Chapter 2, verses 1 and 2.
My little children.
These things write I unto youthat ye sin not.
And if any man sin, we have anadvocate with the Father, Jesus
Christ the righteous.
And he is the propitiation forour sins.
And not for ours only, but alsofor the sins of the whole world.

(00:20):
Now we see clearly here that itis not the will of God for us to
sin.
Paul says this in Romans chapter6 verses 1 and 2.
What shall we say then?
Shall we continue in sin thatgrace may abound?
God forbid! How shall we thatare dead to sin live any longer
therein?
We have the nature of God now.
And the nature of God causes usto hate sin with a passion.

(00:44):
But in the event we do sin, Godhas already made provision for
us to receive forgiveness.
We have an advocate with theFather.
who is he?
He is Jesus Christ therighteous.
An advocate means one who willcome to your side to help in
every time of need.
Satan is the accuser of theBrethren.

(01:05):
Revelation chapter 12 and verse10 tells us that Satan accuses
us before the Father day andnight.
But the good news is that everytime he accuses us to the
Father, Jesus, our greatadvocate, steps in and defends
us.
And know of a surety that thefather always listens and
adheres to his son.
Whatever Jesus says goes.

(01:27):
This is why it is impossible forus to be destroyed by the enemy.
Jesus is the sacrificial lambwho took on our sins, suffered
and died for us so that we couldobtain eternal life.
And he is also the sacrificiallamb for the whole world.
All right.
Verses three through six.

(01:47):
And hereby we do know that weknow him if we keep his
commandments.
He that said, I know him, andkeep it not his commandments, is
a liar, and the truth is not inhim.
But whoso keepeth his word, inhim verily is the love of God
perfected.
Hereby know we that we are inhim.
He that said he abided in him, ought himself also so to walk,

(02:10):
even as The only way in which wecan show that we know God is by
obedience to him.
The way we show the world wehave union with Christ is by
imitation of him.
Christianity offers the greatestprivilege and brings with it the
greatest obligation.
John says something that is veryinteresting here.

(02:31):
He says that whoso keeps hisword in him verily is the love
of God perfected.
Now, the word perfected meansmatured.
How does the love of God, whichis shed in our hearts by the
Holy Spirit, grow to maturity?
It is done by walking in thelight of God's word.
Jesus says this in John'sGospel, chapter 14 and verse 15,

(02:52):
If you love me, keep my hand.
Commandments.
The more of his word we walk in,the more the love of God grows
within us.
And the one who cultivates andbrings, God's love in his heart
to maturity is the one who keepsGod's word.
The psalmist said, Thy word haveI hid in mine heart, that I
might not sin against thee.
Alright, let's look at verses 7and 8.

(03:15):
Brethren, I write no newcommandment unto you, but an old
commandment which ye have heardfrom the beginning.
The old commandment is the wordwhich ye have heard from the
beginning.
Again, a new commandment I writeunto you.
Which thing is true in him andin you?
Because the darkness is past andthe true light now shineth.
Now what commandment is Johnreferring to?

(03:36):
He is referring to thecommandment of love.
Or rather, the commandment tolove.
Leviticus chapter 19 and verse18 reads, Thou shalt love thy
neighbor as thyself.
John's gospel 13 and 34 reads, Anew commandment I give to you,
That you love one another as Ihave loved you, That ye also
love one another.

(03:58):
So we see that this commandmentto love was both old and new.
It was old in the sense that itwas given a long time before
Jesus came in the flesh to theearth.
It was new in that it had beenraised to a completely new
standard in the life of Jesus.
And it is as Jesus has loved manthat we now are to love one

(04:19):
another.
All right, let's look at verses9 through 11.
He that said he is in the lightand hated his brother is in
darkness even until now.
He that loved his brother abidedin the light and there is none
occasion of stumbling in him.
But he that hated his brother isin darkness and walking in
darkness and knoweth not whitherhe goeth because that darkness

(04:40):
hath blinded his eyes.
It is as simple as this.
No one is fit to give a verdicton anything while he has hatred
in his heart.
And no man can rightly directhis own life when hatred
dominates him.
Hatred makes a man blind.
In other words, when a man hashatred in his heart, his powers
of judgment are obscured.

(05:02):
He cannot see an issue clearly.
Love, on the other hand, causesa man to walk in the light and
causes him to be fair.
And just in all his dealingswith others.
All right.
Verses 12 through 14.
I write unto you little childrenbecause your sins are forgiven
you for his namesake.
I write unto you fathers becauseyou have known him that is from

(05:23):
the beginning.
I write unto you young menbecause you have overcome the
wicked one.
I write unto you little childrenbecause you have known the
father.
I have written unto you fathersbecause you have known him.
That is from the beginning.
I have written unto you youngmen, because ye are strong, and
the word of God abided in you,and ye have overcome the wicked
one.

(05:44):
All Christians are like littlechildren, for we all can regain
our innocence by the forgivenessof Jesus Christ.
All Christians are like fathers.
Like full grown responsible menwho can think and learn their
way deeper and deeper into theknowledge of Jesus Christ.
All Christians are like youngmen with a vigorous strength to
fight and win their battlesagainst the tempter.

