Here is your host, Randy Black.

(00:47):
In the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, we encounter an extremely profound story of faith
and of healing.
The account of Jesus healing a paralytic man who was lowered through the roof of a home by his friends.
This event is recorded in Matthew chapter 9 verses 1 through 8, Mark chapter 2 verses 1 through 12, and Luke chapter 5 verses 17 through 26,

(01:12):
not only illustrates Jesus' power to heal physical ailments,
but also highlights his authority to forgive sins.
As we dive into these passages,
let's explore the significance of faith,
of community support,
and of the divine authority
of Jesus.
As we do each week, let's open up with a prayer.

(01:37):
Heavenly father,
we come before you with grateful hearts,
seeking understanding and insight into your word.
As we study the healing of the paralytic,
open our minds and our hearts to the lessons you have for us.
Help us to grasp the depths
of your grace
and the power of faith

(01:58):
that moves mountains.
May this lesson
inspire us to trust
in your healing touch and to support one another as we journey together
in faith.
In the name of Jesus, we pray.
Amen.
Matthew chapter 9 verses 1 through 8. And he entered into a ship and passed over, and came into his own

(02:21):
city. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy,
lying on a bed.
And Jesus, seeing their faith, said unto the sick of the palsy,
Son, be of good cheer.
Thy sins be forgiven thee. And behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves,
this man
blasphemeth.
And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

(02:46):
For whether is easier to say,
thy sins be forgiven thee,
or to say,
arise
and walk,
but that ye may know that the son of man hath power on earth
to forgive sins.
Then saith he to the sick of the palsy.
Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose and departed to his house.

(03:08):
But when the multitudes saw it, they marveled
and glorified
God,
which had given such power
unto men.
Mark chapter 2 verses 1 through 12.
And again he entered into Capernaum after some days,
and it was noised that he was in the house.
And straightway many were gathered together,

(03:31):
insomuch that there was no room to receive them,
no, not so much as about the door. And he preached the word unto them,
and they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy
which was born of 4.
And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press,
they uncovered the roof where he was.

(03:52):
And when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
When Jesus saw their faith
he said unto the sick of the palsy,
'Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.' But there was certain of the scribes sitting there
and reasoning in their hearts,
why doth this man thus speak blasphemies?

(04:14):
Who can forgive sins but God only?
And immediately, when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves,
he said unto them, why reason ye these things in your hearts?
Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy,
thy sins be forgiven thee, or to say, arise and take up thy bed, and walk,

(04:36):
but that ye may know
that the son of man
hath power on earth to forgive sins.
He saith to the sick of the palsy.
I say unto thee, arise and take up thy bed,
and go thy way into thine house. And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all,

(04:56):
insomuch that they were all amazed and glorified God,
saying, we never saw it on this fashion.'
Luke
5 17-26.
And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee and Judea

(05:20):
and Jerusalem.
And the power of the LORD was present to heal them. And behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy,
and they sought means to bring him in and to lay him before him.
And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude,
they went upon the house top and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.

(05:48):
And when he saw their faith he said unto him, 'Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.' And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, 'Who is this which speaketh blasphemies?
Who can forgive sins but God alone?'
But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he, answering, said unto them. What reason ye in your hearts?

(06:10):
Whether it's easier to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee? Or to say, Rise up and walk?
But that ye may know that the Son of Man hath power upon earth to forgive sins.
He said unto the sick of the palsy.
I say unto thee, arise and take up thy couch and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up before them and took up that whereon he lay and departed to his own house,

(06:35):
glorifying
God.
And they were all amazed, and they glorified
God and were filled with fear, saying, we have seen strange things today.
The healing
of the paralytic man is a remarkable story that reveals
multiple layers of spiritual truth to us.

(06:56):
First,
the unwavering faith of the paralytic's friends
is a central theme in this story.
Their determination to bring their friend to Jesus,
even if it meant dismantling part of a roof,
underscores the power of collected faith and community support.
It reminds us that sometimes our faith in Christ can be strengthened and carried by those around us,

(07:22):
especially in moments
of desperation.
Secondly,
Jesus' response to the paralytic's condition demonstrates his divine authority.
While the primary need was for physical healing,
Jesus addressed the deeper issue of sin first.
By forgiving the man's sins,
Jesus asserted his authority as the son of man, capable of performing both spiritual

(07:47):
and physical healings.
This act serves as a profound reminder that our deepest need is reconciliation
with God, and Jesus is the one who provides this forgiveness.
The reaction of the scribes and the Pharisees is also significant.
They were troubled by Jesus' claim to forgive sins, which they view viewed as blasphemy

(08:09):
because God is the only one who could forgive sins.
Jesus,
aware of their thoughts, used this opportunity
to demonstrate his authority by healing the man.
This not only validated his divine power,
but it also challenged the religious leaders' understanding
of God's authority and the nature of sin and forgiveness.

(08:32):
Furthermore, the healing resulted in a public display of amazement
and glorification of god.
The transformation of the paralytic from a state of helplessness
to walking and praising god was a testament to Jesus' divine power
and to the effectiveness
of faith.
It highlights that witnessing such miracles

(08:54):
can lead people to a deeper
recognition of God's power
and God's glory.
We have 5 key takeaways from these three pieces of scripture in this story today.
1st is faith and community support.
This story underscores the importance of faith and support
from others as we go along our own spiritual journeys.

