Wisdom teeth, emerging in the late teens or early twenties, can sometimes cause noticeable discomfort. If you're experiencing pain at the back of your mouth—especially when opening wide—it could signal an impacted wisdom tooth. These third molars often grow at awkward angles and press against the surrounding gums or adjacent molars, leading to inflammation and sensitivity. When this happens the wisdom teeth need to be removed.
Inflamed or Swollen Gums
One of the earliest signs that wisdom teeth may require extraction is persistent gum inflammation. Swollen, tender gums behind your back molars can indicate that wisdom teeth are pushing through at odd angles. In some cases, the resulting gum flap can trap food, creating an ideal environment for bacteria. If left unchecked, this can lead to a painful infection known as pericoronitis, and eventually abscess formation if untreated.
Infection and Pain
Partial eruption of wisdom teeth often allows food and bacteria to accumulate under the gum flap, increasing the risk of infection. Symptoms include foul taste or odor, discomfort while chewing, and potential abscesses forming under the gum tissue. These infections require timely attention to prevent more serious complications.
Sinus Pressure and Headaches
Pain in the upper jaw or behind the cheekbones isn’t always sinusitis—it could be your upper wisdom teeth. As these molars develop, their roots can push toward the sinus cavities, causing pressure, headaches, and a feeling of congestion. If you’ve ruled out allergies or a cold, your wisdom teeth could be the real cause.
When to Consult a Specialist
Persistent pain, gum swelling, signs of infection, or unexplained sinus pressure are strong indicators you should visit an oral surgeon. Early assessment can prevent progression to more serious symptoms, such as persistent abscesses or damage to neighbouring teeth.
