Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Beyond the Walls with Jeremy Thomas and
our series on the New TestamentFramework.
Today a smaller, bite-sizedpiece from the larger lesson.
We hope you enjoy it.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Justice is not a quality that exists independent
of God.
It's not something out there,an idea that's just out there
and God says that's just no.
Justice is who God is, and sojustice originates in God.

(00:31):
It stems from his nature andessence.
In other words, to put itanother way, you and I would
have no concept of justice atall if God was not just Because
he made us in his image, and soour concept of justice, even if
it's fallen and finite right, isreflective of him.

(00:54):
It's why we have a concept ofjustice.
If God wasn't there and we wereall here, humans would not have
come up with an idea of justiceor non-justice, just like we
wouldn't have come up with loveor non-love.
These are all things that stemfrom who God is.
Whether you're a believer or anunbeliever, it makes no
difference in the world right,we are who we are because of who

(01:18):
God is and how he made us inhis image, and even though that
image is marred and fallen, westill have concepts that derive
from him.
So that's the source of justice.
It is God himself.
It's tied in with who he is,and because he's the opposite of

(01:39):
sin, this creates the problem, and God has to judge the sin.
He can't compromise hischaracter.
He can't set justice aside, forexample.
And God has to judge the sin.
He can't compromise Hischaracter.
He can't set justice aside, forexample, and just say, well, I
can overlook sin.
He can't overlook sin.
It's contrary to who he is.
So it has to somehow be dealtwith.
And that's then how I've laidthe lesson out is how that gets

(02:02):
dealt with, because the OldTestament is paving the way for
us to understand why this bloody, gory mess is a picture of
justice.
So this first point sinrequires blood sacrifice.
Let's go to Genesis 3.21.

(02:22):
And really think through this, not just read it.
I know you're familiar with it,so I'll try to shock you Again.
It's the best way to try toread.
The Bible really is.
If you don't know what's there,if you're reading it going,
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you're reading it wrong, you're

(02:44):
going to miss things.
You're going to miss things.
You're going to miss a lot.
321, the Lord God made garmentsof skin for Adam and his wife
and clothed them.
Wait a minute.
Made garments of skin?
We would say leather, right, leather, leather.

(03:04):
Who was the first clothingdesigner?
God, who made the first set ofleather pants and all the

(03:28):
cowboys and bikers said praiseGod, right, he made the first
set of chaps right.
But what was the process ofmaking this leather pant?
Can you imagine?
Adam and Eve, everything's good.
You know, there's this littlelamb, hasn't done anything.

(03:50):
God slits the throat, bloodjust gushes out.
You know you're thinking whatdid that little animal do?
It was innocent.
Why does it deserve that?
That's not the end of it.
Then all the entrails are drugout.
Have you ever cleaned an animalSlit?
You know, get all the entrailsout Takes time.

(04:15):
You've got to get your hands inthere.
You're bloody.
I usually have a bucket underme.
Flies are coming.
Then you have to take this furand you have to skin that sucker

(04:38):
right.
You're working with your knifeand you're getting it all off.
This is what happened.
They had to see this, they hadto watch this.
They had to watch this, thisinnocent animal, and then make
the leather pants to cover them.
You know what's all thisbloodshed?
What's going on?

(05:00):
What's going on is teaching ussomething about justice, the
justice of God and what it takesfor a man to be right with God.
And you say this isslaughterhouse religion, this is
nasty.
I mean, I'm not going to eatmeat anymore.
I'm just going to be avegetarian.
You get this response.

(05:21):
I mean, how many?
Not going to eat meat anymore?
I'm just going to be avegetarian.
You get this response.
I mean, how many did you ever?
I read a quote one time on theinternet.
It says it said something tothe effect I wish these people
would stop hunting animals andjust get their meat the way
everybody else does in thegrocery store.
That's the way most peoplethink.

(05:41):
They're so separated from theprocess right, the bloody, gory
death process that's requiredfor us to have meat to eat, that
they think we just.
You know, they're just thestuff in a package and hey yo.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
