Open your Bible to Numbers, chapter 10.
The title of today's lesson isthe Silver Trumpets.
As always, we will start withour reader, we will read the
chapter and then we will comeback and break the chapter down.
So open your Bible, numbers, chapter 10, and let's read.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Numbers 10.
The Lord said to Moses make twotrumpets of hammered silver and
use them for calling thecommunity together and for
having the camps set out.
When both are sounded, thewhole community is to assemble
before you at the entrance tothe tent of meeting.
If only one is sounded, theleaders, the heads of the clans
(01:16):
of Israel, are to assemblebefore you.
When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east
are to set out.
At the sounding of a secondblast, the camps on the south
are to set out.
The blast will be the signalfor setting out To gather the
assembly.
Blow the trumpets, but not withthe same signal.
(01:39):
The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets.
This is to be a lastingordinance for you and the
generations to come.
When you go into battle in yourown land against an enemy who
is oppressing, you, sound ablast on the trumpet.
Then you will be remembered bythe Lord, your God, and rescued
(01:59):
from your enemies.
Also, at your times ofrejoicing, your appointed feasts
and new moon festivals, you areto sound the trumpets over your
burnt offerings and fellowshipofferings, and they will be a
memorial for you.
Before your God, I am the Lord, your God.
(02:21):
On the twentieth day of thesecond month of the second year,
the cloud lifted from above thetabernacle of the testimony.
Then the Israelites set outfrom the desert of Sinai and
traveled from place to placeuntil the cloud came to rest in
the desert of Paran.
They set out this first time,at the Lord's command, through
(02:45):
Moses.
The divisions of the camp ofJudah went first, under their
standard Nashon, son ofAmminadab, was in command.
Nethanel, son of Zuar, was overthe division of the tribe of
Issachar, and Eliab, son ofHelan, was over the division of
the tribe of Zebulun.
Then the tabernacle was takendown and the Gershonites and
(03:07):
Merorites who carried it set out.
The divisions of the camp ofReuben went next, under their
standard Eliezer, son of Shadur, was in command.
Shalumiel, son of Zerushadai, was over the division of the
tribe of Simeon, and Eliasaph, son of Duel, was over the
division of the tribe of Simeon, and Eliasaph, son of Duel, was
over the division of the tribeof Gad.
(03:28):
Then the Kohathites set outcarrying the holy things.
The tabernacle was to be set upbefore they arrived.
The divisions of the camp ofEphraim went next, under their
standard Elishema, son of Amahud, was in command.
Gamaliel, son of Pedasur, wasover the division of the tribe
(03:49):
of Manasseh, and Abaddon, son ofGedionai, was over the division
of the tribe of Benjamin.
Finally, as the rear guard forall the units, the divisions of
the camp of Dan set out undertheir standard Ahazah, son of
Amishadai, was in command.
Padiel, son of Akran, was overthe division of the tribe of
(04:13):
Asher, and Ahira, son of Anan, was over the division of the
tribe of Naphtali.
This was the order of march forthe Israelite divisions as they
set out.
Now Moses said to Hobab of Reuel, the Midianite, moses's
(04:34):
father-in-law we are setting outfor the place about which the
Lord said I will give it to you, come with us and we will treat
you well, for the Lord haspromised good things to Israel.
(04:59):
He answered share with youwhatever good things the Lord
gives us.
So they set out from themountain of the Lord and
traveled for three days.
The ark of the covenant of theLord went before them during
those three days to find them aplace to rest.
The cloud of the Lord was overthem by day when they set out
(05:19):
from the camp.
Whenever the ark set out, mosessaid rise up, o Lord.
May your enemies be scattered.
May your foes flee before you.
Whenever it came to rest, hesaid return O Lord, to the
countless thousands of Israel.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
All right, welcome
back Now.
The last time we were togetherwe looked at the Passover and
the cloud over the tabernacle.
Today we are looking at thesilver trumpets and the tribes
leaving Sinai.
Okay now, the first 10 versesare focused on the silver
trumpets.
So part one is the instructionswas given by god concerning the
(06:06):
trumpets.
We see this in verses 1 through10.
The lord spoke further to moses, saying I want to pause right
there for a second.
The lord continues to speak tomoses and it starts out by
saying the lord spoke further, which is showing that he was
still speaking to Moses.
