Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Beyond
Sunday, where we bridge the gap
between our faith and our dailylives.
I'm Pastor Nick, and todaywe're diving into a profound
section of scripture, john 17,which is often referred to as
the real Lord's Prayer.
Here Jesus prays not only forhis immediate disciples, but for
all believers, echoing throughthe ages right into our own
(00:21):
lives.
Imagine for a moment if youcould hear Jesus praying aloud
over your life.
What would you say?
What would he say?
What would he ask for you?
It's a powerful thought that weget to explore today as we
delve into his words.
Picture the scene Jesus isfacing the imminent approach of
(00:44):
his crucifixion, yet he pausesto pray, showing us the critical
importance of intercession.
As we listen to his words, wefind a treasure trove of
insights about his prioritiesfor us.
Jesus starts his prayer byaddressing his own immediate
need his glorification throughthe crucifixion and resurrection
(01:05):
, which, paradoxically, is forour benefit too.
In John, chapter 17, verse 1,jesus says Father, the time has
come, glorify your Son, thatyour Son may glorify you.
For just a moment, reflect onthe dual nature of Jesus's
request for his glorification tofulfill the Father's plan and
(01:28):
for it to be a means to glorifythe Father, god, it's a reminder
that our pursuits should alwaysreflect back to God, magnifying
his name through our actions.
Consider your personal andprofessional achievements.
How do you consciously thinkabout directing the glory back
(01:49):
to God?
I think sometimes we miss that.
We miss that because we're busy.
We miss that because we justdon't think about it.
We miss it because we're notsure that everything should
glorify God.
I know if you and I were tohave a conversation, we'd say,
yes, everything should glorifyGod, but there are things in our
life that seem mundane, that wedon't think should glorify God.
But the truth is, everythingshould bring glory back to God.
(02:12):
So this week, try to frame yoursuccesses in a way that
highlights God's work in andthrough you, whether it's
through a conversation, a socialmedia post or even a quiet
prayer of thanks.
Now, as Jesus prays for hisdisciples, he focuses on their
need for protection from theevil one and sanctification
(02:35):
through the truth.
John, chapter 17, verses 11 and12, reveals Jesus's deep
concern for the unity and purityof his disciples.
Holy Father, he says, protectthem by the power of your name
the name you gave me so thatthey may be one as we are one.
Think of a team rowing in aregatta.
(02:57):
We have tons of that happeningaround Sarasota, where I live.
For them, unity in theirstrokes, harmony in their
efforts, makes all thedifference.
Jesus desires that same kind ofharmony for his followers,
driven by the truth of God'sword.
(03:18):
Identify one practical way thatyou can foster unity within your
church, that you can fosterunity within your small group.
That you can foster unitywithin your church, that you can
foster unity within your smallgroup, that you can foster unity
within your community.
This week, perhaps it'sreaching out to resolve a
misunderstanding or initiating aprayer group focused on unity
(03:38):
and protection.
Jesus then extends his prayerto encompass all future
believers.
That's you and me Emphasizingthat our unity will be a
testimony to the world.
Think about that for a moment, you and I.
When we live in unity, when welive in harmony with other
believers, we are a testimony tothe world about the glory of
(04:02):
Jesus Christ.
In John, chapter 17, verses 20and 21, jesus prays my prayer is
not for them alone.
I pray also for those whobelieve in me through their
message that all of them may beone father, just as you are in
me and I am in you.
This is a very specific form ofunity.
He's saying it's as unified ashim and God are.
(04:27):
That's how we are supposed tobe.
Consider the impact of globalprayer movements, where
believers from differentdenominations and backgrounds
unite in prayer.
These movements not onlystrengthen the participants, but
also serve as powerfulwitnesses to the unity and love
among Christ followers.
What steps can you take topromote greater unity within the
(04:51):
broader Christian community?
Perhaps participating in ororganizing events could be a
start.
In today's episode we'vejourneyed through Jesus' prayer
in John chapter 17.
To take a deeper look, I'llencourage you to go to

And in that you're going todiscover the depths of his care
and intercession for you and I.

in our lives, protection andsanctification through his truth
and unity among believers.

(05:37):
