The title of today's lesson isLaws for Canaan.
As always, we will bring thereader up and we will read
through the chapter.
Now it's a.
It's a little lengthy 41 versesand all.
But as always, I believe it'simportant to get the to read the
(00:53):
scripture first and then toexpound on the text.
So numbers 15 and let's readnumbers 15.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
The lord said to
moses speak to the Israelites
and say to them After you enterthe land I am giving you as a
home and you present to the Lordofferings made by fire from the
herd or the flock as an aromapleasing to the Lord, whether
burnt offerings or sacrifices, for special vows or freewill
offerings or festival offerings, then the one who brings his
(01:25):
offering shall present to theLord a grain offering of a tenth
of an ephah of fine flour mixedwith a quarter of a hin of oil.
With each lamb for the burntoffering or the sacrifice.
Prepare a quarter of a hin ofwine as a drink offering.
With a ram, prepare a grainoffering of two tenthtenths of
an ephah of fine flour mixedwith a third of a hin of oil and
(01:48):
a third of a hin of wine as adrink offering.
Offer it as an aroma pleasingto the Lord.
When you prepare a young bullas a burnt offering or sacrifice
, for a special vow or afellowship offering to the Lord,
bring with the bull a grainoffering of three-tenths of an
ephah fine flour mixed with halfa hin of oil.
(02:10):
Also, bring half a hin of wineas a drink offering.
It will be an offering made byfire, an aroma pleasing to the
Lord.
Each bull or ram, each lamb oryoung goat is to be prepared in
this manner.
Do this for each one, for asmany as you prepare.
(02:32):
Everyone who is native bornmust do these things in this way
.
When he brings an offering madeby fire as an aroma pleasing to
the Lord For the generations tocome, whenever an alien or
anyone else living among youpresents an offering made by
fire as an aroma pleading to theLord, he must do exactly as you
do.
The community is to have thesame rules for you and for the
(02:55):
alien living among you.
This is a lasting ordinance forthe generations to come.
You and the aliens shall be thesame before the Lord.
The same laws and regulationswill apply both to you and to
the alien living among you.
The Lord said to Moses Speak tothe Israelites and say to them
(03:17):
when you enter the land to whichI am taking you and you eat the
food of the land, present aportion as an offering to the
Lord.
Present a cake from the firstof your ground meal and present
it as an offering from thethreshing floor Throughout the
generations to come.
You are to give this offeringto the Lord from the first of
(03:38):
your ground meal.
Now, if you unintentionally failto keep any of these commands
the Lord gave Moses any of theLord's commands to you through
him, from the day the Lord gavethem and continuing through the
generations to come, and if thisis done unintentionally,
without the community beingaware of it, then the whole
(03:59):
community is to offer a youngbull for a burnt offering as an
aroma pleasing to the Lord, along with its prescribed grain
offering and drink offering anda male goat for a sin offering.
The priest is to make atonementfor the whole Israelite
community and they will beforgiven, for it was not
intentional and they havebrought to the Lord for their
(04:22):
wrong an offering made by fireand a sin offering.
The whole Israelite communityand the alien living among them
will be forgiven because all thepeople were involved in the
unintentional wrong.
But if just one person sinsunintentionally, he must bring a
(04:44):
year-old female goat for a sinoffering.
The priest is to make atonementbefore the Lord for the one who
erred by sinningunintentionally and when
atonement has been made for him,he will be forgiven.
One and the same law applies toeveryone who sins
unintentionally, whether he is anative-born Israelite or an
(05:05):
alien.
But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or alien,
blasphemes the Lord, and thatperson must be cut off from his
people because he has despisedthe Lord's word and broken His
commands, that person mustsurely be cut off.
His guilt remains on him.
(05:29):
While the Israelites were in thedesert, a man was found
gathering wood on the Sabbathday.
Those who found him gatheringwood brought him to Moses and
Aaron and the whole assembly, and they kept him in custody
because it was not clear whatshould be done to him.
Then the Lord said to Moses theman must die.
The whole assembly must stonehim outside the camp.
(05:54):
So the assembly took himoutside the camp and stoned him
to death, as the Lord commandedMoses.
The Lord said to Moses Speak tothe Israelites and say to them
Throughout the generations tocome, you are to make tassels on
(06:15):
the corners of your garmentswith a blue cord on each tassel.
