(00:00):
Chapter three and verse one.
This second epistle, beloved,I'll now write unto you in both
which I stir up your pure mindsby way of remembrance, that ye
may be mindful of the wordswhich were spoken before by the
holy prophets and of thecommandments of us, the apostles

(00:20):
of the Lord and Savior.
We see here that Peter isdefinitely the writer of both
epistles.
Alright, and then he says, Iwant to keep before you the word
of God written by the prophetsbefore us and the words of Jesus
that was given to us by him andlater given to you by us, the

(00:42):
apostles of Jesus Christ.
I want you all to keep the wordof God ever before you.
Verse 3, Knowing this first, that thou shalt come in the last
days, scoffers, walking aftertheir own lusts, and saying,
Where is the promise of hiscoming?

(01:02):
For since the fathers fellasleep, all things continue as
they were from the beginning ofthe creation.
For this they willingly areignorant of, that by the word of
God the heavens were of old, andthe earth, standing out of the
water, and in the water, wherebythe world that then was, being

(01:23):
overflowed with water, perished.
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word
are kept in store, reserved untofire.
Against the day of judgment andprediction of ungodly men.
But beloved, be not ignorant ofthis one thing, that one day is

(01:44):
with the Lord as a thousandyears, and a thousand years as
one day.
The Lord is not slack concerninghis promise, as some men count
slackness, but is longsufferingto usward, not willing that any
should perish, but that allshould come to repentance.
But the day of the Lord willcome as a thief in the night.

(02:05):
In the wish, the heavens shallpass away with a great noise,
and the elements shall melt withfervent heat.
The earth also and the worksthat are therein shall be burned
up.
Now let me read these versesfrom the Living Bible which
makes it very plain.
Verse 3 from the Living Bible.
It says, First I want to remindyou that in the last days there

(02:27):
will come scoffers.
who will do every wrong they canthink of and laugh at the truth.
This will be their line ofargument.
So Jesus promised to come back, huh?
Did he?
Then where is he?
He'll never come.
Why?
As far back as anyone canremember, everything has
remained exactly as it was sincethe first day of creation.

(02:50):
They deliberately forget thisfact that God did destroy the
world with a mighty flood longafter he had made the heavens by
the word of his command and hadused the waters to form the
earth and surround it.
And God has commanded that theearth and the heavens be stored
away for a great bonfire at thejudgment day when all ungodly

(03:14):
men will perish.
But don't forget this, dearfriends, that a day A thousand
years from now is like tomorrowto the Lord.
He isn't really being slow abouthis promised return, even though
it's sometimes seen that way.
But he is waiting, for the goodreason that he is not willing
that any should perish, and heis giving more time for sinners

(03:39):
to repent.
The day of the Lord is surelycoming, as unexpectedly as a
thief, and then the heavens willpass away, with a Terrible noise
and the heavenly bodies woulddisappear in fire and the earth
and everything on it would beburned up.

(03:59):
Alright, verse 11.
Seeing then that all thesethings shall be dissolved, what
manner of persons ought ye to bein all holy conversation and
godliness?
Reading from the Living Bible, and it says, And so since
everything around us is going tomelt away, what holy, godly

(04:19):
lives we should be living?
Verse 12, Looking for andhasting unto the coming of the
day of God, wherein the heavensbeing on fire shall be
dissolved, and the elementsshall melt with fervent heat.
Verse Now Peter speaks of theChristian as not only being
eagerly awaiting the coming ofChrist, but also hastening it

(04:43):
on.
The New Testament shows us, twoways in which we can hasten the
coming of Christ.
Number one, it may be done byprayer.
Jesus taught us to pray.
Thy kingdom come.
In Matthew chapter 6 and verse10.
The other way is by preachingthe gospel of Jesus Christ.
Matthew chapter 24 and verse 14says this, And this gospel of

(05:05):
the kingdom will be preachedthroughout the whole world as a
testimony to all nations andthen the end will come.
Alright, verse 13.
Nevertheless, we, according tohis promise, look for new
heavens.
And a new Earth wherein dwell itrighteousness.

