Speaker 1 (00:05):
M a wall street line, shackle change, Oh someome girdy,

(00:25):
it's calling my name. There is no mercy and it's
been a tentery juice as the huge stream game Rango three.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Come here be by me a die inside these walls,
inside the wild.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
And went no girls as.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
I'm hey everyone, and welcome back to Bloody Angola, a

(01:34):
podcast one d and forty two years in the making,
the complete story of America's bloodiest prison. I'm Jim Chapman,
and today I am going to tell you the story
of someone who is just infamous, not only inside of Angola,
but also outside of Angola. A little more positive of

(01:55):
a story today, and that is the life of Eugene
Bishop Tannyhill. Now Eugene Tannehill was born in Colfax, Louisiana.
This was in nineteen thirty four. In Colfax is a
small town. It's near Alexandria, Louisiana, kind of in the

(02:16):
center of the state. And back in nineteen thirty four
when Bishop Tannehill was born, this was a very small.

Speaker 5 (02:25):
Town and it still is today.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
So at age twenty five, Tannyhill confessed to the bludgeoning
of a man to death with a pipe. This was
in the northern Louisiana parish of Grant Parish, and it
was during a robbery that he attempted to commit on
this individual at some railroad tracks. He goes to trial,

(02:50):
he's convicted, and subsequently he is sentenced to life in
prison inside a bloody in Gola. Plus he got twenty
five years four armed robbery. Now and when he goes
to Angola. This is in the early sixties, y'all. Really,
this is the peak of the bloody years inside of Angola.

(03:11):
And not much is out there on Bishop Tannehill's early
life inside of Angola, but you can imagine how it
was during that time. I mean, you're fighting for survival
right now. What is known is that at some point
early on in his incarceration, Tannyhill becomes a trustee guard
and it was during this time actually, as he was

(03:33):
perched inside of a guard tower alone with a rifle
that he said he felt the hand of God rush
over him and with it his whole life inside the
wire would change. And incidentally, this was only four years
into his sentence. So he would start opening up to

(03:56):
other inmates about his early life, about the shame he
thought for what he did that lamed him. Inside of
Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, he would describe to these
inmates about how very early in his childhood he would
start stealing and later he would move to robbing people, which,

(04:18):
in his words, he would eventually become a hell raiser.
And it was through God that Tanning Hill began to
tell his story of murder to other inmates. He would
describe this crime that sent him to Angola as being
possessed by the devil. As a matter of fact, listen

(04:38):
to this clip of Tanny Hill himself discussing just that.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
And I knewed a Pentecosta preacher. I know the Pencosta preacher.
I know that he had a lot of money with
him all the time. I shall huh the visitation of
Satan with victim. Kay, that's the one you're to leave
on the side road and get it because he has

(05:05):
a lot of money with him.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
You know, Satan talks.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
You know who I believed that Satan talks. He said,
y'all live on the side and get him. And I
sat on on the railroad track one morning between right
at midday, and I waited for him to come by.
And when he come by, I took my eye and

(05:34):
I slaved him. Kill him on the.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Spot by annerst man. I killed him on the spot,
striped his body naked, looking for the money.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Stok his body naked, looking for the money.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Drunk his body over in the weeds. He was in mayhut,
and let the flies blowed his body.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
If that ain't D money, but says what if D
money was it? Let the flies blow his body to
got dollars sixty three cents. That's all he had, dollar
sixty three cents. And when it got me half a
gull and of wine and raised up some hell.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Now, it didn't take long for word to get around Angola.
Tanny Hill started to preach and do what he could
to help save souls inside of the prison. At this
point he started mentoring others incarcerated, and that's when he
really became.

Speaker 5 (06:41):
Known as the Bishop.

Speaker 4 (06:44):
And then in nineteen ninety five, Warden Burl Caine would
arrive an Angola and Burrol Kane would completely transform the prison.
I've done an episode, actually I've done three episodes on
Burrol Caine. Can go back and listen to those. But
he would completely transform this prison by using religion as

(07:07):
the key component in rehabilitation, and Warden Kane he really
liked the bishop and he had a tremendous amount of
respect for him. Tanny Hill would work with Warden Kane
as four churches were built on the grounds of the prison.
The bishop, in fact, became so popular that when the

(07:28):
Academy Award winning documentary The Farm was filmed at Angola,
Bishop Tannehill was a focal point of that story. And
in addition to that, when Billy Graham preached at Angola,
you're talking the preacher of preachers, right, Bishop Tannehill would

(07:48):
share that pullpit with Billy Graham. Now, Tannehill was also
one of the first graduates of the Louisiana State Penitentiaries
Bible College at Angola, and that Bible College would actually
go on to train dozens of inmates to become preachers.

