Lawrence Massacre

As the Civil War showed no signs of slowing down neither was the tension between Jayhawkers and Bushwackers. After raiding parties from both Kansas and Missouri devastated towns and murdered civilians on both sides the largest atrocity was being planned. Captain William Quantrill at dawn on August 21, 1863 would attack the Jayhawk stronghold of Lawrence, Kansas bringing his 300 plus mounted riders to avenge past Jim Lane lead raids. At the end of that day much of Lawrence had been destroyed with 150 men and boys murdered. This inhuman act would trigger another unheard of act, the issuance by the Union Army of the expulsion Order # 11.
