Welcome to Berean's Corner, the podcast where we go
through books of the Biblechapter by chapter and verse by
verse, wherever you are in theworld.
Thank you for joining.
Grab a glass of water, a cup ofcoffee or tea and let's get
into today's lesson.
All right, welcome back andthank you for joining me.

(00:34):
Open your bible to numbers, chapter 19.
The title of today's lesson isordinance of the red heifer
Numbers, chapter 19,.
And let's read.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Numbers 19.
The Lord said to Moses andAaron this is a requirement of
the law that the Lord hascommanded.
Tell the Israelites to bringyou a red heifer without defect
or blemish and that has neverbeen under a yoke.
Give it to Eleazar the priest.
It is to be taken outside thecamp and slaughtered in his

(01:08):
presence.
Then Eleazar the priest is totake some of its blood on his
finger and sprinkle it seventimes toward the front of the
tent of meeting While he watches.
The heifer is to be burned, itshide, flesh, blood and offal.
The priest is to take somecedar wood, hyssop and scarlet
wool and throw them unto theburning heifer.

(01:31):
After that the priest must washhis clothes and bathe himself
with water.
He may then come into the camp, but he will be ceremonially
unclean till evening.
The man who burns it must alsowash his clothes and bathe with
water, and he too will beunclean till evening.

(01:53):
A man who is clean shall gatherup the ashes of the heifer and
put them in a ceremonially cleanplace outside the camp.
They shall be kept by theIsraelite community for use in
the water of cleansing.
It is for purification from sin.
The man who gathers up theashes of the heifer must also
wash his clothes and he too willbe unclean till evening.

(02:16):
This will be a lastingordinance, both for the
Israelites and for the aliensliving among them.
Whoever touches the dead bodyof anyone will be unclean for
seven days.
He must purify himself with thewater on the third day and on
the seventh day.
Then he will be clean.
But if he does not purifyhimself on the third and seventh

(02:37):
days, he will not be clean.
Whoever touches the dead bodyof anyone and fails to purify
himself defiles the Lord'stabernacle.
That person must be cut offfrom Israel because the water of
cleansing has not beensprinkled on him.
He is unclean.
His uncleanness remains on him.

(02:58):
This is the law that applieswhen a person dies in a tent.
Anyone who enters the tent andanyone who is in it will be
unclean for seven days, andevery open container without a
lid fastened on it will beunclean.
Anyone out in the open whotouches someone who has been
killed with a sword or someonewho has died a natural death, or

(03:20):
anyone who touches a human boneor a grave will be unclean for
seven days.
For the unclean person, putsome ashes from the burned
purification offering into a jarand pour fresh water over them.
Then a man who is ceremoniallyclean is to take some hyssop,
dip it in the water and sprinklethe tent and all the

(03:42):
furnishings and the people whowere there, the water and
sprinkle the tent and all thefurnishings and the people who
were there.
He must also sprinkle anyonewho has touched a human bone or
a grave or someone who has beenkilled or someone who has died a
natural death.
The man who is clean is tosprinkle the unclean person on
the third and seventh days, andon the seventh day he is to
purify him.
The person being cleansed mustwash his clothes and bathe with

(04:06):
water and that evening he willbe clean.
But if a person who is uncleandoes not purify himself, he must
be cut off from the communitybecause he has defiled the
sanctuary of the Lord.
The water of cleansing has notbeen sprinkled on him and he is
unclean.
This is a lasting ordinance forthem.

(04:26):
The man who sprinkles the waterof cleansing must also wash his
clothes and anyone who touchesthe water of cleansing will be
unclean till evening.
Anything that an unclean persontouches becomes unclean and
anyone who touches it becomesunclean till evening okay now.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
The last time we were together we looked at the
duties of the levites and howserious they were to take the
sanctuary.
Today we are looking at thesacrifice of the red heifer, and
I have broken this chapter downinto two parts.
The first part, the ritual ofthe red heifer.
We see this in verses 1 through10.

(05:11):
Then the lord spoke to mosesand aaron, saying this is the
statute of the law, which thelord has commanded, saying,
excuse me, speak to the sons ofisrael that they bring you an
unblemished red heifer in whichis no defect and on which a yoke
has never been placed, and youshall give it to eleazar the

(05:34):
priest and it shall be broughtoutside the camp and be
slaughtered in his presence.
Next, eleazar the priest shalltake some of his blood with his
finger and sprinkle some of hisblood towards the front of the
tent of meeting seven times.
Then the heifer shall be burnedin his sight.
Its hide and its flesh and itsblood and its refuse shall be

(05:55):
burned and the priest shall takecedar wood and hyssop and
scarlet material and cast itinto the midst of the burning
heifer and scarlet material andcast it into the midst of the
burning heifer.
The priest shall then wash hisclothes and bathe his body in
water and afterward come intothe camp.
But the priest shall be uncleanuntil evening.
The one who burns it shall alsowash his clothes in water and

(06:18):
bathe his body in water andshall be unclean until evening.
Now a man who is clean shouldgather up the ashes of the
heifer and deposit them outsidethe camp in a clean place, and
the congregation of the sons ofIsrael shall keep it as water to
remove impurity.
It is purification from sin,and the one who gathers the

(06:39):
ashes of the heifer shall washhis clothes and be unclean until
evening, and it shall be aperpetual statute to the sons of
israel and to the alien whosojourns among them.
In verse one we see who thelord is speaking to.
Then the lord spoke to mosesand aaron.
Like always, I like to pointout who the lord is speaking to.

