1,500 laptop.
That the entry level model is.
So I think MacBook Air startingat 8G, mac Mini starting at 8G,
especially the Mac Mini, because that comes in around 500

(06:06):
bucks.
I think that makes sense, but a$1,500 laptop, it seems cheap,
right.
So it's 8G and the real kickeris so today all I'm doing is
browsing and doing some emailsor whatever, but say, six months
from now, I decided to start aYouTube channel and I wanna do
some video, because I've always.

(06:28):
Oh, I like this stuff.
Now I can't upgrade the RAM.

Jeff Battersby (06:33):
Right, right, and that is problematic.
You gotta think ahead.

Tom Anderson (06:37):
Right, and a lot of times, though, you don't know
what you don't know and it'slike, okay, well, jeez, now I
guess I'll get another laptop.
It's not that the 8G laptopcouldn't do it it could.
Now, if you're and kind of theasterisk there for all of it is
the people that need more than8G know they need more than 8G

(06:58):
and they'll get 16 or 32 orwhatever it is, but they do have
to pay extra to get it, whichgoes back to that.
If this is a pro laptop at$1,500, 16g seems like it should
be the starting point.

Jeff Battersby (07:09):
Yeah, I don't disagree with you and I can tell
you, my rule of thumb on buyingany of these things for the
last many, many years is double, whatever the base model is.
That's the way that I've playedthe game.

Tom Anderson (07:24):
So but I would say it does.

Jeff Battersby (07:27):
And if they started with 16 gigs, I wouldn't
be, I wouldn't double that, that's the notion and they know
that.

Tom Anderson (07:33):
Yes, they do, don't they?
They've got very smart peoplethere.
Marketing cats got smarts orthe money making people have
smarts Firehands offices isdialed in at Apple.
No question about that.
Yeah, they know the deal.

Jeff Battersby (07:50):
So, but that has been.
It has been a complaint aboutApple computers since Long time.
The first little Mac showed upin a little bag that you plopped
on your desk and stuck a coupleof discounts into you know that
not new.

Tom Anderson (08:07):
So we have a new color space black.
Yeah, I haven't seen it.
Have you Not in person?
No, I've only seen pictures.
It's not black, it's darkergray.
And one thing they did mentionwas that they've got a new
coating that should reduce thefingerprints, because I think
that's a big complaint with themidnight MacBook Air is it seems

(08:27):
to accumulate fingerprintsquite a bit, which I think still
is a nice color.
I've seen that one and it looksnice, so I'm sure this looks
good too.
Yeah, sure it's great, I alwaysbuy silver, just because I just
buy silver right.

Jeff Battersby (08:41):
If I were getting something new then I
might get the.
You might get that one.
I kind of like that color yeah.

Tom Anderson (08:50):
Imax got updated as well.
They did To the chips.
No design changes on those, sostill 24 inch display, 4.5K.

Jeff Battersby (08:59):
Which those are great computers.
One of my client has one ofthose and first of all she loves
it.
You know she thinks it's thebest thing going.
She said next time she wouldget a purple one.
She got she refers to it asgreeny she got a green one.
She loves the green one, shereally does.
But when she gets, when she'sin the market for a new one,

(09:19):
it's gonna be purple.
But yeah, and I like the colorscheme on those, I gotta say,
unlike the iPhones.

Tom Anderson (09:24):
I like to see that come down to the MacBook Air.
I'd like to see some differentcolors for that.

Jeff Battersby (09:29):
That would be kind of fun right.
I agree that would be.
That would be kind of a slickplay.
If they did that, I think you'dsee a lot of people that would.
That would buy those.
And, by the way, macbook Airstill, I think, a killer buyer.
I was talking with my aunt anduncle yesterday and they're
running, I think, a 2013 MacBookPro and they're asking me what

(09:53):
they should get to replace that, because it's kind of running,
the battery's gone and toreplace it's a couple hundred
bucks but the computer can'teven be updated.
And they were surprised atfirst that I said MacBook Air is
like no, I think this is.

Tom Anderson (10:07):
Yeah, they're so nice.
Really are Love the one I havefrom work, and I think I told
you the other day, if I werebuying now, I wouldn't get the
16 inch Pro, I'd just get maybethe 13 inch MacBook Air or maybe
the 15.
I haven't seen the 15 in personyet, but the 13 is great.

