Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Berean's Corner, the podcast where we go
through books of the Biblechapter by chapter and verse by
verse, wherever you are in theworld.
Thank you for joining.
Grab a glass of water, a cup ofcoffee or tea and let's get
into today's lesson.
All right, thank you forjoining me.

(00:35):
Open your Bible to Numbers, chapter 12.
The title of today's lesson isthe Murmuring of Miriam and.
Aaron, lesson is the murmuringof Miriam and Aaron.
For those of you who are newhere, what we do is we bring in
the reader first and then we gointo the lesson, like to always
bring the reader in first.
That way, you get the scriptureinto your mind in its context

(00:56):
and then we go back and we breakit down verse by verse in its
context.
Of course, if you are new here,we would appreciate it if you
start all the way back to thebeginning, because the whole
point of this is to go throughthe Bible in chronological order
.
But for today we are in Numbers, chapter 12, and let's read.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Numbers 12.
Miriam and Aaron began to talkagainst Moses because of his
Cushite wife, for he had marrieda Cushite.
Has the Lord spoken onlythrough Moses?
They asked Hasn't he alsospoken through us?
And the Lord heard this.
Now.
Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on

(01:40):
the face of the earth.
At once, the Lord said to Moses, aaron and Miriam Come out to
the tent of meeting all three ofyou.
So the three of them came out.
Then the Lord came down in apillar of cloud.
He stood at the entrance to thetent and summoned Aaron and
Miriam.
When both of them steppedforward, he said Listen to my

(02:04):
words.
When a prophet of the Lord isamong you, I reveal myself to
him in visions, I speak to himin dreams, but this is not true
of my servant Moses.
He is faithful in all my house.
With him I speak face to face, clearly, and not in riddles.

(02:26):
He sees the form of the Lord.
Why then, were you not afraidto speak against my servant
Moses?
The anger of the Lord burnedagainst them and he left them.
When the cloud lifted from abovethe tent, there stood Miriam,

(02:47):
leprous like snow.
Aaron turned toward her and sawthat she had leprosy and he
said to Moses Please, my Lord,do not hold against us the sin
we have so foolishly committed.
Do not let her be like astillborn infant coming from its
mother's womb with its fleshhalf eaten away.

(03:10):
So Moses cried out to the LordO God, please heal her.
The Lord replied to Moses.
If her father had spit in herface, would she not have been in
disgrace for seven days?
Confine her outside the campfor seven days.

(03:31):
After that she can be broughtback.
So Miriam was confined outsidethe camp for seven days and the
people did not move on until shewas brought back.
And the people did not move onuntil she was brought back.
After that the people leftHazroth and encamped in the
desert of Paran.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Welcome back Now.
The last time we were together,we looked at the complaining of
Israel.
Today, the complainingcontinues as Miriam and Aaron
complain about Moses and hiswife.
Now what we've done is we brokedown this chapter into seven
parts.
Part one Miriam and Aaron speak.

(04:15):
We see this in verses one totwo.
Then Miriam and Aaron spokeagainst Moses because of the
Cushite woman whom he hadmarried.
For he had married a Cushitewoman.
And they said has the Lordindeed spoken only through Moses
?
Has he not spoken through us aswell?

(04:36):
And the Lord heard it.
Now there has been muchspeculation as to why Miriam and
Aaron spoke out against Moses, but verse one says because of
the Cushite woman whom he hadmarried.
Now, the reasons for this couldbe many.
It could be because of somelegal codes that they have, it

(04:56):
could be because of Moses firstwife still being in the picture
Moses first wife, zipporah.
So just to refresh, keep yourfinger right here, but go back
to Exodus, chapter 2, exodus, chapter 2, and we're going to
look at verses 15 through 21 togive us a refresher.

