(00:34):
As always, open your bible tonumbers chapter 14 as we get
into today's lesson.
The title of the lesson is thePeople Rebel Numbers chapter 14,
and let's read.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Numbers 14.
That night all the people ofthe community raised their
voices and wept aloud.
All the Israelites grumbledagainst Moses and Aaron.
And the whole assembly said tothem If only we had died in
Egypt or in this desert.
Why is the Lord bringing us tothis land only to let us fall by
the sword?
(01:08):
Our wives and children will betaken as plunder.
Wouldn't it be better for us togo back to Egypt?
And they said to each other weshould choose a leader and go
back to Egypt.
Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole
Israelite assembly gatheredthere.
Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, who were among
(01:30):
those who had explored the land, tore their clothes and said to
the entire Israelite assemblythe land we passed through and
explored is exceedingly good.
If the Lord is pleased with us,he will lead us into that land,
a land flowing with milk andhoney, and will give it to us.
Only, do not rebel against theLord and do not be afraid of the
(01:53):
people of the land, because wewill swallow them up.
Their protection is gone, butthe Lord is with us.
Do not be afraid of them.
But the whole assembly talkedabout stoning them.
Then the glory of the Lordappeared at the tent of meeting
to all the Israelites.
The Lord said to Moses how longwill these people treat me with
(02:16):
contempt?
How long will they refuse tobelieve in me, in spite of all
the miraculous signs I haveperformed among them?
Me, in spite of all themiraculous signs I have
performed among them, I willstrike them down with a plague
and destroy them, but I willmake you into a nation greater
and stronger than they.
Moses said to the Lord.
(02:37):
Then the Egyptians will hearabout it.
By your power, you broughtthese people up from among them
and they will tell theinhabitants of this land about
it.
By your power, you broughtthese people up from among them
and they will tell theinhabitants of this land about
it.
They have already heard thatyou, o Lord, are with these
people and that you, o Lord, have been seen face to face,
that your cloud stays over themand that you go before them in a
(03:00):
pillar of cloud by day and apillar of fire by night.
If you put these people todeath all at one time, the
nations who have heard thisreport about you will say the
Lord was not able to bring thesepeople into the land he
promised them on oath.
So he slaughtered them in thedesert.
Now may the Lord's strength bedisplayed.
(03:21):
Just as you have declared.
The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving
sin and rebellion.
Yet he does not leave theguilty unpunished.
He punishes the children forthe sin of the fathers to the
third and fourth generation.
In accordance with your greatlove, forgive the sin of these
(03:43):
people, just as you havepardoned them from the time they
left Egypt until now.
The Lord replied I haveforgiven them, as you asked.
Nevertheless, as surely as Ilive and as surely as the glory
of the Lord fills the wholeearth, not one of the men who
(04:04):
saw my glory and the miraculoussigns I performed in Egypt and
in the desert, but who disobeyedme and tested me ten times, not
one of them will ever see theland I promised on oath to their
forefathers.
No one who has treated me withcontempt will ever see it.
But because my servant Calebhas a different spirit and
(04:29):
follows me wholeheartedly, Iwill bring him into the land he
went to and his descendants willinherit it.
Since the Amalekites and theCanaanites are living in the
valleys, turn back tomorrow andset out toward the desert along
the route to the Red Sea.
The Lord said to Moses andAaron how long will this wicked
(04:51):
community grumble against me?
I have heard the complaints ofthese grumbling Israelites, so
tell them as surely as I live, declares the Lord.
I will do to you the verythings I heard you say.
In this desert, your bodieswill fall, every one of you,
twenty years old or more, whowas counted in the census and
(05:14):
who has grumbled against me.
Not one of you will enter theland.
I swore with uplifted hand handto make your home, except Caleb
, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun.
As for your children that yousaid would be taken as plunder,
I will bring them in to enjoythe land you have rejected.
(05:36):
But you, your bodies, will fallin this desert.
Your children will be shepherdshere for forty years, suffering
for your unfaithfulness, untilthe last of your bodies lies in
the desert.
For forty years, one year foreach of the forty days you
explored the land.
(05:57):
You will suffer for your sinsand know what it is like to have
me against you.
I, the Lord, have spoken and Iwill surely do these things to
this whole wicked communitywhich has banded together
against me.
They will meet their end inthis desert.
