Youth, passion, and rodeo excellence take center stage as we welcome Carson, an eighth-grade competitor who's quickly making a name for himself in junior rodeo. Fresh off an impressive showing at the Wildfire competition where he secured buckles in both Steer Dobbin and Breakaway, Carson shares the journey that's brought him to this point.

The chemistry between Carson and his trusted horse Pistol forms the cornerstone of his competitive success. Their partnership—built through countless hours of practice and mutual understanding—has yielded multiple victories and no less than three second-place finishes at recent events. With disarming honesty, Carson walks us through his pre-competition routine, from trailer packing to horse preparation, while offering a glimpse into how he manages the inevitable nerves that come before entering the box.

Family emerges as the foundation of Carson's rodeo pursuits. His father serves as both life coach and technical instructor, while sister Logan partners with him in team events. As he prepares to balance eighth-grade academics with his ambitious rodeo schedule, Carson offers wisdom beyond his years about time management challenges and his goals for the upcoming season. Whether discussing his professional inspirations or sharing fishing tales from ponds and ocean piers, Carson's genuine enthusiasm for both competition and camaraderie shines through. For parents and young riders alike, this conversation provides valuable insights into nurturing passion while navigating the practical demands of youth athletics.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
I saw a picture with some saddle pads.
Yeah, three of them, I thinkyeah.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
All the second place saddle pads.
I got them.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
You had the second place locked down.
Huh yeah, so you rodeo with alot of your friends and family
yeah um.
I know most of them and youkids are a lot of fun.
Do you have any really funnymemories from a any specific
thing?
No, no, I mean not necessarilyanything like specific, it's
just hanging out yeah, avery wastalking about the time she fell

(02:42):
off and landed in the dirt.
I don't remember that, or not?
Avery Logan?
Yeah, I've been called herAvery all day.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, I do remember that that was funny.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Yeah, she just got up and shook it off.
Yeah, yeah.
So when you're getting readyfor a rodeo on the weekend or a
show or something, what do youdo to prepare?

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Just make sure everything's organized.
Get everything loaded in thetrailer.
Give your horse a a bath.
Get everything ready to go.
Make sure you've got everythingbefore you take off yeah, and
do you ride every day?

Speaker 1 (03:13):
and not every day I tried to ride so your horses are
pretty well in shape and readyto roll anytime you grab them
yep, nice.
Um, I guess your parentsprobably help a lot too, right?
Oh yeah, yeah, is your dad apretty big inspiration for you.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Yeah, yeah, for sure he helped me rope a lot.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Yeah, so do you.
I remember the.
I went with your grandpaactually to Louisville.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Yeah, I think it was this state fair or something.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
But we rode in Freedom Hall Okay, and that was
like the biggest place I've everbeen in.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah, I remember being super nervous.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Do you ever get nervous before any of these?

Speaker 2 (03:55):
events.
Yeah, right, when you're backin the box.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Yeah, how do you handle your nerves for that?

Speaker 2 (04:01):
It's just trying not to think about it.
Just go do it.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Yep, yeah.
Well, you put in a lot ofpractice too, though, don't you,
yeah, try to, yeah, just musclememory, who would you consider
your coach?

Speaker 2 (04:16):
my dad, yeah, riding and roping everything yeah, he's
.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
He's my life coach yeah kind of I do ask for advice
every now and again.
Yeah, what else do you do tokeep your horses healthy and
happy and ready to grab them andgo?

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Keep them well fed, keep them in shape.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
You got a good farrier.
Oh yeah, who's your farrier?
My?

Speaker 2 (04:38):
dad, of course.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
You're going to be in eighth grade.
You go to New Hope.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
What's the hardest part about going to school?
I mean, you've been off allsummer but now that you're back
in the school routine andweekend rodeos.
What's the hardest part aboutthat?

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Just being able to ride.
It's like you know you get homeand you got all your stuff to
do and then if you have sparetime then you can go ride and go
rope, but it's just having timeto do all of it, yeah, and time
management is tricky, yeah, andit's just going to get worse.
Oh yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
So practice that now.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
And get good at it.
No scrolling on Facebook.
Do you have a Facebook?

Speaker 2 (05:21):
No.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Good, do you have a professional rodeo hero?

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Yes, junior, I guess you could say I watch him a lot,
do you, junior, and josephharrison?
Yeah, as I watch a lot on theinternet youtube yeah, um.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
So you and pistol, you guys are pretty tight yeah
is that a bond you've built, just being around him so much
and riding and getting to knowhim, or how do you?