(05:18):
When Pharaoh heard of thismatter, he tried to kill Moses.
This is after Moses had killedthe Egyptian, but Moses fled
from the presence of Pharaoh andsettled in the land of Midian
and he sat down by a well.
Now the priest of Midian hasseven daughters and they came to
draw water and fill the troughs, to water their father's flock.
Then the shepherds came anddrove them away, but Moses stood

(05:41):
up and helped them and wateredtheir flock.
When they came to Raul, theirfather, he said why have you
come back as so soon today?
So they said, an Egyptiandelivered us from the hand of
the shepherds and, what is more,he even drew the water for us
and watered the flock.
Sorry, and and he said to hisdaughters where is he then?

(06:05):
Why is it that you have leftthe man behind?
Invite him to have something toeat.
And Moses was willing to dwellwith the man and he gave his
daughter, zipporah, to Moses.
So that's a refresher whoZipporah is now Midian.
Where Zipporah is from ismodern-day Saudi Arabia, so it
is safe to assume that Zipporahwas of Arabic ethnicity, but the

(06:28):
scripture does not tell us whathappened to her.
Maybe she passed away, or maybeshe went back to her father's
house, or it could be becauseMoses' new wife is a Cushite now
.
Cush is what the land south ofEgypt and Libya was called.
Those lands would be Sudan, eritrea, djibouti and Ethiopia,

(06:50):
where Moses' new wife was from.
So Miriam and Aaron could havea racial thing going.
But you also have to noticesomething that was said in verse
2.
And they said has the Lordindeed only spoke through Moses?
Has he not spoken through us aswell?
So it also could be that Miriamand Aaron have an issue because

(07:14):
Moses is doing the speaking forthe Lord, because the Lord is
not using them in the same waythat he used Moses.
But we have to look at what thescripture says.
Verse one said because of theCushite woman.
So, as I mentioned, there couldbe many reasons why Miriam and
Aaron had issues with this.
Moving on to part two, the Lordspoke.
Notice verses three to four.

(07:36):
Now, the man, moses was veryhumble, more than any man who
was on the face of the earth.
And suddenly the Lord said toMoses and Aaron and to Miriam
you three come out to the tentof meeting.
So the three of them came out.
The scripture says the Lordspoke to all three of them.

(07:58):
So this wasn't an issue wherehe just spoke to Moses, but he
spoke to Moses, aaron and Miriam.
Remember Miriam brought up andsaid, or I should say Miriam and
Aaron said is the Lord onlyspoke to the most.
Now the Lord is speaking to allthree of them, which moves us
on to part three.
The Lord calls Miriam and Aaronout.
We see this in verses five tonine.
Then the Lord came down In apillar of cloud and stood at the

(08:23):
doorway of the tent and hecalled Aaron and Miriam.
When they had both come forward.
He said hear now my words.
If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, shall make myself
Known to him.
In a vision.
I shall speak with him in adream, not so with my servant
Moses.
He is faithful in all myhousehold.

(08:45):
With him I speak mouth to mouth.
Knows what the Lord said.
Yes, aaron is different and heis called different.
That's why I deal with himdifferent.
With him I speak mouth to mouth, even openly, and not in a dark
saying, and he beholds the formof the Lord.
When they then sorry, why thenwere you not afraid to speak
against my servant, againstMoses?

(09:07):
So what?
The I'm sorry?
One more verse.
So the anger of the Lord burnedagainst them and he departed.
So the Lord is telling them ifyou knew these things.
He's talking to Aaron andMiriam.
If you know how I've dealt withMoses, why were you not afraid
to speak up against him?
I'm using him mightily.
Yes, I do speak to some of youin visions and dreams, but him I

(09:28):
speak to face to face, mouth tomouth.
Part four the Lord departs, buthe leaves a plague on miriam.
Notice verse 10.
Sorry, let's go, let's go.
Let's go back to verse 9 and do9 and 10.
So the anger of the lord burnedagainst them and he departed.
But when the cloud hadwithdrawn from over the tent,
behold, miriam was leprous aswhite as snow.