Jeff Battersby (10:24):
I did just see one of those.
Another one of my clients gotone and it's great computer.
It's really nicely sized andstill kind of lightweight,
Mm-hmm.

Tom Anderson (10:34):
But, jeff, an important thing.
Yes, we need to pour one outfor the touch bar.

Jeff Battersby (10:39):
The final touch bar model has been retired the
13 inch.

Tom Anderson (10:43):
MacBook Pro with M2 did not get upgraded, and
that was the last one with thetouch bar?

Jeff Battersby (10:49):
I don't know that anybody's gonna miss that.
I think it was a fun idea totry, but I don't think the value
at was.

Tom Anderson (10:56):
Yeah, and people kind of you know, rip on Apple a
little bit for notexperimenting more, and then
they do things and people rip onthat.
So it's like you know I'm surethey don't mind that I think the
best thing I saw on that touchbar was.

Jeff Battersby (11:09):
I'm sorry, go ahead.
I just interrupted for thefirst thousandth time in this
podcast.
I think the best thing that Iever saw with the touch pad was
somebody made it so you couldplay Doom on the touch pad
itself.
So Doom was running on thetouch pad, so that was kind of
fun.

Tom Anderson (11:25):
Yeah.
Yeah, I mean it was aninteresting idea, but where it
was placed you?

Jeff Battersby (11:28):
know, no one's looking at that right.

Tom Anderson (11:30):
You're always looking at the display and I
don't know.
I'm a little surprised theyactually released it, because it
was kind of wacky.
Like when you saw it at firstyou're like, wow, that looks
cool, but the practicality of itjust wasn't there enough to do
anything with it.

Jeff Battersby (11:43):
That was kind of handy for scrubbing through
YouTube videos and things likethat.
But yeah, that's pretty muchthat and photos in your photo
library, Right?
Maybe music if you were doingsomething.
You can sing through that,Right?

Tom Anderson (11:52):
right, yeah, so there we go.
That's the event pretty much.
It was 30 minutes shot oniPhone, which had some people
worked up.
Of course, everything Workseverybody up these days.
Gotta have something to postabout on YouTube and social
media.

Jeff Battersby (12:05):
But Right, and the funny thing about that, by
the way, is people complainingthat they were using lighting
and that they were using dollies.
It's like you don't say whatkind of crack are you guys
smoking?
Have you ever seen what happenswhen people film stuff?

Tom Anderson (12:20):
Right, they did use the $10,000 camera.
Guess what they just still had.
Those same things, Exactlyright.

Jeff Battersby (12:27):
And I think the point is and this is pretty
amazing really is that theiPhone, because they're able to
shoot directly to disk.
You know, they can shootdirectly to an SSD.
This is pretty a lot of bangfor your buck for being able to

(12:47):
use that phone as a camera.
And you know, I'll say that oneof the things that was
surprising to me and this is 10,maybe 15 years ago that people
were starting to use SLRs,digital SLRs, as professional
film cameras.
This is kind of the nextiteration of that.
This is a phone that can pullthat kind of stuff off.

(13:09):
So you know, your average guywho can't afford a red camera,
you know one of those.
I don't know what those thingscost now $10,000 or something
like that.
You know you can use an iPhonePro Max and once you have the
right lighting, you can shootjust like the pros do.

(13:30):
I mean, come on, stevenSoderbergh's been shooting on
the iPhone for a long time, youknow, not in a gimmicky fashion
and they were doing some funstuff.
They were using wheelchairs andSoderbergh was using
wheelchairs and stuff like that,as Dolly used to move the
camera.
It's something you know.
I think it's.
It puts a lot in the hands ofsomeone that's willing to do

(13:52):
that kind of work and it's gonnatake lighting, no matter what.

Tom Anderson (13:55):
Yeah, and a lot of indie people have used iPhones
for several years with thefilmic app and things, so I
think it's just, you know, keepsgetting better and better.

Jeff Battersby (14:03):
but it's Agreed, so the complainer's gonna
complain, but it's prettyimpressive.

