Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Biblical Talks.
Sermon of the Week.
In Luke, chapter 19, verses 13.
And I want to read this in thecontemporary English version
because I want you to get thisVerse 13.
But before leaving, he calledin ten servants and gave each of

(00:26):
them some money.
He told them use this to earnmore money until I come back,
beloved.
What's the point here?
The point is that God expectsus, as believers, to manage what
he gave us until he returns tobe absolutely crowned king of

(00:51):
king, lord of Lords in Jerusalem.
God's people are called tofollow him in obedience, even
though the world rejects theking in his kingdom.
He's telling us to occupy untilhe returns to do business for

(01:12):
the kingdom.
Until he returns, we are not toengage in all the affairs of
this world.
We are to be about the kingdomand the king.
Today's sermon is about thelate Dr Lockridge, and this
sermon is titled Occupy Until ICome.

(01:35):
The late Dr Lockridge you, I'msorry.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Isn't it strange that everybody wants to live but he
spends his time dying?
You will agree, I'm sure, thatwe live in a sadly sick society.
Sick society.

(03:09):
One day an expert at Moses' lawcame to test Jesus' orthodoxy
by asking him this questionteacher, what does a man need to
do to live now and to liveforever in heaven?
And Jesus replied what doesMoses' law say about it?
And the man replied Moses' lawsaid Thou must love the Lord,
thy God, with all thy heart, with all thy soul and with all

(03:33):
thy strength and with all thymind, and then you must love
your neighbor just as you loveyourself.
Jesus said that's right.
Go do it and you shall live.
You know what to say.
Go do it.
We not only must say what'sright, but we must do what's

(03:53):
right.
If you really want to live, youmust share your life in Christ.
First you must come to him whois life, who has come that we
might have life and that wemight have it more abundantly.
Now we are meeting against thebackdrop of mounting world

(04:15):
tension.
This hate-filled world isdesperate for a decent way of
life.
Now, I'm too ignorant to speakwisely and I trust I'm too wise
to speak ignorantly, but a mandoes not have to be listed in
the who's who to know what'swhat.
Today, as he stands with anewspaper in one hand and a

(04:38):
Bible in the other, with hiseyes focused on the television
and his ears tuned to the radio,he can hear of walls and rumors
of walls rumbling around theworld.
If you really want to live, you've got to come to the Lord
Jesus Christ.
Let him give you life that willnever end and then go and share

(05:04):
that life that you have withothers.
If you really want to live, youmust love God and neighbor in
that order.
You know, the trouble with usin our day is we are trying to
love each other, we are tryingto get along with each other
without God.
In the last decade or so wehave spent millions trying to

(05:30):
get men to live peaceably onewith the other.
Now you will know that men quitacting like brothers in Cain
and Abel's day.
We say we have racial problem.
Our problem is racial, but Isubmit to you that our problem

(05:51):
is not a skin problem, it's asin problem.
We must love God and theirneighbor in that order.
I said we're trying to pay mento live peaceably one with the
other, don't you know?
God is the only one who has tolove, who loves without a reason
?
God so loved the world that hegave his only begotten son.

(06:14):
But human beings love for areason.
I hear the Psalmist saying Ilove the Lord because he has
heard my voice and mysupplication.
But God loves us without ourbeing lovable or lovely.

(06:35):
God loves us.
Reason for being here in thisworld is that we might glorify
him, not glorify ourselves orour neighbor might glorify him.
Not glorify ourselves or ourneighbor, but glorify God.
We must love God and neighborin that order.
Our theology has got to beexpressed in our sociology.

(06:57):
One cannot be human alone.
It takes God and another.
Some people think that just onegood quality makes them
Christian and makes themacceptable in the sight of God.
Everybody here has one or twothings going for them.

(07:19):
But it takes more than just oneor two things.
You must love God with yoursoul, your mind, your heart,
your strength.
And then neighbor as yourself.
You know some people who havetalents well if they sing, who

(07:39):
have talents well if they sing.
They think that all they haveto do is come here on Sunday
morning or wherever your churchis and stand and sing and then
go on and live like you want tolive.
You not only must have thetalent, but you must use it for
the glory and the honor of theLord.
And then there are some people, and I believe that every every

(08:05):
Christian ought to be a tither.
That's the minimum, and thengive generously of that that you
have left.
But now, if a person is atither and gives generously, if
he's not careful he'll get tothe point where he thinks that

(08:26):
whatever he says in the churchought to go.
Because he pays his money, hetakes something else besides
money.
And then then we have someprayer specialists.
We have some people who canorder God around.
They can tell him where to goand what to do and when they
want it and how they want itdone.

