Chapter 5, verse 1.
(00:01):
Now, in this final chapter of 1Peter, Suffering and the second
coming of Christ are broughttogether.
What is the relation of oursuffering to the second coming
of Christ?
The Christian life began foreach of us, with the suffering
of the Lord Jesus Christ on thecross, where he bore the penalty
of our sins.
There is also suffering in thelife of the child of God today
(00:25):
because God uses suffering inour lives to sharpen us and to
make us the kind of Christiansthat He wants and that He can
use.
Alright, let's look at versenumber one.
The elders, which are among youI exhort, who am also an elder.
And a witness of the sufferingsof Christ, and also a partaker
(00:48):
of the glory that shall berevealed.
Feed the flock of God, which isamong you, taking the oversight
thereof, not by constraint, butwillingly, not for filthy
lucrous, but of a ready mind.
Now he says here, not for, filthy lucrous.
But I've already met Peter makesit clear that an elder or a
(01:10):
pastor or bishop must possessthe right reason the right
spirit and the right motive forservice.
It is not to be for materialgain, but for.
The sheer delight of just doingit because that's who you are.
An elder is to find satisfactionin the job itself rather than
(01:32):
what he can get out of it.
Let me say it again.
An elder is to find satisfactionin the job itself rather than in
what he can get out of it.
All right?
Verse number three.
Neither as being lords overGod's heritage, but being
ensamples to the flock.
(01:53):
In other words, an elder pastoror bishop should exercise his
ministry in the right manner.
Not driving, but leading.
Not domineering, but setting anexample.
Listen, it is a work, therefore,in which he ought to be an
example to the flock.
(02:14):
All right, verse number four,And when the chief shepherd
shall appear, ye shall receive acrown of glory that faded not
away.
Listen, an elder's ministryshould be done with the proper
awareness that he serves thechief shepherd to whom he will
have to answer to.
And if we as elders do the jobaccording to the way God wants
(02:36):
us to.
He will reward us with a crownof glory.
Listen, never get the impressionthat we are working for nothing.
None of God's children areworking for nothing.
We are all working to receiverewards at the judgment seat of
Christ.
Alright, let's look at versenumber 5.
(02:57):
Likewise, ye younger, submityourselves unto the elder.
Yea, all of you be subject oneto another.
And be clothed with humility, for God resists the proud, and
give it grace to the humble.
Now here in this verse, Petertells the young people to
respect their elders.
To submit to their elders.
(03:18):
But he also says for everyone tosubmit to one another.
So elders, you are also tosubmit to the younger.
We ought to submit ourselves toone another.
And we ought to dress up inhumility.
Put it on, I mean, be fullyclothed in humility.
Why?
Because God resists the proud.
(03:38):
God don't have time for proudChristians.
But God gives grace to those whoare humble before Him.
then verse 6 says this, Humbleyourselves, therefore, under the
mighty hand of God, that He mayexalt you in due time.
Jesus said in the Gospel, If youhumble yourself, you will be
exalted.
If you exalt yourself, you willbe obese.
If we humble ourselves under themighty hand of God, God will
(04:01):
exalt us.
I'm telling you, there is no onethat can promote, there is no
one that can exalt like God.
He will do it, and He's going todo it in due time.
Just hang on in there.
Keep doing well, keep doing whatyou're doing for Jesus Christ,
and God will exalt you in duetime.
(04:22):
And verse 7 says, Casting allyour care upon him, for he
carried for you.
He cares for you literally meansthat it matters to him
concerning you.
Peter says here for us to takeall of our problems to God the
Father for he cares about us.
Paul told the Philippianbelievers worry about nothing,
pray about everything.
(04:42):
That is take it to the Lord inprayer and leave it there.
Don't pick it up again.
Alright?
Verse number 8.
Be sober.
Be vigilant.
Because your adversary, thedevil, has a roaring lion
walking about, seeking whom hemay devour.
Whom resists steadfast in thefaith, knowing that the same
(05:06):
afflictions are accomplished inyour brethren that are in hell.
The world, but the God of allgrace who had called us unto his
eternal glory by Christ Jesus.
After that, you have suffered awhile.
Make you perfect, established, strengthened, settle you.
Let me read this from the livingBible.
(05:27):
these three verses here, beginning with verse number
eight, be careful, watch out forattacks.
from Satan, your great enemy.
He prowls around like a hungryroaring lion, looking for some
victim to tear apart.
Stand firm when he attacks.
Trust the Lord and remember thatother Christians all around the
(05:50):
world are going through thesesufferings too.
After you have suffered a littlewhile, our God, who is full of
kindness through Christ, willgive you his eternal glory.
He will personally Come and pickyou up and set you firmly in
place and make you stronger thanever.
(06:10):
Oh, I like that.
Verse 11, to him be glory anddominion forever and ever.
Amen.
By Savannas, a faithful brotherunto you as I suppose, I have
written briefly exhorting andtestifying that this is the true
grace of God, wherein ye stand.
(06:30):
The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you,
saluted you, and so do Marcus,my son.
Greet ye one another with a kissof charity.
Peace be with you all that arein Christ Jesus.
Amen.
Marcus here is John Mark, who isthe writer of the Gospel of
Mark.
He was not Peter's natural son,but he was Peter's son in the
(06:54):
faith.
All right.
Greet ye one another with a kissof charity.
Well, I say this due to the factof our culture, which is
different from the culture ofPeter here.
I think a handshake instead isthe best means of Christian
greed.
Then Peter finished this letterby saying, peace be with you,
(07:16):
all that are in Christ Jesus.
Amen.