Here they will die.
(06:20):
So the men Moses had sent toexplore the land, who returned
and made the whole communitygrumble against him by spreading
a bad report about it, thesemen responsible for spreading
the bad report about the landwere struck down and died of a
plague before the Lord.
Of the men who went to explorethe land, only Joshua, son of
(06:42):
Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, survived.
When Moses reported this to allthe Israelites, they mourned
bitterly.
Early the next morning theywent up toward the high hill
country.
We have sinned, they said.
We will go up to the place theLord promised.
(07:03):
But Moses said why are youdisobeying the Lord's command?
This will not succeed.
Do not go up, because the Lordis not with you.
You will be defeated by yourenemies, for the Amalekites and
the Canaanites will face youthere Because you have turned
away from the Lord.
He will not be with you and youwill fall by the sword.
(07:24):
Nevertheless, in theirpresumption, they went up toward
the high hill country, thoughneither Moses nor the ark of the
Lord's covenant moved from thecamp.
Then the Amalekites andCanaanites who lived in that
hill country came down andattacked them and beat them down
all the way to Hormah.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
All right Now.
The last time we were together, moses sent the spies out to
view the land, heard the Lord'sinstructions.
Today, the people continue torebel.
Now we have broken this chapterdown into eight parts.
The first part is the peoplecry and weep.
We see this in verse one.
(08:09):
Then all the congregationlifted up their voices and cried
and the people wept that night.
As I mentioned before, thispeople continues to, uh, this
people continues to complain andgripe against the lord, and it
is no different here now.
(08:29):
This is following the fact thatthe spies went out and then the
spies came back and gave thereport and talked about the
Nephilim being in the land.
That could be the reasonthey're crying and weeping, but
the point is this the lord haswalked with these people, he has
shown himself to these people, yet these people are still
weeping and complaining.
Which brings us to part two.
The grumbling makes some of thepeople consider returning to
(08:51):
Egypt.
We see this in verses two tofour.
And all the sons of Israelgrumbled against Moses and Aaron
and the whole congregation saidto them would that we had died
in the land of Egypt, or wouldthat we had died in the land of
egypt, or would that we had diedin this wilderness?
And why is the lord bringing usinto this land to fall by the
sword?
Our wives and our little oneswill become plunder.
(09:15):
Would it not be better for usto return to egypt?
So they said to one another letus appoint a leader and return
to Egypt.
You know, it's very disturbingthat after all that these people
have been through, after allthe Lord has put these people
through, that their concern isreturning back to Egypt.
(09:35):
You know, there, in otherverses they talked about how,
when they were in Egypt, it was,it was better for them.
You know, things were betterwhen we were Egypt.
Yeah, we were slaves, butthings were better then, you
know, than they are right now.
It's very interesting and thatthese people are so spooked by
what the spy saw on the landthat they want to go back to
their own captivity instead ofrealizing that the Lord is with
(09:59):
them and the Lord is going todeliver them the way that he
said he would.
Part three some of the men tryto get the people to trust God.
We see this in verses five tonine.
Then Moses and Aaron fell ontheir faces in the presence of
all the assembly of thecongregation of the sons of
Israel, and Joshua, the son ofNun, and Caleb, the son of uh,
(10:22):
of those who had spat out theland, tore their clothes and
they spoke to all of thecongregation of the sons of
israel, saying the land which wepass through to spy out is an
exceedingly good land.
If the lord is pleased with us,then he will bring us into this
land and give it to us, a landwhich flows with milk and honey.
Only do not rebel against thelord and do not fear the people
(10:44):
of the land, for they shall beour prey.
Their protection has beenremoved from them and the Lord
is with us.
Do not fear them.
Listen, these men are trying toget these people to see.
Listen, the Lord is with us.
The Lord has shown that he'swith us.
He's going to lower thesepeople's defense and he's going
to strengthen us and we're goingto take the land which brings
(11:06):
to part four.
The people wanted to stone thefour men, but then god
intervenes.
We see this in verses 10 to 12.
But all the congregation saidto stone them with stones.
Then the glory of the lordappeared in the tent of meeting
to all the sons of israel.
Who did the lord show himselfto to all the sons of Israel.
Who did the Lord show himselfto?
To all the sons of Israel, toall the children of Israel?
(11:28):
Even after this plea that wasgiven to them, they still wanted
to stone them.