You will have these tassels tolook at, and so you will
remember all the commands of theLord, that you may obey them
and not prostitute yourselves bygoing after the lusts of your
own hearts and eyes.
Then you will remember to obeyall my commands and will be
(06:38):
consecrated to your God.
I am the Lord, your God, whobrought you out of Egypt to be
your God.
I am the Lord, your God, whobrought you out of Egypt to be
your God.
I am the Lord, your God allright now.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
The last time we were
together, we looked at the
rebellion of the people.
That was in numbers 14.
Today, we are looking at thelaws of Canaan, of Canaan and a
few other things in this chapter.
We will break down this chapterinto seven parts.
Part number one the Lord spoketo Moses.
We see this in verse one.
(07:14):
Now, the Lord spoke to Moses.
I always like to point out whoGod is talking to and, for any
of you who may just be catchingon, there is a reason why I do
that, the reason why I like toalways mention who the Lord is
talking to and, a lot of times, who are the people he's talking
to, because we have to keep thisthing in his context and in his
(07:36):
order.
It is important for people toknow that right here,
particularly in this oldTestament, the Lord is speaking
to israel.
He is speaking to moses, wholed israel out of the land of
egypt.
So I always like to point thatout.
Which brings me to part two.
Moses is commanded to speak toisrael.
Verse two speak to the sons ofisrael and say to them, when you
(08:01):
enter the land where you are tolive, which I am giving you, I
always like to point out, youknow, uh, I always like to point
out who God tells Moses tospeak to, as I mentioned in
verse one.
Verse one the Lord spoke toMoses.
Verse two he tells Moses who tospeak to.
Moses is speaking to who?
Verse two the sons of Partthree the people are to make a
(08:25):
soothing, a roaming offering tothe Lord.
We see this in verses threethrough 13.
Then make an offering by fireto the Lord, a burnt offering or
a sacrifice to fulfill aspecial vow, or as a free will
offering, or, in your appointedtimes, to make a soothing aroma
to the Lord from the herd orfrom the flock Remember, they
(08:49):
were giving sacrifices to theLord and the one who presents
his offering shall present tothe Lord a grain offering of one
tenth of an ephah, a fine flourmix with one fourth of a hen of
oil, and you shall prepare winefor the libation, one-fourth of
a hen with the burnt offering,or for the sacrifice for each
(09:11):
lamb, or for a man, excuse me orfor a ram, you shall prepare,
as a grain offering, two-tenthsof an ephah of fine flour mixed
with one-third of a hen of oil,and for the libation, you shall
offer one third of a hand ofwine as a soothing aroma to the
lord.
And when you prepare a bull asa burnt offering or a sacrifice
(09:32):
to fulfill a special vow or forpeace offerings to the lord,
then you shall offer, with thebull, a grain offering of three
tenths of an ephah of fine flour, mixed with one half a hand of
oil.
The lord is very particular onhow these or think these things
were to be done verse 10.
And you shall offer, as alibation, one half a hand of
(09:56):
wine as an offering by fire, asa soothing aroma to the lord.
Thus it shall be done for eachox, or for each ram, or for each
of the male lambs or of thegoats, according to the number
that you prepare.
So you shall do for everyone, according to their number.
All who are native shall dothese things, in this matter, in
(10:19):
presenting an offering by fireas a soothing aroma to the Lord,
as always, the Lord gave Israelthese things to do and he want
these things to be done specific, as I like to point out a lot.
Notice the Lord didn't say godo what you want.
He gave them particular, thethings that needed to be done.
(10:39):
Now we will talk about the lawof the sojourner, and we're
going to be looking at thatthrough verses 14 through 31,
part 4.
The alien was to conform to you, not the other way around.
We see this in verses 14through 16.
And if an alien sojourns withyou, or one who may be among you
(10:59):
throughout your generations, and he wishes to make an
offering by fire as a soothingaroma to the Lord, just as you
do, so he shall do.
As for the assembly, thereshall be one statute for you and
one for the alien who sojournswith you, a perpetual statute
throughout your generations, asyou are, so shall the alien be
(11:23):
before the lord.
There is to be one law and oneordination for you and for the
alien who's adjourns with you.
What is going on here, people?
The lord is saying this is whatthe lord is saying to his
people, and it is the same forus today.
