mindset and more.

let's get started.
Hello, hello, hello.

(01:52):
Welcome to the Black GirlsConsult To Podcast.
I'm your host, dr AngelinaDavis, and this episode is going
to be a really laid back one.
I feel like I haven't recordedone of these in a really long
time.
I just felt like we're headedinto summer, we're all kind of
out of our typical routine and Iwanted to talk about something

(02:14):
different.
You know, and just share whatI'm going through right now in
my business, and I know many ofyou are probably in a similar
spot or maybe you've been there, done that, maybe you have not
gotten to this point yet, but Iam trying to improve my
visibility, and one of thereasons why I am doing this is

(02:35):
because, you know, whenever wethink about being online, we
think about social mediaplatforms, but we're not
necessarily focused on buildingat least, at all times, focus on
building the type of visibilityand content that's going to
last for decades And the reasonwhy I have been so focused on

(02:57):
this is because we have to getoff of this hamster wheel of
content creation, of trying todo a lot of lead generation via
different sites such as LinkedIn.
We just need to stop doing somany of those things so often
because it's eating up our timeAnd although I feel like I do

(03:18):
fairly well in that regard, iknow a number of my clients
struggle with this And when youactually look at some of the
other options that are out there, they seemingly take so much
time to just develop.
Whether that is a solid SEOstrategy, whether that is
building out a YouTube channel.
There are so many other thingsthat we may want to do or

(03:41):
speaking engagements.
They just take time to set upand establish, but when they are
established and working wellfor us, then they can pay off
for years and years to come.
So we have to do some of thisgroundwork to get our visibility
journey started, and I knowbecause one of the biggest

(04:02):
challenges many clients that Ihave worked with have is just
getting on camera.
They don't like to putthemselves out there And I know
it feels awkward, it feels weird.
I was definitely in that sameboat because when I first
started, i was worried aboutlooking unprofessional.
We all have high standards forhow we feel like we need to show

(04:24):
up online And we like to doeverything with excellence.
We don't wanna look like we'rein amateur And I'll tell you
when you're first starting out, especially if you're doing any
aspect of video content or evenif you're doing something like
podcasting or if you arespeaking on a large stage.
Whenever we start anything new,we're not gonna be at the top

(04:45):
of our game.
That's just part of the journeyAnd I think we have to do a
better job of embracing that.
I'm speaking for myself as well.
At times it may not becomfortable to embrace it,
because we have other clientslooking at us and we're used to
putting out such high work forthem that we don't want to see

(05:05):
like we don't know what we'redoing in anything.
It makes us feel like we don'tlook like an expert.
We don't seem like we are beingas professional as we should be
, and that's a big thing formany of us in the consulting
world.
We're so consumed with lookingprofessional and polished, but

(05:26):
the thing is, whenever we focuson those things, we don't try
anything new.
We don't use our creativity.
We blend in our businessdoesn't grow, we don't get
opportunities, and then we sitback and we look at other people
.
We're like, how in the worldare they doing it?
And I'm not, but it's becausethey were able to show up, as

(05:46):
they were at a very early stage, and just navigate the journey,
and over time they got betterand better and better and better
, and then people followed along.
They embraced the journey, theygot to know them because they
saw them going through the wholeprocess of building, and that
leads to friendships, collaborations, jobs I mean just

(06:11):
partnerships.
It just leads to so much thatit's going to grow your business
and grow you professionally.
So I hope I'm starting toconvince you that you need to be
more visible, as do I, and Iheard a statistic is a statistic
that I thought was quiteshocking, and it's that 91% of

(06:34):
businesses, 91% of businessesI'm reading that one more time
91% of businesses use video astheir marketing tool, and so,
although I have been working onimproving video presence and all
those things for a little whilenow, i wanted to step up my
game, because there's so muchthat I want to do as we move

(06:56):
forward to just increase overallvisibility of my expert brand,
and one of the things I've donevery recently is to join a
membership that's dedicated tobuilding visibility and brand
presence on video, and this hasbeen awesome.

