Speaker 2 (00:58):
While israel was staying in shittim, the men
began to indulge in sexualimmorality with Moabite women
who invited them to thesacrifices to their gods.
The people ate and bowed downbefore these gods.
So Israel joined in worshipingthe Baal of Peor and the Lord's
anger burned against them.

(01:19):
The Lord said to Moses Take allthe leaders of these people,
kill them and expose them inbroad daylight before the Lord,
so that the Lord's fierce angermay turn away from Israel.
So Moses said to Israel'sjudges Each of you must put to
death those of your men who havejoined in worshipping the Baal

(01:41):
of Peor joined in worshippingthe Baal of Peor.
Then an Israelite man broughtto his family a Midianite woman,
right before the eyes of Mosesand the whole assembly of Israel
, while they were weeping at theentrance to the tent of meeting
.
When Phinehas, son of Eliezer, the son of Aaron, the priest,
saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand and

(02:03):
followed the Israelite into thetent.
He drove the spear through bothof them, through the Israelite
and into the woman's body.
Then the plague against theIsraelites was stopped.
But those who died in the plaguenumbered 24,000.
The Lord said to Moses Phanehas, son of Eleazar, the son of

(02:26):
Aaron.
The priest, has turned my angeraway from the Israelites, for
he was as zealous as I am for myhonor among them, so that in my
zeal I did not put an end tothem.
Therefore, tell him I am makingmy covenant of peace with him.
He and his descendants willhave a covenant of a lasting
priesthood, because he waszealous for the honor of his God

(02:49):
and made atonement for theIsraelites.
The name of the Israelite whowas killed with the Midianite
woman was Zemri, son of Salu, the leader of a Seminite family,
and the name of the Midianitewoman who was put to death was
Cosbi, daughter of Zur, a tribalchief of a Midianite family.

(03:12):
The Lord said to Moses Treatthe Midianites as enemies and
kill them, because they treatedyou as enemies when they
deceived you in the affair ofPeor and their sister, cosby,
the daughter of a Midianiteleader, the woman who was killed
when the plague came as aresult of Peor now.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
The last time we were together, we looked at the
conclusion of the relationshipbetween Balak and Balaam.
Balak took Balaam to the top ofPeor to look down on the
children of Israel in hope thatBalaam would see something that
would make him change his mind.
Instead, he blessed them.
Balaam was done with Peor, butPeor wasn't done with Israel.

(04:01):
Now I want to touch on Balaamagain before we move on to
israel.
The old testament is not theonly place where balaam is
looked at unfavorably in the newtestament.
Peter touched on him in secondpeter.
So hold your spot right hereand turn to second p, peter,

(04:25):
sorry about that.
Turn to 2nd Peter, chapter 2,and when you get there we are
going to look at verses 14 to 16.
2nd Peter 2, verses 14 to 16.
Having eyes full of adulterythat never cease from sin,
enticing unstable souls, havinga heart trained in greed or

(04:48):
cursed children forsaken theright excuse me, forsaken the
right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of
balaam, the son of beor, wholoved the wages of
unrighteousness, but he receiveda rebuke for his own
transgression, for a dumb donkeyspeaking with a voice of a man
restrained.
The madness of the prophet Judealso spoke to him.

(05:10):
So go to your Bible a couple ofmore chapters to the right, and
then go to the book of Jude, ifyou had Jude.
We are looking at verses sevento eleven.
Looking at verses 7 to 11, justas sodom and gomorrah and the
cities around them since they,in the same way as these,
indulge the gross immorality andwent after strange flesh are

(05:31):
exhibited as an example inundergoing the punishment of
eternal fire.
Yet in the same matter, thesemen also, by dreaming, defile
the flesh and reject authorityand revile angelic majesties.
But michael the archangel, whenhe disputed with the devil and
argued about the body of moses, did not dare pronounce against

(05:52):
him a regular judgment but saidthe lord rebuke you.
But these men revile the thingswhich they do not understand and
the things which they know byinstinct, like, like unreasoning
animals.
By these things they aredestroyed.
Woe to them, for they have gonethe way of Cain and for pay
they have rushed headlong to theera of Balaam and perish in the