From chapter nine Look, go leftin your Bible, back to Numbers,
(06:30):
chapter nine, and look at verseone, numbers nine, verse one.
Thus, the Lord spoke to Mosesin the wilderness of Sinai in
the first month of the secondyear after they had come out of
the land of Egypt, saying nowlet the sons of Israel observe
the Passover at its appointedtime.
Now go back to chapter 10,verse 1.
(06:50):
The Lord spoke further to Moses, saying the reason I like to
point that out is that this is awhole continuation.
Now, as I have mentionedseveral times, we are blessed in
the times we've lived in thelast few hundred years to where
we have the Bible in chapter andverse format.
We have punctuations, we haveperiods and commas.
(07:13):
You know we have things thatseparates the word.
That you know makes it easierfor you and I to read and
understand.
But you have to understand thatback during this time that did
not exist.
So when Moses wrote this bookof Numbers it was written on a
scroll, so it was continual, soit really flowed different.
So, for an example, when thechildren of israel were re-going
(07:38):
, rereading the book of numbers, when they got to verse 23 of
chapter 9, they didn't stopright there, like I do and like
we do, and save chapter 10 foranother time.
It just kept on rolling.
Give you an example numberschapter 9, verse 23 at the
command of the lord they camped.
And at the command of the lordthey set out, they kept the
lord's charge according to thecommand of the lord, through
(08:00):
moses.
The lord spoke further to moses, saying so that's where we are
now.
So this is just a continuation,so we will pick it up at
chapter two.
Remember we look at the first 10verses, which focuses on the
silver trumpets.
The lord spoke further to mosessaying make yourselves two
(08:21):
trumpets of silver, of hammeredwork.
You shall make them and youshall use them for summoning the
congregation, for having campset out, and when both are blown
, all the congregations shallgather themselves to you at the
doorway of the tent of meeting.
Yet if only one is blown, thenthe leaders of the heads of the
divisions of israel shallassemble before you.
(08:42):
But when you blow an alarm, thecamps that are pitched on the
east side shall set out, andwhen you blow an alarm, the
second time, the camps that arepitched on the south side shall
set out.
An alarm is to be blown forthem to set out and pause right
there real quick.
It's kind of you know, like us,when, if you live in a state
(09:03):
where they have tornado sirens, you know when you generally hear
a tornado siren, you know thatit's giving you a certain
warning of what's going on.
Generally, when you hear unlessit's on a test day it's telling
you to take cover.
It's very similar to what'shappening here.
Different blowing of the trumpetis for different sections of
the people Verse 7,.
When covering the assembly, however, you shall blow without
(09:26):
sounding an alarm.
The priestly son of Aaron, moreover, shall blow the
trumpets, and this shall be foryou a potential statue
throughout your generations, something that Israel was to
continue to do.
And when you go to war in yourland against the adversary who
attacks you, then you shallsound an alarm with the trumpets
(09:46):
that you may be rememberedbefore the Lord, your God, to be
saved from your enemies.
The Lord is also saying that todo this command he has given
them and is also assigned to himverse 10 also, in the day of
your gladness and in yourappointed feasts and on the
first days of your months, youshall blow the trumpets over
your burnt offerings and overthe sacrifices of your peace
(10:08):
offerings, and they shall be asa reminder of you before your
god.
I am the lord, your god.
Now the second part of this.
We are looking at verses 11through 36, where we are looking
at the tribes leaving sinai.
So, starting at verse 11 now,it came about in a second year,
(10:33):
in the second month, on the 20thof the month, that the cloud
was lifted from over thetabernacle of the testimony and
the sons of Israel set out ontheir journey from the
wilderness of Sinai.
Then the cloud settled down inthe wilderness of Paran.
I'd like to pause right therefor a moment.
Now I'm looking at my map ofBible times and remember they
(10:57):
are in Mount Sinai.
They are at Mount Sinai Nowthey can remember the Lord
opened up the Red Sea.
They were in Egypt, which is inNorthern Africa, and then they
crossed over into this part ofthe world which is considered
the Middle East.
Now Mount Sinai is in the mostSouthern part of the Sin, which
is considered the middle east.
Now mount sinai is in the mostsouthern part of uh, the sinai
peninsula, which is where theyare now.
(11:18):
It says that the lord, uh thatthe cloud, moved up and it
settled in paren.
