“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21

When someone insults us or frustrates us, it's easy to react in anger. It’s natural to want to defend ourselves or to strike back, especially when we feel hurt or misunderstood. But Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that a soft answer can turn away wrath—meaning our words have the power to calm or escalate a situation. The way we speak and respond to others can either diffuse tension or make things worse.
Romans 12:21 challenges us to overcome evil with good, teaching us that responding with kindness and patience instead of fighting back shows the world the love of Christ in us. In tough moments, choosing gentle words and showing kindness can be one of the most powerful ways to reflect Christ.
How often do we let our feelings dictate our reactions? It can be so tempting to respond harshly when we feel disrespected or misunderstood. But these verses remind us that God’s way is different. When we choose patience and kindness over anger, we reflect His character. It’s not always easy, but God equips us to respond in a way that honors Him and brings peace to the situation.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. Soft answers matter: How do you usually respond when someone speaks harshly to you or annoys you? What would a soft answer look like in that moment?
2. Overcoming with good: Is there someone in your life who has hurt you, and how could you overcome their bad behavior with kindness or good actions?
3. Reflection of Christ: How do your words and actions reflect the love of Christ? In what ways can you be more intentional about showing His love in your interactions?

BOTTOM LINE
God calls us to respond to conflict with kindness, patience, and love. Choosing soft answers instead of harsh words can help bring peace and show others the love of Christ.