(08:09):
And when asked many years later what his thoughts were
regarding his incarceration at Angola, he would say the opposite
of what you may think. He would say, rather than
drown in his sorrows or curse the walls of Angola,
he would say that Angola actually gave him life, because

(08:32):
he said life on the outside of prison would have
absolutely destroyed his soul. He was completely lost. So this
relationship with Burrell Caane would be a key aspect in
his quest to gain freedom, and despite his life sentence,
in two thousand and seven, the bishop would win his

(08:56):
first round in his effort to secure parole. The Pardon
Board actually recommended his release once before, in nineteen ninety seven,
the Pardon Board actually recommended a reduction in his sentence. However,
at that time the Grant Pairs sheriff opposed it, and
the governor at that time, Mike Foster, rejected a reduction

(09:21):
in his sentence, So this was a big step for him.
Now this time around, a new governor was in office,
Kathleen Blanco, and she had a history of going with
what the Pardon Board would recommend. So after several other
legal hurdles, on August fourteenth, two thousand and seven, after

(09:43):
forty five years inside of Angola, Eugene Bishop Tanneyhill walked
out of prison after Governor Blanco signed his pardon papers.
At this time, he was seventy years old, and it's
important to me mention Burl Caine spoke very highly of

(10:04):
Tanny Hill during his pardon board hearing, and the great
thing about it was he already had a job. He
was met by the pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle right
outside of the gates of Angola.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
To start his life as a freeman.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
He would travel mentor and convicts all over the country,
which he would do until his death on October twenty
third of twenty twenty. So I have his obituary and
I'm going to read it to you quickly. It reads
Bishop Eugene Tannehill, son of late Eugene Tenney Hills, Senior

(10:45):
in Pearl. Tanney Hill was born in nineteen thirty four
in Colfax, Louisiana. He attended school in the Colfax education system.
Some years later, Eugene became an ordained bishop and pastor
of the Inglela Prison non denominational church located in Angola, Louisiana,

(11:06):
where he was known for leading the inmates in prayer
for repentance and redemption. God used him to open seven
churches on the prison grounds of one of the bloodiest
prisons in the country. Inmates turned their hearts to God
through the preaching and teachings of the bishop. He preached
nonviolence and to repent and live a peaceful life quote.

(11:29):
He had a great impact on Angola's Prison, said Warden
Burrough Kane. He served as the intercessor for the NOTBS,
which stands for the New Orleans Theological Baptist Seminary, and
he mentored several of the graduates. He taught Sunday School
in Angola as well as several other classes. He received

(11:51):
many awards and certificates that he proudly held dearly in
his possession for over fifty years. He was featured in
a documentary The Farm, produced by his longtime friend Jonathan Stack,
who created a website on Bishop's life which can be
found at Bishop Eugene Tannehill dot com, summarizing his life

(12:12):
and accomplishments. While ministering in Angola Prison, Bishop met lifelong
friend Terry van Dere, who was resourceful to Bishop throughout
his tenure and endeavors. Terry supported Bishop and made provisions
for him through the help of the Lord, to pursue
whatever goals and dreams he had in serving administering to others.

(12:34):
In two thousand and seven, Bishop came to New York
and joined the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church, where the pastor Jim
Simbala received him into the congregation with open arms and love.
Pastor Simbala became good friends to Bishop Tannehill and he
began to work with at risk youth at the church.

(12:54):
Bishop joined the prison ministry at the church and worked
with Joshua Smalls as the leader and ministered to surrounding prisons,
including Rikers Island. After Bishop became known for his website
and following, he evangelized throughout the country upon request for
speaking engagement in two thousand and seven. Bishop also met

(13:15):
the love of his life, Charlene Latini, on January ninth,
two thousand and nine.

Speaker 5 (13:21):
They were married and remained.