Tom Anderson (14:09):
Yeah, that's how we do podcasts as we complain.

Jeff Battersby (14:12):
Well, right.

Tom Anderson (14:12):
I'm here for that.
You're getting well yeah youalways offer.

Jeff Battersby (14:18):
By the way, I just want to point out that the
lighting in my studio is way thehell better than yours is right
now.

Tom Anderson (14:23):
Look at this dude.

Jeff Battersby (14:23):
I just I just want my face looks.

Tom Anderson (14:26):
Well, yeah, yeah, I'm in the closet man, it's yeah
, lights right in my face.

Jeff Battersby (14:33):
That's a whole nother story Keeps me awake.
We can get around that.
I'm in San Francisco.
We can work that out for.

Tom Anderson (14:39):
Well, we'll come up with a special episode, We'll
travel there together and therumors will really fly All right
.
So the event all wrapped up, Ithink short suite to the point
it was, and so I think upgradewise if you are on an Intel Mac.
Oh, no question yeah whenyou're ready and want to do it,

(14:59):
you're up in for a treat.
I think you got a lot ofoptions all the way down the
line now yeah.
If you're on an M1, yeah, probably not M2, definitely not
Again, unless you're in thatreally high but small percent of
folks who need to eke everylast bit of performance out.
Or you need to do reviews onYouTube.

(15:21):
Yes, you can get that, butotherwise I think you're good.

Jeff Battersby (15:26):
Agreed.
Okay.
So, like Tom, we're under thenext step.
Let's do it.
So this is a mostly techpodcast, and we've got some
exciting news today.
Well, tom has some excitingnews.
I have a pile of pictures notright in front of me this second
, but I have a pile of picturesthat Tom just sent me of the new
gym you set up in your garage.

(15:48):
So you've moved from the closetto the garage where on our way
out the front door.
That's a good thing, but it'sit's a Really amazing set up.
You've been wanting to do ahome gym for a while, and so I
want to have you tell us alittle bit about the kit you put
together, what you did, how you, you know, set everything up,
but I'm telling you I would comework out at your gym time.

Tom Anderson (16:10):
Would you're welcome anytime?
Good, that means six hours away, but anytime you want to come,
yeah.

Jeff Battersby (16:18):
Right, yeah, right now it's definitely six
hours by plane away, right, um?
So tell us?
So tell us a little bit aboutKind of the, the design, the
dream, what it is that you did, what kind of kit you got for
that?
Very slick, very colorful, Iwant to say very old Apple color
.
It is, yes, it's yeah, tell usa tell us a little bit about it.

Tom Anderson (16:40):
Yeah, so the I, I have been Pretty much regularly
going to the gym since I was inmy mid-20s.

Jeff Battersby (16:49):
Doesn't necessarily look like it.
I'm not a big dude.
You look hot now.

Tom Anderson (16:52):
Well, it's just for you.
But um.
He did.
I think the desk fell apart orsomething.
I like that.
Sorry for trip here, but I likethat ace Oakland ace thing back
there behind you on the oh yeah, it's at a door or window or
wall, I don't know what that is,but no, that's it, that is the

(17:13):
wall.

Jeff Battersby (17:13):
Okay, so it's old, old ace, when ace were
still kind of in the Bay area.
They are, but and then, anyway, yeah, ace dubs Raiders once
upon a time, yep.

Tom Anderson (17:26):
Okay.
So anyway, back back to thestory.
You've been going to the gymfor over 20 years and and you
know, it's never been a socialthing like for some people.
The gym is like their socialhour and they go, oh and they
you know they spend three hoursthere and they talk to a lot of
people.
And I never really have donethat, even in my 20s.
I didn't do that.
I just kind of went in, did mything and left and you know, if

(17:48):
there were some people therethat maybe I worked with or knew
from other places, you knowquick hello or whatever.
But so I've always done that.
And then of course, during thepandemic a lot of the places had
to close down Temporarily andthen when they reopened they had
some restrictions in place andthings like that.
But when they shut down therewas a mad scramble from for

(18:10):
people Looking to equip theirhomes with something to work out
with.

Jeff Battersby (18:16):
Mm-hmm.