(08:46):
Just like God doesn't know howto run this world, some talk to
him like they're trying topicket the throne of grace,
trying to get him to change hismind.
Now, I'm not knocking prayer.
We cannot get along without it,and every day of our lives
ought to be punctuated withperiods of prayer.
But I'm saying that you must dosomething else besides pray.

(09:10):
With all of the strength, allof the resources that God gives
us, we ought to use them for hisglory and his honor.
So we must do something elsebesides pray.
Any individual who thinks thatjust one good quality makes him

(09:30):
acceptable in the sight of Godand serviceable in the kingdom.
It reminds me of bees makinghoney.
There is a bee, you know, thatjust makes honey out of one
flower.
When you taste it it's allright, but you can tell that
something is lacking.
There is another bee.

(09:52):
When he gets ready to makehoney, he will go to the clover
field and suck some of thenectar from the clover, and then
he'll go to the rosebud and getsome of its sweetness, and then
he'll go to the meadow and getsome of what the daisy has to
offer.
Then he'll fly over themountain and bring back some of
the liquid fragrance of amorning glory.

(10:14):
He'll come back by the peachorchard and light in a peach
blossom, and then he'll go tohis little laboratory and he'll
mix it all up.
You've got some real honey, then, and if you want your life
serviceable in the kingdom ofour Lord, you've got to start at
Abraham's tent and get you somefaith.
You've got to visit Moses atMidian and get you some

(10:37):
preparation.
You've got to go up on themountain way lodian, and get you
some preparation.
You've got to go up on themountain where Elijah is and get
you some fire.
You've got to go to Job's houseand get you some patience.
You've got to go to Paul'sdungeon and get you some
determination and missionaryzeal.
You've got to plow through theword of God and stop on the
Jericho road long enough for thegood Samaritan to teach you how

(10:59):
to love your neighbor.
Then you've got to go toCalvary and get you some love
and go down in the tomb and getyou some eternal life and go
somewhere in your secret closetand mix it all up in prayer.
You'll be serviceable in thekingdom of our Lord.
That's the reason Paul said letthis mind be in you, which was

(11:22):
also in Christ Jesus.
Our Lord gave a demonstration offaith and works.
It was on the occasion of theFeast of the Tabernacle.
A blind man was sitting by thewayside, begging.
Now other men became blind, butthis man was born like that.
This man had never seen theface of his loved ones.

(11:46):
He'd never seen a sunrise or asunset.
This man had never seen colorblushing a rose.
This man had felt raindrops, but he'd never seen clouds
floating overhead.
This man had heard thunder, buthe'd never seen lightning flash

(12:06):
.
This man is in a pitifulcondition, sitting there, blind,
begging.
But the disciples wereinterested only to a point.
They were only interested inthe call, they were only
interested in the call.
They were not interested in acure, they just wanted to have
something to talk about.

(12:27):
They just wanted to have itsaid when they got in their rap
session that we know what causedthis blindness.
They were only interested intheology and they called
themselves asking a deeptheological question Master, who
did sin this man or his parents?

(12:51):
That he was born blind.
But Jesus turned their theologyinto doxology, for he said
neither but that the works ofGod might be made manifest in
him.
Now Jesus is not saying thatthe man has never sinned or that
the parents had not sinned, because all have sinned and come

(13:11):
short of the glory of God.
But what Jesus is saying?
That no one's sin caused thisblindness.
I can hear Jesus saying I hadhim born like that for just such
time as this.
I had him born like that sothat when men run low on faith,
I had him born like that so thatwhen men think that faith is

(13:33):
all they need, I had him bornlike that that I might glorify
God.
And he set out to give thisdemonstration, and he's gonna do
it in slow motion.
Now Jesus could have justwheeled and the man's eyes would
have come open.
But he takes this time.
He's gonna demonstrate theimportance of faith and works.

