We are Castles and Cryptids, where the castles are haunted
and the cryptids are cryptic as fuck. We're a couple
of Canadian chicks who are fascinated by freaky shit. So
join us as we fall down numerous rabbit holes, numerous,
so very many rabbit holes, fortune telling.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
We talk true crime, cryptids, haunted af stuff, and much
much more.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
There are definitely some movie tangents in there too, because
we love our horror movie chat.

the host of Cause of Death. One hundred seconds to midnight,
and you're listening to Rainbow Crimes and hopefully this episode

(00:58):
will let us see some uni corn justice.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Hello and welcome to Rainbow Crimes. Flight thirty two commuter
airplane to Maryland. I'm your flight attendant, Fabulosa. Please put
your seats in an upright position, lock the tray in
front of you, and fasten your seat belts. Although this
will be a short commute trip, a snack and drink

(01:39):
cart will make its way around you once we get
settled in the air. As ow Wee's thank you for
flying rainbow crimes.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Hey, they're warriors. I'm your host, CJ. Welcome to the
first Minnesota of July. The kids are back east in
New Jersey right now. And I had an awful dream
about watching a plane crash the other night. I dreamt
my daughter and I were at a grocery store parking
lot when we see this plane take off. It turns

(02:10):
on its side and I start saying, oh shit, oh shit.
And then we watched the plane in horror point nose
down and crash and then it exploded. Who is terrible.
And it's not the first dream I've had about crashing planes.
I've read that dreaming of a plane crash could represent

(02:31):
feeling overwhelmed or anxious about something that you can't control
in your life. I'm just gonna have to chalk it
up to the worry I have about the kids getting
back home safely. I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before,
but the street I live on is pretty nice. It's
a pretty nice neighborhood, but some of the streets surrounding

(02:53):
it are ghetto with fuck, which means, oftentimes late at
night I'll see transients walking down my street to get
to a main street or to the park and forest
that I walk Jack in during the day. The other night,
I took Jack out front to have him do his
last potty for the night, and I see this transient

(03:13):
woman limping down the street. Jack, my fearless little guard dog,
starts barking at her. But it's after eleven PM, and
I don't want to wake my neighbors, so I do
my best to keep them quiet. The woman asked me
if she was walking the right direction to the mission. Confused,
I'd tell her I don't know of any mission in

(03:34):
the area, but her question made me wonder if she
was hoping to find a place to sleep for the night.
Then she asks, if she keeps walking, will she find
a main road. I tell her yes, But then as
I watch her limp down the street, I see her
cross the main road and keep walking down a street
that leads to the bay. It's not the direction she

(03:56):
should be going, or at least not the one that
she asked about. I go back into the house and
I leave Jack inside and I tell the kids about
the woman. The kids had just made themselves too many
casadeas for dinner, so they wrap up what's left and
I grab a bottle of water. I get in my
car and I find the woman. I gave her the

(04:18):
leftover casadeas and some water. She looked exhausted from walking,
so against my better survival instincts that true crime podcasts
have given me, I had her get into my car
and I drove her to the nearest seven to eleven
and I gave her a few bucks. I felt bad
for her. She was a little older and seemed to

(04:39):
be in an awful lot of pain, and it took
her forever to get out of the car. But when
she finally did, she thanked me and I went home.
I sometimes feel that plenty of people have done nice
things for me in my life, so if I can
do something nice once in a while for someone, I'm
paying it forward. Boy, it was hard to get my

(05:02):
shit together to record this episode. It's been ready for
four or five, maybe six days, but the recording part
in talking myself into doing it. Ah, that's been a struggle.
But here we are. And one last thing I'd like
to share with you is that in the beginning of June,
I asked darkcast Shows if anyone would like to record

(05:22):
a happy Pride note to my Rainbow Warriors. I thought
everyone had forgotten or were too busy to do it.
But then when I was looking in a folder on
the network's Google Drive, I found a couple. I had
no idea they were there, and I'd like to play
'em for you now. After all, our pride is year long, truly,

(05:43):
and not just one month out of the year.

Speaker 5 (05:46):
Hi, Rainbow Warriors. I'm Pat from put of Terra and
on behalf of myself and my co host Darcy. I'd
like to wish you all a wonderful Pride month. We
stand with you in these particularly challenging times and we
shut together wipes it. Enjoy your month, and off you
go into the soothing arms of fabulosa. Love you all.