(06:06):
Alright, let's look at verses 15through 17.
Love not the world, neither thethings that are in the world.
If any man loves the world, thelove of the Father is not in
him.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the
lust of the eyes and the prideof life is not of the Father,
but is of the world.
And the world passeth away, andthe lust thereof.
But he that doeth the will ofGod abideth forever.

(06:30):
It is as simple as this.
No man can serve two masters.
You will love one and hate theother.
It is impossible to love God andthe world at the same time.
John says here that all that isin the world is the lust of the
eyes, the lust of the flesh, andthe pride of life.
This is what the world offers.
But we are not to acceptAnything the world has to offer

(06:53):
because the world and everythingit offers will pass away, but he
that does the will of God abidesforever.
Everything God has to offer iseternal.
All right, look at verse number18, little children, it is the
last time.
And as you have heard thatantichrist shall come, even now

(07:15):
there are many antichristswhereby we know that it is the
last time.
It is the last time.
It has been the last time for along time.
This is the age God is callingout a people for his name.
Then he states that theAntichrist would come and that
there are already existed manyAntichrists.
Now who is an Antichrist?

(07:36):
Antichrist is one who denies thedeity of Christ before this time
realm ends, that will be one whowill rise a political ruler, the
Antichrist who will deceivemany.
All right, let's look at verses19 through 21.
They went out from us, but theywere not of us, for if they had
been of us, they would no doubthave continued with us.

(07:59):
But they went out that theymight be made manifest, that
they were not all of us.
But ye have an unction from theHoly One, and ye know all
things.
I have not written unto youbecause ye know not the truth,
but because ye know it, and thatno lie is of the truth.
Now there were false teacherswho at one point or another had

(08:20):
appeared to be Christians butwere not.
Their true color surfaced andthey left the church.
Not everyone who comes to churchis part of the church.
Understand this.
Romans chapter 9 and verse 6reads, For not all who are
descended from Israel belong toIsrael.
The false teachers that left thechurch were called the Gnostics,
who claimed they had a specialadvanced knowledge which was not

(08:43):
given to the believers.
John lets the believers knowthat we are not inferior to
anyone.
He tells them that they are HolySpirit filled.
The Holy Spirit knows all thingsof the Father and because He
dwells in us, we know all thatwe need to know to live a
victorious life.
The Gnostics had earthly wisdom, but the believers have the
wisdom that comes from above.

(09:05):
This wisdom is far superior.
He says you have the truth andthere is no lie.
In it, the Word of God is pure.
Alright, let's look at verses 22through 27.
Who is a liar?
But he that denied that Jesus isthe Christ who is the antichrist
that denied the Father and theSon whosoever denied the son The

(09:26):
same had not the Father, but hethat acknowledged that the Son
had the Father Also let thattherefore abide in you, which
you have heard from thebeginning.
If that wish you have heard fromthe beginning shall remain in
you, he also shall continue inthe Son and in the Father.
And this is the promise that he.
had promised us even eternallife.

(09:46):
These things have I written untoyou concerning them that seduce
you.
But the anointing which ye havereceived of him abided in you,
and ye need not that any manteach you.
But as the same anointingteaches you of all things, and
is truth, and is no lie, andeven as it hath taught you of
all things, and is truth.

(10:08):
And no lie, and even as it hastaught you, you shall abide in
him.
Here again, John stresses to thebelievers the importance of
staying in the faith, staying inthe truth.
He continues his battle againstthe Gnostics, who were trying to
seduce or to lead astray, thepeople of God from the truth.

(10:29):
He reminds them of the anointingthey possess, and he tells them
that they didn't need anyone toteach them.
Now, John was not saying thatthey didn't need preachers and
teachers, as some interpret thisto mean.
If John meant that, then why washe writing to them?
That's not what John meant here.
John is simply saying that everybeliever has the anointing of

(10:50):
the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is our teacher.
He lets us know what is true andwhat is false.
We have to try the spirits bythe spirit to see whether it be
of God.
If you hear something that theHoly Spirit does not agree with,
dismiss it.
If you see others doing thingsthat the Holy Spirit does not
agree with, don't do them.

(11:11):
John says here in a nutshell, not to allow the Gnostics to
lead them from the truth.
Listen, listen only to the HolySpirit who dwells on the inside
of you.
John's Gospel chapter 14 inverse 26 reads, But the
Comforter, which is the HolyGhost, whom the Father will send
in my name, he shall teach youall things, and bring all things

(11:33):
to your remembrance, whatsoeverI have said unto you.
Now, this verse clearly showsthe importance of preachers and
teachers of God's Word.
Jesus was their teacher.
He taught them and the HolySpirit brought back to their
memory, or to their memory.
Remembrance, the things thatJesus taught them.
Alright, look at verses, uh, 28and 29.

(11:54):
And now, little children, abidein him, that when he shall
appear, we may have confidenceand not be ashamed before him at
his coming.
If ye know that he is righteous,ye know that everyone that doeth
righteousness is born of him.
Now, to abide in the Lord Jesusis to live in fellowship with
him.
We must live a righteous life inorder to not be ashamed when we

(12:17):
stand at the judgment seat ofChrist.
It would be a shame to standbefore God and receive no reward
for your service rendered.
We want to be proud when westand before God, and we want
God to be proud of us.
If we abide in Him and do onlythose things that please Him, we
will not be ashamed at thejudgment seat of Christ.
Then he says that everyone whowalks in righteousness is born

(12:38):
from above because God isrighteous.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
