Verse 1 of 1 Peter chapter 1.

(00:02):
Peter, an apostle of JesusChrist to the strangers,
scattered throughout Pontus,Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and
Bithynia.
Now, the apostle Peter waswriting to the saints who were
scattered throughout the RomanEmpire.
They were Jews, called theDiaspora, because they were no

(00:24):
longer in the land of Palestine.
Due to, persecution and otherreasons, they had settled
throughout the empire.
Alright, verse number two.
Elech, according to theforeknowledge of God the Father,
through sanctification of theSpirit, unto obedience and the
sprinkling of the blood of JesusChrist, grace unto you and peace

(00:48):
be multiplied.
Blessed be the God and Father ofour Lord Jesus Christ, which
according to his abundant mercyhave begotten us unto a lively
hope by the resurrection ofJesus Christ from the dead.
Peter emphasizes here theresurrection of Christ.

(01:09):
The resurrection was his greattheme.
on the day of Pentecost and inall his messages.
He said, in effect, all that youhave seen here today is because
Jesus, whom you crucified, cameback from the dead.
And when he writes his epistles,he anchors them in the
resurrection of Christ.

(01:31):
The Apostle Paul does the samething.
He tells us that Jesus Christwas delivered for our offenses.
He died for our sins.
But he was raised for ourjustification that we might be
in Christ, accepted in theBeloved, able to stand before
God.
We stand before God in therighteousness of Jesus Christ.

(01:54):
And we have a living hopebecause of the resurrection of
Jesus Christ.
Because Jesus rose from thegrave with all power in his
hands and is now seated at theright hand of the Father, we are
assured that all of the promisesof God concerning us will be
fulfilled.
Peter describes to us what Godhas done for us in the past.

(02:17):
Now he moves into the future.
Look at verse number four.
To an inheritance incorruptibleand undefiled, and that faded
not away, reserved in heaven foryou.
Now here he talks about ourinheritance that awaits us on
the other side.
And he lists four things, concerning our inheritance.

(02:40):
Number one, our inheritance isincorruptible.
In other words, nondestructible.
In other words, nondestructible.
Number two, our inheritance isundefiled.
in other words, it is pure.
Number three, our inheritancefades not away.
It don't disappear.
It is ours forever.
number four, our inheritance isreserved in heaven for us.

(03:06):
Now the word reserved means itis guarded.
God, the Father, God, the Son,and God, the Holy Spirit are
taking care of it for us.
All right, verse number five, who are kept by the power of God
through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last
time.

(03:26):
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need
be, ye are in heaviness throughmanifold temptations.
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of
gold, that perishes, though itbe tried with fire, might be
found unto praise, and honor, and glory, at the appearing of

(03:47):
Jesus Christ.
Now he says here that the trialof your faith, being much more
precious than of gold.
Listen, after gold is mined, itis put into a hot furnace.
The purpose is not to destroythe gold, but rather to purify
the gold.
When the gold is melted, thedross is drawn off to get the

(04:09):
pure gold.
When God tests us today, He putsus into the furnace.
He doesn't do that to destroy usor to hurt or harm us, but He
wants pure gold, and that is theway He gets it done.
The only thing that will bringus into a true maturation is the
trial of our fate, which Godsends to us.

(04:32):
And I believe that at theappearing of Jesus Christ, we
will thank God for our trials.
In fact, we may wish we hadexperienced more of them because
when we are in His presence, wewill see the value of our
trials.
Verse number 8, Whom having notseen, ye laugh, in whom though

(04:56):
now ye see him not, yetbelieving, ye rejoice with joy
unspeakable, and full of glory, receiving the end of your fate,
even the salvation of yoursouls, of which salvation the
prophets have inquired andsearched diligently.
Who prophesied of the grace thatshould come unto you, searching

(05:16):
what or what manner of time theSpirit of Christ, which was in
them did signify, when ittestified beforehand the
sufferings of Christ, and theglory that should follow.
Unto whom it was revealed, thatnot unto themselves, but unto us
they did minister the thingswhich are now reported unto you
by them that have preached thegospel unto you with the Holy

(05:39):
Ghost sent down from heaven, which things the angels desire
to look into.
Well, for gird up the loins ofyour mind, be sober and hope to
the end, for the grace that isto be brought unto you at the
revelation of Jesus Christ.
As obedient children, notfashioning yourselves according
to the former lusts in yourignorance.

