Speaker 1 (00:02):
All right, folks, I
am back with another great
podcast.
This is Dennis Guzik with theBe the Ultimate Podcast, where I
take my experience in theMarine Corps and the corporate
world and use that to teach yousomething that will make your
career better.
So it's all good.
(00:22):
So when I was stationed atMarine Barracks, washington,
also known as 8th and I it's theoldest post of the Corps and
the land that it's on wasselected by President Jefferson,
so that makes it pretty oldright On this post there's an
officer's called the CenterHouse, and now I am on the Board
(00:53):
of Advisors for a nonprofitthat supports the Center House,
the Center House Association.
Anyway, we were there with theofficers of the mess and we had
a presentation by LieutenantGeneral United States Marine
Corps retired and his focus ison discipline and how important
it is to achieving a mission, and he also showed a video of
Coach Nick Saban like him or not, I know there's a lot of
(01:15):
feelings about that but thatechoed what the general was
presenting and that is what Iwant to chat about today.
So Coach Saban presented histhoughts on how to achieve a
very effective organization, andthere's no doubt that he's done
that during his coaching career, right, great college football
(01:35):
programs wherever he went.
Lieutenant General Farnese'spoint was that this applies to
any organization.
So what did Coach Saban say?
Right?
Basically, to make thissuccessful organization, there
were three things that werenecessary.
The first, okay, is a visionfor what that organization wants
(01:58):
to achieve, what it wants to be.
Without some sort of goal, it'simpossible to give anything to
achieve anything, because youdon't know what you're aiming to
do.
You're kind of operating in thedark, not real good, right?
Okay, so the first part is havea vision.
The second part that the coachsees as necessary is to have a
(02:19):
process that will allow you toachieve that goal.
Having a goal is necessary, butnot sufficient.
Right, the leader and theorganization needs to have a
process that will achieve thevision.
It's kind of a map that arefollowed from where you are
today to where you want to be inthe future, which your vision.
Okay, so we got a vision and wegot a process.
(02:43):
That's all you need, right?
Nope, the last part of whatCoach Saban presented was the
need for discipline, and by thishe means the discipline to
execute the process that leadsto the vision.
It's easy to design a processthat leads to a successful
outcome.
The hard part is following thatprocess.
Take dieting, for example.
(03:03):
It's easy to say I want to lose10 pounds the vision and it's
easy to design a program thatwill lead to that weight loss
the process.
The hard part comes fromfollowing that diet, and I think
anybody can relate to that.
So now, as usual, the oldjarhead will translate some of
this to your career things thatare going to help you.
(03:26):
First, for your career, you needto have that vision.
You need to think about whatyou want in your career.
For example, you may want tobecome a CEO someday or a
professional ice skater.
Maybe you want to own your ownplumbing business or become a
firefighter.
You need to decide on thatvision or goal and then think
about the steps you need to taketo get there.
(03:48):
Maybe you need an advanceddegree or maybe you need to
apprentice in your chosen trade.
Maybe you need to put in that10,000 hours of practice in your
sport or on a musicalinstrument.
You need to lay that out, preferably on a timeline, and
you need to make sure that theprocess you develop will lead
you to your vision.
(04:09):
And some good news on the sideI'm working on a webinar to
teach planning.
But that's for the future, solook for it, it'll be great.
Okay, then comes the hard part.
You need the discipline to staywith that process.
Right, you made your plan.
Now you need the discipline tostay with that process.
The process may change, right?
(04:30):
Your plan may change with life, but don't worry about it.
At least you got something tochange off of.
You're not just rambling around.
One other tip if you want tostick with your plan in other
words, have discipline then tellother people about your goal
and your plans.
Studies have shown that you'remuch more likely to stay on your
(04:52):
process and achieve yourresults whether it's a diet or
getting an MBA if you've toldothers about your plan.
Okay, that was today's podcast, but I'll leave you with this.
The technique that I just wentthrough applies to anything you
want in life.
Think about that.
Pretty powerful stuff.
(05:13):
Well, enough rambling from theold jarhead.
Have a vision, develop a planand stick with that plan.
Have that discipline to stickwith it.
That's the message.
Thanks for listening and bye, thank you, thank you.
