Hey everyone, welcome back toBehind the Mike Podcast
(00:02):
as we continue walking throughPassion Week.
Let me ask you something.
What makes you angry?
For a lot of us, it'swhen something feels unfair,
when someone gets hurt, when justice is ignored.
But did you know thatJesus got angry too?
On Monday of Passion Week,Jesus walks into the temple.
(00:22):
He looks aroundand he flips the place
upside down. Why?
And what does that meanfor us today?
Well, let's dig in.
Matthew 21 (00:31):
12-13
tells us, And Jesus
entered the templeand drove out all who sold
and bought in the temple.
And he overturned the tablesof the moneychangers
and the seats of allwho sold pigeons.
And he said to them,it is written,
my house shall be calleda house of prayer.
But you make ita den of robbers.
(00:53):
Imagine this.
Jesus, the onewe think of as gentle and kind,
is flipping tablesand driving people out.
This wasn't a random outburst.
It was righteous,controlled anger.
So what made Jesus so angry?
Well, the people at turnGod's temple meant to be
a place of prayer and worshipinto a marketplace.
(01:16):
They were ripping people off, charging poor worshipers
outrageous prices to buy animalsfor sacrifice, and worse.
They were blocking the Gentiles, the non-Jews, from being able
to pray their.
Jesus saw people abusing worshipand hindering others
from encountering God,and he wouldn't stand for it.
(01:37):
The temple was God's house,a holy place where people met
with God.
They confess their sinsand they sought forgiveness.
But the religiousleaders allowed,
and they profited fromturning it into
a spiritual scam.
Instead of beinga light to the nations,
they were using God'sname for personal gain.
(02:00):
And when Jesus flips the tables,he quotes Isaiah and
Jeremiah, prophets who warnedabout corrupt religion.
Isaiah 56 (02:08):
7 says,
my house shall be
called a house of prayerfor all nations.
Jeremiah 7 (02:14):
11 says,
you have made it
a den of robbers.
Jesus anger wasn't about pride,it was about holiness.
He was about protectingGod's glory and people's.
He was aboutprotecting God's glory
and people's access to him.
Here's where it gets personal.
(02:35):
If Jesus walkedinto our churches,
our homes and our lives, what would he want to flip over?
Are there areas where we'veturned worship into routine?
Going through the motionsbut missing God's heart.
Are there ways we hinder peoplefrom coming to God?
Maybe our own hypocrisy,or our own judgment,
(02:56):
or our selfishness,or we're more focused on
what we can get fromGod instead of how
we can glorify him.
The truth is, we.
Are the temple now.
1 Corinthians 6 (03:07):
19 says,
do you not know that your bodies
are being king over it?
Who is in you?
Whom you've received from God.
So if Jesus is passionateabout keeping the temple
pure, he's passionateabout cleaning house
in our hearts to Palm Sundayshowed us a humble king,
(03:30):
but Monday reminds us that Jesusis also holy, zealous,
and unwilling to tolerate sin.
That separates us from God.
So here's my challenge to you.
Ask Jesus to show youif there are any tables
in your life that need flipping.
Anything that's keeping youfrom worshiping God fully,
(03:52):
or keeping othersfrom seeing him in you.
And remember, his angerwasn't to destroy,
it was to restore.
He wants to clear outwhat's broken.
So something bettercan take its place.
True worship.
Real connection with God.
Freedom in his presence.
(04:12):
