Here is your host, Randy Black.
Today, we begin our study of the 37
documented miracles of Jesus.
Our first comes from John chapter 2 verses 1 through 11.
The turning of water into wine at the wedding in Cana.

(01:13):
This miracle is not only a demonstration
of Jesus' divine power,
but also holds important lessons
for us.
Let's open up with prayer.
Dear heavenly father,
thank you for the opportunity to join together and learn from your word.
Please open our hearts and minds as we study the miracle of Jesus turning water into wine so that we can understand its significance

(01:37):
for the time
and our own lives
today.
John chapter 2
verses 1 through 11. And the 3rd day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee,
and the mother of Jesus was there.
And both Jesus was called,
and his disciples to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him,

(02:02):
they have no wine.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants,
whatsoever
he saith unto you,
do it.
And there were set there 6 waterpots of stone,
after the manner of the purifying of the Jews,

(02:22):
containing 2 or 3 Firkins apiece.
Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
And he saith unto them, draw out now and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it, when the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine and knew not whence it was.

(02:43):
But the servants which drew the water knew.
The governor of the feast called the bridegroom
and saith unto him,
'Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine.
And when men have well drunk, then that which is worse,
But thou hast kept the good wine until now.
This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee

(03:07):
and manifested forth his glory.
And his disciples believed on him.
Imagine
a vibrant feast in celebration
of a wedding in the town of Cana.
In Jesus'
time,
weddings were major social events. They often lasted for several days.

(03:29):
Running out of wine at such a celebration like this
would have been considered a major,
huge,
serious social faux pas.
It would bring embarrassment to the hosts, and it would dampen the joy of the occasion.
It's in this context that Jesus performs his first
public
documented miracle.

(03:51):
When Mary, Jesus's mother, informs him of the wine shortage,
Jesus initially responds in verse 4 with what seems like hesitation.
He says, woman,
what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.
Despite this,
Mary instructs the servants to follow any direction that Jesus gives them.

(04:15):
She demonstrated
her faith in his ability to help.
Jesus then moved by compassion
and a desire to preserve the joy of the celebration
decides to intervene.
This shows us that Jesus cares deeply about our needs,
even those that seem minor

(04:36):
or trivial.
Jesus instructs the servants to fill 6
very large stone jars with water. These jars are typically used
in the ceremonial washing
by the Jews, and they hold a significant amount of liquid.
And after filling them to the brim,
Jesus tells the servants to draw some out and take it to the governor of the feast.

(05:01):
To everyone's amazement,
the water has now been transformed
into high quality
wine.
The governor of the feast, unaware
of the source of this wine,
praises the bridegroom
for saving the best
wine
for last.
This miracle is not just about providing wine for a party,

(05:25):
it's Jesus's first public
sign,
revealing his glory and leading his disciples
to believe in him. It symbolizes the transformative
power of Jesus' presence, and it foreshadows the abundant life
he offers
freely.
Just as the water was transformed into its finest wine,

(05:48):
Jesus transforms
our ordinary lives into something extraordinarily
whenever we invite him in.
There are 3 significant lessons for today that we can take
from this miracle and from the scripture.
The first deals with our faith. The story encourages us to have faith in Jesus' ability to intervene

(06:12):
in our lives
no matter the situation.
Just as Mary trusted Jesus,
we too should place our trust in him.
The second deals with our obedience.
The servants at the wedding demonstrated obedience by following Jesus' instructions
without question.
Their actions remind us of the importance of obeying Jesus

(06:36):
even when we don't fully
understand his plans.
And the 3rd deals with abundance.
Jesus didn't just provide wine. He provided the best wine
in abundance.
This speaks to the nature
of his blessings.
He gives generously
and beyond what we expect.

(06:59):
As you go about your day, think about areas in your life
where you need Jesus' intervention.
Are there situations
that seem impossible
or somewhat overwhelming?
Remember
that Jesus is capable
of transforming any circumstance in front of you.

(07:21):
Place your faith in him.
Be obedient
to his guidance
and trust that he will bring abundance
and joy
into your life.
Just as Jesus turned the water into wine, he can transform
our lives in miraculous ways when we invite him in.

(07:42):
May we go forth throughout our day and throughout our life with faith
and obedience,
trusting in his power to bring abundance
and joy
into our lives.
Let us now close out our lesson with a prayer.
Heavenly father, thank you for the lessons we've learned today from the miracle at the wedding in Cana.

(08:06):
Help us to trust in your power, to obey your commands,
and to experience the abundance of life that comes from following you.
In Jesus' name, we pray.
Amen.