Tom Anderson (18:17):
And so I kind of started this.
Then, like I picked up Anadjustable bench, I got some
adjustable dumbbells and theneventually one of those airbikes
, and so that was kind of thestart of it for me.
And then, you know, when thethe pandemic restrictions kind
of eased up and everything and Istarted to go back to the gym,
I found, after having worked outat home and never having to

(18:40):
wait for a piece of equipment toopen up, I Really didn't have
the patience for that anymore, because when you just expect
that you don't it's alwaysannoying, especially, like when
the person sitting there ontheir phone or their jaw jacking
you can always tell when it'sjaw day at the gym and
everybody's just talking.

(19:00):
But so I was like, and the placethat I went to here in town is
very nice facility, it's ownedby the local hospital and it's
actually Partially a medicalfacility, so they've got these
Standards they have to meet forcleanliness and everything.
So it was always top-notch andthey always had, you know,
housekeeping staff.
They're cleaning, taking towelsaround, wiping down things.

(19:22):
So it was always super clean, which I always liked, because
not all gyms are like that.
Some are kind of dingy, butthat Annoyance factor of waiting
because the the freeway sectionthere was relatively small.
They're like four benches, onesquat rack and a couple power
racks.
But and of course, withCrossFit and its popularity and

(19:43):
like free weights are Quitepopular now and so those were
always in use and so what shouldtake 40 minutes would take an
hour and 15, or you had to subout the exercises and you know
ain't the end of the world, butit's you know it's a nuisance,
but for the old man who doesn'twant anybody under lawn, I don't
like to leave the house.

(20:06):
So you know, our house was builtin the late 90s and when the
the original owner had it built,he had a two-car garage and
then he had like a 12 by 12Additional kind of section in
the back of it.
As you pull into the garage, that was his workshop, okay, and
so we traditionally have justused that as a storage space,

(20:28):
and so we'd have shelving alongthe walls and I had the riding
mower in there and everything.
And so you know, a lot ofpeople, though, that that go to
the gym are always like man it'dbe nice to have a suite set up
at home and then I don't have togo.
The kids can jump in if theywant to and maybe start using it
as well, and so Looked at it.

(20:48):
We had some conversations herein the house and the wife was
all for it.
She was like you've alwayswanted to do it, you should just
do it.
So step one I think that reallyhelped kick it off is there was
a new storage facility thatopened up just to street up the
street from us, and so we wereable to run a storage unit.

Jeff Battersby (21:05):
An American tradition, by the way.

Tom Anderson (21:06):
Exactly.
Yeah, never throw anything away, just pay for storage to hold
junk Because I got cash to burn.
I really don't, right, right.
I was hoping, though, that insix to 12 months I'll get tired
of paying the storage fee andthat'll be like the incentive to
get rid of all that junk andthen get out of the storage.
Get a dumpster fee, right, butanyhow.

(21:29):
So it's literally up the street, which was kind of like the key
thing, because I didn't want tohave to drive 15 minutes to the
storage place.
I could drive 15 minutes to thegym and say what's the point?
So we got all the stuff out, cleaned it up, touched up the
walls and everything, and sowhile I was kind of doing that,
I started researching what Imight want, and this is where

(21:49):
the tech part kind of comes intothe story.
To stay on narrative, here, butyeah.
And so you know, you kind of,like I said, I picked up the
bench, I picked up the dumbbellsand it was kind of in our
living room at this point andthe air bike was in our office.
I think it's going to stayinside.
I just don't have enough roombecause the space is basically

(22:10):
12 by 12, but part of it isstill going to be functional
garage space, just like a wireshelving unit and everything.
So I'm probably in a 12 by ninespace maybe.
So what I did is I would didmost of this on the iPad and so
I would wait when, you see, didmost of it on the iPad, what do

(22:31):
you mean?
So the design kind of you know, sketching that out, the
research so there are a ton ofvideos on YouTube that people do
for their home gyms, garagegyms, basements, whatever the
case may be, and so I startedlooking at those, and so what I
did is generally I would just doit at the end of the day you
know it was propped up in bedright before bedtime and would

(22:54):
watch some YouTube videos.
I set up a note in the bear app, which is my notes app, and I
like it because you know it hassketch capabilities.
You can add links to it.
I mean it's pretty much likeApple Notes, it's just not Apple
Notes.
It's easier to get your notesout if you decide to move on,
and I think it looks nicer.
But so what I do is I wouldwatch the videos, anything that

