Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is directed
toward business owners,
specifically small businessowners, solopreneurs, people
working for themselves or under20 employee work environment.
This podcast is for you becauseI've spent the last several
years helping to lift up othersmall business owners through
social media marketing.
(00:20):
I managed several accounts, Ihave helped get email marketing
set up and all of those things.
But what I didn't expect comingfrom you know in my photography
life previous to that workingalone and really being in
control of how things are runand able to work on my own
mindset and not have otherincoming stressors.
(00:43):
I've learned a wholeencyclopedia full of what the
struggles are as a smallbusiness owner with employees or
as someone that feels oftenchaotic and overwhelmed, and I
want to talk to you and supportyou through that in this podcast
because I do understand whatthat's like and I have seen it
(01:07):
for myself with people that areextremely successful where it's
very hard for them to spin allthe plates and a lot of times
they put on the professionalface in front of employees and
customers and you would neverknow and behind closed doors.
It is just deflating toexperience their stress and
(01:29):
struggles.
So I want you to know that youcan be in a position of needing
a social media manager and also,at the same time, be in no
position to pay a social mediamanager and still get it done.
So could you do it yourself, potentially, if you enjoy it and
if it is helping you to work onyour business rather than in
(01:53):
your business, if you'retalented at telling your story
and showcasing your work, youare probably a very great
candidate to do.
You know, to spend 20 to 30minutes of your day just doing
some social media marketing andlight connections through direct
messages on Facebook andInstagram or posting to
(02:15):
Pinterest and using that forsearch engine optimization.
I'm working on creating somequick guides, some video
tutorials that will help you todo that.
And if it's not, you and youjust don't have the time and you
feel like you're kind of alwaysa sinking ship and you're like
taking pills of water all day, every day, I want you to think
of who you know or what theperson would be like that could
(02:39):
work part time to help you out,and it is okay to train someone
to do this job.
If they believe in what youhave, what you offer, if they
believe in your business, youare already eons above a lot of
other people managing socialmedia accounts, because all you
need is someone that reallybelieves in your business and is
(03:02):
technical as far as socialmedia apps go.
The rest they can be trained.
They can learn as they go andthere are all kinds of resources
online to do that.
And it's your approach as abusiness owner of how you train
your.
You know, whether it's aconsultant or a part-time person
(03:22):
, how you want them to do thejob.
It's like any other job.
The struggle that I believesmall business owners have is
it's not their area of expertise.
So to hire someone to do itfeels overwhelming and scary
because you don't really knowyour own expectation of what you
(03:43):
want to see out of them otherthan results more foot traffic
in your showroom, your store oron your website.
So I, like I said, have createdsome and I'm creating some
quick guides to help with that,so that that person whether it's
your teenage daughter or yourcollege aged son or a retired
(04:05):
friend that just is looking tokeep a little busy but not work
a full-time job you can parkthem in front of the computer or
ask them to for an hour a dayand focus on one thing and see
that through over the course ofseveral days and they will have
a pretty good foundation of howthings work, where to go and
(04:27):
what to do and why.
And then they move on toanother set of tasks, whether
it's like learning, let's say, facebook, rather than you know.
Once they've gotten throughInstagram, then we go to
Facebook and then, once we getthrough with Facebook, then we
look at, possibly, tiktok.
They don't need to be on allthe apps.
Your business does not need tobe everywhere.
(04:48):
Do you need to claim your nameon all of these accounts?
I definitely recommend that, but you don't have to have
yourself or your social mediamarketing manager on all the
apps every day.
Pick the two that you know yourcustomers frequent the most.
Not you, because you'reprobably not your own customer
no offense, maybe you are, maybeyou're not.
(05:09):
Very few business owners thatI've met are actually their own
customers.
But choose the two apps thatyou know that they use the most
and focus on learning those, orfocus on having the person that
you select to run your socialmedia accounts.
Have them focus on only thoseapps three times a week as a
start and what I mean by threetimes a week is three posts and
(05:33):
posting the stories three timesa week.
