This is my wife, joe hi we'retalking about the sutras today
again.

In the past last episode, or some of our past
episodes we started to touch onthe yoga sutras, and the yoga
sutras are a guidebook that hasfour parts.
The first part is what is yoga?
The second part is the practice.

The third part is the benefitsyou get from the first yoga

sutra of the first book AttaYoga Nushasana, atta Yoga,
nushasana, atta Yoga,anushasanam.
When you have the word yoga andAnushasanam, they become one

I am not a scholar in Sanskrit,though I have learned to read
some of it and speak some of it.
This is interpreted through me.
So please, my friends, be kindand be gentle with my
pronunciation.

Well, let's dive in.
Sometimes, ata is simply statedas meaning now.
Now you are going to learn, orI'm going to share the
exposition of yoga.
Anushasanam means expositionsystem, yoga means yoga, atta

means now.

Cool, you know, it's just Joe's offering here is.
You know, again, she's not theSanskrit scholar.
What we want to do is like amore poetic version of what we
want to put it out there for you, but then we're going to go
deeper into the meaning of it.
So we're not so concerned aboutthe, the, the words or anything

like that.
What we are concerned about islaying out there, and one thing
to note is that oftentimes therecan be certain different
meanings or interpretations.
Right, so, atah, right, it'slike presenting it softly.
It's like, okay, now is timefor yoga.
Another way interpretation.

Attas has probably 10 definitions in Sanskrit.
That's in the West.
What happens is we take thingsand boil them down so much that
there's no color, there's notexture there's no depth.
Yes, there's no meaning.

(03:32):
I want to share what I feel isa beautiful way of feeling Atah,
and it's the present moment.
Ata means right now, right here, is a gift to be present to

(03:55):
what is to follow.
It is also seen as beingauspicious.
Ata is auspicious.
Auspicious means in favor ofyou.
It means conducive with success.
So ata is an auspicious word,which means this is for you to

(04:21):
be successful.
This is conducive with who youare and it's in favor of you
this that I am sharing with you.
This exposition, this disciplineof yoga, of the way the mind

(04:41):
and the body communicate andbecome one.
This is in favor of you.
This is conducive for yoursuccess in thriving and living a
life that you are consciouslycreating.
Another way of saying that isthis it signifies a beginning.

(05:11):
Atah in the Vedic traditionsignifies a beginning and a
commitment to that beginning, nomatter what Commitment to that
beginning, no matter what.
It's a decision to initiatesomething important and to
ensure that it is complete atany cost, without distraction

(05:38):
and without deviation.
Do you hear that?
Atha yoga anushasanam?
Now I'm going to commit to thispractice initiate the beginning
and stay with it, withoutdistractions removing me from my

(06:00):
path and without deviating fromit, without changing it and
making things up.
That's a lot more powerful tome than now.
Now I'm going to tell you allabout yoga.

To me.
One thing that also comes tomind is that there's no rush,
there's no urgency.
It's almost like any time, anytime now, any time.
Now is a good time for yoga.
Now is a good time for yoga Anytime, without rushing, there's
no urgency.
It's when you're ready that nowis a good time.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Yeah, there is no urgency, there is no rush.
Now, in this moment and thatmoment and whatever moment, you
have this blessing A-N-U.
A-n-u means particle atom,oneness.

(07:04):
If we break down the words, anumeans one, the system of yoga
becoming one.
What I also have taken out ofthis Yoga Sutra is looking at it
as that.
This is a system.
Do not be distracted by shinyobjects like loud music or

(07:30):
choreography in a yoga class.
That is too creative.
That takes you out of thepurpose of breathing and focus.
Do not add dancing andmeditation In the yoga path.
If we're being pure, thosethings good, bad.

(07:52):
I'm not saying that.
I'm saying according to theyoga sutras, there's no mention
about a playlist.

We've looked right, dan.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
We searched all week last week in the sutras to try
to find where it stated thatmusic was a good.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Playlist was essential to this.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
And what happens is when, when we add things that we
like or we want or some of myTTs say, well, I added it
because it's fun.
And I said well, yoga's not fun.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Okay, I'm not that bad, y'all.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
No, it actually is fun, but not in the way that
people need.
In a surface way it's it's notfun like an ice cream cone.
It's actually deeper and richerand more fun and more enjoyable
on the other side.
Yes, it it, but it does taketime, it does take commitment.