Now we don't want to hear noneof that.
We need to get y'all out ofhere, and then we're going to
kill the four of you, thenappoint someone to take us back
to Egypt.
Verse 11 and the Lord said toMoses how long will these people
spurn me and how long will theynot believe in me, despite all
(11:51):
the signs which I have performedin their midst?
What have I been saying?
The Lord is saying all the Lordhas shown himself to these
people, yet these people arestill against the Lord.
I will smite them withpestilence and dispose them, and
I will make you into a nationgreater and mightier than they.
The Lord is saying that youknow what I'm going to get these
(12:11):
people out of here withpestilence, and I'm still going
to make you a great nation.
Part five Moses once againintercedes to God on behalf of
Israel.
We see this in verses 13through 19.
But Moses said to the Lord thenthe Egyptians will hear of it,
for by thy strength thou didstbring up this people from their
(12:33):
midst and they will tell it tothe inhabitants of this land.
Art, lord, excuse me for thouart, lord, art seen eye to eye
while they cloud stands overthem and thou does not go, does
not go before them in the pillarby day and in the pillar of
(12:55):
fire by night.
Now, if thou does slay thispeople as one man, then the
nations who have heard of it, ofthy fame, will say because the
lord could not bring this peopleinto the land which he promised
them by oath.
Therefore he slaughtered themin the wilderness.
But now I pray, let the powerof the lord be great, just as
(13:16):
thou has declared.
The lord is slow to anger andabundant in loving, kindness,
forgiving iniquity andtransgressions, but he will by
no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers on the burden of thethird and fourth generation.
What, lord, what Moses ispleading here, is this he's
saying Lord, my God, if you takeall of these people out here in
(13:39):
the wilderness, the people backin Egypt, the ones who weren't
slain with Pharaoh and his army, they will start to spread it
around to all the other nationsthat the God of Israel is not a
mighty God, that the God ofIsrael only brought them out
there to let them die in thewilderness.
He brought them out therebecause he couldn't put them
into the land of milk and honey,as he said.
(14:00):
So Moses is pleading with theLord and saying Lord, do not let
your name be spoken down uponby these other nations.
Part six there are consequencesfor unbelief, and we see this in
verses 20 to 25.
Excuse me, so the lord said.
I have pardoned them accordingto your word, he's telling.
(14:21):
He's already started by tellingmoses.
You know, moses, I'm listeningto you, but indeed, as I live,
all the earth will be filledwith the glory of the Lord.
Surely all the men who haveseen my glory and my signs which
I perform in Egypt and in thewilderness, yet have put me to
the test these 10 times and havenot listened to my voice, shall
(14:43):
by no means see the land whichI swore to their fathers, nor
shall any of those who spurn mesee it.
But my servant Caleb, becausehe has had a different spirit
and has followed me fully, Iwill bring it to the land which
he entered and his descendantsshall make possession of it Now.
The Amalekites and theCanaanites live in the valleys,
(15:05):
turn tomorrow and set up to thewilderness by the sea, excuse me
, by the way of the red sea.
So what's going on here is isthat the lord is saying that all
these people who are againsthim, who are who have forgot his
, his ways, who have forgot whathe did for them, they won't see
the land, but he still is goingto keep his promise, as he
always does to israel, to comeinto this land.
(15:26):
Which brings us to part seven.
Israel keeps complaining.
We see this in verses 26 to 35.
The Lord spoke to Moses andAaron saying how long shall I
bear with this evil congregationwho are grumbling against me?
I have heard the complaints ofthe sons of Israel which they
are making against me.
The Lord is making it veryclear that he hears everything
(15:47):
that they're saying.
Say to them as I live, says theLord.
Just as you have spoken in myhearing, so I will surely do to
you.
Your corpses shall fall in thiswilderness, even all your
numbered men, according to yourcomplete number, from 20 years
old and upwards, who havegrumbled against me.
Surely you shall not come intothe land in which I swore to
(16:08):
settle you, except caleb, theson of uh jop and I, and joshua,
the son of none.
Your children, however, whomyou said will become a prey, I
will bring them in and theyshall know the land which you
have rejected.
They're not going in, but theirchildren will.