(23:18):
was of interest, I would justhit the share extension, drop it
into the bear note.
I kind of had an idea of whichvendor I wanted to use.
There are a couple of primaryvendor.
I mean there are a ton ofvendors, but the three.
There are some big ones likeRogue Fitness is one of the top
ones.
Rep Fitness is another.
Prx has come on the scene oflate.
They're big, on the wallmounted racks that actually fold

(23:42):
down.
So when you're done you juststick it back up on the wall.

Jeff Battersby (23:45):
Oh cool.

Tom Anderson (23:46):
Which is pretty nice because, remember, this is
still somewhat of a functionalgarage space.
So I ended up going with theRogue Fitness setup.
So I had bought the adjustablebench from a few years ago and
it's super heavy duty.
It's a little pricey but it's.
I've learned as I was lookingat this.

(24:08):
There's a saying buy once, cryonce.

Jeff Battersby (24:15):
So instead of buying cheap.

Tom Anderson (24:16):
A couple of times you just suck it up and pay for
it, but it's.
You know, the rack I got wasthe Rogue.
You're like this, like a PCname or something.
Rml 3W fold back wall mountrack.
I was like, holy crap, it'sthree by three 11 gauge steel,

(24:36):
so it's heavy.
Yeah, it's pretty solid.

Jeff Battersby (24:38):
Look at these pictures.
Yeah, it's, I can see it'sanother and bolted to the wall.

Tom Anderson (24:43):
Yep, yeah.
So we, I got the Stringer kits, which are 59 inches wide, 10
inches tall, and so basically, they want you to hit this thing
on four studs in the wall, andso that's what we did.
Now the bottom part of ourgarage is block wall and so, if

(25:03):
you can see it in the picture, there we've got some half inch
plywood, because the drywallportion of the wall set out
about a half inch over the block.
So we put the plywood down therefor the second stringer and the
hammer drill to drill into that, and that that was the longest
part was just getting thosethings on the wall, and then the
rest of it was just, you know,a lot of cranking on ratchets

(25:26):
and stuff to get the bolts inand all that stuff.

Jeff Battersby (25:30):
Good thing you were working out before that.

Tom Anderson (25:31):
Yeah yeah, I was tired last night, and so what I
did, though, is I would go, andyou know so I'd watch these
different videos, look at somearticles, go to the websites,
and so I had a numberspreadsheet that I would put,
kind of, went through and justlisted everything I wanted, so
that would be the rack, the bar,the different weights, any

(25:56):
attachments that I thought Imight need that go on the racks.
I got, like, a bar holder.
You can see in the picturethere, that bar is hanging kind
of perpendicular there, and thenthat was just for budgeting
purposes, and so what was nicethat was I was testing stage
manager for a good bar, part ofthat, and that actually worked
pretty well because I could haveSafari open and then the notes

(26:19):
or not the notes, sorry thenumbers spreadsheet open.
Kind of off on the side thereand I just and I had it kind of
in like an iPhone size windowright, so it was the real small
third screen or whatever thirdof a screen, and then I could
kind of plug my numbers in thereas I was going through, I'd put
links in there.
Maybe some notes say, okay, this is probably phase one.

(26:40):
Phase two, because I've alsolearned that a garage gym is
never really finished.
So I've got other things I needto get, but that's not until
next year sometime, and so thatall worked pretty well too.
But what I really liked wasusing the grid note paper and
bear and I think notes has.
That too is it's pretty easy, once you have your measurement,

(27:02):
to kind of get things to somesort of a scale using those that
grid paper, right, so it's justlike you're sketching it out on
physical paper, and so what wasreally nice about having it
digitally is you can make yourfirst sketch of the space and
then just duplicate it, and thenyou can have five, six, seven,
eight, move things around, andso I did all that, that just

(27:22):
kind of, you know, foolingaround with the positioning of
the pieces that I wanted to get.
So Black Friday is kind of theopportunity to save a bunch of
money on these things for anyonewho's considering this?