Just start with that.
We're fortunately in a window oftime where people are
oversaturated online, so they'renot wanting a lot of incoming
from any business.
There's a dance and there's acadence to learning that dance
of what your customers want tosee from you, and you find out
(05:55):
really quick because they hitthe unfollow button if you're
posting too much or if you're instories too much.
Right now is about the latesthand that I've had on all the
social media platforms that Iwork with.
I am very respectful ofpeople's time and I appreciate
that they let me know byunfollowing if they don't like
(06:17):
the amount that I'm posting.
So it's just having listeningears and watching eyes and then
learning the skills.
So there are all kinds ofplaces that you can learn and
it's more time blocking thananything to try and pick up what
it is that you don't quite knowyet.
And I do recommend finding abackup person as well, because
(06:40):
I've been in a position a coupleof times where I am a sole
owner of my business and I had aconcussion that was pretty bad.
I almost no joke died at ahockey rink taking senior
pictures.
I did everything right.
I had spikes in my shoes.
It was a domino effect ofsomeone being very, very late
(07:01):
earlier in the day to theirappointment and me feeling
stress and letting that get tome and slipped and boom and was
out for a few minutes and when Iwoke up I couldn't talk, I
couldn't move, I couldn't doanything until I don't know how
much later when I started totalk, mumbling, and could kind
(07:21):
of move around a little bit.
But it was a whole summer worthof being grateful that I had a
very good system in place ofnames, because that's one thing
I could not remember and once Iwas able to be up and around,
that I was able to lean on abackup person that could help me
so that I could at least use mybest skills and keep my
(07:44):
business running with my camera, and my part-time person was
able to step in and do what Icouldn't do on social media and
marketing, and mainly marketingfor me with photography is
helping people to feel seen andto have that moment where I
share a reel from their sessionor a few photos from their
(08:04):
session.
People look forward to it and Ilove it and if I missed that,
it does kind of make people feelbad and I don't ever want that.
So I had that happen.
I had my mom passed away, mydad passed away.
Things happen and life isawesome most of the time and a
lot of the time we can get itall done.
But there are things that comeup and if you don't at least
(08:25):
have another administrator onyour accounts, you have yourself
in a pretty precarioussituation of if something occurs
that you're very sick or justneed to take a mental break,
there's no one that can evenhelp.
If something goes wrong with anaccount or people send a
message requesting to purchasesomething, it's nice to have
(08:46):
that other person, even just ona watch and see kind of basis,
like if you have a good friendthat you trust to have as
another person to help manageyour account, just to be there
when you can't.
So you do not need to beeverywhere all the time.
You can be in a position whereyou need help with social media
but you can't afford the help, and it's common.
(09:08):
It's more common than you think.
It's just a matter of timeblocking or selecting that right
person part time to help.
You don't have to train them.
That's what people like me arefor and there are other people
just like me, that help to dothat, and it's just a little at
a time and over time, they willtotally own it and you can just
(09:29):
say this is what we're featuringthis week, this month.
You can have your weekly ormonthly marketing meetings with
that person and say this is whatwe're looking for, this is
where we want to go, this iswhat's exciting.
Here's a few customer stories.
These are the awesome reviews.
You go crazy with social media.
So I hope this was helpful and Ihope that you start to feel
(09:55):
better about that chaoticfeeling, because it's so totally
normal and I completely get it.
I wish that I could just snapmy fingers and make it go away
for everybody, but it's a partof doing business, as we all
know.
It's just that it feels heavysometimes and we just need to
get the right systems in place, and I'm a huge systems person.
(10:15):
I love getting systems in placeso that when something comes up
or there's a need, we'realready two steps ahead and
we're already on it.
So if you found this helpful, please let me know, and if you
have a friend in business thatyou think would benefit from
hearing this, please pass thison.
I thank you so much for beinghere and I look forward to the
(10:38):
next podcast.