Speaker 4 (13:22):
As a union until his demise on Friday, October twenty third,
twenty twenty. Bishop was in perfect health until he suffered
a fall in February of twenty eighteen. From that point
his health declined and he spent a short time in
Shoreview's nursing home. Prior to that, he jogged five miles
a day and rode his ten speed bike daily. His

(13:45):
favorite quote was a body in jail is better off
than a soul in prison. After a short stay in
the nursing home, his wife and family thought it best
that He spent the remainder of his life in his home,
where he was made comfortable under hospice home care until
his demise. Bishop Eugene Tanney Hill leaves his wife Charlene,

(14:08):
his son Michael Tenney Hill, his stepdaughter Dawn, his step
son Kevin, two granddaughters, one great granddaughter, numerous nieces and nephews,
church members, former fellow inmates, and friends throughout Brooklyn, New York,
in the entire country. So that was his obituary and

(14:32):
you can obviously see very respected towards the end of
his life. Now, y'all, it's rare that you'll ever hear
me say that I agree with a release as it
relates to someone murdering another human being. I'm just one
who believes your fate is your fate. If you're sentenced
to life in prison, you should serve life in prison.

(14:54):
But this release, which to me is much like the
Wilbert Rideau release, I get it, it's rare, but I
think this guy just earned his freedom considering what he
was doing with his life. I agree with this one.
So I got a little treat for you today, and
you won't hear my usual sign off because to end

(15:17):
this one.

Speaker 5 (15:19):
I'm gonna let you hear Bishop.

Speaker 4 (15:22):
Tannehill's testimony of his life from the man himself. It's
about fifteen minutes in length, and I know you're gonna
enjoy it.

Speaker 2 (15:34):
So here's that holy gree din.

Speaker 3 (15:40):
In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. You know I'm
not gonna friend you hire, because.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
Any one have that sef same spirit of the Lord
shaving Jesus Christ. We ought to be done, took pace
in ratorrah and know that Jesus is Lord, and we
have that self same spirit, that self same spirit that

(16:13):
bless us all. So we don't thank God that we
able to sum all ourselves at this evening and his
brethen in the sight that the visitation of the Holy
Spirit will be made manifested in our lives and Christ

(16:34):
will be glorified in this church. You know, this is
the Church of the Lord Saving Jesus Christ, the church
that he prajeted with his blood, the church that he sanctified,
qualified and justified.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
Unto his glory. Now this is good.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
I'm a man.

Speaker 3 (17:01):
I feel it coming on, and it's gonna come on
because I.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Am a nine and a pint. It I am a
nine and a pint it from the throne of Grace,
not from downhill, but from the throne of Grace. I
met Jesus, Good God, Almighty. I met Jesus one morning
at the death house. I met Jesus at the death house.

(17:34):
Jem praise the name of the Lord. And he sent
me from the death house to the church house that
I could represent him and be a witness unto his
glory through the power of the Holy Gold. Praise him

(17:56):
wonderful name. Jesus is Lord in a dying hour wall
under great supplication, Yes, surround it and demanded influence. And

(18:21):
the Lord was with me, and he brought me to
and help is the knight standing in the liberty of
the Lord, Savior Jesus Christ. Why would he have made
me free? I'm not entangled with the yoga bundance. No,

(18:43):
I'm not entangled with the yoga bondings. Whatever the spirit
of Christ drew, there is liberty. If I got a
witness that tonight, praise the name of the Lord, and
I thank God right now, Ain't God right now? That's
a little part of my testimony. And then I'll come

(19:04):
into the simon. I'm from the South, the Deep South,
the state of Losera, known that the Pelican steal. Knowing
that the Pelican steal. Right around the city of New Orleans,

(19:26):
I said, around the city of New Orleans, the Montagras city,
the exciting city, praise the name of God.

Speaker 3 (19:40):
And I thank God right now of his goodness, and
might say.

Speaker 2 (19:47):
And I'm a young man.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
I was raised up.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
In the ghettold my people was oh, and I'm like hmm.
And I must have followed the same example. And I
found myself as a young man tied growing up. I

(20:20):
fell into the practice of dis obedient, fell into the
practice of dis obediing.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
I fell into the practice of.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
Drinking alcohol, getting drunk of a Ludshire. No church filation,
no church filiation, no embracement of love, no understanding of life.

(20:53):
And nobody loved it to me, and nobody seemed to care.

Speaker 3 (20:59):
Lord. And I found myself.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
Start stealing as a young child, start stealing, bugalizing, limited,
disrespectable life, robin.

Speaker 3 (21:32):
Raising hell.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Hm used by the enimate and sent panic and demonic
powerless avested my life. It brought me under sedection as
an instrument to sin and debt. Don't you know, nobody

(21:57):
tell you that demonic powers is not real man. Satan
is real, but Jesus Christ is us a little more real.
We're going on.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
We're going on, praise God. And as I.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
Kept on walking on the broad road of destruction and
on the avenue of sins, I become demon possessed. I
knew somebody didn't even know what I'm talking about. I
become demon possessed that took full control of my life

(22:41):
and brought me under suggestion of the powers of darkness. Hmm.