Jeff Battersby (27:36):
And Rogue actually does have a full list.
Was it the real Black Friday orone of the Black Fridays that
they have now in August?

Tom Anderson (27:42):
Well, that's what I wasn't sure about.
And so people were saying Rogueusually does like a matte,
black, november, like the wholemonth.
And I was like, okay, the wholemonth.
And so they did, and so I wentahead and pulled the trigger on
the stuff that I wanted to getAll got here before the space
was really ready and so I hadall these boxes in the garage

(28:04):
stacked up.
I had junk everywhere.
I had to paint the walls.
We went to one of the localfarm stores and bought Stalmats
that's what's on the floor.
So, like the horse stall mats.
No, that's great.
Yeah, a hundred pounds piece, four by six, three quarter inch.
Again another tip from YouTube, because they're like 50 bucks a

(28:25):
piece versus like the regulargym rubber floor, which can be
quite a bit more expensive.

Jeff Battersby (28:31):
Nice, it's good play by somebody yeah.

Tom Anderson (28:34):
Tried to save some bucks there.
I did end up getting Everythingshipped for five bucks through
the Matt Black November sale.

Jeff Battersby (28:43):
Considering how many, how many pounds of stuff
was this 455?

Tom Anderson (28:48):
Yeah, okay, for five bucks, not bad right
because, yeah, I went back andlooked at some of my old
receipts and, like that benchthat I got I think was the bench
the shipping on that was like150 bucks, yeah, so whoa.
And I did say shipping killer, yeah, and I saved $160 on the
components Mm-hmm as well, sothat that worked out pretty well

(29:08):
.
I had bought the weights backin I want to say it was in late
September because they had afree shipping thing on the Wait.
So I got the bumper plates justbecause I wanted the color,
just to spruce it up a littlebit, because the right, which is
nice by the way it looks.

Jeff Battersby (29:19):
It looks really slick.
I like and like all of those.

Tom Anderson (29:22):
Yeah, thanks, yeah , I'm really happy with how it
turned out.
I did find on Etsy a Guy whowas actually up in Pennsylvania.
He uses his 3d printer andmakes receptacle covers that go
on your duplex receptacle, buton the top he's built a little

(29:42):
stand for a home pod mini.
Yeah, yeah, you showed me those, yep, and there's a space it's
thick enough up on the top whereyou can tuck the cable in the
charges, the home pod mini.
So I'm gonna.
I've got a couple of Apple giftcards that I got for my
birthday and father's day thatI've held on to Just for this,
and so I'm waiting to see ifthose go on sale with Apple,
maybe save a few bucks here in acouple weeks.

Jeff Battersby (30:03):
But can they get some colored home pods?

Tom Anderson (30:05):
Yeah, I think I might do the orange ones.

Jeff Battersby (30:07):
Okay, cool, that's good fit for there.

Tom Anderson (30:09):
Yeah, and so I'll have my tunes there with with
Airplay, of course.

Jeff Battersby (30:16):
If that works.
But well, yeah.

Tom Anderson (30:19):
Workout motivation when you get raged out on the
airplay not working.
And so that should be prettygood.
They also have the temperaturething, so I can say, okay, it's
only 42 degrees in the garage, but the door to the house is
right there, so it gets too cold.
I can do my set and come backin running.

Jeff Battersby (30:38):
Yeah, you know.
You know it's a get a littlespace heater for in there too,
right?

Tom Anderson (30:42):
Yeah, and in the summer we'll see, because it
gets Fairly warm there.
But I think if I open thewindow in the garage door and
just have a fan to pull some ofthat heat out, it probably be
okay.
So I'm not in there that long.
It's maybe, you know, 45minutes or so.

Jeff Battersby (30:57):
Yeah, rather than the hour and a half to two
hours in the gym.

Tom Anderson (31:01):
Yeah, but that's between the travel time and you
walk in, you get started, youwash your hands, you go to the
restroom, you know, you wait acouple minutes for the thing to
open up that you need to get to.
So just that convenience.
Yeah, I'm really excited aboutthat.