(06:16):
rebellion of Korah.
And Jesus spoke with him inRevelation.
Go over a couple more chaptersto your right and go to
Revelation, chapter two, withhim in revelation.
Go over a couple more chaptersto your right and go to
revelation.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Chapter 2 revelation 2 and we are looking at verse 14
.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
But I have a few things against you because you
have this is, excuse me, this isspeaking to the church of
pergamum but I have a few thingsagainst you because you have
some who hold the teachings ofBalaam, who kept teaching Balak
to put a stumbling block beforethe sons of Israel to eat
sacrificed things and thingssacrificed to idols and to

(06:55):
commit acts of immorality.
So now we see that Balaamcouldn't curse Israel directly,
but he did curse them indirectlyin Numbers 25, which is where
we are now as we learn this, inNumbers 31 16,.
Numbers 31 16 tells us we're inNumbers 25 now, but in Numbers

(07:16):
31, 16, if you're back inNumbers you could turn.
Turn with me to Numbers 31 16and we can see what is speaking
of here.
With me to numbers 31, 16 andwe can see what is speaking of
here.
Numbers 31 16 says behold, these cause the sons of israel,
through the council of balaam,to trespass against the lord in
the matter of pr.
So the plague was among thecongregation of the lord.

(07:37):
Now balaam does meet his end bythe command of god in Numbers
31.
If you're still in Numbers 31,we're gonna look at verses 7 and
8.
So they made war against Midian, just as the Lord had commanded
Moses, and they killed everymale.

(07:58):
And they killed the kings ofMidian, along with the rest of
their slain, evai and Rechim andZer and Her and Reba, the five
kings of Midian.
They also killed Balaam, theson of Beor, with the sword.
Now we move on to Israel.
So we see what happened withBalaam.
Now we're going to get to thosechapters very soon and we see

(08:20):
what Balaam did and how he cameto his end.
But now we're going to get onto Israel.
So in right here, in Numbers 25, we are going to look at this
chapter and break it down intothree parts.
The first part Israel angersGod by their immoral behavior.
Notice verses one through three.
While Israel remained at Shittim, the people began to play the

(08:43):
harlot with the daughters ofMoab.
Maine, at Shittim, the peoplebegan to play the harlot with
the daughters of Moab, for theyinvited the people to the
sacrifices of their gods, andthe people ate and bowed down to
their gods.
So Israel joined themselves toBaal of Peor and the Lord was
angry against Israel.
To show you how much of aproblem this was, let's look at
something Hosea said.

(09:03):
So all right, we are looking atHosea.
If you are there, we arelooking at Hosea, chapter 9 and
verse 10.
I found Israel like grapes inthe wilderness.
I saw your forefathers as theearliest fruit on the fig tree
in his first season.
But they come to excuse me, butthey came to Baal Peor and

(09:29):
devoted themselves to shame andthey became as detestable as
that which they loved now.
Now, this is the thing, excuseme, this is the thing that is
going on here.
This is not a small thing to bejoined to other gods.
We see right here what Hosea istalking about and he's

(09:50):
describing when he says theIsrael.
I found Israel like grapes inthe wilderness.
He's taught you know, and hesaid he saw the forefathers as
the earliest fruit on the figtree.
What the Lord is referring to ishe's referring to Israel being
tied to other gods, and this isa very serious matter.
It was a very serious matterfor Israel, is a very serious

(10:11):
matter for you and I to be tiedto other gods.
The Lord has made it clear thathe's a jealous God.
He's a God that he created us.
He only wants us to worship himbecause he's our creator and he
created us because he loves usgoing to follow other gods is
very dangerous.
It's not a small thing when youknow somebody who is in a
religion or a sect or whateverit may be, a cult, especially

(10:36):
the you know the all cult.
This is why you want to bepraying for people to get them
out of that, and if youyourselves are in any of these
weird little sects, you want toget out of those things, because
the lord takes this veryserious.
It's a very serious thing to betied up with other gods, to be
worshiping other gods, to beputting anything whether it's

