Ivelisse Page (00:06):
Hi, I'm Ivelisse Page, and thanks for listening
to the Believe Big podcast, theshow where we take deep dive
into your healing with healthexperts, integrative
practitioners, biblical faithleaders and cancer thrivers from
around the globe.

(00:34):
Welcome to today's episode onthe Believe Big podcast.
My name is Ivelisse Page andtoday's episode is all about a
therapy that has been aroundsince the 1970s, but one you
might not be familiar with.
It's called PEMF Therapy.
We live in a toxic world and thenatural mechanisms designed to
ensure ourselves health havebeen damaged, high stress

(00:57):
lifestyles, processed foods, chemicals, and cleaning products
and personal care productsbombard our cells and make it
difficult for them to performproperly.
We are surrounded by negativeelectronic magnetic fields from
sources like wifi, microwaves, cell phones, electronics.
Many of the aches and pains andillnesses we consider as a

(01:18):
normal part of aging are in factsigns of cell degeneration and
distress.
One of the biggest barriers to aperson's healing is good
cellular health.
My friend and guest today, Dr.
Derek Guillory will be helpingus learn more about this
incredible therapy.
Dr.
Guillory is the Founder andMedical Director of Root Causes

(01:39):
Medical Clinic in San Antonio,Texas.
He has a passion for functionalmedicine that was born out of
his own personal struggle withhealth concerns that began
before the age of 17.
He has an insatiable curiosityfor the question most often

asked by his patients (01:54):
why am I sick?
Dr.
Guillory became one of the firstcertified functional medicine
practitioners in Texas in 2015and has also been board
certified by the American Boardof Emergency Medicine since
2005.
Jimmy and I got the honor ofvisiting his medical center a
few months ago, and we were soimpressed with the wide range of

(02:16):
therapies that he offers for hispatients.
So welcome Dr.
Guillory to the show.

Dr. Derek Guillory (02:22):
Thank you so much.
Good to be here.

Ivelisse Page (02:23):
Let's start with your favorite health tip.
I know you have several, but canyou share one with us?

Dr. Derek Guillory (02:29):
It is really difficult actually to narrow it
down, but if I had a favorite itwould be this, people have
incredible power over their ownhealth.
If they will only understandthat there are only two causes
for all disease.
So it doesn't matter what thename of the disease is advanced
metastatic cancer or eczema.

(02:52):
When people understand thistruth, it really gives them
power to make baby steps, littledecisions every day.
So the two causes of all diseasedeficiency and toxicity.
Deficiency is that word thatdescribes everything your body
needs that it doesn't have, andtoxicity is everything your body
has that it doesn't need.
That's all I do all day in theassessment and treatment of

(03:15):
causes, which is figure out whatI need to replace and figure out
what I need to remove.
Day to day, minute to minute, hour to hour, people get to make
that decision.
What am I doing that I need tostop doing?
What memory do I need to getover?
Who do I need to forgive?
How can I forgive myself?
Those are toxic emotions, thetoxic memory, the toxic

(03:39):
relationship.
That doesn't mean you have toget rid of it, but fix it.
Get the toxicity out of yourrelationships.
What do I need to replace?
What's missing in my diet?
What's missing in myenvironment?
What's missing in my lifestyle, minute to minute?
That's my key tip.

Ivelisse Page (03:55):
I think that's the best explanation that I've
heard anyone say about the causeof disease.
And it makes such sense, what amI missing and what do I need to
get rid of?
That is exactly what you guys doat your center.

Dr. Derek Guillory (04:09):
That's true.
All day, every day.

Ivelisse Page (04:12):
So before we get into the PEMF would you mind
sharing, what was the personalstruggle that gave you the
curiosity for integrativemedicine?

Dr. Derek Guillory (04:21):
Oh, goodness, how much time do we
have?

Ivelisse Page (04:23):
The cliff note version!

Dr. Derek Guillory (04:24):
The cliff notes version is I was born with
irritable bowel syndrome.
And when I was 11, my dentistfilled my mouth up with silver
amalgam fillings.
And prophylactically, you canargue about whether that was a
good idea or not at the time butshortly thereafter, I developed
really bad irritable bowelsyndrome.

