Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Berean's Corner, the podcast where we go
through books of the Biblechapter by chapter and verse by
verse.
Wherever you are in the world, thank you for joining.
Grab a glass of water, a cup ofcoffee or tea and let's thank
you for joining me.
It is a beautiful day to getinto the Lord's word.

(00:35):
Open up your Bible to Numbers, chapter 21.
As we continue today, we arelooking at Erad, concord,
numbers, chapter 21, and let'sread Numbers 21.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the
Negev, heard that Israel wascoming along the road to Atharim
, he attacked the Israelites andcaptured some of them.
Then Israel made this vow tothe Lord If you will deliver
these people into our hands, wewill totally destroy their
cities.
The Lord listened to Israel'splea and gave the Canaanites

(01:11):
over to them.
They completely destroyed themand their towns.
So the place was named Hormah.
They traveled from Mount Horalong the route to the Red Sea
to go around Edom.
But the people grew impatienton the way.
They spoke against God andagainst Moses and said why have
you brought us up out of Egyptto die in the desert?

(01:32):
There is no bread, there is nowater, and we detest this
miserable food.
Then the Lord sent venomoussnakes among them.
They bit the people and manyIsraelites died.
The people came to Moses andsaid we sinned when we spoke
against the Lord and against you.
Pray that the Lord will takethe snakes away from us.

(01:54):
So Moses prayed for the people.
The Lord said to Moses Make asnake, put it up on a pole.
Anyone who is bitten can lookat it and live.
So Moses made a bronze snakeand put it up on a pole.
Then when anyone was bitten bya snake and looked at the bronze

(02:23):
snake, he lived.
The Israelites moved on andcamped at Oboth.
Then they sent out from Obothand camped in Ai Abarim, in the
desert that faces Moab, towardthe sunrise.
From there they moved on andcamped in the Zered Valley.
They set out from there andcamped alongside the Arnon,
which is in the desert, extending into Amorite territory
.
The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

(02:47):
That is why the book of thewars of the Lord says Waheb in
Suphah and the ravines, theArnon and the slopes of the
ravines that led to the site ofAr and lie along the border of
Moab.
From there they continued on toBeir, the well, where the Lord
said to Moses Gather the peopletogether and I will give them

(03:10):
water.
Then Israel sang this songSpring up O well.
Sing about it, about the wellthat the princes dug, that the
nobles of the people sank thenobles with scepters and staffs.
Then they went from the desertto Matanah, from Matanah to
Nahaliel, from Nahaliel toBarmoth and from Barmoth to the

(03:33):
valley in Moab where the top ofPisgah overlooks the wasteland.
Israel sent messengers to say toSion, king of the Amorites, let
us pass through your country.
We will not turn aside into anyfield or vineyard or drink
water from any well.
We will travel along the king'shighway until we have passed

(03:53):
through your territory.
But Sion would not let Israelpass through his territory.
He mustered his entire army andmarched out into the desert
against Israel.
Mustered his entire army andmarched out into the desert
against Israel.
When he reached Jehaz, hefought with Israel.
Israel, however, put him to thesword and took over his land

(04:14):
from the Arnon to the Jabbok, but only as far as the Ammonites
, because their border wasfortified.
Israel captured all the citiesof the Amorites and occupied
them, including Heshbon and allits surrounding settlements.
Heshbon was the city of Sion, king of the Amorites, who had
fought against the former kingof Moab and had taken from him
all his land, as far as theArnon.

(04:34):
That is why the poets say cometo Heshbon and let it be rebuilt
, let Sion's city be restored.
Fire went out from Heshbon, ablaze from the city of Sion.
It consumed Ar of Moab, thecitizens of Arnon's heights.
Woe to you, o Moab.
You are destroyed.
O people of Chemosh.
He has given up his sons asfugitives and his daughters as

(04:58):
captives to Sion, king of theAmorites.
But we have overthrown them.
Heshbon is destroyed all theway to Dabon.
We have demolished them as faras Nofar, which extends to
Medeba.
So Israel settled in the land ofthe Amorites.
After Moses had sent spies toGezer, the Israelites captured

(05:19):
its surrounding settlements anddrove out the Amorites who were
there.
Then they turned and went upalong the road toward Bashan,
and Og, king of Bashan, and hiswhole army, marched out to meet
them in battle.
At Edre, the Lord said to MosesDo not be afraid of them, for I
have handed him over to youwith his whole army and his land

(05:41):
.
Do to him what you did to sign.
King of the Amorites whoreigned in Heshpen.
So they struck him down, together with his sons and his
whole army, leaving them nosurvivors, and they took
possession of his land.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Now.
The last time we were together,we looked at the death of
Moses' siblings, miriam andAaron.
Today we're looking at how thisnext generation of Israelites
are not serious about God in thesame way the generation before
them was.
Now there are three subjects inthis chapter.
There is Arad being conquered, which is the title of this

(06:20):
lesson.
There's also the bronze serpent, and there is also the two
victories that we will talkabout and discuss, and we will
break this chapter down intofive parts.
Part one the people are given avictory by God.
We see this in verses onethrough three, verses one
through three of numbers 21.