(09:17):
2nd is Jesus' authority.
Jesus has the divine authority to forgive sins and perform miracles,
demonstrating his role as the son of man.
3rd is that forgiveness should occur first.
Jesus prioritized the spiritual healing of the paralytic man over his physical healing, showing that reconciliation with God is the ultimate need.

(09:42):
4th is the challenge to the conventional beliefs of the time.
Jesus' actions challenge the religious leaders as they sat right in front of him, challenge their understanding
of god's authority
and of the nature of sin.
And our last takeaway is about a public witness.
The healing of this individual led to widespread amazement and to glorification

(10:07):
by these people of God. It
illustrates the the impact of the miracles on faith
and on worship.
As we reflect on these passages, we see a powerful illustration of faith in action.
The friends of the paralytic teach us about the importance of perseverance
and creativity

(10:28):
in bringing others to Christ.
Their actions reflect a profound commitment
to their friends' well-being,
demonstrating that our support for each other should be unwavering
and resourceful.
Jesus' prioritization to forgiveness over physical healing
reveals
a critical truth about the nature of human need.

(10:50):
While physical healing is important,
it is the spiritual healing that addresses our most profound needs.
This perspective
shifts our focus from immediate physical concerns
to eternal spiritual truths,
urging us to seek reconciliation with god above all.
The response of the scribes and the Pharisees invites us to examine

(11:14):
our own understanding of god's authority.
Their challenge
highlights
how easily religious knowledge can become an obstacle to recognizing divine authority when it doesn't fit preconceived notions.
This serves as a reminder to remain open to God's work in ways that may defy
our own current expectations.

(11:37):
And finally, the public amazement and glorification of God's God emphasizes the role of miracles in enhancing faith and worship.
Such events are not just about
the miraculous events themselves, the miraculous acts that take place,
but they are about how they point us to the greater reality of god's power and grace.

(12:00):
It encourages us to share and celebrate the ways we witness god's work in our lives,
fostering a deeper sense of awe and devotion to him.
As we do each week, let's close out this lesson on our scriptures with a prayer.
Lord,

(12:20):
we thank you for the powerful lesson revealed
through the healing of the paralytic.
Help us to embody the faith and determination of his friends, supporting one another in our spiritual journeys.
May we recognize and appreciate the forgiveness you offer as the greatest gift,
and challenge us to broaden our understanding of your authority.

(12:44):
As we go forth, may we be inspired by the public glorification of your miracles
and seek to live lives that reflect your power and grace.
In Jesus' name, we pray.
Amen.

the podcast each week, we are providing value to you, and that you would then, in turn, provide value back to us. And that can come in many different forms. But we break them down into 3 distinct categories,

(13:40):
time, talent, and treasure.
Time, by listening and sharing the show. Talent,
by reaching out and providing for us cover art or ideas for scriptures to cover, for themes for us to look at. And treasure would be through financial support.

If you have a prayer request, please reach out to the show via one of the contact forms that are on our website so we can share that with the audience, and we can work together to lift those requests up to the lord as as a unit.
We do have some prayer requests to share this week. First one is for a gentleman named Jim Clayton. Jimmy and I talked together at Cabell Midland High School many years ago,

(14:45):
and
he's currently
preparing to go under another round of treatment for cancer. And he reached out on Facebook and asked for everyone who prays to please lift him up and and remember him so that healing can occur.
Another gentleman that I I worked with in the past and no further will is a gentleman named Bill Palmer. Bill also is dealing with cancer and recurrence of it, and dealing with the treatments and things associated. So we wanna lift Bill up, just like Jim as well.

(15:13):
And we also wanna lift up the name of Annette Prewitt. Annette
is
the wife of of Jimmy Prewitt, pastor at, Bridge Church in Fredericksburg, Texas, and they have a podcast together called Living Up in a Down World, and you can find it at living up in a down world.com.
Annette currently has issues with her knee and is trying to to go through the process of having that heal without having to undergo surgery and has asked for individuals to lift her up in prayer.

(15:40):
With those requests in mind,
let's let's pray and and take those along with the unspoken requests we have to the Lord.
Heavenly father, we thank you once again for the chance to come together, learn from your word.
We lift up
specific requests that have been sent out to us. We lift up the names of Jimmy Clayton, Jimmy undergoing his treatments for cancer, Bill Palmer also undergoing treatments for cancer, and Annette Pruitt with her knee and the issue she's having there. Touch them, lord, and and provide healing to them if you find it to be the best way for your will to be done.

(16:21):
We also lift up the unspoken request that people in our audience may have and haven't been shared with us. May you touch these individuals
in whatever way that you seem fit.
We we know that you hold those answers to all our prayers.
We trust
in your wisdom
and your your guidance in meeting those requests with the answers you provide.

(16:45):
We work each week and each day to strive
and and share your word with the lord with the world in hopes that they might accept your son, Jesus, as their savior. So we lift up all of those who are unsaved as well, that they might
accept Jesus as their savior and then be able to spend eternity
with him, with you, and with all the saved in heaven.

(17:08):
In Jesus name, we pray.
Amen. Our next episode is going to look at Jesus healing the man,
whose hand is withered on the Sabbath,
creates a little bit of controversy.
You can read up on that ahead of time or read those scriptures by looking at Matthew chapter 12
verses 9 through 14.

(17:30):
You can look at Mark
chapter 2 verses 1 through 6, and Luke chapter 6
verses 6
through 11.