Speaker 3 (22:54):
And when I know the thing.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
I was playing rock and roll, mean little Richid tied up.
I know somebody didn't order know about Little Richard hu
ya lact like y'aller know nothing about to.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
Make yes up up, Mean little Richid tied up, yes up?
When I know any thing?

Speaker 2 (23:19):
I was tied up with fex Domino begun twined out
of New Orleans. When I know anything, I wrapped up
and tangled all up in all of it, and I.

Speaker 3 (23:37):
Couldn't see no way out of drugs.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
And out of go. One Sunday morning, I wanted a
fixed job. A fixed job, A fixed job.

Speaker 3 (23:54):
Yo, act like.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
Y'all don't know what I'm talking about. I know you
got to mix drugs r R. I wanted to fix job.
I needed a fix job and I didn't have no
money to get it. And I knewed a Pennecostan preacher.

(24:16):
I know the Pennecostan preacher.

Speaker 5 (24:18):
I know that he.

Speaker 2 (24:19):
Cad a lot of money with him all the time.
I said, uh huh, the visitation of Satan. Whisper to me,
say that's the one you're to leave on the side
road and get him, because he cares a lot of
money with him. You know Satan talks. You know who

(24:40):
had believed that Satan talked. He said, y'all live on
the side and get him. And I sat on the
on the railroad track one morning between right at midday,
and I waited for him to come by. And when
he come by, I took my iron and I slaved him,

(25:07):
killed him on the spot.

Speaker 3 (25:11):
I amost man. I killed him on the spot.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
Shifted his body naked looking for the money, stock his
body naked looking for the money, drunk his body over
in the weeds. He was in may Hut, and let
the flies blowed his body. If that ain't the money,

(25:39):
but says what is the money?

Speaker 1 (25:40):
Was that.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
Let the flies blow his body? Took that dollar sixty
three cents. That's all he had, a dollar sixty three cents.
And when he got me half a gallon of wine
and raised.

Speaker 5 (25:54):
Up some hell.

Speaker 3 (26:00):
To show you what to deble it. And I was
brought under.

Speaker 2 (26:05):
Consident, and the good Lord revealed to my great an
he that it was me, and give her a divine
revelation that it was me, that it couldn't be denied.
They picked me up and brought me under custody, and

(26:31):
I had to submit. That's aggravated on Robbie, first degree
cold blood made of and the Sir of lotheronerd that
carriage what capital for punishment? Three billion dollars cash couldn't

(26:56):
have couldn't have brought me out of it, that can't
capped the punishment to punish me to die under the
influence of elect twisty two hundred and twenty seven moved
to elect twist day. That's what I engaged myself too, to
die because you're gonna kill me. And I was wisely,

(27:23):
I was wise of it. I jewed that at least
I thought I je did. I thought I was nothing,
never would be nothing, and could be nothing. And nobody
loving me, and nobody seemed to die.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
I thought that when they put me on death road.

Speaker 2 (27:51):
After sentence me to capital punishment, to die in my
death shall, I heard a voice, and that voice spoke
to me, especially saying, tiny Hill. That's my name, Tiny Hill,

(28:18):
that's my name. Who is greater than I? I thought
I was admit the saying. I thought it was a
goldes or hat or something around. Now, who is the
talk to me? He spoke again, tiny Hell, who is
greater than I? If you take past the amilte of

(28:41):
the scriptures, the striptre said, greater is he that is
in you than he that is in the war. So
that must have been the Holy One speaking to me Jesus.
That must have been Jesus, who is greater and I.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
And either the vices. He said, if you repent, if
you repent.

Speaker 2 (29:11):
And become godless, sorrow, godless sorrah leads you to repent us. Yeah. Amen,
you will not die under the influence of lect twisty,
but I will save you and sanctify you and use

(29:34):
you as an example onto the church that is staying
with my blood.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
I said me talking to you, I didn't know what
repent it was. I begin to pray as the Lord.
I'm lost, I'm a sinnah. I done took a man's life.

(30:18):
I'm nothing. Will you save me, and will you forgive
me and.

Speaker 2 (30:28):
Pleasure me from all unrighteousness and give me another chase.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
Don't let me die in the elected tail. Don't let
me die in elected tail. Lord.

Speaker 2 (30:50):
And it must have been well spoken. And Jeus received
in my plea of repentance, and he turned that rats
away from me, justified me unto.