(05:25):
Listen, righteousness does notdwell or is not at home in this
earth today.
we are righteous in this earth, but, righteousness does not
dwell in this earth today.
It is not at home in Washington,D.
C.
It is not at home in any of thecapitals of the world.
Oh, but the day is coming whenrighteousness will be at home in

(05:47):
the new earth and in the newheavens.
God has a new model.
Of the earth coming on.
And I would be glad when itarrives, it would be a wonderful
earth because it would becharacterized by righteousness.
Right now, the ungodly rules, but on the new Earth, Jesus will
set up a righteous rule.

(06:08):
He will set up his kingdom, akingdom of righteousness and a
kingdom of peace for 1000 years.
I'm so excited.
I can't wait.
Oh, glory to God.
Alright, verse 14, Well forbeloved, seeing that ye look for
such things, be diligent, thatye may be found of him in peace
without spot, and blameless, andaccount that the longsuffering

(06:32):
of our Lord is salvation, evenas our beloved brother Paul also
according to the wisdom givenunto him hath written unto you.
Now, the longsuffering of ourLord is salvation.
In other words, His patience indelaying His return in judgment
is providing an opportunity formen to be saved.

(06:55):
Again, the phrase, thelongsuffering of our Lord is
salvation, means God's patiencein delaying His return.
Injudgment is providing anopportunity for men to be saved.
Listen, God is in heaven.
Things are not right in theworld, but he is going to make

(07:16):
them right someday.
This is the message of the NewTestament.
And Peter reminds us that Paulalso wrote concerning this.
Alright, verse 16.
And also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these
things, in which are some thingshard to be understood.
Which they that are unlearnedand unstable rest, they rast, in

(07:38):
other words, they rastle with,as they do also the other
scriptures unto their owndestructions.
Ye thou full beloved, seeing yeknow these things before, beware
lest ye also being led away withthe error of the wicked, fall
from your own steadfastness, butgrow in grace.
And in the knowledge of our Lordand Savior Jesus Christ, to Him

(08:01):
be glory both now and forever.
Amen.
In conclusion, Peter tells uscertain things about the
Christian life.
Number one, the Christian is aman who is forewarned.
In other words, he cannot pleadignorance.
He knows the right way and itsrewards.
He knows the wrong way and it'sdisastrous.

(08:23):
He has no right to expect aneasy way for he has been told
that Christianity means a cross.
It means a cross.
You got to carry your cross.
And he has been warned thatthere will always be those who
are ready to attack and topervert the faith.
To be forewarned is to beforearmed, but to be forewarned

(08:44):
is also a grave responsibility, for he who knows the right and
does the wrong is under a doublecondemnation.
The second thing is that theChristian is a man with a basis
for life.
He ought to be rooted andfounded in the faith.
There are certain things ofwhich he is absolutely certain.

(09:05):
James Agate once declared thathis mind was not a bed to be
made and remade, but that oncertain things it was finally
made up.
Listen, there is a certaininflexibility, there is a
certain inflexibility in theChristian life.
There is a certain basis ofbelief which should never

(09:26):
change.
The Christian will never ceaseto believe that Jesus Christ is
Lord.
Hallelujah.
The Christian will never ceaseto believe that Jesus Christ is
Lord.
And he will never cease to beaware that there is laid on him
the duty of making his life fithis belief.

(09:48):
Your profession must match youractions.
And number three, the Christianis a man or woman with a
developing life.
The Christian must dailyexperience the wonder of grace
and daily grow in the giftswhich grace can bring.
And he must daily Enter more andmore deeply into the wonder,

(10:09):
which is in Jesus Christ.
It is only on a firm foundationthat a great building can tower
into the air and is, and it isonly because it has deep root
that a great tree can reach outto the sky with its branches.
The Christian life is at once alife with a firm foundation and
with an ever outward and upwardgrowth.

(10:33):
Listen, only as we spend timewith Him, as He is revealed in
His Word, can we grow in ourknowledge of Him.
And so the letter finishes bygiving glory to Christ, both now
and forever.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
