SPEAKER_00 (00:00):
Welcome to Marine's Corner, the podcast where we go
to the books of the Bible, chapter by chapter, and verse by
verse.
Wherever you are in the world, thank you for enjoying it.
Grab a glass of water, a cup ofcoffee, or tea, and let's get
into today's lesson.

(00:32):
All right, thank you for joiningme and welcome back.
Open your Bible to Numberschapter 26.
The title of today's lesson isSenses of a New Generation.
Now, usually we have the readercome in and we will read the
scripture together and thenwe'll go through the chapter and
break the chapter down.
But today we are just going togo through, read the chapter as

(00:56):
we're going through it becausethis is a lengthy amount of
scripture.
There's quite a few verses inthis numbers 26.
So we will go through it as wego along with the lesson.
Now, the last time we weretogether, we looked at Balak and
Balaam go their way.
Then Israel remained in Shittimand played the harlot to the
daughters of Moab, then joinedthemselves to Baalfior.

(01:20):
Today we are looking at a newcensus that the Lord commands
Moses and Eliezer to do.
Now this is the second censusthat uh God has given Israel to
take.
The first census numbered603,550.

(01:41):
You can see that in chapter 1 ofthis numbers 26, verses 45
through 46.
This new census will total601,730.
We will see that in verse 51 ofthis chapter.
Now, it has been 38 years sincethe first census where the Lord
took Israel on this almostfour-decade journey.

(02:05):
Now, let's remember the reasonfor this journey in the other
direction is that the Lord wasfed up with Israel because of
all their complaining andgrumbling.
This census was ordered by Godfor three reasons.
Number one, God still cared forIsrael and still was going to
bless them.
Number two, to let Israel knowthat the soldiers were

(02:27):
available.
So this was, excuse me, this wasthe gonna this was going to let
Moses know what soldiers wereavailable in Israel.
Number three, the promised landinheritance.
Now we will break this bigchapter down into two parts, and
there will be lots of numbers.
So this is how I want to do partone, the second census.
First, I'm going to give mybreakdown of all the tribes

(02:51):
because there was a census donethrough all the tribes, and I
want to make sure that we getthis all.
So first uh we are looking atverses one through fifty, but
first I'm going to give you allof the tribes and what the
census totaled for them.
Then we will go through thechapter.
Well, excuse me, I would say wewill read the verses.
So let's start out with thetribe of Reuben.

(03:12):
The first census was 46,500, thesecond census, 43,730.
And yes, you will hear thesenumbers uh for the second census
as I read through them.
But I just wanted to be surethat this stood out to you, that
you got this part of how manywere numbered per tribe.
The tribe of Simeon.

(03:34):
The first was 59,300, the second22,000, the tribe of Gad.
The first was 45,650, the second40,500, the tribe of Judah.
The first was 74,600, the second76,500, the tribe of Issachar.
The first was 54,400, the secondsixty-four thousand three

(03:59):
hundred, the tribe of Zebulun.
The first was fifty-seventhousand four hundred, the
second sixty thousand fivehundred, the tribe of Manasseh.
The first was thirty-twohundred, the second fifty-two
thousand seven hundred, thetribe of Ephraim.
The first was forty thousandfive hundred, the second

(04:19):
thirty-two thousand fivehundred.
The tribe of Benjamin.
The first was thirty-fivethousand four hundred, the
second forty-five thousand sixhundred, the tribe of Dan.
The first was sixty-two thousandseven hundred, the second
sixty-four thousand fourhundred.
The tribe of Asher.
The first was forty-one thousandfive hundred, the second was

(04:41):
fifty-three thousand fourhundred, the tribe of Naphtali.
The first was fifty-threethousand four hundred, the
second was forty-five thousandfour hundred.
Now we're gonna do somecalculation.
The first census was six hundredand three thousand five hundred
and fifty.
The second was six hundred andone thousand seven hundred and

