How many banner ads should really live on your radio station’s homepage? That question came up during the Texas Association of Broadcasters conference when Radio Update’s Andy Meadows asked me point-blank.

Some stations go all-in with what I call the “NASCAR approach,” plastering ads on every spare pixel. Others strip things so clean that you wonder if they’ve sold a single advertiser. Both extremes send the wrong message.

In this episode, we’ll talk about:

  • Why the 30% rule on mobile matters (and what happens if you break it).
  • Why having no ads at all can look just as unprofessional as having too many.
  • A smart starting point for most stations: six to eight placements on desktop, three to five on mobile.
  • Why user experience matters as much as the number of ads.
  • How strong design and meaningful ad content can boost both listener trust and advertiser results.

I’ll also highlight an example of a station group that’s thriving with banner ads because they consistently monitor their analytics and adjust—proof that this is as much about strategy as it is about numbers: https://www.breezynews.com.

Bottom line: your homepage should reflect a healthy balance. Not a cluttered digital yard sale, not an empty billboard, but a professional space that serves both your audience and your sponsors.
