The title of today's lesson isSpies View the Land, Numbers 13,
.
And let's get into it.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Numbers 13.
The Lord said to Moses sendsome men to explore the land of
Canaan which I am giving to theIsraelites.
From each ancestral tribe, sendone of its leaders.
So, at the Lord's command, moses sent them out from the
desert of Paran.
All of them were leaders of theIsraelites.
(01:07):
These are their names From thetribe of Reuben Shamwa, son of
Zakur.
From the tribe of Simeon, shaphat, son of Horai.
From the tribe of Judah, caleb, son of Jephunneh.
From the tribe of Issachar Egal, son of Joseph.
From the tribe of EphraimHoshea, son of Nun.
(01:29):
From the tribe of BenjaminPaltai, son of Raphu.
From the tribe of Zebulun, gadiel, son of Zodai.
From the tribe of Manasseh, atribe of Joseph Gadai, son of
Susai.
From the tribe of Dan Amiel, son of Gamali.
From the tribe of Asher Sethar, son of Michael.
(01:51):
From the tribe of NaphtaliNabai, son of Vosai.
From the tribe of Gad, guel, son of Machai.
These are the names of the menMoses sent to explore the land.
Moses gave Hosea, son of Nun,the name Joshua.
When Moses sent them to exploreCanaan, he said Go up through
(02:11):
the Negev and on to the hillcountry, see what the land is
like and whether the people wholive there are strong or weak,
few or many.
What kind of land do they livein?
Is it good or bad?
What kind of towns do they livein?
Are they unwalled or fortified?
How is the soil?
Is it fertile or poor?
Are there trees on it or not?
(02:32):
Do your best to bring back someof the fruit of the land.
It was the season for the firstripe grapes, so they went up and
explored the land from thedesert of Zin as far as Rehob
toward Lebo Hamath.
They went up through the Negevand came to Hebron, where Ahiman
, sheshai and Talmiah, thedescendants of Anak, lived.
(02:56):
Hebron had been built sevenyears before Zoan in Egypt.
When they reached the valley ofEshkol, they cut off a branch
bearing a single cluster ofgrapes.
Two of them carried it on apole between them, along with
some pomegranates and figs.
The place was called the valleyof Eshkol because of the
(03:16):
cluster of grapes the Israelitescut off there.
At the end of forty days theyreturned from exploring the land
.
They came back to Moses andAaron and the whole Israelite
community at Kadesh, in thedesert of Paran.
There they reported to them andto the whole assembly and
showed them the fruit of theland.
They gave Moses this account.
(03:36):
We went into the land to whichyou sent us and it does flow
with milk and honey.
Here is its fruit.
But the people who live thereare powerful and their cities
are fortified and very large.
We even saw descendants of Anakthere.
The Amalekites live in theNegev, the Hittites, jebusites
and Amorites live in the hillcountry and the Canaanites live
(03:59):
near the sea and along theJordan.
Then Caleb silenced the peoplebefore Moses and said we should
go up and take possession of theland, for we can certainly do
it.
But the men who had gone upwith him said we can't attack
those people.
They are stronger than we are.
And they spread among theIsraelites a bad report about
(04:20):
the land they had explored.
They said the land we exploreddevours those living in it.
All the people we saw there areof great size.
We saw the Nephilim there.
The descendants of Anak comefrom the Nephilim.
We seemed like grasshoppers inour own eyes and we looked the
same to them.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
All right.
The last time we were togetherwe went over the murmuring that
Miriam and Aaron had towardsMoses and his wife.
Today we are looking at thespies searching out the land of
Canaan.
Now we have broke this downinto seven parts.
Part 1.
The Lord speaks to Moses andsays it's time to send out spies
(05:05):
to see the land.
We see this in verses 1 through2.
Then the Lord spoke to Mosessaying send out for yourselves
men so that they may spy out theland of Canaan, which I am
going to give to the sons ofIsrael.
You shall send a man from eachof their father's tribes, every
(05:26):
one a leader among them.
Now there are two things I wantto point out about these first
two verses.
One God said I am going to give.
The Lord didn't say maybe.
So when he's sending them tospy out this land, he's letting
them know that this is a promise.
This is going to happen now.
Why am I stopping and pointingthis out?
(05:47):
Because these people, no matterwhat they have seen over these
last few months and years, theystill are always doubting, they
still always have questions.
They are still murmuring.
Number two the men Moses was tochoose were leaders of the
tribes.
Part two Moses sends the menout.
(06:08):
We see this in verse three.
So Moses sent them from thewilderness of Paran, at the
command of the Lord.
All of them men who were headsof the sons of Israel.
As the Lord mentioned, they hadto be leaders.
So these are all men of thesons of Israel.
Part three.
These are the men of the sonsof Israel.
Part three.
These are the men who were sentout and we see this in verses 4
(06:30):
through 15.
Verse 4 we see Reuben thesethen were their names from the
tribe of Reuben.
Shemua, the son of Zakar.