(05:04):
thirty.
So there was a total loss of onethousand eight hundred and
twenty men.
Now we will look at this as wego through verses one through
fifty.
Now, as I mentioned, some ofthis is gonna be repeated, but I
want to be sure that you got theexact number of this census.
We will start with verse one.
Then it came about after theplague that the Lord, remember

(05:25):
the plague, you got to go backto chapter 25.

unknown (05:27):
Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_00 (05:28):
That the Lord spoke to Moses and to Eliezer, the son
of Aaron, the priest, saying,Take a census of all the
congregation of the sons ofIsrael from 20 years old and
upward, by their father'shouseholds, whoever is able to
go out to war in Israel.
Now, that is pretty much what wejust did.
That is the census that wastaken, and we know the reason

(05:49):
why.
So Moses and Eliezer, thepriest, spoke with them in the
plains of Moab by the Jordan ofJericho, saying, Take a census
of the people from twenty yearsold and upward, as the Lord has
commanded Moses.
Now, the sons of Israel who cameout of the land of Egypt were
Reuben, Israel firstborn, thesons of Reuben of Hanak, the

(06:10):
family of the uh uh Hamachitesof Palu and the family of the
Pulalites, of Hezron, the familyof the Hezronites, and Karbi,
the family of the Carmenites.
These are the families of theReubenites, and those who were
numbered were 43,730.

(06:33):
And as you remember, as we wentthrough the beginning, uh, I
told you that the second censuswas forty-three thousand seven
hundred and thirty.
Like I said, I wanted thosenumbers to stick in your head.
And the sons of Palu, Eliab, andthe sons of Eliab, Namuel, and
Dathan and Aberim, these are theDathans and the Abarim who were

(06:54):
called by the congregation whocontended against Moses and
against Aaron in the company ofKor when they contended against
the Lord.
And the earth opened its mouthand swallowed them up along with
Korah when that company died, when the fire devoured 250 men,
so they became a warning.
The sons of Kor, however, didnot die.

(07:15):
So he did, but his but his sonsdid not die.
And those of you who have beenthrough all these chapters with
me, I'm sure you remember thatthat story.

These are the families ofNaphtali according to their
families.
And those who were numbered ofthem were 45,400.

(13:20):
Now, I want to be sure that wemake sure we went through all of
those verses, because you knowthat's what we do here.
We go through every verse.
But you can go back and checkwhat I had in the beginning, the
first census versus the secondcensus, and you will see that
everything adds up.
And as I mentioned earlier, thetotal loss from the first census
to the second census was 1,820men.

(13:43):
Now we get to the second part.
The land inheritance is divided, and we see this in chapter,
excuse me, verses uh 51 through65.
Let's read.
These are those who werenumbered of the sons of Israel,
601,730.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Among these the land

(14:06):
shall be divided for aninheritance according to the
number of names.
To the larger group, you shallincrease their inheritance, and
to the smaller group you shalldiminish their inheritance.
Each shall be given theirinheritance according to those
who were numbered with them.
I do want to stop right there atthe end of verse 54 and say
something.
That does make a lot of sense.

(14:27):
When you really think aboutinheritance, there are families
who will break up an inheritancein uh they would break it up,
they would try to break it upequ equally.
Like let's say it's a familythat has six kids and they want
to leave something to theirkids, they will say, Well, you
know what, we're gonna breakthis up into six so each kid
gets something different.
So for example, if if they hadsixty dollars, each kid would

(14:49):
get ten dollars.
But the Lord said that the oneswho have the bigger numbers
would get the biggerinheritance, and the ones who
have the smaller ones would bediminished, and that would make
a lot of sense.
Let's say that you had those sixkids, but out of those six kids
that I mentioned, two of thosekids are doing really, really
well in life.
They're doing well, they have afamily, they're doing good

(15:09):
financially, they're doing goodland-wise, you know, being their
home or whatever.
It would not make sense toactually have to give them as
much as the other.
Sometimes you have to look atthat and you have to say, uh,
well, they're gonna need more.
Yes, they may have more, butthey had, I don't mean they have
more like financially.

