Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Beyond the
Walls with Jeremy Thomas and
our series on the New TestamentFramework.
Today a smaller, bite-sizedpiece from the larger lesson.
We hope you enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Jesus' different
interpretation of Moses and the
prophets, which wereauthoritative for Jewish life
and practice.
So, jesus' view, first of all,the fifth commandment to honor
your parents.
Turn to Matthew 15 for this one.
Matthew 15, 1 through 9.
Of course you know you've gotthe Ten Commandments, one of
(00:32):
which is related to the FifthCommandment, honoring your
mother and your father.
Right, the commandment that hasa promise attached to it that
if you do so you'll live long inthe land.
Because if you obey your motherand your father, you honor them
, then you know you developauthority orientation in your
way of living and that meansyou're not going to be someone
(00:52):
who raises hell, you're notgoing to be a hell raiser in
society, and that means you'lllive long in the land because
you're living a nice, good,clean, authoritatively driven
life.
So the law is actually reallypractical.
Let's see what happens.
Then some pharisees and scribescame to jesus from jerusalem and
they said why do your disciplesbreak the tradition of the
elders?
And there's the issue oftradition okay, where they do
(01:16):
not wash their hands when theyeat bread.
Okay, so this is one of thetraditions.
Verse three and he answered.
And he said to them with aquestion, by the way, sometimes
the best answer for a questionis what a question?
Because what are you trying todo?
You're trying to point out thefallacy of their question.
Okay, so they.
He asked them why do youyourselves transgress the
(01:38):
commandment of god?
For the sake of your tradition?
So tradition had taken on alevel in pharisaism.
You know, that was all it wasreally about.
You know, sometimes people say, well, you bible church people
are just pharisee and we're theexactly the opposite of
pharisees.
The pharisees were notinterested in the bible, they
were interested in tradition.
They were following traditions, thousand details about sabbath,
(02:02):
forgetting that sab means rest.
You know, our only interest isin what the Bible teaches.
So we're the exact opposite ofthe Pharisees in Bible church.
They were not interested in theBible.
So why do you transgress thecommandment of the Bible?
Right, for the sake of yourtradition.
Verse 4, for God said, may notunderstand this particular
(02:43):
tradition.
So let's describe a little bitabout what's going on here.
This is called the Law ofKorban.
Korban C-O-R-B-A-N.
Here's what happened In Israelilife in the ancient world.
You didn't have Social Security.
You didn't have MedicareMedicaid, they didn't have these
(03:07):
programs.
Okay, you didn't have medicaremedicaid, they didn't have these
programs.
So when you got older, if youbecame impoverished, it came to
the children to take care of theparents.
This was a part of honoringyour father and your mother.
Right, you would take care ofthem, especially if one of the
children had done.
Well, you know, he had moneybags, okay, good, so he can help
his parents and support them intheir latter years.
(03:31):
But in the traditions of thePharisees, there was one way you
could get around this.
You could take advantage of thelaw of Korban.
And the law of Korban was whereyou said well, this money is
dedicated to the temple, thismoney is reserved for the temple
and its servants.
(03:51):
By doing that, what you did wasyou put a hedge around that
money.
That money could not be used tohelp your parents.
And that's what Jesus is saying, that they were doing.
Notice, in verse 5, you saywhoever says to his father or
mother oh well, whatever I havethat would have helped you has
been given to God.
(04:12):
I gave it to God.
I can't help you Now.
They didn't intend to give itto God, they were just going to
use it for themselves.
That's the whole point.
And by this verse 6, he says heis not to honor his father or
his mother, in that case, corban.
Law of Corban.
That money has a hedge aroundit.
Can't use it to help you, maand Pa.
And by this he says youinvalidated the word of God.
(04:35):
Why, for the sake of yourtradition, you hypocrite?
He says Rightly, did Isaiahprophesy of you?
And he quotes Isaiah.
The point is to show that thePharisees had changed the
original intent that Moses hadin the fifth commandment and in
(04:59):
so doing, in so changing theinterpretation of Moses, they
invalidated the Word of God.
The same thing that happenstoday when people do not
interpret the Bible accurately, following the literal,
grammatical, historical,contextual, hermeneutic meaning.
We interpret every word in itssentence with the original
(05:20):
intent that the author wasintending to convey to us.
In other words, we don't readanything in there, we read it in
the context in which it wasgiven.
And sometimes that takes time, right, because I just explained
to you the law of corban, whichwas a pharisaic tradition, and
and that's not in here, right inthe text, right, I mean it
isn't in a roundabout way, butthat's the background, that's
(05:41):
historical background.
You have to know that to knowwhat is being said here.
So whenever anybody takes apassage out of its context,
interprets it in a way that wasnot originally intended by the
author.
They're doing the same thingthe phes were doing right and
(06:02):
that wasn't correct.
It's incorrect.
It's unbelief.
People shouldn't be doing that.