(06:41):
When the Canaanite, the king ofArad, who lived in the Negev,
heard that Israel was coming bythe way of at the ring, then he
fought against Israel and tooksome of them captive.
So Israel made a vow to theLord and said if thou would
indeed deliver this people intomy hand, then I will utterly
destroy their cities.

(07:03):
And the Lord heard the voice ofIsrael and delivered up the
Canaanites.
Then they utterly destroyedthem and their cities.
Thus the name of the place wascalled Hormah.
This seems to be a good youknow, a good moment of momentum
for Israel, now, after all thatthey have been through, they now
have a victory that the Lordhas given them.

(07:23):
They asked the Lord for thevictory and the Lord lord
delivered, which brings us topart two, the bronze serpent.
We see this in verses fourthrough nine.
Then they set out from mount horby the way of the red sea to go
around the land of edom and thepeople became impatient because
of the journey.

(07:44):
And the people spoke againstGod and Moses why have you
brought us up out of Egypt todie in the wilderness?
For there is no food and nowater and we loathe this
miserable food.
The Lord sent fiery serpentsamong the people and they bit
the people so that many ofIsrael died.
So the people came to Moses andsaid we have sinned because we

(08:05):
have spoken against the Lord, and you intercede with the Lord
that he may remove the serpentsfrom us.
And Moses interceded for thepeople.
Then the Lord said to Mosesmake a fiery serpent and set it
on a standard, and it shall comeabout that everyone who is
bitten when he looks at it, heshall live.
And Moses made a bronze serpentand set it on the standard and

(08:29):
it came about that if a serpentbit any man.
When he looked to the bronzeserpent, he lived.
Now, jesus cited this passageabout himself.
Matter of fact, let's uh, lookat that real quick.
Hold, quick, hold your fingerright here and go to John,
chapter 3, john, chapter 3.

(08:49):
And when you get to johnchapter 3, if you're there, we
are looking at verse 14.
This is jesus speaking as moseslifted up the serpent in the
wilderness.
Even so, must the son of man belifted up?
Now, what is interesting is that, years later, israel was

(09:11):
worshiping this bronze serpent, this bronze serpent that moses
made, and hezekiah the kingdestroyed it.
Go to 2 Kings.
Let's look at that.
2 Kings, chapter 18.

(09:32):
2 Kings, chapter 18, and we arelooking at verse 4.
He removed this is aboutHezekiah.
He removed the high places andbroke down the sacred pillars
and cut down the Asherah.
He also broke in pieces thebronze serpent that Moses had
made, for until those days, thesons of Israel burned incense to
it and it was called Nehushtim.

(09:53):
So we see the Israel was evenworshiping this thing.
It also reminds me of thepassage in Romans, where the
people were doing this samething.
Hold your finger back atNumbers 21 and go to Romans,
romans, chapter 1.
When you get there and we willsee it's mentioned there romans

(10:19):
chapter.
Romans, chapter 1, and we arelooking at verse 25, for they
exchanged the truth of god for alie, and worship and serve the
creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever.
Amen.
So that's what these peoplewere doing they were worshiping.

(10:40):
Instead of worshiping of thecreator, they were worshiping
the things that was created.
Now we will move on to partthree.
Back here.
In numbers 21, israel gets to,moving towards moab.
We see this in verses 10 to 20.
Now, the sons of israel movedout and camped in Oboth and they
journeyed from Oboth and campedin Ayyabarin, in the wilderness

(11:02):
which is opposite Moab, to theeast.
From there they set out andcamped in Wadah Zered.
From there they journeyed andcamped on the other side of the
Arnon, which is in thewilderness that comes out of the
border of the Amorites, for theArnon is the border of Moab,
between the border of theAmorites.
For the R9 is the border ofMoab, between Moab and the
Amorites.
Therefore, it is said in thebook of the war of the Lord

(11:25):
Rahab, in Shaphat and Wadash inR9, and the slope of the Wadash
that extends to the site of Arand leans to the border of Moab,
and from there they continue tobear.
That is where the Lord said toMoses assemble the people that I
may give them water.
Then Israel sang this songspring up, oh well, sing to it.

(11:49):
The well which the leaders, which the leaders sank, which
the nobles of the people digwith the scepter and with their
staffs, and from the wildernessthey continue to Methanein, and
from Methanein to Nahalael, andfrom Nahalael to Batmoth, and
from Batmoth to the valley thatis in the land of Moab, at the
top of Pisgah, which overlooksthe wasteland.

(12:13):
So Israel is doing some movinghere.
They got some momentum aboutthem.
They fell off again with theircomplaining.
The Lord sent the fieryserpents.
The Lord sent them, like theLord always does for us.
He sent them a means of escape,a means of peace and a means of
healing.
And now they are on the move, which brings us to part four.
Israel gets two victories.