(15:30):
What I mean when I say that thetwo have more, I'm saying they
have like more responsibility, more land, maybe they have more
kids.
Example, let's just say each ofthose two kids that I mentioned,
they have five, six kids apiecethemselves, right?
It doesn't make sense to say, well, kid number five has zero
kids, no land, they don't own ahome.

(15:50):
It doesn't, you it doesn't makesense to give them the same
equal amount when they don'tneed as much.
Now, yes, you can splitsomething with them, but it
doesn't have to be as much asthe ones who have more.
I I hope that makes sense whatuh what I was saying there.
Pick it back up at verse 55.
But the land shall be divided bylot.
They shall receive theirinheritance according to the

(16:10):
names of the tribes of theirfathers, which is what we just
went through.
According to the selection bylot, their inheritance shall be
divided between the larger andthe smaller groups.
These are those who werenumbered of the Levites
according to their families, ofGershan, the family of the
Gershonites, of Kohat, thefamily of the Kohalites, of

(16:31):
Marari, the family of theMerorites, these are the
families of Levi, the family ofthe Libnites, the family of the
Hebronites, the family of theMahalites, the family of the
Mishites, the family of theKorahites, and Kohat became the

(16:52):
father of Amram.
And the name of Amram's wife wasJochbed, the daughter of Levi,
who was born to Levi in Egypt, and he bore, excuse me, and she
bore to Amram Aaron and Mosesand their sister Miriam.
And to Aaron were born Nadab andAbihu, Eliezer, and Ithamer.

(17:14):
But Nadab and Abahu died whenthey offered strange fire before
the Lord.
I'm sure if you've been rockingwith me and going with me
through the chapters, youremember that.
And those who were numbered ofthem were twenty-three thousand.
Every male from a month old andupward, for they were not
numbered among the sons ofIsrael, since no inheritance was
given to them among the sons ofIsrael.

(17:38):
These are those who werenumbered by Moses and Eliezer
the priest, who numbered thesons of Israel in the plains of
Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
But among those there was not aman of those who were numbered
by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel
in the wilderness of Sinai.

(17:58):
For the Lord had said of them, they shall surely die in the
wilderness.
And not a man was left of themexcept Caleb, the son of
Japanai, and Joshua the son ofnone.
That was an important pickupright there.
Out of all those people thatwere numbered, let's look at
that again, 63 to 65.

(18:19):
These are the sons, excuse me,these are those who were
numbered by Moses and Eliezerthe priest, who numbered the
sons of Israel in the plains ofMoab by the Jordan at Jericho.
But among these there was not aman of those who were numbered
by Moses and Aaron, the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel
in the wilderness.
For the Lord said of them, theyshall surely die in the

(18:42):
wilderness.
Now, the only people who didn't,who were going to go into this
part of his land were Caleb theson of Jephaniah and Joshua the
son of Nun.
Now there is something else tonote here.
That the Levites were not givenland but a place to live.
Because you know, if you noticethrough all that reading we did,
the Levites were not given anyland.

(19:04):
They were given a place to live, and you will see that in Numbers
chapter 35, verses 1 through 5,which we will be at soon.
And you can also see that inJoshua, the 21st chapter.
All right, that brings us to theend of today's lesson.
I hope that you got somethingout of the lesson.
I hope that it encouraged you.
I hope that it fed you.

(19:25):
I ask you to continue to prayfor me, to stay steadfast in the
scriptures, to continue tostudy, to bring the word to you
and to myself.
Because as I always say, we arelearning together.
We are brothers and sisters inChrist.
And it is important that welearn together.
And I am praying for you aswell.
I hope that you are wellwherever you are.
You're in my thoughts, and Iappreciate you all a great deal.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