(04:45):
It got much worse.
So I had it from a young child, but then it got worse.
When I was a teenager Ideveloped seizures.
Those things were not reallyteased out by any of my
physicians.
I kept asking my doctors, why doI have this problem with my gut.
Why do I have this problem withmy brain?

(05:06):
And they just didn't haveanswers for me.
That's what set me on thisjourney.
And I have been obsessed andcompelled to ask the question
why in every case.
And I have to ask it until Ifind an answer that makes sense.
For people with cancer, why do Ihave cancer?
It's genetic disease, thatdoesn't make any sense.

(05:27):
There is an answer.
Often, there's almost never oneanswer.
There's almost always acombination of factors; both
genetic deficiency and toxicity, and environmental deficiency and
toxicity.
Those things add up in a personto contribute to their disease.
And so that's been my journey.

(05:48):
It's the reason why I'm adoctor, because I was so sick.
And now I can be thankful forthat whole trip.

Ivelisse Page (05:54):
I'm grateful because doctors like you give us
such hope to know that justbecause you have genetics, like
myself, there are things that wecan do to literally switch on
and switch off that tendency sothat we never get cancer as long
as we're looking to see how ourbody is doing.
So I really love that you sharedthat and that you do that.

Dr. Derek Guillory (06:14):
Thank you.
That's true.
Genetics is never working aloneto cause an outcome.
Genetics only predisposes to arisk, but we have incredible
power over our own expression ofour genetics.

And those are lifestyle factors: that's food, that's movement, (06:28):
undefined
that's detox.
And so all day every day workingwithin somebody's genetics,
using their environment.

Ivelisse Page (06:39):
Yes, people say well, Ivelisse, you had those
genetics and you got cancer.
Yes.
And know now what actuallycaused it and I have that MTHFR
gene, and I have a hard timedetoxing things out of my
system.
A year before I got sick, I hadto get nine immunizations within
a two month period for a missiontrip.
I went to Africa.

Dr. Derek Guillory (07:00):
Wow.

Ivelisse Page (07:00):
And I had a colonoscopy three years prior.
I've always been clean, not evena polyp.
After that my health started togo downhill.
It wasn't until years later thatI realized that is what
triggered it.
My body could not handle all theadjuvants that were in there
that put this toxic load on me.
You are absolutely right, there's so much to our system

(07:21):
that tries to weigh us down.
There are so many things thatyou do at your clinic to help
with that toxic load.
You have hyperbaric oxygenchambers, you do mistletoe
therapy, IV-C.
There's so many therapies thatpeople will just have to look on
your website to check.
Today we wanted to really focusin on PEMF.
Can you share with those who arelistening, what PEMF stands for?

Dr. Derek Guillory (07:44):
Sure, PEMF is pulsed electromagnetic field
therapy, and this has beenaround for a really long time.
There are a surprising number ofstudies that have been
published.
There's a good amount of data onpain.
Pain and fractures are probablythe two biggest things that
research has been published on.
But what it is using a magnet todeliver a signal to your body.

(08:09):
So my best analogy is the littlekey fobs that you have for your
cars.

Ivelisse Page (08:14):
Yes.

Dr. Derek Guillory (08:14):
When I go and I press that key fob, unlock
my door, it sends a message thatI can't see through the air, to
the computer in my car and itunlocks my door.
Now, if I have a Honda, itdoesn't unlock every Honda in
the parking lot.
It only unlocks mine and itdoesn't start the engine or
drain the tires air, it unlocksthe door.

(08:38):
So it's a specific signal that'sbeing sent that I can't see, but
we know it works.
Because we see the result, thecar door opens.
Same thing with pulsedelectromagnetic field.
So it's a electromagnetic signalthat's being sent to the cells
of our body.
Every cell in our body is alittle magnet.

(08:59):
It's a little frequency.
It's an electromagnetic energy.
Every cell is.
So this treatment is usinginformation that our body
understands.

Ivelisse Page (09:11):
Yes.

Dr. Derek Guillory (09:12):
And a bunch of different ways that we can
use it.
And I have several tools here, but that's a basic understanding
of what pulsed electromagneticfield therapy is.