In verse 5, we see Simeon fromthe tribe of Simeon.
Shaphat, the son of Horai.
(06:51):
Verse 6 we see Judah from thetribe of Judah.
Caleb, the son of Jephunneh.
Verse 7 we see Issachar, fromthe tribe of Issachar.
Igel, the son of Joseph.
In verse 8 we see Ephraim fromthe tribe of Ephraim.
Hosea, the son of Nun.
(07:12):
Now this Hosea will get a namechange to Joshua.
Verse 9 Benjamin, from thetribe of Benjamin.
Piltai, the son of Rahu.
In verse 10 we see Zebulun, from the tribe of Zebulun.
Gadiel, the son of Sodai.
In verse 11, we see Joseph fromManasseh, from the son of Sodai
(07:36):
.
In verse 11, we see Joseph fromManasseh, from the tribe of
Joseph, from the tribe ofManasseh, gadai, the son of
Shushai.
In verse 12, we see Dan Fromthe tribe of Dan, emiel, the son
of Germali.
In verse 13, we see Asher Fromthe tribe of Asher Sither, the
(07:58):
son of Michael.
In verse 14, we see NaphtaliFrom the tribe of Naphtali,
nabai, the son of Zafusai, andthen in verse 15, we see Gad
From the tribe of Gad, guel, theson of Machai.
(08:19):
Now we move on to part four.
Hosea gets a name change inverse 16.
These are the names of the menwhom Moses sent to spy out the
land, but Moses called Hosea theson of Nun Joshua, and we saw
that back in verse 8, whichbrings us to part 5.
(08:39):
Moses gives instructions.
We see this in verses 17through 20.
When Moses sent them to spotout the land of Canaan, he said
to them go up there and in thegaff, then go up into the hill
country and see what the land islike and whether the people who
live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many,
(09:01):
and how is the land in whichthey live, is it good or bad?
And how are the cities in whichthey live.
Are they like open camps orwith uh fortifications?
And how is the land?
Is it fat or lean?
Are there trees in it or not?
Make an effort then.
Go get some of the fruit of theland.
(09:21):
Now the time was the time ofthe first ripe grapes.
Now you gotta look at all thethings that moses is telling
them to do.
Let's go through these versesagain.
Moses is giving them clearinstructions back to do.
Let's let's go through theseverses again.
Moses is giving them clearinstructions back to.
Verse 17 told him to go intothe Negev, which is where
they're going into the hillcountry and see what the land is
(09:42):
like and whether the people wholive in are stronger.
We so he's saying really, byyour eyes, what do you see?
What do your eyes see?
Do they look strong or theylook weak?
Now we all know that looks cancan be deceiving.
But if the land is full of sixfoot three, six foot five men
who are 270 pounds, of coursethey're going to come back and
say that they are strong, but ofcourse, if it's full of scrawny
(10:05):
125, 140 pound men, they willsay weak.
So in other words, moses issaying tell me what you see with
your eyes.
He also wants to know whetherthey are few or many.
So when you look down, tell meis it full of people or are
there a few?
Are there a hundred thousandpeople in this city or are there
one thousand?
Then he said and how is the landin which they live?
Is it good or bad?
(10:25):
These are things that you can'ttell with the eyes.
You can look at the grass, youcan look at the trees, you can
even look at the flowing water.
You can look at the trees, youcan even look at the flowing
water, you can look at thestructure to tell if it's good
or bad.
And how are the cities in whichthey live?
Are they open or are theyfortified?
Very easy, you go up on thehill, you look down.
Do they have a brick wall builtaround it to protect them, or
(10:47):
is it just wide open, like wecan just sneak down and get in
with no problems?
And how is the land?
Is it sneak down and get inwith no problems?
And how is the land?
Is it fat or lean?
By this I believe that moses istalking about like, let's say,
the kettle.
Is it full of kettle?
Is it full of the fattenedcalves and, uh, you know, the
chickens and everything elsethat's down there.
Or is it lean?
Is there a hundred thousandpeople but not much food.
(11:09):
Then he says are there trees init or not?
You know, trees give us oxygen, they also give us shade.
And then he said make an effortto get some of the fruit of the
land.
Why is that?
Because so that way they cantaste the fruit and see what the
fruit is like.
We move on to part six.
The spies are set out, which isin verses 21 through 24.
(11:30):
So they went up and spotted upthe land from the wilderness of
Zin as far as Rohab at LevitHamath.
When they had gone up into theNegev, they came to Hebron,
where Ahaman, shishah and Tamai, the descendants of the Anak,
were.
Now Hebron was built sevenyears before Zoan in Egypt.
(11:53):
Then they came to the valley ofeskor and from there cut down a
branch with a single cluster ofgrapes and they carried it on a
pole between two men with someof the pomegranates and the figs
.
That place was called thevalley of eskor because of the
cluster which the sons of Israelcut down from there.
(12:14):
Now I do want to point outsomething.
Let's go back to verse 23.
