(00:00):
Hey, everyone, welcomeback to Behind the Mic.
Today we are bustingsome of the biggest myths
about the Bible.
Things that people believebut they're not actually there.
Some of thesemight surprise you,
so stick around.
(00:21):
All right, miss number one.
It says God helpsthose who help themselves
in the Bible.
Now, this phrasesounds biblical,
but it's actually fromBenjamin Franklin.
The truth is, the Bible teachesthe exact opposite.
God helps thosewho realize they need him.
Psalm 46 one says,God is our refuge and strength,
(00:44):
a very present help in trouble.
Now, doesthat sound like we sit around
and do nothing?
Well, of course not.
But it does meanthat we're called to trust
God and rely on his strengthand not just our own abilities.
Myth number twothe forbidden fruit
was an apple.
The Bible never sayswhat kind of fruit it was.
(01:06):
Genesis three simply calls itthe fruit of the tree
of knowledge of good and evil.
The idea that it was an applelikely came from a Latin pun,
and the Latin word malumcan mean both apple and evil.
So when artists startedpainting the scene
in the Garden of Eden, they often used apples.
(01:28):
But biblically,it could have been
a fig, a pomegranate,or even something
we've never seen.
Myth number threethere were three wise
men at Jesus birth.
Now, we've all seenthose Christmas cards and
all kinds of decorations, with three wise men
bringing gifts to the babyJesus in the manger.
But Matthew twonever actually says
(01:49):
there were three wise men.
It just says, wise men from the east
brought three giftsgold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Another fun fact they didn'tshow up at the manger.
The wise men in Matthew 211it says
they found Jesus in a house.
And based on the timeline,it was probably
when he was a toddler.
(02:10):
At the time, long after his birth.
So while there couldhave been three,
the Bible doesn't say for sure.
Myth numberfour Satan rules hell.
Oh, Hollywood lovesthe idea of Satan
ruling over helllike some kind of evil king.
But the Bible tellsa different story.
Revelation 2010says Satan will be thrown
(02:35):
into the lake of fireand tormented forever.
That doesn'tsound like a throne to me.
Hell isn't his kingdom.
It's his future prison.
Right now the Bible saysSatan is roaming the earth
trying to deceive people.
That comes out of firstPeter five eight but one day
God will bring an endto his rule.
(02:57):
Myth number fivemoney is the root of all evil.
People love to quote this one,but they usually leave out
a key word or two.
First Timothy 610 actually says, the love of money is the root
of all kinds of evils.
Money itself is neutral.
(03:17):
It's a tool.
It's how we use itand what place
it has in our heartsthat matters.
Jesus talked a lot about moneybecause he knew that it could
easily become an idol for us.
The issue isn't wealth.
It's whether ourwealth controls us
instead of God.
(03:37):
Myth number sixJonah was swallowed by a whale.
Now, the Bible doesn'tactually say Jonah was swallowed
by a whale.
Jonah 117 calls it a great fish.
Now, could it have been a whale?
Maybe some largewhales can swallow things whole.
But the real miracleabout this story
isn't the type of creature.
(03:57):
It's the fact that Jonahsurvived inside for three days.
Jesus even referenced this eventas a sign
of his own resurrectionin Matthew 1240,
showing that it was about waymore than just a big fish.
Myth number seven.
Christians shouldn'tjudge others.
Well, this is one of the mostmisunderstood verses
(04:21):
when Jesus says, judgenot that you be not judged
in Matthew seven one.
He wasn't saying never to judge.
He was warning againsthypocritical judgment,
because in John 724,Jesus actually says, judge
with righteous judgment.
The Bible teaches that we shoulduse discernment and call out sin
(04:42):
when necessary,but always with love,
humility, and fairness.
Myth number eight.
Eve alone is to blamefor all of the fall.
Poor Eve.
She gets blamed for everything.
But did you know thatAdam was right there
when she ate the fruit?
Genesis three sixsays she gave some to
(05:04):
her husband, who was with her,and he ate it.
Unquote.
Even more interesting.
Romans 512 through 19 placesthe ultimate responsibility
on Adam.
He was, after all, the headof humanity,
and his sin affected all of us.
So it wasn't just Eve's mistake.
(05:25):
It was both of them.
Myth number nineNoah took only two
of every animal.
Now, most people think Noah tooktwo of every animal
onto the ark.
But that's only half true.
You see, Genesis 619 saystwo of every kind were brought.
But then Genesis seven twothrough three adds
(05:47):
another detail.
Noah also tookseven pairs of clean
animals and birds.
Why?
Well, likelybecause after the flood,
he would need themfor sacrifices.
Look up Genesis 820and probably food.
So while we imaginepairs of every animal
walking onto the ark.
(06:08):
Some of them actuallyhad much larger families.
And finally, myth numberten people become angels
when they die.
We've all heardheaven gained another angel.
But biblically, that's not how it works.
Angels and humansare separate creations.
Hebrews 114says, angels are ministering
(06:30):
spirits sent to servethose who inherit salvation.
So when believers die, theygo to be with the Lord.
Check out secondCorinthians five eight.
But they don't become angels.
Instead,they await the resurrection
when they'll receivenew glorified bodies.
Check that outin First Corinthians 1542
(06:51):
through 44.
While some of thesemight have surprised you,
the Bible is fullof incredible truth.
But over time, mythsand misunderstandings creep in.
That's why it's so importantto study scripture for yourself.