(09:03):
You know some of the thingsthat we've accomplished that
just go under the radar screen.
I mean, for one thing, forexample, it's like when you get
to know yourself, when you movefunctionally, when you deeply
listen in your asana practice,deeply inward, when you're, when
you practice.
For me, what I found is the nextthing I know is I don't I

(09:24):
eliminate something dietarily.
I mean, we live in a householdwhere there's not an ibuprofen,
there's not an Aleve, there'snot an aspirin, there's not a
Tylenol, and it's not a thing.
It's just me and Joe.

(09:45):
We don't necessitate us to havea Tylenol and, again, like Joe
said, I don't have a judgmentabout somebody that needs a
Tylenol for a headache.
But I can assure you that themore you tune in to yourself
with these rituals, the lessthat you even consider something

(10:12):
beyond all of the tools thatare right in front of you.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Yes, the less you'll consider other things than the
tools in front of you.
If either of us get a headacheor our body hurts, we go to the
tools Atah, stretching water,rest.
Every moment you have anopportunity to yug yoga, yug

(10:43):
union, to yoke two things.
Now, in this moment, you canbecome one.
Take the mind and drop it intothe heart and fully be present.
The practice of yoga is torealize your potential.

(11:04):
Now, realize your potential andrealize that the system of yoga
that's being offered it's asystem.
It is a set of discipline,rules and practices to ensure
self-realization and living ayogic lifestyle.
And a yogic lifestyle doesn'tmean you're better than anyone.

(11:28):
By the way, yoga or being yogicI'm not even a fan of that word
yogic because I'm not trying tocreate a division between
people it's just an explanationof I live a yogic lifestyle,
meaning I take the practices andI use them throughout the day,

(11:49):
and when I don't, I remember Ididn't use them and I go back.

Speaker 1 (11:54):
And that becomes your barometer.
That becomes your measure ofhow good of a day you're having
or how well you're feeling.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
That becomes the measure well, you're feeling
that becomes the measure.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
Or how embodied.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
I am Right, how embodied I am.
If I'm continually gettingupset that someone parked in my
parking spot at work, thattrigger is the way in.
Do you understand, if I'm goingto work y'all and someone's in
my spot which has been happeninga lot and I'm outwardly getting

(12:30):
mad and thinking if theyweren't in my spot then life
would be great.
Oh, if they didn't do that thenI'd be okay, right then.
And there I take a breath, Idraw in and I say where in yoga
do I need to work more?
Where do I need to withdraw anddo the practices?

(12:54):
Is it with the yamas and theniyamas?
Is it breath work?
And these are part of the eightlimbs which we have discussed.
If you want to listen to inprior podcasts, the system,
anushasanam, the exposition, itis now that it is going to be

(13:14):
explained, exposed to you, andit is a science.
Yoga is a science.
It is not a religion.
It is not magical.
It feels magical if youscientifically follow the
prescribed practices.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
Yes, and remember, though, self-discovery in all
this is an explorative venture.
That requires you not to treatthis like a checklist.
I did this check, so this isthe feeling, the benefit I'm
supposed to get.
It must, it's a lifestyle.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
In the beginning it may be a checklist, because
perhaps in the beginning, right,okay, I have to do my
meditation, I have to do mypractice, because we need the
practices.
If we don't do them and wedon't keep track of them, then
they're not measurable.
Okay, now, after a while, if itis that mechanical, then we're

(14:17):
losing the essence of yoga,which is not the practice, but
using the practice to get toknow ourselves, to be able to
express ourselves and co-createwith what is here and universal
energy.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
And noticing when you check out and noticing when you
want to go do something youknow is harmful to yourself, and
noticing all those thingsbecome clearer the more you can
plug these in.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
What is rising in the moment is to share with you
this concept called the threeA's.
Years ago, I studied AnusaraYoga, for it feels like
lifetimes, probably 15 years.
I studied Anusara and the threeA's were something we learned

(15:15):
in the beginning that I want toshare with you.
And the first A is attitude.
Why am I feeling this issignificant now in the
discussion of the first YogaSutra?
Because the Yoga Sutra saysAtta Yoga Anu Shasanam.

(15:37):
Right Now, in favor of you, foryour success, I'm going to
explain expose these practicesof yoga.
And yoga is the mind-bodycommunicating, living as one,
becoming one.
But guess what really matters?
Your attitude.

