(00:00):
Peter's second epistle waswritten about AD 66, shortly

(00:05):
after his first epistle and ashort while before his death.
There are striking similaritiesbetween 2 Peter and 2 Timothy.
Both epistles warn us of theapostasy that was to come.
Both Peter and Paul speak in ajoyful manner of their

(00:29):
approaching deaths.
Paul said that he knew that thetime of his departure had come.
He had finished his course.
He had fought a good fight, andhe had kept the faith.
A crown of righteousness waslaid up for him.
You will find that sametriumphant note here in 2 Peter,

(00:51):
as Peter also faced the prospectof death.
Both Apostles anchor the Churchon the Scriptures, on the Word
of God, as the only defenseagainst the coming storm of
apostasy.
Peter will show us how towithstand the apostasy, and that

(01:11):
is, through knowledge.
Not only through faith inChrist, not only believing in
Him, but also, To know Christ.
The great subject of thisepistle is going to be not only
the apostasy but also trulygetting to know Christ.
Now where is this knowledge andhow does it come to us?

(01:34):
Peter lets us know thatknowledge comes through the Word
of God.
The more we spend time in God'sWord, the more of the knowledge
of God.
We receive, and the more welearn about him and the more of
God's word we apply to ourlives, the more we become like

(01:55):
him.
This is how we get to know him.
You see, the Christian life ismore than just being born again.
It's about growth anddevelopment.
The key to the entire epistle isthe last verse, which says, but
grow in grace and in theknowledge of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ.

(02:16):
To Him be glory, both now andforever.
Amen.
And on this wonderful note, letus begin our journey through
this great epistle.
2 Peter chapter 1, and let usbegin with verse number 1.
Simon Peter, a servant and anapostle of Jesus Christ, to them

(02:39):
that have obtained, likeprecious fate, With us through
the righteousness of God and ofour Savior, Jesus Christ.
Now, Peter calls himself herethe servant of Jesus Christ.
The word servant here is doulos,d o u l o s, which really means

(03:00):
slave.
Here is a title, one ofhumiliation, which the greatest
of men took as a title ofgreatest honor.
Moses, the great leader andlawgiver, was the servant of
God.
Joshua, the great commander, wasthe servant of God.

(03:21):
David, the greatest of thekings, was the servant of God.
In the New Testament, Paul isthe servant of Jesus Christ.
A servant is a title that bothJames and Jude Proudly claimed.
In the Old Testament, theprophets are the servants of
God.
And in the New Testament, theChristians are the servants of

(03:43):
God.
There is deep meaning here.
A servant of God is one whototally belonged to God.
It is one who owes andunquestioning obedience to God.
Listen, a master's command was aslave's only law.
In ancient times, in anysituation, the Christian has but

(04:07):
one question to ask, and thatis, Lord, what will you have me
do?
Alright, look at verse numbertwo.
Grace and peace be multipliedunto you through the knowledge
of God and of Jesus our Lord.
Now he says, grace and peace bemultiplied.

(04:28):
Grace and peace are always inthis order.
Grace always precedes peace.
We must first know the grace ofGod, before We can experience
the peace of God.
We must first know the grace ofGod, that God has saved us.
Not through our merit, or ourcharacter, or because of
anything in us.

(04:48):
But He has saved us because ofHis love for us.
He loved us enough to die for uson the cross, to pay the penalty
of our sins, which made itpossible for Him to reach down
and save us.
We were saved by the grace ofGod.
And once you experience thegrace of God, you then
experience the peace of God.

(05:09):
Paul says this in Romans chapter5 and verse 1, Therefore being
justified by faith we have peacewith God through our Lord Jesus
Christ.
Now how is the grace and peaceof God multiplied in one's life?
How does it continue to increasein one's life?
The answer is simple.

(05:30):
Through the knowledge of God andof Jesus, our Lord.
All right, verse number three, according as his divine power
had given unto us all thingsthat pertain unto life and
godliness through the knowledgeof him that had called us to
glory and virtue.

(05:53):
Now always remember thatChrist's love is backed by his
power and is therefore avictorious love.
He bestows on us all thingsnecessary for successful living.
Peter is saying that JesusChrist tells us what life feels
and then enables us to live itas it ought to be lived.

(06:13):
God has given us the power tolive holy, and as we grow in the
knowledge of God, we become moreand more like Him.
God has called us to glory andvirtue.
In other words, God has calledus to be like Him, and He has
called us to excellence andcourage.

(06:34):
The word virtue means you havethe courage to excel in life.
And glory is the very essence ofGod.
God has called us to operate inHis glory, His power to shine in
this dark world, showing forthHim walking in excellence.

(06:56):
All right, look at verse numberfour, whereby, or given unto us,
exceeding great and preciouspromises, that by these ye might
be partakers of the divinenature, having escaped the
corruption that is in the worldthrough sin.
Listen, all the promises of Godare yay and amen.
And we see here that God hasgiven us some exceeding great

(07:20):
and precious promises.
We are partakers of His divinenature and we have a new way of
living.
Alright, verse 5.
And besides this, given alldiligence, add to your fate
virtue.
And to virtue, knowledge.
And to knowledge, temperance.

(07:40):
And to temperance, patience.
And to patience, godliness.
And to godliness, brotherlykindness.
And to brotherly kindness,charity.
Listen, the Christian life isabout growing and developing in
God.
We must take our Christian lifevery serious.
Peter instructs us to give alldiligence to our Christian life.