Ivelisse Page (09:21):
I've also heard it's like a battery.
Sometimes your cells becometired and worn out, whether due
to age or stress or overuse.
Making it more difficult forthem to fight off damaging
illness.
Then the PEMF therapy, like yourbatteries, they essentially
helps your cells to recharge.
I love that, cuz I know I'm verysensitive to wifi.
And at the end of the day, afterbeing in front of the computer,

(09:43):
as much as I try and protectmyself, or if I'm around things
that overload my body, I go andlay on it and I feel recharged.
I have it on different levelsthat I have at home and it helps
me to restore and I feel relaxedand rejuvenated.
Is that what you typically findat your center when people use
it?

Dr. Derek Guillory (10:03):
So it depends on which technology I'm
using.
Cuz there are several differentelectromagnetic technologies
that I'll use.
When people are typicallytalking about PEMF, for cancer
they're talking about a highintensity magnetic field.
So I'll use that device for afew reasons.
One is for pain, so it's verygood at relieving pain.

(10:24):
Two is very good at supportingthe bone marrow.
So for patients this is wheremost of the research has been is
on activity in the bone.
So it increases bone activity, whether it's a fracture or it's
acute injury or it's bone marrowproduction.
So there is some data showingthat it helps with that.
Cancer patients already havesuppressed bone marrow from the

(10:45):
disease, and many of them willhave suppressed bone marrow
because of the treatment, whether it's chemotherapy or
some other treatment.
So pain, bone marrow support, and then energy.
So all of our cells have avoltage, which is a difference
in the level of electricityacross a membrane or across some
distance.
So when you use that magneticfield, you actually add energy

(11:09):
to the system.
There are some studies showingspecific anti-cancer benefit.
So the high intensity magnetsare providing a little bit of
cytotoxic effects for cancercells.
So it, destabilizes the spindlea little bit and sends a signal,
that key fob sends a little bitof a signal to the cancer cell.

(11:30):
Which I always summarize thesignal I want the cancer cell to
receive is, it's just time todie.
Just go ahead and die already.
Because the cancer cell isfollowing a set of instructions,
live forever.
And I need it to stop followingthat set of instructions.
And PEMF is one of the ways thatwe send that message.
Just go ahead and it's just timeto die.

Ivelisse Page (11:52):
How long does it typically take to see results
from PEMF therapy?

Dr. Derek Guillory (11:56):
So for cancer patients, they need to do
a lot of it.

Ivelisse Page (11:59):
What's considered a lot?

Dr. Derek Guillory (12:00):
Depends on the device you're using.
We'll do treatments for 10 to 20minutes per day.
Every day when patients are inthe office.
For some patients, they noticemore benefit with more so you
can do 30, 40 minutes.
Some of the studies are hours.
Most of those are cell linestudies, so we can't really
apply those.

(12:20):
But for pain, 10 minutes is veryeffective.

Ivelisse Page (12:24):
Yes.

Dr. Derek Guillory (12:24):
For bone marrow support, 10 minutes a day
is very effective.
If you're trying to getspecific, anti-cancer benefit is
probably a little bit longer andit just would depend on the
patient.
On average, it's about 10 to 15minutes that we're having
patients do per day.

Ivelisse Page (13:58):
I know you have the professional grade one at
your office when we went and sawit, it looked like this huge
futuristic, halo thing that thepatient sits under.
Share the story of theParkinson's patient that you
shared with Jimmy and I.

Dr. Derek Guillory (14:11):
That's a different device, which is a low
intensity electromagnetic field.
Those treatments are between 30minutes and 90 minutes.

Ivelisse Page (14:20):
Okay.

Dr. Derek Guillory (14:21):
That is a very specific tuned frequency
magnetic field that really helpscalm the sympathetic nervous
system down and elevate thefunction of the parasympathetic
system.
A common feature of chronicdisease is sympathetic overdrive
or what people call stress.