(07:17):
I'm so excited to have joinedthat It's actually the Brave on
video membership community Andthis is so awesome because it's
an opportunity for someone likeme who doesn't feel like I'm a
creative per se but have a lotof enjoyment or take a lot of
enjoyment in doing those thingsthat are more creative, to kind

(07:39):
of dive into this creativeentrepreneurial world and learn
how to get better on camera.
And I wanted to do this becauseI do eventually want to start a
YouTube channel for thispodcast.
If you haven't noticed, or ifyou have been on a rock
somewhere, so many podcasts aremoving to a video format.

(07:59):
But the thing is I don't wantto do this the same old way.
I don't want to sit in front ofa microphone and just talk to
you as a talking head nonstop.
I want to somehow create in mymind I'm envisioning creating
some type of podcast show And Ireally want to get help in doing
that.
And I know for me it's going tobe a longer journey because

(08:21):
there's so much I need to learnto get there.
But you all stay tuned and keepyour eyes out, because I'm
saying this now in the podcastto hold myself accountable to
moving forward with it, justlike you should Tell a friend
what you're gonna do when you'resetting your goals and your
plans, because that helps you toactually move forward with it
And not pretend like you neverthought about the idea or you
never considered it.

(08:42):
So I want to get more visible inthat way, because I feel like
we're able to connect betterthrough video and you're able to
learn more when you're in tuneand focus on whatever the
message may be.
And then, if you don't want towatch the video, you can always
listen to it by audio.
And even if you're thinking,hey, i'm a writer, i don't

(09:03):
really care too much about beingin front of the camera, well,
listen, in order for you tomarket and pub and sell your
book, you're gonna have to bevisible too.
So we just can't really getaround this whole aspect of
business development in buildingAnd instead of dreading this,
we're going to embrace it fullyAnd I want you to lean into it,

(09:25):
because I think the knee-jerkreaction is to think about how
you can outsource, to delegatethat aspect of the work.
But remember, even if you don'twant to be the face of your
brand, you still want toestablish a connection and a
presence with others that isgoing to be authentic and
genuine.
The market is just toosophisticated and too advanced

(09:46):
at this point that even when itcomes to having your own, for
instance, proprietary framework,it's just not going to cut it
any longer.
People are aware they are justmore intelligent and learned and
study about making their buyingdecisions, and your competition
is too.
So everybody is trying to dothe same thing and be the same

(10:08):
places, and one of the ways thatyou can show up differently is
to show who you are, becausethat's one thing that nobody, no
matter how hard they try, nomatter what they do, they can't
replicate it.
So this is how you're gonna usethis aspect of visibility as
your secret weapon, and we'regonna talk about in this episode

(10:29):
just some things to considerwhen you're beginning to map out
a visibility strategy And I'mnot gonna focus solely on just
video, but just thinking aboutin general how can you be seen
more regularly, how can peopleget to know you, get to know
your brand, get to know yourname and have the desire to work

(10:50):
with you.
If you wanna get very technicalabout it, this is an aspect of
demand generation.
We rarely talk about that, butthe aspect of building demand
comes before we even get to thepoint of trying to find leads.
So, yes, this too is a revenuegenerating activity.
A thriving consulting businessis built on a solid business
foundation and a consulting codethat leads you toward your

(11:14):
ideal business and your ideallifestyle.
And the great thing about thiscode is that it works for any
type of consulting practice, whether you help clients with
professional development,business management, grant
writing, it or somethingentirely different.
This consulting code is notrocket science and is not beyond
your reach, and when you crackthe code, it can jumpstart the

(11:36):
growth of your solo consultingpractice and is what you need to
know to get started and lendyour first clients, and nothing
more.
This is a step-by-step processI wish I had so many years ago,
and that's why I wanted to sharethis with you and how you can
do this too.
So if you're interested instarting your consulting

(11:56):
business and creating adesirable offer to generate
leads for your offer and to makesales, then the consulting code
is your solution.
Visit wwwexceletconsultingcomfor more information.
So one of the first things thatwe have to do before we even
embark on this journey is tohave a strategy.

