JULY 4 - Slow to Snap, Quick to Shine

3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 19:11; Psalm 76; Luke 4

________________________________________

“Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.” — Proverbs 19:11

“But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused?” — Psalm 76:7

“And Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.”’” — Luke 4:8

Have you ever had someone say something rude or unfair to you, and your first reaction was to fire back? It’s tempting to respond out of anger, especially when we feel disrespected or hurt. But Proverbs 19:11 reminds us that there’s strength in patience. Being slow to anger isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom. In Psalm 76, we’re reminded that even God’s power is measured and purposeful. And in Luke 4, Jesus models self-control when He’s tempted in the wilderness. Instead of reacting emotionally, He responds with truth and focus. That kind of calm strength is something we can grow in too.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. Patience is Power: What happens when you choose to stay calm instead of clapping back? Think of a time when you held your tongue. How did it impact the situation or the way others saw you?

2. God’s Strength, God’s Way: Psalm 76 reminds us that God’s anger isn’t random—it’s just and holy. How can we reflect that kind of measured response in our own lives?

3. Fighting Back with Truth: In Luke 4, Jesus didn’t argue or get defensive. He simply stood on God’s Word. What are some truths you can keep in your heart to help you stay steady when you feel attacked or tempted?

BOTTOM LINE

Being slow to anger and grounded in truth doesn’t make you weak—it shows that you're growing in wisdom, just like Jesus. Real strength is shown in how you choose to respond, not how loud you can react.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us what true strength looks like through Your Word and through the example of Jesus. Help me to be patient, to overlook offenses, and to respond with wisdom and grace. Teach me to fight my battles with truth and to trust You when things get tough. Fill me with Your peace and self-control today. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