The alien or the person who wasnot among your land.
They are to do as you do, not.
(11:43):
You do as they do.
They come into your land there, follow your rules.
The same can be said for anexample of a country you live in
now.
Uh, there are.
We have six continents, youknow.
I'm not going to countAntarctica, because I don't
really think people live thereor, if they are just people,
they're working.
But for for sake of argument, there are six continents.
(12:04):
This podcast has actuallytouched all six continents, but
in each continent there is arule in each of the countries,
in each of the continents.
When you are there, you are toabide by their rules, you are to
conform to them.
That is the same thing that ishappening here.
As an example, the alien thatcomes into the land is supposed
to come in and go by your rulesand your laws, not the other way
(12:28):
around.
Hope I made that pretty clear.
Part five there is a differencebetween intentional and
unintentional disobedience.
We see this in verses 17 to 31.
Then the Lord spoke to Mosessaying Lord, still speaking to
Moses, speak to the sons ofIsrael and say to them when you
(12:49):
enter the land where I bring you, then it shall be that when you
eat of the food of the land, you shall lift up an offering to
the Lord Of the first of yourdough.
You shall lift up an offeringto the lord of the first of your
dough.
You shall lift up a cake as anoffering, as the offering of the
threshing floor.
So you shall lift it up fromthe first of your dough.
(13:09):
You shall give to the lord anoffering throughout your
generations.
This was supposed to be donecontinuously.
But when you unwittingly failand do not observe all these
commandments which the Lord hasspoken to Moses, even all that
the Lord has commanded youthrough Moses, from the day when
the Lord gave commandment andall were throughout your
generations congregation, thatall the congregation shall offer
(13:41):
one bull for a burnt offeringas a soothing aroma to the Lord,
with his grain offering and itslibation according to the
ordinance, and one male goat fora sin offering.
Then the priests shall makeatonement for all the
congregation of the sons ofIsrael and they shall be
forgiven, for it was an errorand they have brought their
offering and offering by fire tothe lord and their sin offering
(14:02):
before the lord for their error.
So all the congregation of thesons of israel will be forgiven,
with the alien who sojournsamong them.
For it happened to all thepeople through error.
Let's pause right there realquick.
It even was going to be done tothe alien, like the like the
Lord just said, if it was doneunintentionally Verse 27.
(14:22):
Also, if one person sinsunintentionally, then he shall
offer a one year old female goatfor a sin offering and the
priest shall make atonementbefore the Lord for the person
who goes astray when he sinsunintentionally, making
atonement for him that he may beforgiven.
You shall have one law for himwho does anything
(14:45):
unintentionally, for him who isnative among the sons of israel
and for the alien who sojournsamong them.
But the person who does anythingdefiantly, whether he is native
or an alien, that one isblaspheming the Lord, and that
person shall be cut off fromamong his people because he has
despised the word of the Lordand has broken his commandment.
(15:07):
That person shall be completelycut off.
His guilt shall be on him.
What's happening here?
People is intentional andunintentional.
Now, a big part of that sectionwas dealing with intentional
and unintentional.
Now a big part of that sectionwas dealing with unintentional
sin, unintentional things thatpeople may not know.
Now that can happen with theperson who was of the land, but
it happens a lot with the personwho's not of the land, because
(15:29):
some of them they're justlearning the laws and what's
going on here.
But the lord is very key.
If you did something defiantly, you were to be cut off from
your people.
Now, you and I, let's put us inthis situation.
There are things and you knowwhat I just put myself in that
situation.
I leave you out of it.
There are things that I havedisobeyed of the Lord defiantly,
(15:50):
intentionally, meaning that Iknow that it was wrong, I know I
shouldn't be doing it, I'vethought about the thing and
still did it anyway.
This is what the Lord istalking about.
When you do something defiantly, you are to be cut off from
your people.
But thank God for grace, because I live in the time, in
the era of grace, where we canbe forgiven of these things
doesn't mean that it's okay todo them.
(16:11):
Doesn't mean that because youhave that grace, you should do
it.
But we can be forgiven for ourgrace.
But in this time, if I wasliving in this time, I would be
cut off from my people because Ihave done something un excuse
me intentionally.
And the lord says that isblaspheming his name.
So it was with the children ofisrael and a stranger who
sojourned among them.