(15:57):
Why are you doing this?
Why are you taking on yoga?
Why do you want it to beexposed to you?
Why do you want to learn thissystem piece by piece?
If you don't have a why and agood attitude towards it, your

(16:22):
willpower will fizzle out, thepractices will dissolve and you
will be left sitting therewondering what happened.
I thought I really wanted thisyour attitude approaching yoga.
And here's the offering in thismoment.
The offering in this moment Atameans you are about to begin

(16:51):
and initiate a powerful journeyin which you are committing to
finish it and stay on the pathwithout distraction and
deviation, my friends, are youwilling to do that?
And deviation, my friends, areyou willing to do that?
Mic drop?
I'm so curious because ourattitude towards that very thing

(17:12):
is how we do everything.
Do you understand that how youdo anything is how you do
everything?
So, atah, you have these yogasutras and you're saying
everything.
So, atah, you have these yogasutras and you're saying I'm
committing to yoga, I'm, andwhat does that even mean?
Do you know that?
That's attitude?
What is your attitude whenyou're committing to something?

(17:35):
Are you going to falter?
Are you going to stop it?
Are you going to say, oh, itdoesn't matter, I don't have
time?
How do you approach it?

Speaker 1 (17:48):
And even that is a journey toward a journey toward
the light, a journey inwardly.
So don't get Jill wrong, it'snot that one time you fall off
that you're not committed,because that also becomes a
measure of coming back Each timeyou come back.

(18:10):
Each time you come back, eachtime you come back, you learn
about yourself.
There are things that you musttend to.
There are probably things youwill have to eliminate.
There are probably people inyour life you will have to move
away from, to become moreharmonic, to become more at ease

(18:31):
with self, and there's alwaysthe consideration as much as
this is an inward journey andself-care and self-tools and all
the self stuff guess what thathappens to be the most universal
thing there is.
So when you're working onyourself, the greatest gift that
you're presenting to the worldis all of yourself.
With that work having beingdone, and guess what People like

(18:53):
you start to show up and cometogether with you that have a
similar ideas and beliefs andfeelings and journeys and
passions and things they want tosurround themselves with.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
I like to pause and go back to something you said.
It's not how many times youfall off or turn away from the
path, it's how many times youcome back.
And I have fallen, my friendsso far away from the past
numerous times in 30 years.
It is not about perfection, itis about returning, and I've

(19:37):
returned to the path, broken,confused irritated enraged,
disappointed repeatedly over andover again, and have been
broken open over and over again.
That's why I'm saying what isunder the reasoning for doing

(20:00):
this?
Because you will stop doing itat a point.
You will think it is not thatimportant, it will fall by the
wayside.
I promise you, it's happenedwith me.
My question, though, is whatwill keep you coming back?
What says to you hey Jodi, heyDan, hey Tom, hey, friends, what

(20:24):
about your practice?
What whispers to you to comeback home and to continue this?
Where's the attitude aroundthat?
Yeah, please, that wasbeautiful, dan.
It's not about perfection.

(20:46):
My journey is one ofdestruction and death and
darkness, and still returningwith all of that.
By the way, my path was full ofrage at a point, and I still
did yoga, rageful because I knewthere was more to this.

(21:07):
So please don't wait to startthe practice to feel better,
because I never really feltbetter doing yoga.
I became better at feeling andprocessing and or releasing, and
that's when I started to feelbetter feel better.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
Yes, and with the understanding and appreciation
that most people are probablylistening and like poking a hole
in the balloon and trying tosmash it down and it's really
just the resistance, but havingall these things go on in their
head.
Well, I'm of this religion andI'm of that religion and that's
exactly why I say come with anopen mind.
And I said in the prior episodeand I can't remember what I

(22:01):
called it now but if this wascalled moopy doopy, then moopy
doopy is what I'd be doing, so Idon't care what this is called.
There has been no otherexperience, no other offering in
my life that has come my way orpresented itself.
That said, here are some toolsto pursue and just see what

(22:22):
comes of it.
I have not experienced thatanywhere else.
So I want to once again honorand share appreciation with the
people who are listening andsaying well, this could go wrong
with that, and I know that Iwill already not do that and I
don't want to do that piece, butI would consider that piece.
Well, just come with an openmind.

