into today's lesson.
Welcome back and thank you forjoining me.
(00:33):
Open your Bible to Numbers, chapter 20.
The title of today's lesson isDeath of Miriam.
Also in this chapter, we aretalking about the waters of
Meribah and the death of AaronMoses.
Excuse me, numbers, chapter 20,and let's read.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Numbers 20.
In the first month the wholeIsraelite community arrived at
the desert of Zin and theystayed at Kadesh.
There Miriam died and wasburied.
There, miriam died and wasburied and there was no water
for the community.
And the people gathered inopposition to Moses and Aaron.
They quarreled with Moses andsaid If only we had died when
(01:14):
our brothers fell down beforethe Lord.
Why did you bring the Lord'scommunity into this desert that
we and our livestock should diehere?
Why did you bring us up out ofEgypt to this terrible place?
It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates and
there's no water to drink.
(01:35):
Moses and Aaron went from theassembly to the entrance, to the
tent of meeting, and fell facedown and the glory of the Lord
appeared to them.
The Lord said to Moses take thestaff and you and your brother
Aaron, gather the assemblytogether.
Speak to that rock before theireyes and it will pour out its
water.
You will bring water out of therock for the community so they
(01:56):
and their livestock can drink.
So Moses took the staff fromthe Lord's presence, just as he
commanded him.
He and Aaron gathered theassembly together in front of
the rock and Moses said to themListen, you rebels, must we
bring you water out of this rock?
Then Moses raised his arm andstruck the rock twice with his
(02:17):
staff.
Water gushed out and thecommunity and their livestock
drank.
But the Lord said to Moses andAaron Because you did not trust
in me enough to honor me as holyin the sight of the Israelites,
you will not bring thiscommunity into the land I give
them.
These were the waters ofMeribah, where the Israelites
(02:40):
quarreled with the Lord andwhere he showed himself holy
among them.
Moses sent messengers fromKadesh to the king of Edom
saying this is what your brotherIsrael says.
You know about all thehardships that have come upon us
.
Our forefathers went down intoEgypt and we lived there many
years.
The Egyptians mistreated us andour fathers, but when we cried
(03:03):
out to the Lord, the Egyptiansmistreated us and our fathers.
But when we cried out to theLord, he heard our cry.
He sent an angel and brought usout of Egypt.
Now we are here at Kadesh, atown on the edge of your
territory.
Please let us pass through yourcountry.
We will not go through anyfield or vineyard or drink water
from any well.
We will travel along the king'shighway and not turn to the
(03:26):
right or to the left until wehave passed through your
territory.
But Edom answered you may notpass through here.
If you try, we will march outand attack you with the sword.
The Israelites replied we willgo along the main road and if we
or our livestock drink any ofyour water, we will pay for it.
We only want to pass through onfoot, nothing else.
(03:47):
Again, they answered you maynot pass through.
Then Edom came out against themwith a large and powerful army.
Since Edom refused to let themgo through their territory,
israel turned away from them.
The whole Israelite communityset out from Kadesh and came to
Mount Hor.
At Mount Hor, near the borderof Edom, the Lord said to Moses
(04:10):
and Aaron Aaron will be gatheredto his people.
He will not enter the land Igive the Israelites because both
of you rebelled against mycommand at the waters of Meribah
.
Get Aaron and his son Eliezerand take them up Mount Hor.
Remove Aaron's garments and putthem on his son Eliezer, for
Aaron will be gathered to hispeople, he will die there.
(04:31):
Moses did as the Lord commanded.
They went up to Mount Hor inthe sight of the whole community
.
Moses removed Aaron's garmentsand put them on his son Eliezer.
And Aaron died there on top ofthe mountain.
Then Moses and Eliezer camedown from the mountain and when
the whole community learned thatAaron had died, the entire
(05:01):
house of Israel mourned for him30 days Now.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
The last time we were
together we looked at the
sacrifices that had to be madevia the red heifer.
In this chapter, moses willlose two siblings Miriam, his
sister, and Aaron, his brother.
Every one of us has lostsomeone we cared about deeply.
It can be a hard timeemotionally and spiritually, but
here Moses will lose two peoplevery close to him.
(05:24):
Back to back.
Now we have taken this chapterand broken it down into five
parts.
Part number one, just in caseyou excuse me.
Part number one Miriam passesaway.
We notice this in verse one.
Then the sons of Israel, thewhole congregation, came to the
(05:44):
wilderness of Zin in the firstmonth and the people stayed at
Kadesh.
Now, miriam died there and wasburied there.
Just in case you forgot, miriamwas the sister who cared for
Moses when his mother put him inthe water to save his life.
Just to remind us of that, holdyour finger here and go back
left in your Bible to Exodus, exodus, chapter 2, and we will
(06:11):
get a.
We will get a refresher on this, on this event.
Exodus, chapter 2.
We are looking in verses 4 to 9.
Exodus 2 4 to nine and hissister.
This is talking about.
Moses stood at a distance tofind out what would happen to
him.
