(00:00):
We now come to the final letterof John, the third John.
(00:04):
This letter was written toindividuals.
The Apostle John expresses hisdesire for Gaius to have an all
around prosperous life.
His greatest joy was to knowthat the children of God were
walking in the truth.
And on this note, let us begin.
The elder until the well BelovedGaas, whom I love in the truth,
(00:26):
beloved, I wish above all thingsthat thou Mays prosper and be in
held, even as thy so prosper.
Now, John's third letter isaddressed to Brother Gaas.
John's desire for Gaius is God'sdesire for all of his children,
and that is for us to prosperspiritually, financially, and
(00:46):
physically.
Gaius was prosperingspiritually, but lacked in
finances and apparently didn'thave the best of health.
Alright, let's look at verses 3and 4.
For I rejoiced greatly when thebrethren came and testified of
the truth that is in thee, evenas thou walkest in the truth.
I have no greater joy than tohear that my children walk in
(01:08):
truth.
Now John rejoiced after hearingthe news that Gaels and
believers scattered throughoutAsia were walking in the truth.
They were still following theapostles doctrine and walking in
the love of God.
Alright, let's look at verses 5through 8.
Beloved, thou doest faithfullywhatsoever thou doest to the
brethren and to strangers, whichhave borne witness of thy
(01:31):
charity before the church, whom,if thou bring forward on their
journey after a godless sort, thou shalt do well, because that
for his name's sake they wentforth taking nothing of the
Gentiles.
We therefore ought to receivesuch, that we might be fellow
helpers to the truth.
Now John praises Gaius.
for his help and support of themissionaries of the faith.
(01:54):
He encourages him to continuethe good work.
These missionaries gave up theirjobs, home, and comfort to bring
the word of God throughout theworld.
John says to Gaius, By helpingthem, we ourselves are fellow
workers in the truth.
I like the way anothertranslation reads, uh, verse 8.
It says, We are bound to supportsuch men to prove ourselves, or
(02:16):
we become allies of the truth.
The church needs those who willgo out throughout the world with
the truth, but it also needsthose who will be allies of the
truth at home.
Alright, verses 9 and 10.
I wrote unto the church, butDiotrephes, who loveth to have
(02:36):
the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
Wherefore, if I come, I willremember his deeds, which he
doeth, praying against us withmalicious words, and not content
thou with.
Neither doeth he himself receivethe brethren, and forbiddeth
them that would, and casteththem out of the church.
Now, Diotrephes was a leader whowas all about himself.
(02:58):
It was his way or the highway.
He refused to obey John andanybody in the assembly where he
was located at who attempted toreceive the missionaries, he
would throw them out of theassembly.
My God.
Alright, let's look at verses 11through 14.
Beloved, follow not that whichis evil, but that which is good.
He that doeth good is of God,but he that doeth evil hath not
(03:19):
seen God.
Demetrius had good report of allmen, and of the truth itself.
Yea, and we also bear record, and ye know that our record is
true.
I have many things to write, butI will not with ink and pen
write unto thee.
But I trust I shall shortly seethee, and we shall speak face to
face.
Peace be to thee.
(03:40):
Greet the friends by name.
John spoke very well concerningDemetrius to Gaius.
He praised him for the goodreport he had of all men.
Then he tells Gaius that's allhe was going to write.
The rest he would tell him inperson.