(13:57):
He takes his time, he spit onthe ground, he mixes the spit
and the clay and then he takeshis time and smooths it on the
man's eyes and tells him to goand wash in the pool.
This man, first of all, had tohave faith in Jesus.
If he had no faith, this blindman would have resented, he

(14:21):
would have protested, he wouldhave said why this man is
mocking me?
I've been blind all my life andhere he is putting mud and spit
on my eyes.
But there was something inJesus' voice that caused the man
to want to try and he startedout just like he was.

(14:44):
I said faith is a startingpoint.
That's a good starting point.
That's the only starting point.
This man got up and wentstraight to the pool.
Now, he possibly didn't have aCNI dog, he possibly didn't know
anything about radar, but hewent straight to the pool.
Guide me, o thou great Jehovahpilgrim, through this barren

(15:08):
land.
I am weak, but thou art mighty, hold me with thy powerful hand.
You know, if you will go in thefaith that the Lord gives you,
if you will use that little,he'll increase it While you're
in the journey and then, whenyou come to the end of the
journey, you can testify thatthe journey has been joyful.

(15:31):
You know, when you get in yourcar and start out for home
tonight, you may not have enoughlight to shine all the way home
, but as your vehicle moves, thelight moves.
When you turn right, the lightturns right.
When you turn left, the lightturns left.
When you turn left, the lightturns left.
When you go up the hill, thelight's up the hill.
When you get in the valley, thelight's in the valley.

(15:53):
And after a while you've gotlight all the way home.
Use the faith that the Lordgives you and he will increase
it.
Yes, he'll strengthen you asyou obey.
This man went on to the pool andwhen he got there he didn't
just stand and shout about hisfaith.

(16:13):
This man had to work.
This man washed, and when hewashed, when he worked, when he
coupled his faith and his work, his eyes came open, and now he's
got something to shout about.
His eyes came open and now he'sgot something to shout about.
Now he can tell others whatgood things the Lord has done

(16:34):
for us.
I once was blind, but now I see, oh, I used to murmur and
complain and argue with life, but when I found Jesus precious
to my soul, I moved off ofcomplaint avenue and I'm now
living on Thanksgiving Boulevard.
Praise the Lord, this man hassomething to shout about now.
He has faith and works.

(16:56):
If I walk in the pathway ofduty, if I work until the close
of the day, I shall see thegreat king in his beauty.
When I've gone the last mile ofthe way, when I've gone the
last mile of the way, I'll restat the close of the day and I
know there are joys that awaitme when I've gone the last mile

(17:20):
of the way.
I have faith in him, yes, but Iput my faith to work and I'm
going to work Until the day isover.
Jesus said Occupy until I come, occupy, work until I come.
You know many people instead ofoccupying until he comes, they

(17:42):
occupied with his coming.
They're trying to pinpoint thetime of his coming.
But he's always sitting aroundtrying to figure out just when
he's coming.
Now I know he's coming and Ican't say soon.
I don't know when, but he'scoming, for when he comes, the
dead in Christ are gonna risefirst when he comes.

(18:05):
Isaiah, jeremiah, ezekiel, daniel, the other prophets are
going to rise and run thestreets and everybody they see,
they're going to say I told youso.
When he comes, abraham's goingto nudge Sarah and say wake up,
sarah, the Lord's here.
When he comes, david's going toask for his harp and play once
more the Lord is my shepherd.

(18:27):
I shall not want.
We need to work now, while it'sday, for when the night cometh,
no man can work.
We need to work until he comes.
You know, after a while we'regoing to have some more leaders.

(18:49):
You remember, when Jesus gotready to confirm his divine
mission in the minds of men, hecarried Peter, james and John up
on the mountain ofTransfiguration.
He brought Moses and Elijahdown to represent heaven.
And there on that mountain, inthat conference, there was just
one item on the agenda Jesustalked about dying.
He talked about dying until hiscountenance changed.
He talked about dying untilPeter got happy and said let's

(19:14):
build three tabernacles.
He talked about dying and Ibelieve.
I believe that he appointedMoses to lead that crowd who has
died in the Lord, and I believethat he appointed Elijah to
lead that crowd who will bestill alive when he comes.
You know, elijah didn't die, hejust caught a fire at chariot

(19:39):
and went on home.
And I believe, I believe thatwhile we are getting ready, I
believe that we're going to singa double anthem.
I'm glad that those who will bestill alive will not go off and
leave those in the grave.
The dead in Christ are going torise.
First we're going to sing thisdouble anthem.