Speaker 2 (05:49):
yeah, riding him a bunch figuring him out.
I guess he figured me out.
You could say over time.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
Yeah, if you could.
I was talking to Logan about it.
There's some kids out therethat are probably thinking about
you know they may ride a littlebut not necessarily compete or
do the rodeo.
Do you have any advice for anyof kids listening of of how to
get started or what, what to do?

Speaker 2 (06:14):
I get if you're wanting to rope.
I just think you just got torope the dummy a lot and just
riding as much as you can, learning to ride, yeah, and it's
pretty hard to put those twothings together at first yeah,
it's like trying to pat yourhead and rub your belly.
It's like multitasking.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Yeah, you got any big goals this season.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Well, I'm hoping to make it to both finals the
Little Bridges and Junior Highand then hopefully win something
there.
I think the biggest goal isjust qualify for both those
finals.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Yeah, when are finals for those, do you know?

Speaker 2 (06:50):
July.
It's like end of June, start ofJuly.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Oh, so next, next year?
Yeah, next summer.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Yeah, there's already been finals this year.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
So hopefully we'll be sitting down with you this time
next year talking abouteverything you won.
Yeah, that would be awesome.
That would be cool, get, getanother buckle.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
oh yeah, saddle yeah, that'd be awesome.
A trailer I heard you can win atrailer, murray.
Oh really yeah, and murray, they're doing the all-around
gets a horse trailer that'sawesome.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
That'd make mom and dad happy.
Probably, yeah, probably, morethan a buckle yeah, for sure so
if you could, um, if you couldgive pistol a superpower, what
would you give him?
You can wave a magic wand.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
I don't know, maybe be able to run harder and stop
harder, I mean.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
You know what I would give him?
I would give him the ability totalk.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Oh yeah, that'd be cool.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
So when he comes in here I can say what's wrong,
pistol, yeah and he can tell me.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
That would be cool.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Save us a lot of sweat.
Oh yeah, yeah, so you're also afisherman.
Oh yeah, you're also afisherman.
Oh yeah, You've been fishingmuch this summer.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Not as much this summer as what I have been.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
What do you mainly fish for?

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Just bass in the pond .

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Yeah, worms, yeah, like the plastic worms.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
Yeah, that's my favorite, that's what works the
best in there.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
They're pretty simple fish yeah.
Do you ever fish in the ocean?
I guess I've done it once, likeoff the bank.
I went to this resort and theyhad fishing rods you could rent.
I just went and like fished offthe bank, caught those little
like snapper things or whateverthey're called.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Catching stingrays.
No, I fished from the beach atGulf Shores and that's all I
caught was stingrays.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Or some type of rays, I don't know.
I didn't get close enough, Ijust let them go.
Yeah, I did fish at the pier atGulf Shores or some type of
rays, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
I didn't get close enough, I just let them go.
Yeah, I like the ocean.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
I did fish at the pier at Gulf Shores.
If you ever go down there, that's fun.
Yeah, mainly Spanish mackerel.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Mm-hmm.

Speaker 1 (08:48):
But there's so many sharks.
If you don't reel the fish infast enough, you'll just reel up
a fish head.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
Yeah, I've seen that.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
And they used a thing called these bubble rigs, which
was like a plastic bobber, andthen you had about three foot
behind it with a treble hook.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
And you know those like neon things that hold your
sunglasses on.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
You cut those and just put that over the treble
hook.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Really.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
Yeah, and you just kind of fish it like a topwater
bait, yeah, but when the sharkssee it land, they just go up
behind it and follow it.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Wait for something to take it, yeah, and then they'll
try to get it.
That's smart.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
Yeah, there's some big sharks down there yeah.
We went there the first day ofvacation and walked out on the
pier and I was like, okay, I'mnot getting in the ocean.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
We went snorkeling in the Keys over a reef and there
was a lot of nurse sharks and acouple reef sharks.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
But those don't bite you right.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
No, they won't get you.
They just lay on the bottom, yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
Just any jellyfish.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yeah, yeah.
On the way out we came througha big old school of them.
I guess I don't know what Abunch on top of the water.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Call it not getting in the water.
Yeah, but all right.
Well, you probably better goget ready for school.
Yeah, have you shopped?
Got all your back-to-schoolclothes?

Speaker 2 (10:05):
No, I mean, we got a little bit, but not much.