It says that they cut down abranch, a single cluster of
grapes, and they carried it on apole between two men.
Now you got to think about this.
This says that this is a singlevine of grapes, but it took two
men on the pole to carry it.
So that tells you how big andand luscious that this fruit was
(12:36):
.
Now we move on to part seven.
The spies report back.
They now have looked down onthe land.
They have the fruit that mosesasked them to bring back.
They have grapes andpomegranates.
Now they're reporting back andlet's look at their findings
verses 25 through 33.
When they return from spyingout the land, at the end of 40
(12:57):
days they were up there, 40 days.
This wasn't a one-day trip.
They went up here, they lookeddown the valley and they stayed
up there for over a month.
They proceeded to come to Mosesand Aaron and to all the
congregation of the sons ofIsrael in the wilderness of
Paran at Kadesh, and theybrought back word to them and to
all the congregation and showedthem the fruit of the lamb.
(13:19):
So it's show and tell timethey're coming back and showing
them.
This is what we saw, this iswhat we found, verse 27,.
Thus they told him and said wewent into the land where you
sent us and it certainly doesflow with milk and honey and
this is the fruit.
Remember, the Lord said he wasgoing to send them into a land
(13:40):
that flow with milk and honey.
So they're showing them, youknow, this is fruit they
probably have have never seenbefore.
28, verse 28.
Nevertheless, the people wholive in the land are strong and
the cities are fortified andvery large and, moreover, we saw
the descendants of Anak there.
All right, this is the thing.
They're showing them the fruit.
They're excited about the fruit, but they're telling them that
(14:02):
you asked us were they strong orweak?
We're telling you that they'restrong.
29, amalek is living in theland of the Negev, and the
Hittites and the Jebusites andthe Amorites are living in the
hill country and the Canaanitesare living by the sea and by the
side of the Jordan.
So now they're telling themwhat people live there.
(14:24):
Then Caleb quieted the peoplebefore Moses and said we should
by all means go up and takepossession of it, for we shall
surely overcome it.
Now Caleb is remembering whatthe Lord said.
Caleb is saying you know, forget all of that, that y'all
talking about how strong thesepeople are.
The Lord told us that he wouldgive us this land.
So Caleb is, quieted the people, because the people are
(14:47):
listening to this report andobviously they get a little
anxious.
They're like, wow, we didn'tknow that it was going to be
like that in the land, you know.
But Caleb spoke up and saidwe're going to be all right, we
should go down there and take itVerse 31.
But the men who had gone upwith him said we are not able to
go up against the people, forthey are too strong for us.
Once again, these people whowent up there with Caleb, they
(15:09):
forgot what the Lord said.
Remember what I said back inthe beginning.
The Lord said that he wouldgive them this land, not that he
might give them this land, butthese people, afraid of their
own shadow, are afraid of thesepeople and they don't believe it
Verse 32.
So they gave out to the sons ofIsrael a bad report of the land
which they had spied out ofIsrael.
(15:31):
A bad report of the land whichthey had spied out, saying the
land through which we have gonein spying it out is a land that
devours its inhabitants and allthe people whom we saw in it are
men of giant size.
So now they are given a falsereport because they don't want
to go to war.
So what they're doing is isthat they're trying to scare the
people who are already scaredand they're trying to cement it
(15:52):
by saying listen, we, we can't,we're not going to tell them the
absolute truth.
We're going to say that it'sworse than we thought.
But then we get to verse 33.
There also, we saw the Nephilim.
Now you remember the Nephilimfrom Genesis?
The sons of Anak are part ofthe Nephilim, and we became like
grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.
(16:14):
So what this verse right hereis saying is that they see them
as giant and they see themselvesas small.
It kind of reminds me of boxing.
I'm a big boxing fan and if anyof you remember Mike Tyson when
he was in his prime, back whenhe was young, even though he was
only five foot ten, they neverseen a guy with that type of
(16:34):
speed and that type of power, and it's said that he had
fighters beat before he evenwent in the ring, you know so,
in other words, even men whowere six foot two.
They saw themselves asgrasshoppers in him, in his
sight, and they saw themselvesas giants.
And when men think like hissight and they saw themselves as
giants.
And when men think like that, they're already going in beat.
They're already going in readyto be defeated.
(16:55):
And that's what these israelitesare doing.
They didn't even challengedthese guys yet.
They didn't even take intoaccount what the Lord said.
They see, they said we seeourselves as grasshoppers and so
we are in there, so we seeourselves as small and that's
how they're going to see us.
So these men who are supposedto go to war are already beat
before the battle begins.
(17:16):
Once again, they did nothearken on to the voice of the
Lord that he would give them theland.
Give them the land.
They didn't hearken on to hisvoice to realize that, no matter
what obstacles are in front ofyou, he is going to see them
through it.
And that is the tale of thepeople going to spy out the land
, the report that the spiesbrought back when they went up
to spy the land for 40 days.
(17:37):
All right, that brings us tothe end of numbers, chapter 13.