(12:33):
The first was against theAmorites.
We see this in verses 21through 32.
Then Israel sent messengers toShahan, king of the Amorites,
saying let me pass through yourland.
We will not turn off into thefield or vineyards, we will not
drink water from wells, we willgo by the king's highway until

(12:54):
we have passed through yourborder.
But but Shahan would not permitIsrael to pass through the
border.
So Shahan gathered all hispeople and went out and gathered
excuse me against Israel in thewilderness and came to Jahaz
and fought against Israel.
Then Israel struck him with theedge of the sword and took
possession of his land from theArnon to the Jadak, as far as

(13:15):
the sons of Ammon, for theborder of the sons of amman was
jazer.
And israel took all thesecities and israel lived in all
the cities of the amorites inhis bond and in all her villages
, for his bond was the city ofshahan, king of the amorites,
who have fought against theformer king of moab and had
taken all his land out of hishand as far as our nine.

(13:37):
I want to stop right there realquick and point out something
you know.
You hear a lot of times peopletalk about land being stolen.
That is absolutely not true.
What happens is is that peopleconquer a people and then they
take a land.
I don't care what land it is onthese seven continents, the
land was not stolen.
What happened is is thatsomeone comes along and they
take the land and conquer thepeople who are there.

(13:58):
The people who were therebefore they conquered the people
before them and took the land, and the people before that
conquered the people before themand took the land, and it goes
on and on.
Reading this made me think aboutthat.
That that's how land isacquired.
Someone comes along, theyconquer it and they and that's
how the land becomes someoneelse's possession pick it back
up in verse 27.

(14:19):
Therefore, those who useproverbs say come to heshbon,
let it be built.
So let the city of shahan beestablished.
For a fire went forth fromheshbon, a flame from the town
of shahan.
It devoured our of moab thedominant heights.
Heist of Arnon.
Woe to you, o Moab.

(14:39):
You are ruined.
O people of Shemesh, he hasgiven his sons as fugitives and
his daughters into captivity toan Ammonite king, excuse me, the
Amorite king, shahan, but wehave cast them down.
Heshbon is ruined as far asDibon.
Then we have laid waste even toNafar, which reaches to Medabai

(15:03):
.
Thus, israel lived in the landof the Amorites and Moses sent
to spy out Jazeer and theycaptured his villages and
dispossessed the Amorites whowere there villages and
dispossessed the Amorites whowere there.
So we see they moving on andmore land is is more land is

(15:24):
being conquered, which brings usto the fifth part, the second
victory.
Now, this one was againstBashan.
We see this in verses 33through 35.
Then they turned and went up bythe way of Bashan and Og, the
king of Bashan, went out withall his people for the battle of
Idra.
But the Lord said to Moses donot fear him, for I have given

(15:46):
him into your hand and all hispeople and his land, and you
shall do to him as you did toShahan, king of the Amorites,
who lived in Hezbollah.
So they killed him and his sonsand all his people until there
was no remnant left him and theypossessed his land.
Once again, we see whathappened.
They went in and they did theland, not to mention that the

(16:08):
Lord gave this into their hand.
Now Moses speaks of this battle.
You know he speaks of thisbattle and the land in the
future.
Since we're at the end of thischapter, just go to the right in
your Bible a little bit.
Let's look at that right now.
Go to Deuteronomy, chapterthree.
There we go and we can look atthis right now, deuteronomy

(16:32):
chapter three.
I am looking at verses onethrough eight, deuteronomy three
, one through eight.
Then we turn and went up theroad to Bashan and all King of
Bashan, with all his people, came out to meet us in battle at
Adri.
But the Lord said to me do notfear him, for I have delivered
him, with all his people, cameout to meet us in battle at Adra
.
But the Lord said to me do notfear him, for I have delivered
him and all his people and hisland into your hand, and you

(16:53):
shall go to do just as you didto Shahan, king of the Amorites,
who lived in Heshbon.
So the Lord, our God, deliveredOg, also king of Bashan, with
all his people, into our handand we smoked them until no
survivor was left and wecaptured all his cities.
At that time, there was not acity which we did not take from
them.
Sixty cities, all the region ofArgog, the kingdom of Og and

(17:19):
Bashan.
All these were cities fortified, with high walls, gates and and
bars, besides a great manyunwalled towns, and we utterly
destroyed them, as we did toshahan, king of heshbon, utterly
destroying the men, women andchildren of every city, but all
the animals and the spoils ofthe cities we took as our booty.

(17:41):
Thus, we took the land at thattime from the hand of the two
kings of the Amorites who werebeyond the Jordan, from the
valley of Arnon to Mount Hermon, drop down to verse 11.
For only our king of Bashan wasleft of the remnant of the
Raphaim.
Behold, his bedstead was aniron bedstead.

(18:05):
It is in Rabbi of the sons ofamman.
Its length was nine cubits andit's with four cubits by
ordinary cubits.
So we see later on that mosesalso speaks on this battle.
Okay, that brings us to the endof numbers, chapter 21.