Now the wilderness of paren isnorth of there.
Now I tried to figure out themileage so I could kind of give
you the distance.
But to kind of give you an ideawhere uh they're going is a few
hundred miles uh to the west ofjordan.
Now they are still in the senaipeninsula, but they are.
(11:42):
They.
They have moved from south tonorth.
So it kind of gives you an ideaof, of where, of where they're
moving to.
We will continue on verse 13.
So they moved out for the firsttime according to the
commandment of the lord, throughmoses and the standard of the
camp of the sons of judah, according to their armies, set
out first with nishan, the sonof aminadab, over his army, and
(12:06):
daniel, the son of zuar, overthe tribal army of the sons of
isachar.
So we're going through all thetribes and Eliab, the son of
Helan, over the tribal army ofthe sons of Zebulun.
Then the tabernacle was takendown and the sons of Gershon and
the sons of Merorai, who werecarrying the tabernacle, set out
.
Remember how each tribe hadjobs to do.
(12:28):
So we see what the sons ofMerorai jobs were.
Verse 18.
Next, the standard of the campof Reuben, according to their
armies, set out with Eleazar, the son of Shador, over its
armies, and Shalumael, the sonof Zerushadai, over the tribal
army of the sons of Simeon, andEliasaph, the son of Duel, and
(12:51):
over the tribal armies of thesons of Gad.
Then the Kohathites set outcarrying the holy objects and
the tabernacle was set up beforetheir arrival.
Next, the standard of the campof the sons of Ephraim,
according to their armies, wasset out with Elisha ma, the son
of Emma, who, over its armies, and Gamaliel, the son of peters,
(13:13):
are over at our tribal army ofthe sons of Manasseh as, as I
keep mentioning, these are thetribes of Israel and how they
are setting out.
And Abaddon, the son ofGibeonai, over the tribal army
of the sons of Benjamin.
Then the standard of the camp ofthe sons of Dan, according to
(13:33):
their armies, which formed therear guard for all the camps,
meaning they're out rear set out, with Ahasuer, the son of
Amishadai, over its army, andPejael, the son of Akran, over
the tribal army of the sons ofAsher.
Each tribe has a leader over it.
(13:56):
And Ahara, the son of Enan, over the tribal army, or the son
of Naphtali.
This was the order of march ofthe sons of Israel by their army
armies.
As they set out, as mentioned, they are doing everything in
order and this is what the Lordis commanding.
This is not what Mosescommanded, this is not them
doing what they want to do.
This, this is what the say ofthe Lord.
(14:18):
Then Moses said to Hobad, theson of Reuel, the Midianite,
moses' father-in-law, we aresetting out to the place of
which the Lord said I will giveit to you, come with us and we
will do you good, for the Lordhas promised good concerning
Israel.
But he said to him I will notcome, come, but rather will go
to my own land and relatives.
(14:39):
Now, this is moses, uh, this is.
This is hobab, uh, this.
So this would be mosesbrother-in-law.
That was just speaking.
Then he said please do notleave us in as much, as you know
where we should camp in thewilderness, and you will be as
eyes for us.
That was moses asking brotherlaw, please do not leave.
So it will be.
(15:00):
If you go with us, it will comeabout that whatever good the
lord does for us, we will do foryou.
Thus they set out from the mountof the lord, three days journey
with the ark of the covenant ofthe lord journey in front of
them for the three days to seekout a resting place for them.
Now we see how long thisjourney was.
It was a three-day journey andthe cloud of the lord was over
(15:24):
them by day when they set outfrom the camp.
Then it came about when the arkset out, that moses said rise
up, oh lord, and let thineenemies be scattered and let
those who hate thee flee beforethee.
What is Moses saying?
Because the cloud of the Lord, their protection, is above them.
So he's asking the Lord toscatter out the people who will
(15:45):
be the enemies ahead of timeverse 36.
And when it came to rest, hesaid return thou, o Lord, to the
myriad thousands of Israel.
So when the Lord, when theclouds stopped and the Lord came
to rest, the Lord Moses alsoset up another prayer.
So he set up the first prayer,or the praise, if you will, to
(16:09):
ask the Lord to go before themand to scatter the enemies.
And then, when it was time torest, he gave a prayer of rest.
All right, that brings us tothe end of Numbers, chapter 10.
