Episode 7: Notes
Black Meta-Modernism
In this episode of Between Shelves, we sit down with Germane Marvel to explore the concept of Black Meta-Modernism—an emerging framework that reframes and expands the possibilities of Meta-Modern thought through the lens of Black & Other experience, history, and culture. What is Black Meta-Modernism, and how does it differ from broader Meta-Modernism? What does it mean to think, create, and live within this framework? Together, we unpack how Black Meta-Modernism navigates the oscillations between tradition and innovation, trauma and healing, individuality and community, colonization and freedom. Through literature, philosophy, art, and lived experience, we examine how this paradigm challenges dominant narratives while centering the unique contributions and struggles of Black & Other identity in a rapidly evolving world. Join us as we explore questions of identity, resilience, and imagination in the context of Black Meta-Modernism, uncovering how it offers new pathways for Self-discovery, collective empowerment, and cultural renewal. Whether you’re new to the term or already curious about its implications, this dialogue promises to spark meaningful insights into the future of Black thought and creativity.