(12:19):
The reason being is because youcan quickly find yourself doing
a lot of things that don't leadto the outcomes that you truly
desire or that you want.
For instance, you may try togain more visibility and go on
various podcasts, or maybeyou're doing videos with other
individuals within your industry, trying to do more

(12:41):
collaborations, but if you arecollaborating and sharing with
audiences that don't align withyour offer and your services,
then that really is I hate tosay it just a waste of time.
You wanna make sure that all ofthe opportunities that you're
taking and the things that youare building, that they do align

(13:04):
with your offer in the futurethat you want to lead your
business too.
So if we keep that at the topof our minds, this is one of the
reasons why always focusing onand returning to our vision is
so important, because we can seewhen we're about to get off
track.
And I think this is one of thehardest things, because as you

(13:26):
become better and better at whatyou do and people get to know
your business and your services, they're gonna ask you to
participate.
You may be asked to join in onsummits, you may be asked to do
various podcasts, episodes, andall of those things can be very
enjoyable if you just have theextra time you want to do them.
But if you're focused onvisibility for the growth of

(13:50):
your business, then we do haveto be very strategic in what we
accept and how we're utilizingour time.
I was watching an interview withMichael B Jordan very recently
and I know this is jumping intothe Hollywood world, but stay
with me for a moment But he wastalking about how he became very
, very selective about the partsthat he would take And, if you

(14:12):
haven't noticed, he has becomepretty much the face of
Hollywood, at least for a strongblack male character.
There are some others John theMajors and they are both friends
, but they have come to thelimelight very recently and kind
of taking on this new era ofacting in Hollywood.

(14:35):
And what I thought about when Iwas listening to this interview
was you know, this is very truefor all of us.
We have to be very mindful ofthe opportunities that we're
saying yes to.
Every yes is not a good yes foryour business, for your growth,
and there are someopportunities that you typically
will look at and say you knowwhat that's not going to benefit

(14:57):
me, or maybe you think theaudience is too small or the
opportunity is not as big as youwould like it.
Those particular opportunitiescan be some of the biggest that
you could ever take.
It is all about alignment, andwhen we're focused on aligning
our decisions with the path andthe journey that we want to
navigate, things become more andmore beneficial to us.

(15:22):
In the end, it begins tosnowball, it begins to grow, and
I want us to think about ourvisibility journey like this.
This is how I'm currentlythinking about my visibility
journey and focusing on thosethings that are truly going to
help in the long run.
So not just saying yes andadding more things to my plate
for protecting my time, settingboundaries, and focusing on what

(15:44):
are the key opportunities thatI need to say yes to.
That will help me grow, andit's not being selfish.
You're not being selfishbecause you're still willing to
give your best and to give moreof you when you're involved in
those activities And if you havetime doing things that you
truly just want to do out of thekindness of your heart.

(16:06):
But you're running a businessand it's okay.
I want you to feel guilty aboutprotecting your time.
In order for you to grow, youhave to have boundaries set and
you have to be able to not onlybe visible but then also save
your energy and your mentalcapacity to do the work, to land

(16:26):
more clients, to serve moreclients at higher capacity and
just grow above and beyondothers.
So that's going to requireboundaries.
So don't feel guilty about thatpiece.
But when you make sure thatthose things are in alignment,
the yeses that you say are goingto move you closer and closer
to your end goal.
So one of the things justunderstanding that we need to

(16:48):
create boundaries and focus onthat alignment with our journey.
Now, the next thing is that Ilearned this a long time ago,
but I feel like this issomething that's rarely
discussed.
Whenever you're creating content, you are creating content with
a purpose, and part of youhaving this strategy and being

(17:11):
purposeful with that strategy isthe fact that you know that
each piece of content that youmay create whether it's a blog
post, a podcast episode, aYouTube video, a LinkedIn post,
whatever it may be it serves aspecific purpose, and that
purpose is either going to be tointroduce your expert brand to

(17:35):
new people, to nurture thecurrent audience, that you have
to gain more visibility toconvert into help with sales.
But each piece of content has apurpose And you have to
diversify the type of contentthat you're putting out.
If you're constantly puttingout nurture content, which many

(17:56):
of us, as experts in ourindustry, can fall in the habit
of doing I have definitely beenguilty You have to step back and
say wait, i am nurturing thesame group over and over again,
but I'm not doing anything thatis going to draw more people
into my ecosystem.
So there has to be this aspectof visibility there that may not
necessarily look like the typeof content that we want to put

(18:19):
out and focus on, becausetypically when we're thinking
about visibility, this is goingto be very general, right, it's
often about your lifeexperiences, your life story,
maybe just common themes thatother people can resonate with.
But those are necessary becausethat's what's going to help
people take a look and stop intheir tracks and realize, hey,