(14:41):
So stress is a common feature.
We want to calm that down andthe magnasphere is very
effective at just getting peopleto relax.
Many people will fall asleep.
They'll take a nap for an hourand wake up really refreshed.
It's also really good for a fewother conditions like
Parkinson's.
It can help minimize the tremoror some patients take it away.
People will walk in there with atremor and walk out without one

(15:04):
wow.
that last anywhere from two orthree days up to maybe a week.
And that's a specific frequencythat just helps calm down some
of those neurons in the brainthat are causing the tremor.

Ivelisse Page (15:16):
And what kind of technology is that?
What therapy did you call that?

Dr. Derek Guillory (15:19):
It's called magnasphere.

Ivelisse Page (15:21):
Magnasphere.
Okay.
And so PEMF is different thanthat.

Dr. Derek Guillory (15:25):
No, it is PEMF.

Ivelisse Page (15:27):
It's a form of it.

Dr. Derek Guillory (15:28):
There are different categories of PEMF.

Ivelisse Page (15:31):
Gotcha.

Dr. Derek Guillory (15:32):
So the pulse electromagnetic field is the
thing that's similar, but we'retalking about is the frequency
of the field and the amplitudeof the field.
This is the physics of it.
So how much energy and then howoften is the energy being given.

Ivelisse Page (15:50):
Okay.

Dr. Derek Guillory (15:50):
And those things are, it's much like that
key fob.
That's the reason I use thatexample because how many cars
are there in the parking lot atthe Spurs game or whatever
sports team?
75,000 cars, there's all thesedifferent signals we need to be
able to send.
And so the PEMF devices are ableto do that, some of them.

Ivelisse Page (16:11):
Are there any contraindications or individuals
that should not use them?

Dr. Derek Guillory (16:15):
Yes, the high intensity devices.
If you have an implant in yourbody with electronics in it.
So like a pacemaker, adefibrillator, a spinal
stimulator, a gastric stimulatoreven a, some of people have
implanted pumps.
So if it's got an electronicbrain in it, you can't get on

(16:35):
the high intensity PEMF devices.
If you have a heart condition,Some of those patients can be
extraordinarily sensitive.
Some neurologic conditionsactually are a little sensitive,
but it's very helpful for manyneurologic conditions.
So those have to be based on anindividual.
And then pregnant patients.
We don't have much data onanything for pregnancy, so we

(16:56):
have to be careful and justthink about it.

Ivelisse Page (16:59):
And what about kids?
Have you ever used them forkids?
Is it safe for kids?

Dr. Derek Guillory (17:04):
I have used it on school age kids.
I have not read any specificdata I've never needed to for
the younger kids, but it'sabsolutely safe for school age
kids and older.
For athletic injuries, it'samazing sometimes.

Ivelisse Page (17:17):
And what about pets?

Dr. Derek Guillory (17:18):
Oh, goodness, yes.
The PEMF devices, there's awhole industry built around that
for mainly for horses.
So they have these huge matsthey use for race horses.

Ivelisse Page (17:29):
Because it reduces the inflammation and
helps them recover.

Dr. Derek Guillory (17:32):
Athletic recovery, metabolic and
physiologic optimization.
Those horses are, big time, they'll do anything for those
horses.

Ivelisse Page (17:40):
Yes.
We'll do anything for our pets.
We love them and our hugefamily.

Dr. Derek Guillory (17:44):
Yeah, for pets, for sure.

Ivelisse Page (17:46):
For those individuals who wanted to look
into this for home use, arethere any that you recommend?
I have the higher dose one.
It's not anything like at yourfacility, but are there some
that you would recommend ifpeople wanted to check out to
have for home use if they're notclose to you?

Dr. Derek Guillory (18:02):
It depends on what they're trying to do.
There's one guy who's probablyspoken more about PEMF than
anybody else, his name's Dr.
Pawluk, P A W L U K.
Google Dr.
Pawluk and there are a wholebunch of devices, maybe hundreds
of devices.

Ivelisse Page (18:19):
Okay.
I've seen them and some of themare more specific for athletes,
others may be more specific forhorses.
The one I use is more forrelaxation and help with sleep
and inflammation.
Could it be for someone who hasParkinson's or has a issue with
that?