Then the daughter of pharaohcame down to breathe that excuse
(06:32):
me came down to bathe at thenow with her matings walking
alongside the now, and she sawthe basket among the reeds and
sent her maid and she brought itto her.
When she opened it she saw thechild and behold, the boy was
crying and she had pity on himand said this is one of the
hebrews children.
Then his sister this will bemiriam said to pharaoh's
(06:53):
daughter shall I go and call anurse for you from the hebrew
women that she may nurse thechild for you?
And pharaoh's daughter said toher go ahead.
So the girl went and called thechild's mother.
Then pharaoh's daughter said toher go ahead.
So the girl went and called thechild's mother.
Then Pharaoh's daughter said toher take this child away and
nurse him for me and I shallgive you your wages.
So the woman took the child andnursed him.
(07:13):
Now I believe Miriam was aboutnine to 12 years older than
Moses.
You know around the time thesethings happen, so she's a little
bit older than Moses.
You know around the time thesethings happen, so she's a little
bit older than Moses.
Part two the people are stillgrumbling and God provides water
.
We see this in verses twothrough six.
(07:34):
There was no water for thecongregation and they assembled
themselves against Moses andAaron.
Doesn't this sound familiar?
The people thus contended withMoses and spoke, saying if only
we had perished when ourbrothers perished before the
Lord.
Why then have you brought theLord's assembly into this
(07:55):
wilderness for us and our beastto die here, and why have you
made us come up from Egypt theythey still talking about egypt
to bring us into this wretchedplace?
It is not a place of grain orfigs, or vines or pomegranates,
nor is there water to drink.
Then moses and aaron came infrom the presence of the
(08:15):
assembly to the dory of the tentof meeting and fell on their
faces.
Then the glory of the lordappeared to them.
Now I I really okay.
You know I've said this a lotof times and it's beginning to
be a broken record that theseIsraelites, you know, are not
grateful people.
These people do not realizewhat the Lord has done for them
yet and still they don't sitback, they don't wait to see.
(08:38):
Listen, we're thirsty, we'rehungry.
Let's see what the Lord does.
He's done all of these miraclesEvery since he brought up, ever
since we were in Egypt, to showhow he was going to bring us
out, and ever since he broughtus out of the land of Egypt, he
has done all of these things toprovide for us.
Yet, and still, these peopleare still grumbling and, as I
always mention, what they'redoing is they're taking it out
(09:00):
on the people they can see, moses and Aaron.
What they really are doing isthey're really complaining to
the Lord.
They're just acting likethey're complaining to Moses and
Aaron.
Let's move on to part three, thewaters of Meribah.
We see this in verses 7 through13.
The lord spoke to moses, sayingtake the rod and you and your
(09:20):
brother aaron, assemble thecongregation and speak to the
rock before their eyes that itmay yield its water.
You shall thus bring forthwater from them, out of the rock
, and yet the congregation andtheir beasts and let excuse me
and let the congregation andtheir beasts drink.
So the lord is about to provideyet another miracle in front of
these people.
So Moses took the rod frombefore the Lord, just as he had
(09:42):
commanded him, and Moses andAaron gathered the assembly
before the rock and he said tothem listen now, you rebels.
Shall we bring forth water foryou out of this rock?
Now, that's the question thatMoses is asking them, and I love
the fact that he called themrebels, because that is exactly
what they're being they'rerebellion.
They're rebelling against theLord.
Then Moses lifted up his handand struck the rock twice with
(10:04):
his rod and water came forthabundantly and the congregation
and their beasts drank.
So the Lord made a waterfallcome out of this rock.
But the Lord said to Moses andAaron because you have not
believed me to treat me as holyin the sight of the sons of
Israel, therefore you shall notbring this assembly into the
land which I have given them.
(10:25):
Those were the waters ofMeribah, because the sons of
Israel contended with the Lordand he provided excuse me, and
he proved himself holy amongthem.
Notice what it said.
It said that they contendedwith the lord, because that's
exactly what they did.
They didn't believe in the lordand they didn't believe in the
things that lord done had donefor them.
They are still contending withthe lord.
(10:46):
We move on to part four.
Israel faces an obstacle.
The king of edom of edom wouldnot let them pass through.
We see this in verses 14through 22, now from Kadesh.
Moses then sent messengers tothe king of Edom.
Thus, your brothers, israel hassaid you know all the hardships
(11:07):
that has befallen us that ourfathers went down to Egypt and
we stayed in Egypt a long timeand the Egyptians treated us and
our fathers badly.
But when we cried out to theLord, he heard our voice and
sent an angel and brought us outfrom Egypt.
Now, behold, we are at Kadesh, atown on the edge of your
territory.
Please let us pass through yourland.
(11:29):
We shall not pass through fieldor through vineyard.
We shall not even drink waterfrom a well field or through
vineyard.
We shall not even drink waterfrom a well.
We shall go along the king'shighway, not turning to the
right or left, until we passthrough your territory.
I'm gonna stop right there fora second.
So israel has sent messengersahead to let the king of edom
know that we are coming to yourterritory.
(11:50):
This is how people did things.