(10:58):
wood, whether it's a stone,whether it's a statue, whatever
it may be before the Lord, andit is the same as putting any uh
, you know material or uh, oryou know intangible things in
front of the Lord.
What I'm basically saying is isthat you want to make the Lord
your focus, and this is what theLord wanted Israel to do, and

(11:19):
there's a price to pay when youdon't make the Lord your focus.
When the Lord, god, is yourfocus, things will go and it
will be correct.
Things will be in order, unlikeIsrael here, who has always
went astray.
Now we're going to see whathappens with Israel, because
every time Israel will fall offfrom the Lord.
There are other things that mayhappen to them, negative things

(11:40):
that would happen to them, butwhen they were on course with
the Lord, things stay smooth.
So the point I'm really makingis is that it is not a small
matter to be tied in with othergods.
It's not something to takelightly.
It's not something to where youlook at people.
Maybe it's because of someoneyou love and you try to make an
excuse and say, well, you knowthey're, they're good people,

(12:00):
you know they, they follow theserules.
No, these people are worshipingthe false God and it's
something that you should takevery serious.
All right, forgive me for thatlittle tangent, but I just had
to go on that because it is veryimportant for you and I to know
that.
Let's move on to part two.
There is a price to pay to Godfor immoral behavior and we see
this in verses four to nine.

(12:20):
The Lord said to Moses take allthe leaders of the people and
execute them in broad daylightbefore the lord, so that the
fierce anger of the lord mayturn away from israel.
So moses said to the judges ofisrael each of you slay his men
who have joined themselves to beout of pure.
Remember we just talked aboutthis.

(12:40):
Then, behold, one of the sonsof israel came and brought to
his brother tales a medianitewoman, in the sight of moses and
in the sight of all thecongregation of the sons of
israel, why they were weeping atthe doorway of the tent of
meeting.
Now you heard what just wentdown and these people are
weeping and here this guy walksin with a medianite woman.
When phinehas, the son ofEliezer, the son of Aaron, the

(13:04):
priest so this would be Aaron'sgrandson saw it, he arose from
the midst of the congregation, took a spear in his hand and he
went after the man of Israelinto the tent and pierced both
of them through the man ofIsrael and the woman through the
body.
So the plague of the sons ofIsrael was checked and those who
died by the plague were 24,000.

(13:30):
The Lord calls for the deathpenalty on the immoral leaders.
Look at verse four.
The Lord said to Moses take allthe leaders of the people and
execute them in broad daylightbefore the Lord.
Next thing we want to notice isthat moses does what the lord
says.
Look at verse 5.

(13:50):
So moses said to the judges ofisrael each of you slay his men
who have joined themselves tobaal of pior.
Next, we see, one of the sonsof israel did not heed the
message.
Verses 6 through 10.
We saw that.
Then, behold, one of the sonsof the, excuse me.
Then, behold, one of the sonsof Israel came and brought to

(14:10):
his relatives a midnight woman,in the sight of Moses and in the
sight of all the congregationof the sons of Israel.
You know, I want to point outsomething about this.
Verse 9 let's look at verse 9again.
And those who died by theplague were 24 000.
Now I want to point outsomething about that.
Uh, verse right there.
Verse 9, hold your finger righthere.

(14:31):
Go to the new testament, tofirst corinthians.
I like to point out somethingreal quick about that.
And when you get the versefirst corinthians, go to chapter
10.
First corinthians, chapter 10.
We are looking at verses 6 to 9, first corinthians.

(14:52):
10, starting at verse 6.
Now these things happen asexamples for us that we should
not crave evil things, as theyalso craved, and do not be
idolaters as some of them were.
As it is written, the peoplesat down to eat and drink and
stood up to play.

