JUNE 21 - Humility Before Honor

3-Year-Bible Reading: Proverbs 18:12; Exodus 28

“Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.” — Proverbs 18:12

“And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.” — Exodus 28:2

In Proverbs 18:12, we are reminded of the danger of pride. The verse tells us that before a person’s downfall, they often become prideful. But the opposite, humility, leads to honor. It’s a powerful reminder that putting others first and being humble before God opens the door to true greatness.

In Exodus 28, we see the story of God’s instructions for the garments of the priests, specifically Aaron. The garments are to be made for glory and beauty, symbolizing honor and respect in God’s eyes. However, these garments, while beautiful, were not to be a reflection of Aaron’s own pride or status—they were meant to symbolize his humble service before God and the people. The priest’s true honor came not from the clothes themselves, but from his heart and willingness to serve with humility.

Just like Aaron’s garments were intended for glory and beauty, our actions and hearts are called to reflect God’s honor. True honor comes when we serve others with humility, just as Jesus did. When we allow pride to creep in, it can lead to destruction, but when we humble ourselves before God, He lifts us up in His time.

THINK ABOUT IT

1. The Danger of Pride: How have you seen pride lead to negative outcomes in your life or the lives of others? What are some ways to guard against becoming prideful?

2. Humility Brings Honor: What does humility look like in your day-to-day life? How can you practice humility, even in situations where it might be hard?

3. Serving with Purpose: Aaron’s garments were meant for glory and beauty in service to God. How can your actions reflect God’s glory and honor in your own life?

BOTTOM LINE

True honor comes from humility, not pride. When we humble ourselves before God and serve others, we reflect His glory and receive His honor.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that humility comes before honor. Help me to stay humble in all that I do, and to serve You and others with a heart that seeks Your glory. I pray that You would guard me against pride and help me to always reflect Your love and grace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