Dr. Derek Guillory (18:35):
There's not one I can recommend for
neurodegenerative diseasespecifically.
I would have to see that patientto make a decision about that.
Probably the most widely useddevices, the BEMER mat, B E M E
R, which is very safe, veryeffective for micro circulation
and it's good for sleep.
So that's probably the onethat's most widely used at home.

(18:58):
The BioMAT is another commonlyused one at home.
And I think it's a good productfor a lot of the people that are
using it.

Ivelisse Page (19:05):
That helps people have a good stepping stone to
start looking into what is outthere.
What is available for use.
So when people come into yourcenter, what do they most
experience, walk us throughthat.
What I love is you can just goright in your clothing and get
in.
So walk someone through whatthey would experience.

Dr. Derek Guillory (19:24):
For PEMF therapy, high intensity, you lay
on a mat or a sandwich between amat for 10 to 15 minutes.
Same thing with the BEMER mat.
For the magnasphere, you sit inthis comfortable recliner and
you just come right in.
We set the program and peoplewill be there for between 30
minutes up to 90 minutes, butthat's a long treatment.
And we rotate people aroundcause we have people doing all

(19:45):
sorts of things in our office.
They'll do an IV.
They'll do cryotherapy.
All these things work together, especially when you use them in
tandem, because I'm trying toget that signal sent to the
cancer cell to follow the rightset of instructions.
Cancer cells, they put blinderson the immune system cells and

(20:06):
they hide underneath thisinvisibility cloak.
So we'll use PEMF with red lighttherapy and cryotherapy and an
IV, so that we're getting threeor four messages.
Immune system, wake up! Cancercell, just go ahead and decide
to die.
So the big thing in our officeis using those treatments in

(20:27):
tandem.

Ivelisse Page (20:28):
It makes complete sense we trying to confuse the
cancer cell and cause it to die.
I know mistletoe therapy is oneof the huge things that is used
in order to combat that in anatural way.

Dr. Derek Guillory (20:39):
Mistletoe works so nicely with all of
these other therapies becausethe natural things working
together are so importantbecause they're working within
our own system to make ourbodies work the way they were
supposed to work.
So mistletoe works really nicelywith magnetic therapies as well.

Ivelisse Page (20:56):
I love hearing that.
We're about to close theepisode.
I can't believe how quickly timegoes by.
Is there anything that I haven'tasked you about PEMF that you
think would be important forsomeone to know that you'd like
to share?

Dr. Derek Guillory (21:07):
I think if they're not using PEMF in their
current plan, they shouldinvestigate.
It's not a one stop finish inone day.
It's an ongoing therapy.
And then also just to bethinking about that
electromagnetic toxicity.
People ask me the question allthe time.
We're always talking aboutreducing electromagnetic fields

(21:27):
and now you're giving me anextra one.
Why this doesn't make any sense.
So that is a really simpleexplanation.
We are surrounded by nonphysiologic, electromagnetic
fields, 24 hours a day, sevendays a week.
So our bodies are veryaccustomed to being exposed to
certain electromagnetic fieldsfor isolated time periods.

(21:51):
And they're good in short doses, but we want to minimize wifi,
cell phone towers, high voltagepower lines, all of these
things, those are bad, particularly the microwaves and
the smart meters from electriccompanies and all these things.
Those are bad, non-physiologicscattered magnetic fields.

(22:12):
You wanna avoid that?
You want to have an organizedphysiologic or biologic field.
And short doses of highintensity magnetic field are
okay, but it needs to happen toget some of the results.
Unless it's just for injury, then a few days is really good
for pain.

Ivelisse Page (22:29):
That makes sense.
And again, our body's constantlyneeding to be rebuilt depending
on the stresses and the thingsthat we're surrounded by as
you're saying.
It's one of the great thingsthat individuals can do Thank
you so much for joining ustoday.
I'm gonna have you back on, ifyou agree.
I would love for you to shareabout your oxygen chambers and
what you do in regards to cancerwith O2 therapy, if you'd be

(22:51):
willing.

Dr. Derek Guillory (22:52):
I'd love it.
Sure, anytime.

Ivelisse Page (22:54):
Thank you so much for joining us today and we'll
talk to you soon.

Dr. Derek Guillory (22:58):
Thank you, Ivelisse.
Appreciate you.