(18:43):
she has something in common withme And because of that they're
going to be attracted and drawnto you for that reason.
But when we're not focused ondoing that more often and I'm
not talking about catering toalgorithms, i'm just saying when
we're not putting out moregeneral content or general
information and knowledge thatspeaks to a larger group, it's

(19:05):
going to be hard for us to grow.
So we want to be able to speakon stages and share our story,
to go into more depth aboutthose things that we find
troubling and problematic in ourindustry, to speak out when we
have a different perspective, tobe able to share some insight.
That may be very foundational, but it's always something that

(19:27):
we have to revisit over time, because, in order for us to grow
, we have to remember andpractice those foundational
principles.
Those are the things thatincrease your visibility and
draw in new people.
So, as we're going through thisprocess of creation and
ideation, we have to remainfocused in about what each piece

(19:49):
of content is doing, how we'reusing various platforms and what
their purpose actually is.
Everything that you do, everypiece of content, every
engagement, every collaboration, everything just doesn't have
the same purpose, andremembering that, being mindful
of that and having that aspectof diversity and heterogeneity

(20:10):
built into your strategy isgoing to pay off tremendously.
And I want to end with thisreminder, in order for you to be
a thought leader in your space, you have to be visible.
People need to know who you are.

(20:31):
You cannot afford to be thewell-kept secret.
In order for you to be seen asan expert in your space and to
build your thought leadership inyour expert brand, people need
to know who you are.
So that's why this wholeconversation about increasing

(20:52):
visibility is so important.
For far too long, we've beenhiding in the shadows.
We've been sitting back anddoing all of the real work
behind the scenes and not beengiven the credit for the work
that we have done, thebrilliance that you have shared,
the impact that you have madeAnd listen.
It's time for you to be on thatstage.
It's time for you to be heard.

(21:14):
It's time for your voice to bethe one recorded.
It's time for you to be quotedin major journals and articles
and other publications.
It's time for you to shine.
I know you've been doing thatwork.
I know you've been doing all ofit behind the scenes, but we
need to see your face and weneed to know your name.
That's one of the reasons whywe're having this whole

(21:36):
conversation this month.
I, too, am trying to increase myvisibility.
I'm trying to embrace thisjourney as well.
So I get it.
I understand how difficult itcan be to put yourself out there
, to be vulnerable, to beworried about someone judging
you.
I mean, think about it.
You already have so many peoplejudging you on a daily basis.

(21:58):
That's already frustratingenough to deal with day after
day, but that's something thattypically only you see or
recognize.
But now you're putting yourselfout there for other people to
be able to recognize it, forother people to possibly leave a
mean comment Although I willtell you that that hasn't
happened to me, at least not yet.
You don't have to have anegative journey.

(22:20):
It doesn't have to be a badexperience, and I want to
encourage you to lean into that, because actually it may mean
that you're saying somethingthat's even more powerful,
because it's a matter ofdisrupting the status quo,
disrupting the norm, not for thesake of disruption, but to

(22:41):
allow change to be made.
We can't continue to sit in ourcomfort zone.
So I want you to think abouthow you're going to embrace this
aspect of increasing yourvisibility, and what we're going
to do this month is walkthrough different ways in which
you can do that, and it won'tjust be me.
I'm bringing some friends alongtoo.

(23:02):
So I want you to stay tuned andkeep listening, because we're
going to figure this visibilitything out And I'm going to tell
you how I'm doing, how thejourney is going, and so far
it's been going well.
So you know, right now I'mstarting to increase and improve
my ability to create video.

(23:23):
That's going to be what I leaninto.
But what are you going to leaninto?
What are you going to choose todo moving forward this month
that's going to increase yourvisibility?
Are you going to lean intosocial media LinkedIn, instagram
, facebook?
Are you going to lean intospeaking engagements and get
your name out there, get on morestages, get on more webcasts,

(23:48):
or are you going to do yourshare of podcast interviews and
make your rounds and allow yourvoice to be heard?
Whatever it is that you chooseto do and your approach that
you're going to take to gainmore visibility, even as this
media PR, whatever it may be, iwant you to claim that today And
then we're going to see overthis next month what progress we

(24:10):
can make together.
All right, guys, i hope thisepisode has been helpful.
I want you to reach out to meon LinkedIn or on Instagram and
let me know.