(22:45):
You know, one of the reverendsthat we studied with was like he
gets that question and you putyou write it on a piece of paper
and you put it in the box andit goes up before him and he
says okay, he unfolds the pieceof paper.
How do we know that this is nota cult?
And he's gotten that question agazillion times right, and this
is how you know.
Because you don't have to comeback, you don't have to give

(23:08):
money, you don't have to doanything, do it for yourself and
see the world around youtransform.

Speaker 2 (23:21):
Do it and see the world around you transform.
Speaking on religion, itdoesn't matter the religion that
you follow, because yoga is ascience.
I remember reading Larry Dosseywrote a great book about the
soul and prayer and I wanted tostudy prayer, mainly for myself,

(23:45):
selfishly, and then, of course,for others later on.
And this concept of prayer as Iread more and more, he said,
just as we are saying, it is thepractice that changes you.
It is the devotion to therituals that change you, showing
up every day and saying I'mpraying for Dan or I'm wishing

(24:11):
this person well and I hope thatperson's well and may these
people receive what they'remeant to receive.
By doing that every day and bybeing grateful every day, we
change our neuropathways.
Our neurology changes and westart to now see goodness in
people.
See goodness in people.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
A shift in us happens from consistency and showing up
for the practices.
What a powerful thing justthere, right there, joe, is just
for people to hear that Sayokay, so my approach to people
how about, instead of lookingfor what differentiates, you,
look at what the beauty is inthe other person, look at what
brings you together, look at thegood in them, and that just

(25:00):
alone.
You know plugging that in thatapproach to when you stand in
line behind somebody at thecounter in the supermarket.
You know just approach thatwith okay, what if I'm looking
for the goodness in this person?

Speaker 2 (25:16):
Dan, that was a beautiful example of attitude,
of changing your attitudetowards the world.
That's the first A.
The second A is alignment, andit's not the physical alignment
that we're thinking of.
It is being in alignment andliving in alignment with the

(25:40):
knowledge, your speech, youractions, and we'll talk more
about that in the second YogaSutra.
So stay tuned, we're still on1.1.
I just was called to sprinkle inthe three A's and I will talk
more about them perhaps inanother episode.
But the second one is alignment, and alignment has to do with

(26:04):
knowledge, right knowledge,conscious knowledge, and getting
the knowledge you need to alignwith this new attitude.
Right, what is going to helpyou stay in alignment?
Then the last A I'll share istaking action.
Notice, action is last.

(26:26):
The first thing we usually dois I want to do and our
sensories take over and we react.
That's usually first ourhumanness In this, it's attitude
first.
Who is reacting?
What am I feeling?
What am I doing?
What's my attitude Then?
Do I have enough knowledge andam I aligned enough to take

(26:51):
right action or appropriateaction in accordance to what I
want to co-create?

So these three A's to me go with the starting of a
journey.
Yoga Sutra 1.1 says Atta Yoga,Nushasana Atta.
You are initiating a journey,learning and exposing the

practices of yoga.
The details are being opened toyou.
That's a gift as your journeystarts to unfold, the journey of
the mind and the body becomingone and living in unity together
.
The three A's work right inthere so well.

How can you change yourattitude, or what is your
attitude right now?
And then, do you have thealignment and the knowledge you
need to uphold that, to livethat Now, with that
steadfastness and that knowledgeand that open heart and mind,
what are your actions going tolook like?

It's not about being a betterperson.

I achieve to reach my fullestpotential and in that potential

I know that will change theworld.
So the Yoga Sutra is the firstsutra Atta.
Now, the present moment is agift and if you choose to embark
in this yogic journey, may youcheck in with your attitude

about that and may you gatherthe knowledge and the teacher,
if you need support to keep youon the path, to check in with
who has done this before you.
By the way, all of my teachershave done this before me for
years and years and years.
I'm going to say that again.
Find a teacher that has donethis before you Find a teacher

who has done this before you,who's followed the path for many
, many, many years consistently,and have them show you the way
or hold you accountable.
All my teachers have been doingthis for years and are my

(31:51):
elders, because I want what theyhave.
I want that peace, thatconsciousness, that love.
Yoga will change your life ifyou participate in it and if you
allow it.

The Yoga Sutras are aphorisms.
Aphorisms need to beinterpreted and chewed, chewing
on something.
The word is manana.