Jeff Battersby (31:16):
Yeah, and I'm gonna say again, and we're
coming up near our little30-minute moment, but this looks
as professional as as anythingI've seen.
It's a really slick setup.
The, the rogue kit that you got, the, the actual, you know, I
don't know what you call a thing, but because I'm not a wait

(31:36):
dude and I'm gonna go hike inthe backyard dude, but the it
really it's as good as you wouldexpect to find in any gym
anywhere.

Tom Anderson (31:48):
You know, I don't think yeah, so they're big
crossfit Company so a lot of theCrossFit boxes have have the
rogue stuff in it.

Jeff Battersby (31:58):
Yeah, I'm telling you, it's a.
It's a really slick setup,great color scheme.
You know, in terms of the, theactual weights that you got, you
know they're green, black,yellow, blue I don't know what's
on the other side, but you've,you've got a really nice.
I think there's a white onethere too.
It really is.
Yeah, the neighbor is gonna becoming over asking if they can

(32:20):
use your gym.

Tom Anderson (32:21):
Is, I think, what's gonna happen please do
Kiss some use out of this thing?

Jeff Battersby (32:28):
Yeah, it really is, and your wife's gonna use
this too.

Tom Anderson (32:31):
I think so.
Yeah, both the kids have.
I've already said they want tojump in on it and and that
that's one of my objectives withit is to kind of get them Into
the, into the lifting scene.
I think it has a lot ofbenefits, you know, for health
and mental health.
Sure, and you know this.
I mean any type of activitydoesn't have to be weights, but

(32:51):
any type of activity, typicallymentally, you're always feel
better after you know that's.

Jeff Battersby (32:57):
That's why I play soccer every Sunday.

Tom Anderson (32:59):
Yeah, and and I think you know the mental aspect
of you know, just Going anddoing it, even if you don't want
to do it Some days, the daysyou don't want to do it or that
end up being the best workoutyou have, and so that just I'm
hoping to Spend some more timewith them and Because, like my,

(33:19):
my youngest, he's 12.
He's like, does it have apull-up bar?
I want to learn to do pull-ups.
And Because he's got a school,he's done a couple but he's
really into it and my teenagersinto it, says he is.
We'll see what he does.

Jeff Battersby (33:34):
And I'm a you know, I bet you'll see, you're
gonna see those kids friends, your kids friends, coming over
100% guarantee you, when youknow, when they find out that
they came, you know they can bepumping iron, yeah, and and.

Tom Anderson (33:49):
I hope I get the chance to, you know, hang out
with all them and kind of, youknow, teach them the proper way
to do it and, yeah, the form andforms for the movements and and
all that kind of stuff, becauseit's a good.
I mean, it's a lifelong thingand that, if, if you stick with
it, just pays huge dividends.
So that's, yeah, one of mygoals is to kind of do that

(34:10):
positive modeling for them andhopefully they'll jump in.

Jeff Battersby (34:15):
Yeah, no, I love what you did with this.
It's really it's great lookingand I'm really happy for you.
Thank you, I know you've beenexcited about this for a while.

Tom Anderson (34:26):
You've been shooting pictures and ideas.
Probably wearing people out.

Jeff Battersby (34:33):
No, no, it's been fun for me to see it's been
low key.
Tom suddenly excited about this.

Tom Anderson (34:42):
Yeah, I should probably go ahead and get that
appointment on the chiropractorschedule I did.

Jeff Battersby (34:47):

Jeff Battersby (35:31):
This is a different kind of tech, and we
are mostly tech podcast, andthere'll be more tech coming for
it.

Tom Anderson (35:37):
I maybe do some smart lights, some automations,
Like if I can get a smart heaterright, Say hey, I'm going to
work out a 630.

Jeff Battersby (35:43):
A smart heater.

Tom Anderson (35:45):
They have those.
They do, yeah, do they, and soyou can set up your automation
so that when you get home andkicks it on 30 minutes later
you're ready to go.
I don't know.
And workout tracking maybethat's the thing too, because I
do that in Bear as well.
So yeah, cool stuff.

(36:41):

tunes.

Tom Anderson (36:45):
We should have him on sometime talk about how he
makes music.
Oh, absolutely, I think that'dbe a great idea yeah he would.

Jeff Battersby (36:51):
He, I think he'd love to talk about it.
So I'm down here and he's beendoing a lot of music lately and
a lot of stuff.