(09:51):
As aaron turned towards miriam, behold, she was leprous.
Now, as you all remember, leprosy was a huge disease in
that time, and what it did wasit basically put these scabs or
these scales on your body.
That was very, very white onceagain.
Not white as we know a Europeanto be or white American to be,
but white like snow.
It was like a powder, kind oflike powdered sugar, was poured

(10:13):
on you.
Part five Aaron cries out toMoses for forgiveness.
Notice verses 11 and 12.
Then Aaron said to Moses oh myLord, I beg you, do not account
this sin to us, in which we haveacted foolishly and in which we
have sin.
Oh, do not let her be like onedead whose flesh is half eaten

(10:35):
away when he comes from hismother's womb.
So now Aaron is crying out, because now the Lord has put the
action on them and actually putit on Miriam.
Now Aaron is crying out for hissister.
Part six Moses cries out to theLord to heal his sister.
Verse 13 Moses cried out to theLord saying oh God, heal her, I

(10:56):
pray.
Even though they're goingthrough all of this, moses still
cares about his sister andactually Moses and Miriam have a
relationship.
Let's look at theirrelationship.
Keep your finger right here.
Go back to Exodus A little bitago I had you in Exodus chapter
two.
We're going to go back a littleearlier in Exodus chapter two.
So you can kind of see therelationship that they had.

(11:16):
Exodus, chapter 2.
We're going to look at verses 1through 8.
Now a man from the house ofLevi went and married a daughter
of Levi and the woman conceivedand bore a son and when she saw
that he was beautiful, she hidhim for three months.
But when she could hide him nolonger, she got him a wicker
basket and covered it over withtar and pitch.

(11:37):
Then she put the child into itand set it among the reeds by
the bank of the Nile and hissister stood at a distance to
find out what would happen tohim.
We know that the baby in thebasket is Moses, the sister is
Miriam.
Then the daughter of Pharaohcame down to bathe at the Nile
with her maidens walking alongthe Nile, and she saw the basket

(11:57):
among the reeds and sent hermaid and she brought it to her.
When she opened it she saw thechild and behold, the boy was
crying and she had pity on himand said this is one of the
Hebrews children.
Then his sister, that's Miriam, said to Pharaoh's daughter
shall I go and call a nurse foryou from the Hebrew women that
she may nurse the child for you?

(12:18):
And Pharaoh's daughter said toher go ahead.
So the girl went and called thechild's mother.
So Moses and Miriam have arelationship.
Of course, miriam is a littlebit older.
I'm not exactly how old Miriamis, but we know she's older than
Moses because Moses is threemonths or so and she is a bigger
child because she's runningalong the river to see what

(12:39):
would happen to him.
And now we get to part seven.
God responds to Moses pleaverses 14 to 16.
But the Lord said to Moseslet's go back to 13.
And Moses cried out to the Lordsaying oh Lord, heal, heal her,
I pray.
But the Lord said to Moses ifher father had but spit in her

(12:59):
face, would she not bear hershame for seven days?
That's a question.
Let her be shut up for sevendays outside the camp and
afterwards she may be receivedagain.
So Miriam was shut up outsidethe camp for seven days and the
people did not move on untilMiriam was received again.
Remember this is what they hadto do when they was full of
leprosy, verse 16.

(13:21):
Afterward, however, the peoplemoved out from uh Hezaroth and
camped in the wilderness ofParan.
All right, that brings us to theend of Exodus, chapter.
Excuse me, we went to exit somany times I lost my spot.
That brings us to the end ofNumbers, chapter 12.
I hope that you got somethingout of this lesson.

(13:42):
You know, aaron and Miriam.
You would think that the factthat the Lord was in the pillar
cloud by day, that they wouldknow that the Lord was dealing
with Moses, and you would thinkthat they wouldn't have that
jealousy in their heart, ormaybe even that hatred in their
heart towards his wife, butinstead they would go along with
God's plan.
But of course, just like allhuman beings, do we always have

(14:03):
to find a problem with something, even when the Lord has his
hands on it.
And we see that he has hishands on it.
All right.
That brings us to the end ofNumbers, chapter 12.
I hope you enjoyed this and gotsomething out of it.
As always, I'm asking you topray for me that I stay strong
in these scriptures and wecontinue to race, and I am
always doing the same for you.
That is all.