But as for you, your corpsesshall fall in this wilderness
(16:30):
and your sons shall be shepherdsfor 40 years in the wilderness,
and they shall suffer for yourunfaithfulness until your
corpses lie in the wilderness.
According to the number of dayswhich you spied out the land 40
days.
For every day you shall bearyour guilt.
A year, even 40 years.
You shall know my opposition.
I, the Lord, has spoken.
(16:51):
Surely this I will do to allthis evil congregation who are
gathered together against me inthis wilderness they shall be
destroyed and there they shalldie.
So the Lord has made it veryclear what's going to happen.
To listen the Lord is not goingto let this evil slide.
He has been here for thispeople, he has taking care of
this people, yet they are stillgrumbling, and they are
(17:13):
grumbling right in front of theLord's presence.
Remember the Lord appears tothem as a pillar of cloud in the
daytime and a pillar of fire innight.
He's guiding them, he's leadingthem.
Remember when the cloud went upand moved?
The people moved.
Why?
Because they knew that that wasGod right there in front of
them leading the way.
Yet and still these people arestill grumbling and complaining
(17:35):
against the Lord.
Then we get to part eight.
The negative spies go down andit's too late for Israel to get
the blessings back.
We see this in verses 36 to 45.
Ask for the men whom Moses sentto spot out the land and who
returned and made all thecongregation grumble against him
by bringing out a bad reportconcerning the land.
(17:55):
Even those men who brought outthe very bad report of the land
died by a plague before the Lord.
So it wasn't just the people, but it was also the ones who
came back with the bad report.
But Joshua, the son of Nun, andCaleb, the son of Jephunneh,
remained alive.
Out of those men who went tospot out the land, the two who
(18:16):
came back with the positivereport and said we can take the
land.
The land surely flows with milkand honey and the Lord will
give this land to us.
Those are the ones that theLord allowed to live.
And when Moses spoke these wordsto all the sons of israel.
The people mourned greatly inthe morning.
However, they rose up early andwent up to the ridge of the
hill country, saying here we are.
(18:38):
We have indeed sinned, but wewill go up to the place which
the lord has promised.
But moses said why then are youtransgressing the commandment
of the Lord when it will notsucceed?
In other words, what Moses saidto his people is is that you
talking nonsense just becauseyou spoke it with your mouth?
That that's that naming andclaiming stuff.
Just because you're saying thatyou know what we're going to go
(19:00):
up into this land because theLord promises, promised it to us
.
Moses is saying it will notsucceed.
What you're saying why?
Because the lord has alreadyspoken verse 42 do not go up
lest you be struck down beforeyour enemies, for the lord is
not among you.
Hey, the lord is not with thesepeople, the lord is not with
everybody.
The lord has removed hiscovering, covering from these
(19:20):
people, for the amalekites andthe canaanites will be there in
front of you and you will fallby the sword in as much as you
have turned back from followingthe Lord, and the Lord will not
be with you.
Moses is telling these peoplelisten, you can go up all you
want.
You can go fight, you can go towar, all you want.
The Lord is not with you.
He has removed his coveringfrom you.
(19:41):
But they went up heedlessly, tothe ridge of the hill country.
Neither the ark of the covenantof the lord, no more.
Moses left the camp.
Then the amalekites and thecanaanites who lived in that
hill country came down andstruck them and beat them down
as far as her mind.
So what happened to thesepeople?
Just what moses told them.
(20:01):
The lord already said that hewasn't with them.
And moses told them listen, youcan talk that.
Talk all you want.
The Lord is not with you.
You can, you can blab namingand claim it, blabbing and grab
it.
You can say all you want, oh no, no, we're gonna go and we're
gonna say that you know the Lordis with us and the Lord is
gonna do these things for us.
It is not gonna happen.
And what happened to them?
The Amalekites and theCanaanites struck them down.
(20:25):
All right, there was a lot oflessons in this story, right
here, when the Lord does amighty thing, when you know his,
his truth and his realness, youstick with the Lord, you stick
with his sayings, you stick withhis followers.
You don't turn against the Lord.
When the Lord promises a thing, that thing is going to come to
pass, and that is a lesson forus.
We need to use Israel back hereas a cautionary tale.
(20:46):
When you turn against the Lord, when you grumble against the
Lord, there is a consequence forthat.
All right, that brings us tothe end of Numbers, chapter 14.
As always, I hope you gotsomething out of this lesson.