Listen, people.
You cannot go to a foreign landand just do what you want to do
.
You cannot just come up and gothrough there.
You have to send word to theofficials, word to the
authorities.
We are going to come in to yourland, but we want your
permission first, and they areletting him know we listen,
we're not coming through here.
We're not taking any burden offof your people.
(12:11):
We won't turn to the right orthe left.
What are saying?
They're saying like we're notgoing to be looking around.
Our eyes are not going to getbig.
We're not going to be lookingat your vineyards, we're not
going to be looking at yourcornfields, your rice fields,
your grain fields won't eat ortake in anything.
We're not even going to drinkyour water.
We just want to go through theking's highway.
Now, the king's highway wouldhave been a smooth ride.
You got to understand back inthose that would have been the
(12:33):
kind of the equivalent of ourfreeways in this time.
The King's Highway would havebeen a road that was, that was,
a free of of bushes and weedsand more likely even grass,
because it was, you know, treaded upon by horses and foot,
and it was a smooth road thatgot you from one place to the
next.
Picking it back up at verse 18,eden, however, said to him you
(12:58):
shall not pass through us lest Icome out with the sword against
you.
So Edom is already saying yeah,I'm hearing what you're saying,
but the answer is no.
Again, the sons of Israel saidto him we shall go up by the
highway and if I and mylivestock do drink any of your
water, then I will pay its price.
Let me only pass through onfeet, nothing else.
But he said this is Edom again, you shall not pass through.
(13:18):
And Edom came out against himwith a heavy force and with a
strong hand.
Thus Edom refused to allowIsrael to pass through his
territory, so Israel turned awayfrom him.
Now, when they set out fromKadesh, the sons of Israel, the
whole congregation, came toMount Hor.
So where they were trying toget to, they want to pass
through Edom, but the king ofEdom said absolutely not.
(13:40):
And he sent out his army to letthem know that that was not
going to happen.
Now that they are turning, they're going to Mount Hor.
We will move on to part 5, whichis the death of Aaron.
We see this in verses 23through 29.
Then the Lord spoke to Mosesand Aaron at Mount Hor, by the
border of the land of Edom, saying Aaron shall be gathered
(14:00):
to his people.
If any of you forgot, that is aterm that means that you are
about to die, for he shall notenter the land which I have
given to the sons of Israelbecause he, excuse me, because
you rebelled against my commandat the waters of Meribah.
Take Aaron and his sons, eliezer, and bring them up to
Mount Hor and strip Aaron of hisgarments and put them on his
(14:24):
son, eliezer.
So Aaron will be gathered tohis people and will die there.
So Moses did just as the Lordhad commanded and they went up
to Mount Hor in the sight of allthe congregation.
The Lord had commanded and theywent up to Mount Hor in the
sight of all the congregation, and after Moses had stripped
Aaron of his garments and putthem on his son Eliezer, aaron
died there on the mountaintop.
Then Moses and Eliezer camedown from the mountain and when
(14:48):
all the congregation saw thatAaron had died, all the house of
Israel wept for Aaron 30 days.
Now it's very understandablethat this would be a sad moment.
It's very sad for Moses becausenot too long before this he
loses his big sister in Miriam.
Now he loses his big brotherand really his right hand, the
(15:09):
one who did the speaking for himin Aaron, and the people would
have been sad because they havebeen traveling.
They have all been a group fora long time.
Aaron was a major part of thisgroup, and now Aaron is no more.
Now, one thing I will say aboutAaron's death is is that how
lucky is he to know when histime is to go?
(15:29):
Yes, death is a very sad thing, but when you know you're going
to be with the Lord, it takesthe sadness away.
Aaron is told, unlike a lot ofus, we don't know the day or the
time.
Really none of us do.
But the Lord knows all and Ithink that this is a a this is a
uh, a gracious thing that theLord is doing by letting Aaron
(15:51):
know that his time is up.
It gives him it actually giveshim a time to say one last
goodbye to his sons and to Moses, the ones who took him up on
the mountain.
You know, maybe I kind of alwayswonder about things like this.
Maybe they reminisce going upon that mountain, maybe they
talked about, you know, the oldtimes, or remember when the Lord
brought us up out of Egypt.
I mean, you know, man, I can'twait to tell these stories to
the next generation.
All the things he did, all themiracles that he caused in Egypt
(16:14):
, how he rescued us and saved us.
And then you get on top of themountain, you take off your
priestly garments, your brotherMoses puts them on your son, and
then you lay down, you cover upand you breathe your last.
That is the way that a lot ofus would want to go.
I mean, I would love to go thatway.
I would love to go in my oldage knowing that two days from
(16:37):
now is my last day.
Hey, when you?
It's a two-day.
I'm just using an example.
It's a two-day journey to getto the top of that mountain and
when you get up there, you'regoing to breathe your last.
That's how Aaron went out, andnow Moses, out of his siblings
and his family, will be the onlyone left, and we will pick it
up the next time when we jumpinto numbers chapter 21.
(16:57):
All right, that brings us tothe end of numbers, chapter 20.