Speaker 6 (06:07):
Now, then, beautiful souls. Swales here from the bell Witch Podcast,
part of the Darkcast Network, just popping on to wish
you all a very beautiful and magical Pride month this June.
Sent with all my love and magic. Let those beautiful

(06:31):
rainbow flags fly high.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
Thank you Pat from part of Terror and Swales from
the bell Witch Podcast. Very sweet sentiments. Also, Warriors, please
check out both of those shows. All right, let's dig
in the case. I'd like to tell you about this
Minnesota occurred along the Baltimore Washington Parkway and Maryland, and

(06:56):
this happened on November twenty four, twenty twenty one. The
actual roadside of this parkway is considered federal property, so
the case I'll speak of was considered and prosecuted as
a federal crime. This is important because federal crimes are
seen as more severe than state crimes and they often

(07:16):
receive a harsher punishment. On November twenty four, twenty twenty one,
the day before Thanksgiving here in the United States, twenty
eight year old Janis Mason was driving. Next to her
was her girlfriend of two months, Charisse's carr The women
were headed north of the Baltimore Washington Parkway in the

(07:37):
early hours. The vehicle they were in was a Ford
Expedition and in case you weren't sure, this is a
large size SUV. Since Janice is from Melbourne, Florida, my
assumption is that Charisse was also from somewhere in Florida.
But why were they in Maryland? Again just to guess,

(07:58):
but it was the day before thanks and possibly they
were headed out of town for a long weekend, maybe
even to spend time with one of their families. However,
whatever the theory is, I don't believe it has much,
if any, relevance to the case. Apparently, the couple were
bickering as they were driving, and Cherise was heated, so

(08:20):
she threw Janis's phone out the passenger side window. Janis
immediately stopped the suv and she ordered Charise out. Charise complied,
and while Janie should have just driven away at that point,
she didn't. She saw Charise walking away, and she put
the suv in drive and she plowed over Charise. Janis

(08:43):
then sped off as the sun rose and began to
put light on the day. Vehicles driving on the Baltimore
Washington Parkway reported seeing a woman's body. It was just
laying on the shoulder of the road. United States. The
ARC police were the first to arrive and conduct an
examination of the area. They also picked up Janie's phone.

(09:08):
Janice borrowed a phone to try to find her lost
phone with a nap. She was shocked to see that
her phone ping did a police station. She ended up
at the police station, hoping to retrieve her phone and
be on her way, but once at the station, she
was detained for questioning about the woman's body they had
found on the side of the road. Janis said, yes,

(09:30):
she knew the woman that was found, and she had
a couple of versions of what happened, but finally she
settled on this one. She said her and Cherise had
been verbally fighting when suddenly Charise hit her while she
was driving, and then things got very physically violent between them.
Cherise tossed Janice's phone out her car window, and that's

(09:53):
when Janie hit the brakes and pulled over. She told
Cheries to get out, and then she drove off. She
said she drove back after going up the road a
few miles because she wanted to find her phone and Cherise,
but she couldn't find either. While Janis was busy in
the interrogation room, other officers went into the station parking lot.

(10:16):
They took a good hard look at the Ford expedition
Janice had been driving. When they came back into the station,
they notified the detectives who were questioning Janice that the
expedition had damage consistent to having run over someone. The
vehicle was damaged in the front grill and the front

(10:36):
passenger side panel. The suv was impounded for further inspection. Nervously,
Janice knew she was in deep shit, and then she
started to add to her story. She told detectives that
Cherise came out her with a large stone or a
brick after she got out of the car, and in

(10:57):
self defense to get the hell out of there, she
acted incidentally hit Cherise with the expedition. Janis felt like
her life was in jeopardy and she was just trying
to get away to safety and you know warriors. That
addendum to her story sounds an awful lot like Cobayo
ass to me. The police arrested Janice and they held

(11:19):
her for murder. While she was being held, it was
discovered the crime against her wasn't in local law enforcement's jurisdiction,
but rather the crime was committed on federal property and
that made this a federal crime. So all the paperwork
the evidence in Janice needed to be transferred to a

(11:41):
federal law enforcement. When all of that was said and done,
Janis was indicted on a second degree murder charge for
Chares's death. Janis would see her trials start in twenty
twenty three. On May eighteenth, twenty twenty three, she would
be found guilty of the manslaughter of Charise, and she'd

(12:02):
be sentenced to nine years of incarceration plus an additional
three years of supervised probation, rest and power. Cherise, Well,
I know that was a short story, but that concludes
this first minisode for the month. I love your warriors

(12:23):
and you matter very much. Remember it's not a crime
to be gay or to live your truth unless you're
a murderer. Explain ext