(06:01):
But as he which hath called youis holy, so be ye holy in all
manner of conversation.
Because it is written, Be yeholy, for I am holy.
And if you call on the Father.
Who, without respect of persons, judges are calling to every
man's work, past the time ofyour sojourning here in fear.

(06:23):
Let me read these same versesfrom the Living Bible, which
makes it clearer.
You love him even though youhave never seen him.
Though not seeing Him, you trustHim, and even now you are happy
with the inexpressible joy thatcomes from Heaven itself, and
your further reward for trustingHim will be the salvation of
your souls.
This salvation was something theprophets did not fully

(06:46):
understand, though they wroteabout it.
they had many questions as towhat it all could mean.
They wondered what the Spirit ofChrist.
Within them was talking aboutfor he told them to write down
the events, which since thenhave happened to Christ, his
suffering and his great gloryafterwards.
And they wondered when and towhom all this would happen.

(07:08):
they were finally told thatthese things would not occur
during their lifetime.
But long years later doing yoursand now at last this good news
has been plainly announced toall of us.
It was preached to us in thepower of the same heaven sent
Holy Spirit who spoke to themAnd it is all so strange and

(07:28):
wonderful that even the angelsin heaven would give a great
deal to know more about it.
So now you can look forwardsoberly and intelligently to
more of God's kindness to youwhen Jesus Christ returns.
Obey God because you are hischildren.
Don't slip back into your oldways doing evil because you no

(07:49):
better.
Be ye holy now in everything youdo.
Just as the Lord is holy, whoinvited you to be his child, he
himself has said, you must beholy for I am holy.
And remember that your heavenlyfather to whom you pray has no
favorites when he judges.
He will judge you with perfectjustice for everything you do.

(08:10):
So act in reverent fear of himfrom now on until you get to
heaven.
Oh, I like that.
Well said.
All right.
Verse number 18.
For as much as you know that youwere not redeemed with
corruptible things as silver andgold from your vain conversation
received by tradition from yourfathers, but with the precious

(08:33):
blood of Christ, as of a lambwithout blemish and without spot
who verily was foreordainedbefore the foundation of the
world, but was manifest in theselast times.
for you who by him do believe inGod that raised him up from the
dead and gave him glory thatyour faith and hope might be in

(08:55):
God.
Now, the phrase here, thatraised him up from the dead.
The Apostle Peter keepsreminding us of the resurrection
of Christ.
He also says here that yourfaith and hope might be in God.
Now, previously he puts togetherthe words grace and hope.
Now it is faith and hope.

(09:16):
Peter is the great apostle ofhope.
And hope rests upon theresurrection of Christ and upon
the fact that we have a livingSavior who will be returning
someday.
and when he does, we shall bechanged in a moment, in a
twinkle of an eye, and we shallbe just like him.
Verse 22.

(09:37):
Seeing ye have purified yoursouls in obeying the truth,
Through the spirit unto unfingedlove of the brethren, see that
ye love one another with a pureheart, fervently, being born
again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the
word of God, which liveth andabideth forever.

(10:01):
For all flesh is as grass, andall the glory of man as the
flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and theflowers thereof away.
But the word of the Lordendureth forever, and this is
the word which by the gospel ispreached unto you.
Now, he says here, See to itthat we love each other with a

(10:24):
pure heart.
How fervently! Don't do it halfheartedly, do it fervently.
In Romans chapter 12 and verse9, the Apostle Paul says, let
love be without dissimilation.
In other words, let love bewithout hypocrisy.
Listen, man looks on theoutside, but God looks at and
judges us by our heart.

(10:45):
Peter instructs us here to lovelike God loves, because we are
new creatures.
We have been born again, not, through our mother's womb again,
but from above.
And this process started withthe hearing of God's Word, which
is alive and abides forever.
Listen, you cannot be saved, youcannot be born again, apart from
the Word of God.

(11:06):
Faith comes by hearing, andhearing of the Word of God,
which in turn brings salvationTo a person's life.
He goes on to say that we arenothing without God.
Our flesh, their bodies are asgrass.
We are handsome or we arebeautiful for a little while.
Then we become old and wrinkleand we die.
But the word of God just keepgoing and going.

(11:30):
It is forever.
It abides forever.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
