This week on Bay Rats & Buoys, Captain Gaige is back on the boat, just three weeks away from the one-year anniversary of the podcast! After days of relentless winds stirring up the Sound, the seas finally laid down and shifted direction just in time for this recording. That break in the weather set the stage for a raw, on-the-water episode filled with fishing talk, salty banter, and plenty of laughs.
The week kicked off with a surprise appearance from Manny—better known around here as “Manny from the West" who knows best. True to his reputation, Manny rolled down the dock armed with a bag of warm bagels, hot coffee, and a case of slim Diet Cokes, fueling up the captain for what would be a wet and wild run into some snotty conditions.
Despite the sloppy seas, the energy is high on deck. Gaige dives into stories about chasing fish when the weather breaks, how wind shifts affect bait movement, and what conditions mean for the fall migration patterns we’re seeing in the Sound. With water temps cooling and the season pushing deeper into September, listeners get an insider’s view into how a seasoned charter captain adjusts strategy when the elements turn.
Another guest this week is Chef Rob, who made the trip all the way up from South Carolina to spend time on the boat with Captain Gaige. While the early morning weather kept us closer to home and with a limited fishing window due to Chef Rob's departure time we still made the most of this trip! Between the laughs, the videos, and the photo's of smaller species made larger than life, the stories flowed freely all morning.
Whether you’re here for the fishing talk, the boating lifestyle, or just the salty laughs, Episode 49 has it all. Strap in, crack open a cold one (or a slim Diet Coke if you’re riding with the Captain), and join us for another ride out into the Sound with Bay Rats & Buoys.

Cardiac Cowboys
The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