(16:32):
Now we will move on to the lastparts and we are looking at the
consequence of not obeying God'slaw.
We see this in verses 32through 36.
Now, while the sons of Israelwere in the wilderness, they
found a man gathering wood onthe Sabbath day, and those who
found him gathering wood broughthim to Moses and Aaron and to
(16:54):
all the congregation and theyput him in custody because it
had not been declared whatshould be done with him.
Then the lord said moses, excuse me.
Then the lord said to moses, the man shall surely be put to
death.
All the congregation shallstone him with stones outside
the camp.
So all the congregation broughthim outside the camp and stoned
(17:16):
him to death with stones, justas the lord had commanded.
Moses now, excuse me.
Now, this, you know, was aserious law for israel given by
the lord.
This was a serious law.
Turn back, let's.
Let's look at this.
Turn back to keep your fingerright here in numbers, but turn
back to exodus chapter.
(17:37):
Go back to Exodus chapter 20.
Let's look at this law.
And when you get to Exoduschapter 20, we are going to look
at verses 8 to 11.
Exodus 20, starting at verse 8.
Remember the Sabbath day, tokeep it holy.
Six days you shall labor and doall your work, but the seventh
(18:02):
day is a Sabbath to the Lord, your God.
In it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your
daughter, your male or yourfemale servant, or your cattle
or your sojourner?
Remember, we're just talkingabout a sojourner who stays with
you.
Remember, we're just talkingabout a sojourner who stays with
you.
For in six days, the lord madethe heavens and the earth and
(18:23):
the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day.
Therefore, the lord blessed thesabbath day and made it holy.
So this was a serious charge toisrael.
Now, remember, this man, who isone of the children of israel,
is out gathering wood on thesabbath day.
This man, who is one of thechildren of Israel, is out
gathering wood on the Sabbathday, and this thing was a death
penalty.
Now, since we're in Exodus, goto the right a couple of
(18:45):
chapters and go to chapter 31,exodus 31, exodus 31, and we are
looking at verses 14 and 15.
Therefore, you are to observethe sabbath, for it is holy to
you, okay?
Everyone who profanes it shallsurely be put to death, for
(19:09):
whoever does any work on it,that person shall be cut off
from among his people.
For six days, work may be done, but on the seventh day there is
a sabbath of complete rest holyto the lord.
Whoever does any work on thesabbath day shall surely be put
to death.
This was a charge given toisrael, and not only to israel,
(19:33):
but to the people who were inthe land.
Now, this was not for listen tome, this was not for the people
outside of Israel.
This was for Israel and thepeople who were sojourning with
Israel.
That brings us back to Numbers, where we are, and we're going
to look at part seven to finishup chapter 15.
The Lord gives Israel a reminderhow to remember their holiness.
(19:54):
We see this in verses 37 to 41.
The Lord also spoke to Moses, saying the Lord is continue to
speak to Moses, listen up, speakto the sons of Israel and tell
them that they shall make forthemselves tassels on the corner
of their garments throughouttheir generations, and that they
shall put on the tassels ofeach corner a cord of blue.
(20:19):
Who was the Lord talking to?
He's talking to Israel, and itshall be a tassel for you to
look at and remember all thecommandments of the Lord, so as
to do them and not follow afteryour own heart and your own eyes
.
After which you played theharlot in order that you may
remember to do all mycommandments and be holy to your
(20:39):
God.
I am the Lord, your God, whobrought you out from the land of
Egypt.
Who did the Lord bring out ofthe land of Egypt, israel, to be
your God.
I am the Lord, your God.
And the Lord gave them that asa reminder, not as a fashion
statement, but to remind them ofa way to remember the law.
So when they look down, uh, ontheir, at their, at their robes,
(21:02):
they were supposed to see thatblue, those blue tassels on the
end.
Or when they put their robe onevery day, they would see those
blue tassels as a reminder ofwhat they were to do.
Okay, that brings us to the endof numbers, chapter 15.
I hope that you got somethingout of this lesson and enjoyed
this lesson.
As I always ask and will alwaysask, please continue to pray
for me to stay strong in thescriptures, to finish the race,
(21:25):
and I am doing the same for eachand every one of you.
I'm praying for your well-being.
I'm praying that you getsomething out of this lesson and
that we continue to learntogether.
That is all for now, god bless.