Speaker 3 (31:08):
Life, Lord have Mercy, and had them to call me
back to Colt.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
And had him to community to communicate that death centence
to a life sentence in prison. Communicate that death sentence
to a life sentence in prison plus twenty five years
running consegative, not your life in twenty five years. And

(31:46):
the coach said, you're gonna do every day or that
if you live, you're gonna do every day of that
as you live, Lord Have Mercy Church. I wonder sometimes
that's how big God, a big and great God, ideas
I found out that Jesus let me know that I
was born predestinated, I was bone predestinated to be wise

(32:14):
in the blood, to be sealed in the spirit of redemption,
to testify the goodness of God and and the liberty.
While with Christ have made me free. I found that
out that I was marked from the wounds of my mother.

(32:39):
No man could commit a crime at that expecially in
the Deep South, in the state of losinga and live.
No kind of money could reach you and live h

(33:00):
And it brought me back and signed me into the institution.
Lord help me, and I begin to swabe save on
that time, the Lord saving Jesus Christ, get me fables
with the medistration, fables with.

Speaker 3 (33:21):
The warden, yes, sir.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Fables, with everyone that would help me. He didn't begin
to use me in revolvals at the public example, for
the welfare of the other prisoners. I said, Lord, I

(33:50):
cannot preach. He said, no, you can't, but you're going
to preach. I call you, praise the name of the Lord.
And I begin to get off in the ministry of

(34:13):
Jesus Christ.

Speaker 3 (34:15):
And the Lord began to wait.

Speaker 2 (34:17):
And and Goli was the most bloodiest, and Gold was
the most bloodiest violence penetant that he was in the
fifth the States. He was the violens and held the
record of demonic uncleanness. Mighter prisoner that existed in the

(34:46):
fifth of States Church. I want to tell you this.
If God is for you, what can be against you?
Praise the name of the Lord. The soul is the
witned the Knight. My soul is the witded the Knight.
My soul is the wided.

Speaker 3 (35:07):
That God exists, that is a God.

Speaker 2 (35:11):
That's Rheena Baba said. The fool have said in his
heart there is no God corrupted?

Speaker 3 (35:16):
Is he? He is corrupted when you say that, because
God exists and.

Speaker 2 (35:23):
He can intervene wherever he want them when he want
to right and especially when He chose you from the
foundation of the world. He told me from the foundation
of the world and predestinated me. Praise the name of

(35:46):
the Lord, and sealed his spiblity within my spirit and soul.
Watch me in his press of blood, and so my name.
I didn't sign my name. He signed my name in
the Lamb.

Speaker 3 (36:05):
Book of Life.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
In the Lamb Book of Life, I'm going to live again.

Speaker 3 (36:13):
I've got to live again. I will live again. Cannot
stop me from living again. After that, I got to
live again.

Speaker 2 (36:26):
Prayed the name of the Lord. Thank you Tesus, and
I begin to find tables and goodness of the Lord.
And the Lord give me the baptism of the Holy Goats.
Is anybody in here, God is he give me the

(36:48):
baptism of the Holy Ghat. Speaking in tongue, I can
spirit give artterans. He anchored me in the power of
his blood. Thank you Jesus. He honored my footsteps.

Speaker 3 (37:03):
That's the name of the Lord.

Speaker 2 (37:05):
He used me in the power of revolval and save
and sacti fact my soul from a burning hell. Thank
you Jesus. Thanks to Jesus. Praise it, wonder, pay praise
in wonder, p nay, and I begin to white. And

(37:30):

This ned, this and Gola was the most bloodish violence.
Penitat you that it was in history of the nation.

Speaker 3 (37:55):
God took a man like me and saved me.

Speaker 2 (38:04):
And I possessed the spirit of Jesus Christ and walked
it in the demonstration of his power war and he
began to use me in that prison. Thank you Jesus.
And bless God, Bless God, Bless God.

Speaker 3 (38:26):
In ten years.

Speaker 2 (38:29):
After my word going to the death house hit ten
years after that, and God had saved and sanctified me
and watched me in his blood in ten years after that,
God was using me and going have started becoming a
change place, a new place, a place to refuw y

(38:56):
only said much praise the name of the Lord. Yes, sir,
men bestot the beginning saved. We had revolvals all over
the place. Menistration had to kick in with itmministration.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
Had to kick in with it.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
Lord how Marcy, And when I know anything, help me,
Lord Jesus, God moved it violence wardens that who wasn't
for righteouness sakes because he had a churche there and
began to replacemmistration.

Speaker 3 (39:36):
Lord how mercy. I began to see the.