(08:04):
In other words, we ought to giveGod our best effort all day,
every day.
And Peter lists the different, attributes which ought to
characterize our growth.
He begins by saying, add to yourfate virtue.
Now, down through the centuries, some English words have changed

(08:25):
their meanings and virtue is oneof them.
Virtue to the Romans of thefirst century meant much more
than chastity.
It characterized the very finestRoman manhood, which was
strength, valor, courage, andexcellence.
Peter is saying here, listen, have the courage to stand for

(08:46):
that which is right and to standup and be counted for God.
Therefore, Peter is saying, addto your faith, courage.
Then he says to add to yourvirtue, knowledge.
There is a saying, the more youknow, the further you will go.
Listen, this is the true sayingacross the board.
The more you know in life, thefurther you will go in life.

(09:10):
By the same token, the more youknow of God's word, the more you
will grow in God.
God wants us to grow in Him.
Then Peter instructs us to addtemperance to our knowledge.
In other words, we ought to beself controlled in every area of
our lives.

(09:30):
Then he says, add patience toour temperance.
Patience is being able to endurewhen trials come.
Patience is endurance.
It is built upon knowledge andcourage.
Like a growing tree, a Christianshould be developing.
courage, knowledge, selfcontrol, and endurance.
And then we ought to addgodliness to our patience.

(09:54):
Godliness means to be like God.
Then add to godliness, brotherlykindness.
We ought to be kind heartedpeople.
We are to show forth kindness, and to brotherly kindness,
charity, which is the greatestof all, the love of God.
We are to show forth the love ofGod in this earth.
verse 8.

(10:17):
For if these things be in youand abound, they make you that
ye shall neither be barren norunfruitful in the knowledge of
our Lord Jesus Christ.
But he that lacketh these thingsis blind, and cannot see afarth,
and hath forgotten that he waspurged from his old sins.

(10:39):
While for the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your
calling and election sure.
For if ye do these things, yeshall never fall.
For soul and interest shall beministered unto you abundantly
into the everlasting kingdom ofour Lord and Savior, Jesus

(10:59):
Christ.
Listen, Peter is simply sayinghere, make sure that your life
lines up with your profession ofbeing a Christian.
The word Christian means Christlike.
Every time you tell someone thatyou are a Christian, you are
saying that you are Christ like.
Now, if Your action do not lineup with your words, then you

(11:21):
need to check yourself.
If you constantly checkyourself, making sure that your
life lines up with the word ofGod, then you shall never fall.
First of all, you have to besure of your salvation.
You have to know without a doubtthat your salvation is eternal.
Too many of God's people arehoping to make it in rather than

(11:42):
knowing that they will make itin.
When you truly come to anunderstanding that your
salvation is forever, you willgive all diligence in producing
a life that is pleasing to God.
Alright, look at verse 12.
Wherefore, I will not benegligent to put you always in

(12:04):
remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be
established in the presenttruth.
Yea, I think it meet, as long asI am in this tabernacle.
To stir you up by putting you inremembrance, knowing that
shortly I must put off thistabernacle, even as our Lord

(12:25):
Jesus Christ has showed me.
Moreover, I will endeavor thatye may be able, after my
decease, to have these thingsalways in remembrance.
Peter says here, listen, as longas I am with you in the flesh, I
will constantly remind you ofthese important things you must

(12:47):
do.
He goes on to say that in alittle while, he would depart
from this life.
And he knows this because Jesushad already showed him.
And he says, even after I amgone, I want you to continue to
do the things I have taught you.
Alright, verse 16.
For we have not followed kindlydevised fables.

(13:10):
When we made known unto you thepower and coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ, but wereeyewitnesses of his majesty.
I like that.
We were eyewitnesses of hismajesty.
For he received from God theFather honor and glory when
there came such a voice to himfrom the excellent glory.

(13:32):
This is my beloved son in whom Iam well pleased.
And this voice which came fromheaven we heard when we were
with him in the holy mount.
Now here Peter speaks about hisexperience with Jesus, which is
recorded in Matthew chapter 17verses 1 through 2, which reads,

(13:56):
And after six days Jesus takenPeter, James, and John his
brother, and bringing them upinto a high mountain apart, and
was transfigured before them.
And his face did shine as thesun, and his raiment was white
as the light.
Peter says here that they wereeyewitnesses of his majesty.

(14:18):
They saw it first hand.
What a testimony.
What a testimony.
Alright, look at verse 19.
we have also a more sure word ofprophecy.
Where unto you do well that yetake heed as unto a light that
shineth in a dark place untilthe day dawn.
And the day star arise in yourhearts.

(14:42):
Know in this first that noprophecy of the scripture is of
any private invitation.
For the prophecy came not in oldtime by the will of man but holy
men of God spake as they weremoved by the Holy Ghost let me
read these verses from theLiving Bible.

(15:03):
It says, So we have seen andproved that what the prophets
said came true.
You will do well to pay closeattention to everything they
have written.
For like lights shining intodark corners, their words help
us to understand many thingsthat otherwise would be dark and

(15:24):
difficult.
But when you consider thewonderful truth of the prophet's
words, then the light will dawnin your souls, and Christ the
morning star will shine in yourhearts.
For no prophecy recorded inscripture was ever thought up by
the prophet himself.
It was the Holy Spirit withinthese godly men who gave them

(15:45):
true messages of peace.