(07:00):
So when we see these verses, when we see things happening, we
don't get confused on who thisis talking about.
In verse two, the word redHebrew 122, adam or either Adam,
not like, not like Adam, likeAdam or man.

(07:21):
But Adam means ruddy, so thisred heifer was a ruddy
complexion, meaning that it was.
It didn't have red fur, but itreally was more of a reddish
brown.
You know how it describes Davidas being a man who was ruddy.
What it mean was is that Davidwas a brown-skinned man who had

(07:42):
red undertones.
You know, you could kind of seethe the you know the red under
him, or maybe even see the red alittle flush under his his, uh,
slightly brown skin.
Well, that's the same thingwith this.
You know, red heifer.
This red heifer was a is moreof a reddish brown color.
In verse three, eliezer had totake the heifer outside the camp

(08:05):
to do this red heifer cleansing.
Now let's see how this connectsto the Lord Jesus, because
there is a connection there.
Hold your finger right here andgo to Hebrews, chapter nine.
Hebrews, hebrews, chapter 9.

(08:26):
Alright, I'm there.
Hebrews, chapter 9, and look atverse 13, for if the blood of
goats and bulls and ashes of aheifer sprinkling those who have
been defiled sanctified for thecleansing of the flesh, kind of

(08:50):
talking about this is talkingabout the old and the new
covenant.
So this is what they did then.
Jesus was our sacrifice in thenew covenant.
This was the sacrifice in oldcovenant.
Turn right there, still stay inhebrews and go to chapter 13,
chapter 13, and notice verse 12.

(09:10):
Therefore, jesus also that hemight sanctify the people
through his blood sufferedoutside the gate, did you?
Did you remember how they hadto take the red heifer outside
of the gate?
Then in hebrews, you see howjesus suffered outside the gate.
I'm just showing you thecorrelation between the old
covenant and the new covenant.

(09:31):
Now we will move on to thesecond part, the water
purification.
Back in numbers 19, we arelooking at verses 11 through 22.
The one who touches the corpseof any person shall be unclean
for seven days.
Pretty straightforward, thatone shall purify himself from
uncleanness with the water onthe third day the water we
talked about earlier and on theseventh day, and then he shall

(09:54):
be clean.
But if he does not purifyhimself on the third and on the
seventh day, he shall be unclean.
These are the type of ritualsthat they had to go through.
Verse 13 anyone who touches acorpse, the body of a man who
has died, and does not purifyhimself, defiles the tabernacle
of the lord and that personshall be cut off from israel
because the water for impuritywas not sprinkled on him.

(10:15):
He shall be unclean.
His uncleanness is still on him.
This is the law.
When a man dies in a tent, everyone who comes into the tent
and everyone who is in the tentshall be unclean for seven days
.
And every open vessel which hasno covering tied down on it
shall be unclean, meaning thatthe things that they were using

(10:37):
their paws, they had.
They had to be tied down, notjust left open or left loose.
I'm sorry, verse 16.
Also, anyone who is in the openfield touches one who has been
slain with a sword or who hasdied naturally, or a human bone

(10:58):
or a grave, shall be unclean forseven days.
So this even goes when you'reout in the field.
When you're out in the field, then for the unclean person they
shall take some of the ashes ofthe burnt, purification from
sin and flowing water shall beadded to them in a vessel and a
clean person shall take hyssopand dip it in the water and
sprinkle it on the tent and allthe furnishings and on the

(11:21):
persons who were there and onthe one who touched the bone or
the one slain or the one dyingnaturally of the grave.
Then the clean person shallsprinkle on the unclean on the
third day and on the seventh day, and on the seventh day, he
shall purify him fromuncleanness and he shall wash

(11:42):
his clothes and bathe himself inwater and shall be clean by
evening.
This is the way that they hadto do it in the old covenant,
and he shall wash his clothesand bathe himself in water and
shall be clean by evening.
This is the way that they hadto do it in the old covenant.
Now, thank you, we all thankthe Lord Jesus that we don't
have to go through the samerituals that Israel did, verse
20.
But the man who is unclean anddoes not purify himself from
uncleanness, that person shallbe cut off from the midst of the

(12:03):
assembly because he has defiledthe sanctuary of the Lord.
The water for impurity has notbeen sprinkled on him.
He is unclean.
So it shall be a perpetualstatute for them, and he who
sprinkles the water for impurityshall wash his clothes, and he
who touches the water forimpurity shall be unclean until
evening.
Furthermore, anything that theunclean person touches shall be

(12:25):
unclean, and thean personTouches shall be unclean, and
the person who touches it shallbe unclean Until evening.
That's very self Inspiratorythat this man Is unclean.
He's walking through the camp hewent to.
You know where someone is, youknow, you know roasting the meat
and he touches, you know, thelittle, the little turning, the
little turning roasting thingwhatever you want to call it

(12:47):
that they were using.
Or he goes and you know, hepicks up your vessel water and
gets him a drink of water, or hegoes your tent just to come by
to say hey to you.
All of those things are uncleanbecause he's unclean.
So that means you have to takethe, you know the little, their
little barbecue thing.
You have to take that vesselwater, you have to go to the
tent and you would have topurify those things because the
man who was unclean touchedthose things and he has made

(13:09):
those things unclean now.
This was the way that Israelhad to do things in the old
covenant to be clean, becausethis is what the Lord commanded
and this is what had to be done.
All right, people.
That brings us to the end ofnumbers, chapter 19.