(20:02):
The largest crowd is going tosing O death, where is thy sting
.
The most largest crowd is goingto sing O death, where is thy
sting.
And Moses' crowd is going tosing O grave, where is thy
victory?
And then we're going to alljoin in the chorus and sing
Thanks be to God, which gives usthe victory through our Lord
Jesus Christ.
And we'll be caught up togetherto meet him in the air.

(20:25):
Somebody said we'll walk inJerusalem just like John, but
the Bible says we'll be caughtup to meet him in the air.
Somebody says we'll get onboard an old ship of Zion.
She has landed many, a thousand.
She has landed my old father, she has landed my old mother.

(20:46):
But the book says we'll becaught up to meet him in the air
.
And then somebody says we areclimbing Jacob's ladder, and
every round goes higher andhigher.
But the Bible says we'll becaught up to meet him in the air
.
There used to be a song don'thear it so much now.

(21:11):
Lord, I want two wings to veilmy face.
I want two wings to fly away.
And then the head of stanzathat says Lord, meet me, meet me
in the middle of the air.
And if these wings should failme, meet me, meet me in the
middle of the air.
And if these wings should failme, meet me with another pair.

(21:33):
Now, that's somebody didn't knowthe Lord.
There's no failure in him.
While the reservoir of hisresources never recedes, the
wisdom of his word never wanes, the vigor of his virtue never
varies, the the vigor of Hisvirtue never varies, the burnish
of His beauty never blemishes, the lust of His love never

(21:55):
lessens, the power of His powernever perishes and the fountain
of His fullness never fails.
There's no failure in Him.
Whatever Lord gives you, itwon't fail you.
I know he has given mesalvation and that's not going
to fail me.
Oh, I'm saved.
I'm talking about right now.

(22:16):
I'm saved now.
I don't have to wait until Icome to die.
No, I'm saved now.
You know I get excited about itwhen I get to think about it,
the Lord has saved me, has givenme life that will never end.
Somebody right there said well, preacher, when you come to die,

(22:40):
no, I'll just come down to theline that separates time and
eternity and I'll just stepacross that line.
While I'm over here, I'm askingthe Lord to be with me, but
when I step across that line,I'll be there where he is.
We'll be caught up to meet himin the air.
And now he's not coming back tothe earth, right then, he's

(23:05):
just coming down low enough toaffect an airlift.
We're gonna be caught up tomeet him in the air, not on the
earth, but in the air.
And then the blessed part aboutit there we shall ever be with
the Lord.
Praise His name.

(23:25):
We shall ever be with the Lord.
Do you ever think about whatit's going to be like to be with
the Lord?
We shall ever be with the Lord.
You know, some people say I justlike to sit quiet and listen.
Oh, when we get where the Lordis, don't expect it to be quiet

(23:46):
there, there's going to beshouting.
Oh, you know, in seminary theytaught me how to stand in one
track and hold my Bible.
They taught me how to gestureto emphasize certain points.
They taught me how to regulateand modulate my voice so it

(24:06):
won't be so loud and obnoxious.
And you know, I pass the course.
But when I get to thinkingabout being with the Lord, I get
excited about it.
I can't help but shout Look, you haven't seen any shouting

(24:28):
yet.
You just wait until my feetstrike Zion.
You just wait until I beholdhis face.
Oh, you just wait until I hearhim say Servant, well done.
You just wait till we shallever be with the Lord.
Will you be there, don't theLord?

(24:49):
Will you be there?
Don't fool me Will you be there?
I'll be there when the saints gomarching in.
Will you be there?
I'll be there when the four andtwenty elders bow around the
altar.
Will you be there?

Speaker 4 (25:22):
I'll be there when they crown him Lord of all.
It is the theme of scripture, the theme of eternity and the
theme of the redemptive story.
To worship the true and livingand glorious God is the purpose
of all creation, so why do wetreat it as only what is sung or
played in church?
On Sunday morning, pastor JohnMcAuliffe will teach you through
scripture text about trueworship.

(25:42):
You will learn that worship isany essential expression of
service rendered unto God by asoul that loves and extols Him
for who he is.
Worship is the nonstop role ofbelievers, not merely part of a
church service.
So get ready to alter yourpriorities, aiming higher than
entertaining worshipers onSunday mornings.
Worship shows that yourultimate priority must always be

(26:04):
to worship the true and lovingGod with a radically different
type of living.