(15:12):
Nor let us act immorally assome of them did, and 23 000
fell in one day.
Nor, let us excuse me, try thelord, as some of them did, and
were destroyed by the serpents.
Now we get paul talking aboutthis 24 000 right here in first

(15:35):
corinthians.
So you see what he said thatthis was given as an example for
us so they should not craveevil, and that is the same thing
here.
The reason why these thingswere written is for an example.
So Israel during this timewould look back on these things
and they would say, hey, youknow it was, you know it's not

(15:56):
an oral tradition.
Then, remember, they didn'thave the bible.
So they would go back and say, hey, remember what happened to
Israel during this time whenthey joined themselves to buy
out of PR right.
So that's why these things werewritten, as an example, and
this is why these things werewritten for you and I.
These things were written foryou and I as an example for us
to see what happened to thepeople who are disobedient to

(16:17):
the disobedient to the Lord inthe past and what could happen
if we follow along those samelines.
All right, let's move on topart three.
Phinehas gets rewarded by God.
We see this in verses 10through 18.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying Phinehas, the son of

(16:37):
Eliezer, the son of Aaron, thepriest, has turned away my wrath
from the sons of Israel in thathe was jealous with my jealousy
, has turned away my wrath fromthe sons of israel in that he
was jealous with my jealousyamong them, so that I did not
destroy the sons of israel in myjealousy.
Therefore, say behold, I givemy covenant of peace, and it
shall be for him and hisdescendants after him a covenant

(16:57):
of perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his
god and made atonement, atonement for the sons of israel
.
Now, the name of the slain manof israel who was slain with the
midianite woman was zimri, theson of salu, the leader of a
father's household among thesimianites, and the name of the

(17:17):
midianite woman who was slainwas kazbai, the daughter of zur,
who was head of the people of afather's household in Midian.
Then the Lord spoke to Mosessaying be hostile to the
Midianites and strike them, forthey have been hostile to you
with their tricks with whichthey have deceived you in the
affair of Peor and in the affairof Kazbi, the daughter of the

(17:41):
leader of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the
plague because of Peor.
Now I would like to point outsomething.
In verses 16 through 18, godgave Moses a command that he
will follow in Numbers 31.
So let's look at that again.
And then we're going to turnand turn to uh number.
Actually we won't turn toNumbers 31.

(18:02):
You know what?
I'm gonna leave that for thenext time.
When we get there, we're in 25,we have six more books to get
through.
We get the numbers 31, but I dowant to point out that in
verses 16 to 18 let's look atthose again the lord spoke to
moses saying be hostile to themedianites and strike them, for
they have been hostile to youwith their tricks with which

(18:24):
they have deceived you in theaffair of Peor.
I just want you to keep that inmind.
So when we do get to Numbers31,.
We will.
We will trace back to Numbers25 and you will see that Moses
did keep this command.
You know, god gave Moses acommand and he will follow
through with this when we get toNumbers 21.
And he will follow through withthis when we get to Numbers 21.

(18:47):
This is why it is important toread the Bible in its context,
to read it in its proper orderthat it was written in and that
it was organized in.
This is why we go through theBible chronologically, because I
want to paint the picture foryou.
I don't want to just jumparound.
I want to paint the picture foryou and paint the story as the
story unfolded, as it unfoldedin actual time.
So that is why we do this thisway.

(19:07):
And this is really more.
This is not for you, who havebeen here for a while.
This is for anyone who comesacross.
This is why we go through booksof the Bible, chapter by
chapter, verse by verse, so thatyou don't forget that, excuse
me, so that you don't missanything and so that you get
everything.
Thus said the Lord.
Ok, that brings us to the end ofNumbers, chapter 25.
I thank you for hanging in therewith me, as always, continue to

(19:31):
pray for me.
Pray that I stay steadfast inthese scriptures and that we get
through the whole book.
If the Lord tarries, who knowsyou and I may be with the Lord
before we know it and we don'tget through it.
But in the meantime, we aregoing to stay in God's word and
we're going to learn together, and I am praying for you as well
.
I thank you all very much.
I care for you all a great deal.
I thank you for going throughthese scriptures with me.

(19:52):
As I mentioned, I am speakingand doing the teaching, but we
are learning together, becausethe good thing about the Lord's
word is is that I believe thateven in eternity, even in
eternity, people like myself andpeople like yourselves, we will
be going through thesescriptures and still learning
and still find ourselvesfascinated with the things that
the Lord done and the way thathe controlled things throughout

(20:16):
history and throughout time inhis sovereignty.
Okay, that is all for now, until next time, god bless.
