Welcome to this bonus episode of Bede Vs. The Living Dead. Unlike the main episodes of the show that only focus on all things related and linked to Night Of The Living Dead, these bonus ones will have your host Bede Jermyn explore other random zombie films (from both the famous to the obscure) that were made in the aftermath of George A. Romero's 1968 classic masterpiece.
While zombie films were hugely popular in the 30 years after the release of the original Night Of The Living Dead, the sub-genre started to fade out with audiences once the '90s rolled around. As we see with horror time and again, it only takes one film to restart a sub-genre. For the zombie-genre, that was the 2002 British film 28 Days Later from Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and Oscar-nominated writer Alex Garland (Ex Machina).
Even though it has been debated whether it is an actual zombie or not, there's no denying that it, along with its 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later (directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo of Intacto fame), helped restart the sub-genre for cinemagoers. Now in honour of the release of the long-awaited third entry 28 Years Later in cinemas, your host Bede Jermyn thought it be a good opportunity revist the first two films in the series. Joining Bede to discuss them are returning guest Barton Roberts and first-time guests Jason Shawhan (co-host of Fearless Pretender: The Jennifer Jason Leigh Podcast) & Carmelita Valdez McKoy. Do both 28 Days Later & 28 Weeks Later still hold up? Listen to find out!
