JULY 8 - Tough Love and Unshakable Hope
3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 19:18–19; Psalm 78; Luke 8

Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not set your heart on putting him to death. — Proverbs 19:18
They should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments. — Psalm 78:7
As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. — Luke 8:15

No one loves being corrected—especially when it feels like your freedom is being challenged. Whether it’s your parents, a teacher, or even God through His Word, discipline can sting. But Proverbs 19:18 reminds us that discipline isn’t about punishment—it’s about hope. God’s correction is a sign that He believes in your future. Psalm 78 tells the story of a generation that forgot God’s faithfulness, even after seeing His miracles. When we forget what He’s done, we lose our direction.
Then in Luke 8, Jesus talks about the different kinds of soil, or hearts, that receive God's Word. Only one kind produces lasting fruit—the one that holds on to God’s truth, even when life gets hard. These three passages together show us that God is working to shape us into something better. It won’t always be easy, but it will always be worth it.

THINK ABOUT IT
1. Correction is love: When have you experienced discipline that actually helped you grow? What might God be teaching you in hard moments?
2. Remember God's work: Psalm 78 shows that forgetting God's past faithfulness can lead to poor choices. How can you remind yourself of God’s goodness daily?
3. Rooted in truth: Are you the kind of "soil" that holds onto God’s Word with patience? What helps you stay grounded when life feels chaotic?

BOTTOM LINE
God disciplines us because He loves us, and when we remember His faithfulness and cling to His Word, our lives can produce real, lasting fruit.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me enough to correct me. Help me not to push away the lessons You’re teaching me, but to see them as signs of Your care. Remind me of all the times You’ve come through for me, and give me a heart that holds tightly to Your Word, even when it’s tough. Make my life good soil that grows something beautiful for You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
